Until his untimely death, Jim Croce was a force to be reckoned with on radio playlists. Photographs & Memories repackages some of his best work. Romantic acoustic-oriented songs were his hallmark, and songs like "Time in a Bottle," were huge hits because of their easy sentimentality. "I Got a Name" was the singer as well-worn folk traveler, while "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and even "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" followed standard boogie chord progressions, albeit with Croce's softer rock feel. There wasn't much really separating the overt emotions of "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" and "Operator" from his sap-dripping contemporaries, but there was just enough of an edge in Croce's warm voice to elevate his love songs to another level. Like a, oh, moderately priced wine, Croce remains a classic--accessible, affordable, and easy to enjoy. -- Steve Gdula

JIM CROCE'S MUSIC HAS PERSEVERED AS TIME IN A BOTTLE LIVES ON! .......2007-07-31
I am writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation album entitled "JIM CROCE, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES, HIS GREATEST HITS" by one of Rock's all-time greatest folk artists ever. I give you one of America's pride and joy's and one of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's favorite sons, the late great M-R. J-I-M C-R-O-C-E! "JIM CROCE, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES, HIS GREATEST HITS" was originally released in 1974 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the 21 Records label which is distributed by ATCO Records, a division of Atlantic Recording Corporation. This legendary compilation album would see its debut on Compact Disc in 1995 on the same Record label.
The late great JAMES "JIM" CROCE will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's all-time greatest folk anthems ever. JIM CROCE would also have a reputation for being one of the greatest twelve string acoustic guitarists in all of Rock n' Roll history. JIM CROCE had a special sound of his own with a mixture of Folk music and Contemporary Rock music. Throughout his whole career, CROCE would record many great Folk Rock anthems until his untimely death in 1973. "JIM CROCE, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES, HIS GREATEST HITS" chronicles and highlights JIM CROCE'S greatest hit songs during his finest hours. In my opinion, this legendary greatest hits album is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer greatness and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary music icon whose career was cut so short while still in his prime. JIM CROCE was truly indeed, way far ahead of his time. "JIM CROCE, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES, HIS GREATEST HITS" is the tragic tales in the life of one JIM CROCE. His music is his story that speaks for itself.
"JIM CROCE, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES, HIS GREATEST HITS" from 1972 begins with the forever JIM CROCE stamped trademark Folk Rocker "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," the beautifully slow acoustic Folk anthem "Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)," the beautiful orchestrated and acoustic sounding Folk anthem "Photographs And Memories," the amazing acoustic Folk Rocker "Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)," one of the most beautiful acoustic Folk songs ever written, "Time In A Bottle," the beautifully slow orchestrated and acoustic Folk Rocker "New York's Not My Home," the electrifying Folk Rocker "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," another JIM CROCE stamped trademark acoustic Folk Rocker "I got A Name," the beautiful and soothing acoustic Folk Rocker "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song," the breathtaking acoustic Folk Rocker "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," the beautifully slow and smooth acoustic Folk song "Lover's Cross," the incredible acoustic Folk Rocker "One Less Set Of Footsteps," the beautiful hypnotizing and orchestrated acoustic Folk number "These Dreams" and the heartfelt acoustic Folk Rocker "Roller Derby Queen." I would like to commend the late great JIM CROCE for his brilliant twelve-string acoustic guitar riffs and licks that electrify and lighten up the songs to its fullest potential. CROCE'S lead vocals harmonized magnificently with his music as one resulting in blending with and complimenting his songs perfectly. Well done.
If you want to hear one of the greatest twelve-string acoustic guitar playing ever, buy this album. I highly recommend purchasing this legendary greatest hits compilation album for everyone of all ages to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This priceless gem has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. You may also want to research further and check out the many other JIM CROCE albums or greatest hits compilation albums that are widely available on Compact Disc. Doing this, you will find the album that is right for your musical tastes and interests. You can do all of your researches and album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, JIM CROCE'S career was cut so short while still in his prime. JIM CROCE has been gone for so many years but his music lives on like he never left us. When JIM CROCE died in that plane crash in September 1973, a lot of Folk Rock music would die with him forever. JIM CROCE has not been inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame YET but I feel that his time is coming right around the corner. In my opinion, JAMES "JIM" CROCE has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements as a legendary artist will never be forgotten or denied. So here's to you JIM. Thanks for the many great memories and moments. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JIM CROCE FOREVER! R.I.P. JAMES "JIM" CROCE, Born 10 January 1943, Died 20 September 1973 at age 30. Long Live Rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Croce's best.......2007-01-12
This CD has all of what I consider to be Croce's best known songs on it and is really worth buying. The sound quiality is great and if you're a Croce fan or just want to check him out, this is the CD to buy. The only bad thing is that he's not around to put out more great tunes like those on this CD.
A man lost in time........2006-05-10
Right after he died, he was everywhere on the radio. Since then he have disappear from the musical face of the earth. "Time in a Bottle", "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown","Don't Mess around with Jim" and "I got a name" are just the tip of this musical iceberg. His songs range from the touching "Photograph and Memories" to the fun hearthed "Car Wash Blues" and "Roller Derby Queen".
This album hits everything that you need from one of the Great Singer/Songwriter of the 70s. There are a lot of imposters out there, this is really the top of the chart and the only Croce ablum you need. The tragic is that his career was cut so short by his untimely death.
You Don't Mess Around With Jim.......2006-05-09
As with any greatest hits album you get someone else's idea of greatest hits. Yet if you only intend to buy one Jim Croce album you can not go wrong with this one. At least it has my favorites. In case you have not heard Jim before, the album is a mixture of fast and slow paced songs; yet all of them have his signature voice and style. These are his later recordings and were released just before he was killed in a plane crash. You may also want to pick up am album of his earlier recordings to see how he progresses through the years.
I wouldn't listen to the fact that he was genius.......2006-01-29
I'm probably like most guys who weren't around when Croce made his music. I know a handful of hits and thought the rest of this would be pleasant but bland folkish pop. (The disc is actually my wife's.) Once I found the time to sample this, I was pleasantly surprised for the most part. Croce seems able to both write convincing uptempo pop-rockers as well as melancholy balladry with an eye for the telling detail that marks the best lyricists.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"Bad,Bad Leroy Brown" was a man 'meaner than a junkyard dog' who meets his comeuppance when he dallies with the wrong man's wife. "Operator" is told stream of consciousness style..Croce trying to call and make amends with the woman who ran off with his best friend and faltering again and again ("Operator/oh could you help me place this call/'cause i can't read the number that you just gave me/There's something in my eyes/You know it happens every time/I think about the love that I thought would save me..") "Rapid Roy" combines Croce's musical attempt at an acoustic rendering of the classic Chuck Berry riff with a character study of an ex moonshine runner turned racer. Croce's wit is apparent here. ("He got a tattoo on his arm that says "Baby"/He got another one that just say "Hey") "Time in a Bottle" is a transcendent expression of love that deserves every bit of the airplay it gets. Anyone who argues this is "sappy" is devoid of heart. "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues" is rapid fire wordplay with a fantastic opening line. ("Well, i had just got out from the county prison/Doin' 90 days for non-support..") It's a shaggy dog tale of a man trying to pick up the pieces at a thankless job. "I Got a Name" is a classic plea for recoginition of self-worth amid the sea of people that is our world. "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" is another catchy tale of a tough guy being done in. Despite repeating the theme of "Leroy Brown" more or less, it's still a keeper. "Lover's Cross" is Croce's refusal to become a martyr for the sake of a woman.
LOWS:
"These Dreams" is a great lyric about breaking up ("Once we were lovers/But that was long ago/We lived together then/And now we do not even say hello..") but the melody comes off like an attempt to re-write "Time in a Bottle". "Roller Derby Queen" suffers from the same fate, sounding like a carbon copy of "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" musically. The lyric's also not terribly memorable.
BOTTOM LINE:
I've underestimated Croce. "Rapid Roy" and "Lover's Cross" are likely to become favourites of mine with more play, and I already knew I loved the "radio stuff" (Operator,You Don't Mess Around with Jim,Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Time in a Bottle) A nice collection from an underrated singer-songwriter.

^_^.......2006-03-05
I own both of their cds. But I have to say, I like this one only 1% better than "Sleepwalker". This cds contains more upbeat songs while Sleepwalker is more emo, rock, and punk. It was sad when JamisonParker broke up though, because I was looking forward to one of their concerts back in November 2005. But I'm updated with both members. Jamison Covington has a new band called Dance with the Dead. Parker Case has a new band called I and the Universe.

I saw them in concert the other night and fell in love... They rock! Buy this CD!! It is worth every penny!! They have a new one coming out March 24th... I think!
Impressive and touching.......2005-01-22
Absolutely beautiful is what it is. The lyrics are some of the most depressing I've ever heard, but the music doesn't drag the mood down. Soft but penetrating music with heartfelt vocals. Jamison Covington is not just some depressed, angsty teenager who wrote some mediocre poetry and equally mediocre music to accompany it all to make preteen girls swoon. He's a man with a talent to make you feel everything he's feeling through words and music. Heartache and heartbreak with such intensity that no one could call it wimpy. Jamison Covington and Parker Case are the type of people you can't picture doing anything else but making music. This isn't something they're doing just for kicks. Buy "Notes and Photographs", it's a beautiful CD.
ugh.......2005-01-13
i bought this cd based on the other reviews. and when i got it, wow, i was very disappointed. this cd is not good at all. it may be good to those of you who like dashboard confessional and stuff like that, but it's not to my liking. i recommend anadivine, coheed and cambria, or armor for sleep well over this cd.
Even Better Live.......2004-09-21
This is such a great EP, I would absolutely reccomend it to anyone. Word on their website is that they are currently recording a full length!! If you ever get the chance to see these guys live, DO! They are realllllly great acoustic and sound incredible. So, Buy This CD!

Terrible........2007-07-23
When I think of Mest, I think of fun pop/punk with a little reggae influence. This sums up their first three major label releases (all of which were phemonenal albums). This album is emo. Bad emo. Their style has changed so much in one album that it's mindblowing. You can tell just by looking at some of the song titles ("Kiss Me, Kill Me", "As His Black Heart Dies (My Mistake)", "Graveyard", "Nightmare", etc.) that this is a darker album. The problem is that darker doesn't necessarily mean more mature. In fact, with this album Mest is regressing.
The lyrics are littered with words like "blood", "dark" and a lot of them allude to suicide. The lyrics aren't good, nor are they original. In fact, it seems as though Tony and Jeremiah went through a bout of a writer's block, so instead of writing lyrics they broke into the house of some random angsty 14-year-old who hates his parents and stole the kid's crappy poetry.
This album also includes Mest's worst song of all-time: "Last Kiss". The lyrics are so childish and angsty that it's nothing short of utter rediculousness. Here's a little sample: "Stare at you as you slit my wrist, and as we share our last kiss, hold me as we die". These are lyrics I might be able to appreciate if I was 14-years-old. As I'm 21, I see how silly and overly dramatic they are. And since Tony, who wrote the song, is quite a few years older than I am, he has no excuse. This is just terrible.
There are only three songs on this album that I like. None of the three hold a candle to any song off Mest's last three albums, but here goes: "Take Me Away (Cried Out To Heaven)", "Photographs" and "This Time". All three are decent, and almost reminiscent of Mest's previous sound.
After putting out this album, I'm glad Mest broke up.
Why all the complaining?.......2006-08-13
This CD is, for the most part, classic MEST. I don't know why many people seem to disagree. "Take Me Away" is one of the best rock songs of the year, not some screamo garbage or standard pop-punk. It is such a cool song. "Graveyard" is another standout. All that's missing is the FUN MEST - I love cruising in my RX and listening to "Destination Unknown" and I hope MEST does another album like that one. But their sound is unique, a gorgeous, beautiful sound. "This Time" is an emotional ballad better than anything Coldplay could ever write. As a band, the performances are the best on this CD, but the songs are not ALL good (most are.) MEST has the potential to break the sound barrier with their next CD if they combine the rocking fun of "Destination" with the musical sophistication of this album. Tony if you read this don't ever give this up. You guys will have your time on top of the world, and it will all have been worth the wait.
Are you kidding?.......2006-07-21
I simply can't believe that the band who wrote "drawing board", "cadillac" and the entire s/t punk masterpiece of 2003 could be behind this crap, but they are. "photographs" is a complete 180 from past mest releases, and I for one plan to never buy a mest record or go to a mest show again. Bands who change so much shouldn't even continue under their old name. Change the sound? Change the name. Simple as that.
This is everything but mest.......2006-03-09
What the hell!!! My friend bought me this album for my birthday and it looked to be a darker and more mature Mest. I put it in my stereo and this is not Mest they have turned pop as hell! Mest is the band that wrote "Drawing Board" "Cadillac" and "Breaking Down", this is a new Mest trying to make it to the MTV mainstream, if you thought the old Mest were too punk then you will definitely like this album, but if you're a big Mest fan then i suggest you make your way across the cd shop and go check out Cauterize or Saves The Day
the kids are growing up.......2006-01-26
ok, maybe that title makes me sound old, but im only 21. Anyways, this album is a lot more mature, and this album shows it. I personally liked their older stuff better, but these tracks are just as catchy as their old stuff if you leave it in your player enough :) And damn, there's even a DVD included. good deal!

from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-10-05
"Generations" is the original theme music composed to accompany "The Generations Music and Photography Exhibit," which featured historical family photographs taken in the 1920's by George Skaroulis' grandfather,Theo Patronis. Patronis was born in Greece in 1897 and came to the US in 1913. With his camera, Patronis documented the family history as well as the old and new worlds he called home. The photography exhibit opened in Patmos, Greece in July 2000, and then had its premiere in the US in Atlanta, Georgia in January 2001. Pianist George Skaroulis' music captures an appreciation of life's simplest moments, as do the photographs in the 8-page booklet that accompanies the CD. For the most part, the music is quiet and peaceful. Some of the tracks have additional instrumentation, but the album is gentle and serene, and some of the pieces are breathtaking in their simple elegance and heartfelt emotion.
"Hopes and Dreams" opens the CD with piano and oboe in an almost wistful duet that sets the tone of the album. "Photographia" is a beautiful piece with a simple melody that mirrors the poignance of the photos. As the title implies, "Nostalgia" is a reflective, bittersweet piece, remembering times gone by. The title track begins with a variation on Chopin's Prelude in Cm, and evolves into a wonderfully flowing piece that includes flute and strings along with piano; this is one of my favorites on this album - very soulful and emotional. "Dreams of Children" captures a gentle innocence along with a moving forward. "Se Ymnumen" is another favorite - a very minor piece full of passion. It was inspired by a liturgical piece heard often in Greek Orthodox church services. (It was also on Skaroulis' debut CD, "Homeland.") "Melodia" is a simple, compelling piece that is reflective and very poignant.
A self-taught pianist, George Skaroulis doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles in his music, and none are needed. The messages are clear and straightforward, and Skaroulis is one of the more expressive pianists on the contemporary scene. Another exceptional album by an exceptional artist. Very highly recommended!
The most beautiful, calming music..........2001-11-28
This music is sooooooo beautiful. What a lovely surprise to discover this musician! I received a brochure with some Greek tapes, videos and CDs in the mail and came across the name of George Skaroulis. I had never heard of him, but decided to try amazon.com to listen to some of the selections... ahhhhhhh...
as I listened to each selection, my breathing began to slow down and my body began to relax...and a peaceful feeling began to take root. I am SOOOO grateful for this beautiful music.
Also.. his "Season Traditions" CD is one of THE most beautiful albums... Its music is sooo calming and beautiful that you can truly listen to it ALL YEAR LONG. Put this CD on and curl up with a good book by the fire... ah.. a little bit of heaven.
Peaceful Escape.......2000-08-31
I purchased this CD after I skimmed every track for about 10 seconds each. I play this cd almost everyday. George's rendition of Shenandoah evokes different deep emotions out of me everytime I listen to him. All of the other songs bring such peace and is a great relaxer or backround music while I'm at work. Hopes and Dreams, Castelli, My New Friend, and Dreams of Children are my favorites. I think I might have to buy another copy of this cd before I wear out my current one. And a bonus, George is a great guy.

Don DiLego is simply a genius. From the first time I popped this into my car CD player it has not left the rotation. This is perfect road music for someone who appreciates the best music. It has all the attributes of a great album...great lyrics, great crafting of songs and some of the best vocals around. Once you listen to this album you will be happy you bought it. I went out right afterwards and bought the "The Lonestar Companion" and the "The Lonestar Hitchhiker". Thanks for bringing a new friend into my life Don!

Album Description
Seth Roberts and the members of the band Lakes have come together to create a hopeful set of songs that unabashedly shine as such, while still maintaining maturityÂalong with touches of time-tested realism. The debut EP for Lakes, entitled Photographs, harmonizes with lovely, bold, spot-on vocalsÂjangley-warm guitars, hints of banjos, and melodies at-times-reminiscent of The Police or Tom Petty. This first work captures qualitative reflections, romance embraced, answered questions, and unabashed reveling in light of the decidedly strange Â"state of thingsÂ".
Customer Reviews:
Must have CD.......2006-11-22
This is a great EP, everyone should have it. Its melodic songs really grown on you, melodies that keep playing in your head. The message it conveys is upbeat, challenging and refreshing. Lakes is one of the best bands to come along in a long time, offering something new, innovative and great to listen to. I can't wait until they release a full CD. Buy this CD - you won't regret it!

There Is No Eye: Music for Photographs--Recordings of Musicians Photographed by John Cohen is a great mix CD of raw, ragged, and right American folk music. Though that's little surprise as, since the late 1950s, John Cohen has patched together an alchemical body of work as a filmmaker, photographer, self-taught ethnographer, music writer, art professor, and musician. The CD accompanies a book of Cohen's beautiful, black-and-white documentary photos. Cohen really knows his folk music; his 1968 interview with Harry Smith for the Sing Out! fanzine remains the Rosetta stone for the all-important Anthology of American Folk Music, and as one-third of the New Lost City Ramblers he helped bring the visceral pleasures of true traditional Americana to a larger audience during the folk revival. This collection is wide-ranging and largely unerring. From Beat jazz to gospel, Appalachian a cappella singing to a Peruvian string band--it's all here, with no slick O Brother arrangements or anything else to get in the way of the music as it would have been heard on front porches, small clubs, and backyards. About a third of the tracks are previously unreleased; Dylanologists will need this CD for a swell unreleased track by the young Bobby, a version of "Roll on John" from a 1961 WBAI radio broadcast. --Mike McGonigal
Album Description
In Music For Photographs, photographer, film maker, folklorist and musician John Cohen (of the New Lost City Ramblers) presents some of the finest American roots recordings ever made. On their own, these songs are authentic and captivating. Yet, they are only one half of a conceptual whole-- Cohen has also released a book of photographs, There is No Eye, showcasing the musicians featured here as well as many others. Experienced together, the music and the photographs create new dimensions of possibility in our collective drive to understand and appreciate people's music. Includes unreleased music from Rev. Gary Davis and Bob Dylan, as well as classic tracks from Woody Guthrie, Roscoe Holcomb, Bill Monroe, Carter Stanley, Muddy Waters, and many more. 32-page booklet, exquisite photos, extensive notes, 68 minutes.

Folkways Sampler in Fancy Packaging.......2002-06-17
This CD is very seductive--the cover looks like a 50s folkways release, the design is sharp; the title is hip and intriguing (music for photographs?), and it's all lower case a la e.e. cummings; Woodie Guthrie looks like a bad mutha in the cover photograph.
Getting past the design, and the john cohen photographs (which are wonderful), however, we realize that this is just another folkways sampler-- sort of a follow-up to the American Roots sampler. There are some great tracks here from the old stand-bys: an early Dylan, Guthrie, Gary Davis, Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Muddy Waters, as well as a few surprises, such as a beutiful bluegrass piece from Alice Gerrard and Hazel dickenzs, and a really interesting afro-rootsy piece by rufus cohen and wade patterson. There are a few throw aways as well (leftovers from a less successful musicological expedition, I guess.)
Folkways has no trouble riding the latest roots music wave because it's had cred as an "authentic" roots music label all along. A little slicking up of the packaging serves this comp. well, and it doesn't even take an "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" sticker to give it appeal.
folk music... from the core of the american experience.......2001-11-23
..........twenty three songs that go straight to the core of the american music experience.... everything that we have heard on the radio since the beginning of recorded music... from fats domino to britney spears... can be traced straight to these wonderful songs..... many of them totally reminiscent of harry smith's anthology.. but somehow more accescible..19 year old.. dylan.... sounding so fresh.... but so in touch with the music he was trying to restructure for a brand new audience..
I'll be listening to these songs for a long time..especially when I want to remind myself of how magical music can be..

Bland Dutchmen.......2006-05-12
Now, I won't go as far as saying Photographs & Tidalwaves is a terrible album. But plain and simple, it's boring. I would hardly compare Holland to The Elms (as far as musical talent goes). Also, I really see very LITTLE emotion in the singer's voice. No real range. No depth. Not BAD mind you- just not GOOD. Also lyrics are less than powerful, and guitar, drums and keys are forgettable at best. Don't waste your money. Buy The Elms "The Big Surprise" and just skip the first track, or get "Interventions & Lullabies" by The Format and enjoy every moment of it.
Unoriginal garbage........2006-02-23
I saw Holland open a while back and decided to check them out. Their music is frankly too boring to make it, and I strongly advise that you heed my more sober review of this album.
Absolutely amazing.......2005-02-26
I first heard Holland at the FIF farewell tour. I fell in love instantly. I was thrilled to learn several months later that they would be playing at Cornerstone Festival. Holland is by far one of my favourite bands. Will Holland's voice is absolutely gorgeous and pulls at the listener's emotions. Each song is unique and wonderful. The CD is worth every cent I paid.
Surprisingly Good CD.......2004-08-28
I first heard about Holland from a video for Shine Like Stars on tv. I thought the song seemed catchy so I decided to get this cd. I personally think its very good stuff for pop/rock despite about 2 or 3 songs that I normally skip, all the rest are very good. I mean it isn't anything groundbreaking but instead is relaxing and enjoyable for when you're in a more quiet mood. Overall I would recommend this to pretty much everyone. Go out and support this band!
Not Too Shabby..........2004-07-16
I must admit this isn't the best album. I actually bought it a year ago and, initially, i didn't like it very much. It just seemed really bland and lacked that special something to make it great. Now that i am revisiting it, i am finding alot more to enjoy. Holland plays a brand of pop-rock that crosses the line into emo on occasion, but always lifts my spirits with the great, lush melodies. The lyrics aren't very deep, but they fair well with the kind of music that is played and the singer's voice. I wouldn'd reccomend rushing out to pick this up, but its a good treat to have once and a while on that lonely day where you just need to feel good.

Great fun!.......2004-11-26
This a modern version of the first works the Soft Machine played (and recorded). Daevid Allen is great and his voice is as strong as ever. The drummer feels young and can get a bit on your nerves..sometimes bordering on amateur-like. But for the most part he is OK. The other musicians are better and really add to the psychedelic feel of the music. Great for those looking to refresh their memory with early Soft machine material.
