The Be Good Tanyas broke out of Vancouver with a style that mixed mountain music with just a hint of urban funk. Po' Girl, an offshoot project with BGT singer-guitarist-banjo picker Trish Klein and another Vancouver folkie, Allison Russell, mines a similar vein of back-porch, acoustic intimacy, but moves the music from the hills and hollers of Appalachia to the moss-drenched balconies of Nawlins. Russell's singing evidences a slurred, breathy quality similar to Klein's BGT partners Frazey Ford and Samantha Parton--the Vancouver sound seems to involve a sort of mumbled, intermittently intelligible delivery that is no less evocative for being difficult to decipher. On "Bad Luck Day Baby" Russell breaks it up with bluesy belting that recalls a more energetic Norah Jones. "Bleak St." shows that, like the Tanyas, Po' Girl can groove without getting loud, and they write songs that rest comfortably alongside classic tunes like Lester Brown's "Abilene." They may even be great songs: it would be easier to tell if you could understand more of the words. Still, BGT fans won't be disappointed, nor will anyone interested in what folk might sound like in the future. --Michael Ross

With its Depression-era name and penchant for framing arrangements with banjo, clarinet, and fiddle, this Canadian quintet (including Trish Klein of the Be Good Tanyas) specializes in contemporary original material that sounds like public-domain traditional. Some of the anachronistic affections sound like a minstrel show, such as the vocal phrasing on the spiritual "'Til It's Gone," but the jaunty ragtime of "Go On and Pass Me By," the delicate latticework of harmonies on "Home to You," the jazzy reverie of "So Lazy," and the country waltz of "Texas" attest to the music's refusal to be bound by categorical restriction. And there's nothing nostalgic about the social conscience displayed in "To the Angry Evangelist," capped by a furious fiddle coda. --Don McLeese

While Frazey Ford of the Be Good Tanyas spent the year raising her new baby, band mate Trish Klein had time to record a second record with her other group. Like on their first record, Po' Girl takes the Tanyas' kitchen-sink mix of rustic sounds and adds a blues tinge. Musicians have always fused music from different genres, but now a full generation has grown up barely aware of musical boundaries. The age bracket that spawned Po' Girl is equally at home with country, rock, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and punk. They are even able to seamlessly add a rapper to the half-time country tune "Take the Long Way" without a hint of preciousness—-a rapper that name-checks Patti Smith no less. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars Po' Girl's Lilting Melodies Warm the Heart.......2007-01-23

I just love this CD. Po' Girl has penned some beautiful songs that leave you humming for days afterward.
Before Po' Girl came about, I was a huge fan of The Be Good Tanyas for years, having caught their shows in Vancouver, Los Feliz & Hollywood.
I'm so glad the members of that band joined their new friends and that they're all still playing and harmonizing together after major life changes kept them from recording for a spell. Take it from another mom, having kids will derail you for awhile, but it's lovely and very much worth the ride.
I hope to hear much more from the angelic and rootsy voices that make up Po' Girl. They are a genuine gem among so many plastic, formulaic bands that are churning out forgetable CDs in the music world.

Well. I stumbled onto Po' Girl on emusic, and am just blown away by this, their second album. Can't stop listening to "Take the Long Way, with CR Avery rapping gently through the middle of the song. Bliss.

This is not your run-of-the mill, mass market junk. This is real music made by real musicians. The sound is so old but so new. If this is the future of folk, then the future is looking good.

5 out of 5 stars Standalone.......2006-04-29

As a rubbish Brit with no knowledge of the Be Good Tanyas, I heard one song of Po' Girl's second album at a friend's house and was hooked. I instantly bought the album, and have recently bought the 1st album, which I find deeper, and more bluesy... The instrumentals are not easy, they are simple for a reason. The words, the tone, the timbre and the organic, live feel to the music makes this one of my favourite CDs, reminiscing to times in Canada. Listen to the words. You'll hear them ;)

4 out of 5 stars New favorite.......2006-04-05

If you are a be good tonyas fan, you will not be disappointed with this one. First listen, I was worried I might get sick of listening through the album as most of the songs are at slow or moderate tempo. Like Tonya's stuff, this is good singer songwriter material. You are not going to buy this for instrumental virtuosity. Solos are simple, just to add some accents to the good song writing. Instrumental accents include banjo (of course with Trish Klein from the Tonyas, harmonica, clarinet, pennywhistle, and whistling. Allison Russell's vocals are very pleasant, a tad bit more bluesy-jazzy than what you'll find in tonyas vocals. Trish Klein provides nice simple pleasant harmonies as she does with the Tonyas. Good original and catchy songs by the talented duo. Looking forward to hearing their second release.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing.......2005-10-25

this is becoming part of my most listened to CDs. It takes alot to break into my rotation and every song is a keeper!!
The sound is like a combo of michelle shocked and norah jones, but with more depth. You will not be disappointed with this choice at all!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Po' Girl--Truly Alternative Music.......2005-08-02

In the wasteland that is crappy mainstream music, Po' Girl is a wonderful oasis. I came to Po' Girl for Trish Klein (of The Be Good Tanyas) and I stayed for Allison Russell. If you want heartless lyrics and over-produced pop music, then don't buy this album. However, if you seek a creative mixture of folk, jazz, bluegrass, and blues, then this first album by Po' Girl is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Genial, pero..........2005-04-19

5 out of 5 stars GREAT TE KANAWA !.......2004-02-19

THIS IS A GODD OVERVIEW OF KIRI TE KANAWA`S TALENT,THIS COMPILATION INCLUDES GREAT OPERA ARIAS,AMERICAN SONGBOOK CLASSICS,MAORI SONGS AND MORE,DIGITALLY REMASTERED. REALLY ENJOYABLE.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

3 out of 5 stars shame you couldn't get his name right.......2007-04-29

The man's name is Ron Goodwin for heaven's sake (not Roy). He is one of the most popular light classical (some would say very light) composers of the 20th century. Earnslaw is the one I was looking for, just fantastic. The rest is OK, in fact mostly better than that, but not very demanding.

4 out of 5 stars American? Mostly..........2002-08-20

Hmm...the conundrum of what constitutes an "American". The book that this CD accompanies devotes an entire chapter to Caruso, though this collection only slips him in with Geraldine Farrar. I agree, too, that Callas should most definitely be included, as she was born in New York. As far as squeezing in Pons, I believe that although she was native to France, she took American citizenship after her US film career took off. I could be wrong here. Please correct me if I am! And the comments about Heppner being Canadian, he is slipped in on a track with Voigt, so this is more excuseable. My question is, should Saskatchewan-born Jon Vickers be included?

But this is just squabble...this collection is a wonderful sampling of the rich history American singers have had to offer. My only regrets would be to replace the Aida track of Ponselle's with her wonderful "Tu che invoco" from Spontini's La Vestale, and how unfortunate it is that such a dynamic artist as Marian Anderson did not record operatic arias until so late in her career. Her Ulrica is thrilling, but it is undeniable that her technique was beginning to show age by the time this track was recorded.

All in all, a wonderful collection, especially Pons's wonderful Bell Song, and Vaness's seething anger via Elettra.

3 out of 5 stars Opera Singers, Mostly American.......2002-04-07

The performances are highly variable both in recorded sound and quality of performances. The album is mis-titled. Ben Heppner is Canadian and Lily Pons was French!

4 out of 5 stars America.......2001-06-22

I believe that Canada is still part of America. This set then could have included Leopold Simoneau, Maureen Forrester etc.etc. More importantly, this very fine collection could have included Cornell MacNeil and my favorite, Maria Callas.I shouldn't harp on what's not included. This is a very fine collection.

4 out of 5 stars Ben Heppner is Canadian........2001-02-26

That's all I wanted to say about this recording - it's wonderful, but Heppner is Canadian.

5 out of 5 stars Rich and sentimental.......2007-05-14

Traditional Ukrainian songs are very loving and unabashedly sentimental. The 3/4 rhythims found in many is perfect for a swooning Romantic approach to love, history and family. A good, rich Baritone, which Gerello most definitely is, is the best medium for this song tradition, as it conveys power and masculinity, while still wearing its heart on its sleeve. It sounds much more natural than a tenor voice, which can somtimes be brassy. The arrangements are perfect. This CD is a great homage to the traditional Ukrainian songbook, although not for those that think operatic voices to be faitly ridiculous or for those who do not appreciate deeper emotive content. I would recommend

5 out of 5 stars Ukrainian Folklore at it's Best.......2005-02-28

The music, diction, and vocal mastery on this cd. is outstanding. Being a Ukrainian I was brought to tears listening to this beautiful Operatic Baritone revive our songs into vocally velvet poetry. Anyone that understands the Ukrainian heart and soul will agree, I'm sure. Bravissimo Vassilly Gerello. You are a true talent with the voice of a Kozak.

5 out of 5 stars He has a good voice .......2005-02-15

I must say that this guy has a nice voice.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Appears to deliver what it offers--but it is not opera!.......2007-02-11

I stumbled on this set in the Amazon listings quite by accident. I feel obliged to make it clear that I do not own the set, nor have I heard anything from this particular publication. I certainly am familiar with many of the performances included in the set, and I am willing (based on the previous review) to assume that they have been recorded on the eight disks of the set with an acceptable--if not necessarily leading edge--level of competence.

Judging from the contents listed on this review site, this is the underlying structure of the "People's Guide."
--Tracks 1-15 (presumably one disk): arias from the Big-Five Mozart operas.
--Tracks 16-34: arias from bel canto operas.
--Tracks 35-46: arias from middle-period Verdi operas.
--Tracks 47-64: arias and one chorus from Puccini.
--Tracks 65-87: miscellaneous loose ends. (I absolutely guarantee you that Number 71, "Parigi, o cara," is not, repeat not from "La battaglia di Legnano" but from an obscure little piece by Verdi called "La Traviata.")
--Tracks 76-88: arias [sort of] and choruses from Wagner operas (but not from "The Ring.")
--Tracks 89-99: well-known overtures and preludes to operas.

Right off, it can be seen that "The People's Guide 1" begins at the end of the 18th Century and ends early in the 20th. It entirely ignores the better part of two centuries of operatic development before Mozart and composers of the stature of Monteverdi, Handel and Gluck, not to mention Salieri. A couple of French operas sneak in the back door in Italian versions and only Carmen appears in the correct language. German operas are ignored except those written by Mozart and Wagner. Russian operas are entirely shut out. The 20th Century appears only in the works of Puccini, so the likes of Richard Strauss, Berg and Britten are cast into the outer darkness.

On the whole, though, the selection isn't bad. If you really want about nine hours of bleeding hunks from what most people define as the standard operatic repertory, you could do worse than this set. The performances seem to range from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. There are many famous names among the singers and conductors.

But it is not opera. Operas are not just a string of songs and choruses that follow along after an overture. An opera is--or should be--a dramatic whole. Opera was consciously invented at about the beginning of the 17th Century to combine drama, music, dance, costume and set design into a unified whole and display them on stage. Often the best parts of operas are utilitarian but brilliant passages that will never make their way into highlights disks such as these.

This set is hardly expensive at the prices being quoted as I write this. Nevertheless, I advise you to look through the offerings of complete performances. Many of the older ones offer unbelievably good singers in superb performances at low price. That's a better deal than you'll get here.

5 out of 5 stars A chance to enjoy opera........2001-08-12

Mozart, Wagner, Rossini . . . need I say more? Regardless of whether or not you are an avid listener of opera, this cd is a must have. Even if you never had the valuable opportunity to attend an opera, there is no reason why you should not add this cd to your music collection. Not only are some of the world's most beloved operas included (such as the Barber of Seville and Carmen), but thanks to technology, this cd provides a great sound that pretty soon you'll believe that you are in an actually opera house. The professional orchestras that play in this cd help to bring forth much emotion. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a collection of opera pieces at a reasonable price.
