The Weavers at Carnegie Hall [Live]
The Weavers at Carnegie Hall [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan, and the Kingston Trio were youngsters next to the Weavers, but without these acoustic elders, the aforementioned artists may have never found their folk voices. The Weavers were the main catalyst behind the folk explosion of the '50s and early '60s. This album captures the spark that led to that detonation. Certainly the foursome was responsible for the leftist political bent associated with folk music to this day. The Weavers were one of the few musical entities blacklisted during the McCarthy hearings in 1952 after a witness named them as Communists, probably a result of members Lee Hays and Pete Seeger's labor-union activities. In 1955 the quartet reunited for this historic show--and you can still hear the triumphant spirit in the air that night as the group (and audience) delight in the Weavers' brand of eclecticism, moving from Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie covers to old English ballads, African music, New Orleans spirituals, and songs that would soon influence rock & roll. --Bill Holdship

Magnificient piece that has not aged.......2005-01-11
Two incredible recordings were made from the 1955 shows at Carnegie Hall. This one and "The Weavers On Tour". Unfortunately the latter has not yet been released on CD. Both recordings have an energy that holds up 50 years later. Listen!
A triumphant return to fame after the blacklist!.......2004-08-01
This CD is a wonderful record of the triumphant concert by The Weavers given at Carnegie Hall on December 24, 1955. After a three year hiatus because they had been blacklisted by McCarthy, The Weavers began to play again in 1955 and played Carnegie Hall to a packed audience! This CD records both the concert and the electric atmosphere in the concert hall that night.
Of course, The Weavers sing their hits "Goodnight Irene" and "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" as well as songs from around the world such as "Suliram (I'll Be There)" from Indonesia and "Shalom Chaverim" from Israel. The group believed that folk music included more than just American songs. This belief is shown again when they sing "Around The World."
Although one reviewer says the sound is "so terrific," in my opinion the sound quality varies throughout the CD. Although sometimes it does seem as if they're in my living room, this concert seems to have been recorded in mono originally for LP and also if you listen very closely there seems to be several times when the singers are cut off just as they end the last note of the song. The recording of the concert is strictly speaking not complete since the applause is very obviously edited.
Overall, this CD is a great addition to any collection. The Weavers sing a broad variety of songs set in the folk style, such as "Greensleeves" and "Sixteen Tons." This CD is no longer so easy to find. Get it now-it is harder to find for a GOOD reason! GRIN
Weavers Forever!.......2001-08-24
I was given this album in the late 1950s when a young teenager. Since then I of course became a Bob Dylan disciple, then became heavily addicted to the best British rock and pop music, through The Who, The Beatles, Kinks, Animals and all the other members of that extraordinary 1960s caravanserai.
And amidst all that was the explosion into my consciousness of great classical music, experienced through the likes of Oistrakh and Richter, Giulini and Klemperer, Schwarzkopf and Popp.
I still love ALL types of great music. And I still regularly return to The Weavers and still marvel at their art and their commitment. And of all their recordings I have heard since they first impinged on my young consciousness, this 1955 concert at Carnegie Hall is still the freshest, thumpingest, foot-stomping best. Buy it now. No matter what your age, it will enrich your musical life forever.
I DARE YOU NOT TO SING ALONG.......2001-04-13
I never saw/heard The Weavers live, but I have many of their albums and have played this particular one, literally, hundreds of times. No, I am not a big folk music fan. In fact, I cannot think of one other so-called folk album in my collection of CD's.
The first thing one notices about this live concert, recorded in February of 1955, is that the sound is so terrific-- as if recorded in that great concert hall yesterday. At the same time, the sense of pure joy coming from the stage and then back from the audience is palpable.
The four voices that make up the group are individually so fine & so idiosyncratic: the big, booming bass of Lee Hayes, the sweet baritone of Fred Hellerman, the totally unique sound of Pete Seeger and, best of all for me, the warm alto of Ronnie Gilbert whose every note is just about perfect and whose enunciation is superb. You understand every single word she sings on every single song.
From Ireland, Africa, Indonesia, the American South, Israel, etc. every song is chosen perfectly and matchlessly performed....and I promise you that you'll never listen to "Greensleeves" ever again, without slyly smiling. It is easy to hear that the audience is having the time of their lives. The Weavers are a national treasure. I dare you not to sing along. Highly Recommended.
An essential piece of Folk Music!.......2000-02-21
This is one of the best Folk albums ever and definately the place to start your collection of Weavers material. When you hear their version of "Sixteen Tons" you'll quickly forget the one by Ernie Ford. "When The Saints Go Marching In" is also great. And, of course, "Wimmoweh" and "Goodnight Irene" are excellent. Add "Rock Island Line" and "Follow The Drinking Gourd" and you have a classic album. But, there are 20 cuts total, so this just barely scratches the surface. The songs, Seeger's instrumentation, and the harmonies of the four is simply outstanding. Definately get this one and enjoy some of the finest Folk Music ever recorded.

Sweet as Wine.......2003-04-28
Yes, sweet as wine indeed. The instrumentation, the arrangements and the harmonies are all superb. Here each part shines, and each song a gem. They should go along with the classical music. Despite the fact they had got older, I find the second Carnegie Recital even better. It's really a shame that such music should ever get dusted. I also bought some Peter Seeger's solo album, not quite as interesting. Fans of Peter, Paul & Mary should be delighted to hear them if they haven't hear them.
The Best of the Best.......2000-09-30
The group that really lit off the folk explosion of the late 50's and 60's was the Weavers. They were the definitive folk group. With Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hayes, the Weavers created a new musical idiom and set an entire generation singing and playing guitars. When Pete Seeger left the Weavers, there was unbelievable dismay among their fans - me included. Then, in April of 1960, I went to to Carnegie Hall to a concert of the re-constituted Weavers - with Erik Darling replacing Pete Seeger. I could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. With Erik, the Weavers had actually become BETTER!!! The musical selections, the harmonies, and especially Erik Darling's banjo and guitar playing. (Within a week I had gone out and found a 5-string banjo in a Bronx pawn shop which I bought. I didn't have the faintest idea of what to do with it and there weren't many banjo players in the Bronx but 40 years later, I'm still playing.) The Weavers were the BEST. With Erik Darling they were even better - the BEST of the BEST. THis CD captures the essence of those magical days. This is the only recording I have ever thought enough of to give as a gift to people I really care about. I have only had one person not thank me profusely after listening to it (I married her - but not for her musical tastes). Listen to Erik's guitar on "Bill Bailey"and his banjo on "Bowling Green". IMHO, this is the best recording to come out of the folk genre. Kick back, sing along and enjoy.
Better than the record. This is a "must have"........1999-08-24
What can you say about the Weavers that has not already been said? Traditional, fun, entertaining, educatioinal, humorous and for us baby boomers: nostalgic. Because of this album, I am a professional bluegrass banjo musician. I used to stand in front of a mirror and pretend that I was playing the five string banjo to Erik Darling's "Bowling Green" when I was only 16 yrs. old. Later my fraternity Brothers and I would practice the harmonies and sing "Virgin Mary" over and over again. All of these songs on this album are prescious and deserving of high compliments and praise. The best praise I can give it is: This CD is better than the record, and when I close my eyes and listen to the songs, I am sixteen years old again. This is a must have for any folk song enthusiast, it just does not get any better than this. The audience clapping, and singing along and the pure sounds of those beautiful harmonizing voices, and the fantastic instrumentals. BUY THIS CD AND BE HAPPY-HAPPY-HAPPY.

This is the best sounding Weavers CD period ! Full Stop!.......2007-04-07
This is best sounding Weavers CD.Trust me! The "Sax" treatment mentioned by another reviewer here is spot on.I used this disc to demonstrate High End Audio Gear.(People gathered around just hearing it)
This disc is worth having just for Guantanamera track alone, you can hear Pete's foot tapping on the stage! When you consider that this was recorded decades ago , you wonder what microphones people use these days! How can this be so good? This CD is one of my favs, i even got another copy just in case the "unthinkable" happens.
Get now ! What's stopping you?
Timeless, important, still relevant music........2007-01-18
Thanks Amazon for keeping this and other truly great music available in today's CD format. The quality is excellent.
I have reviewed this Concert Pt2 in another review.
I first listened to and fell in love with this concert and other Weavers music when I listened to it in the mid 1960s on vinyl LPs.
The Weavers on Tour is another great album. I also bought Pete Seeger at Carnegie Hall [the 1963 concert - double CD] from you - also reproduced on CD. Again excellent.
It is important for today's young people to know that Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Woody Guthrie, and Ledbelly were some of the formative influences on people like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez etc. The were activists in the de-segregation movement, the union movement etc., at a time when America was in sore need of effective voices. They spoke out against "McCarthyismm" when it was extremely necessary. Well Done!!!
Surprised that it has been reviewed only twice........2006-07-31
This is a true gem. Recorded live by Doug Sax. I have not listened to anything mediocre engineered by Doug Sax. The ambiance and performance is timeless. Even if you don't like folk music, you will enjoy this one. Highly Recommended!!!!!!!
TO GET YOU IN BETTER MOOD.......2006-01-13
I was truly surprised when I first listened to this album, since I didn't hear for weavers till then. I enjoyed it greately, and every time I listen it get's me into better mood.
Not the best, but still good........2000-07-05
This albu brings together the many people that was the Weavers. The main person is still Pete Seeger, but to hear the others blend in with those harmonies is just amazing. The set starts off with "When The Saints Go Marching In" and really continues to sizzle from there. The version of "Wimoweh" is one of the best I have ever heard. The other Carnegie Hall concert albums are better, but this one is very good. Buy it and enjoy. You will not regret it.

Old , but certainly not 'dated'.......2007-01-18
I first listened to this concert on vinyl LPs in the mid 1960s. My friend's father had this, and "The Weavers On Tour". I absolutely fell in love with the music and the songs. The Weavers, Pete Seeger, and Woody Guthrie were important influences in the develpment of modern folk music.
The songs may be a bit dated now, but the message is as important today as it was in the 1960s.
Thanks Amazon for keeping such important and truly timeless music available and in such excellent quality on today's CDs.

Album Description
Cut off in their hit making prime by accusations of Communist sympathies at the height of the McCarthy witch-hunts, The Weavers went from being embraced by the public and selling four million records, to being reviled and rejected over the political backgrounds of its members and disbanding after only four years together. This live recording is the band's comeback concert at the prestigious Carnegie Hall - performing to a packed venue. Rev-Ola. 1955.

Fantastic Quality.......1999-07-04
Not only is the performance great, but the technical rendition is absolutely as good as I have, as an audiophile, heard. I listened to this this performance on another brand CD and then listened to this remastering on Analogue Productions. I was prepared to concentrate for several minutes to hear any difference. But the difference was stunning and obvious within the first few seconds. For one thing, the other label sounded like it was a typical stereo with two sound sources. With this Analogue Productions CD, the sound stage was a seamless webb! And the articulation of the singers was present in great detail. Altogether a MUST GET for those who like this genre of music.
