There was a time when Dar Williams flubbed her chords, forgot her lyrics, and could only make it through a set due to the enthusiastic support of her fans. Now she's a seasoned and poised folk-rocker and a mesmerizing live performer, although this recording fails to reflect it. Sadly, her magnetic personality and energy seem lost here. Recorded during her 2000 tour behind The Green World, Out There Live too often falls short of both her lush studio recordings and her vibrant stage performances. Although upbeat numbers like "As Cool As I Am" and "Are You Out There?" nearly summon the patented Williams charm and verve, her more plaintive, quiet songs, such as "February," "End of the Summer," and "When I Was a Boy," sound exhausted and flat. No new songs or covers are included, most arrangements vary only slightly from existing studio recordings, and Williams frequently sounds downright bored. Her endearing stage banter is captured in a few song introductions, but it is not enough to carry an album that will please only die-hard fans. --Sally Weinbach

Exactly what was Pink Floyd's The Wall? Rock opera? Concept album? Performance art? Mere entertainment? While the truth may lie in a combination of all of the above, during the band's tour of 1980-81, The Wall was a bona fide spectacle. More than anything, Is There Anybody Out There? captures the volume, the bombast, and the grandeur of these famed performances with remarkable accuracy. Meticulously recorded, these concerts are astonishingly faithful to the band's studio versions and flow out of the speakers with practiced authority and absolutely fantastic sound. That said, there are few new revelations to be gained from hearing The Wall live that can't be gleaned from the studio version. Some moments do have an additional spark, however. "Run Like Hell" is launched with blistering intensity, and the first notes of "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" will surely raise a shiver. The release also includes two tracks ("What Shall We Do Now," "The Last Few Bricks") left off the original release due to space constraints. Essential for Floyd fanatics as well as those wishing to hear just how terrific a live concert can sound. --S. Duda

4 out of 5 stars Better than the studio version.......2007-05-25

I got this as a gift from a friend and was first impressed with the very nice package of great photos and artwork. Honestly, it sat around for a while before I listened to it because I was never really that excited about The Wall as an album. Finally I listened from beginning to end and was pleasently surprised. I think this version is much better than the original studio release as it has a more cohesive feel to it and is not nearly as disjointed. The audio quality is fantastic too. The studio version was recorded in four different studios if I remember correctly, and you can tell. Here, the band is performing to visual presentations onstage so everything must stay together, and of course, there is always something magical about a live performance that you can't reproduce in the studio. All of the earlier PF live stuff is great though, like Cruel But Fair for example.

This is a must have for the hard core Floyd fan! Don't buy the cheesy two disc set, get the box set, it is a far better presentation.

My boss at work recently lent this to me- at first I thought I would burn myself a copy- but the minute I put it in my player I knew I just had to buy it! Like every other Floyd experience, this is magical too.

Thank you Steve :)

5 out of 5 stars Where's the legimite DVD?.......2007-04-26

5 stars for the audio CD...

But, more than a review I would like to ask if the "Is there Anybody Out there?/The Wall Pink Floyd" has been released on DVD as well?.

I have seen some DVDs on sale under the name of "The Wall at the Earls Court" but according to some reviews there...that DVD is a pirate DVD, nothing to do with this Audio CD.

Is There Anybody Out There...to help me?

1 out of 5 stars Careful what you get!.......2007-01-25

The music is great, the bad rating is for Amazon. Although I've ordered the limited edtion, I received the "simple" editon. Of course, I got my money my money back (thanks for that) but I still wanted the limited edition. When I contacted Amazon, they've told me there is no way to ensure that I'll get the right edition and that it seems there is a problem with this product.

5 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-12-28

I never liked the studio version of 'The Wall'. All in all, I believe Roger Waters lost his mind and slipped into complete megalomania while they recorded their epic double album of despair. Of course, the wall has a group of outstanding songs that should have made up a single album. As a double album/cd somewhere along the way the music starts taking the listener down a one-way path to places that aren't very interesting at all.

That said I still have to give this live edition 5 stars. Why? It's a bloody good show. If you can get beyond the whining of Waters and concentrate on what he and the band accomplished theatrically then I believe you will find this a considerably enjoyable experience.

Plus, it's really cool to go back in time and hear Comfortably Numb played live for one of the first times ever. That's amazing in itself.

4 out of 5 stars Live Version of the Wall a Good Choice.......2007-05-17

The live version of the Wall is a must have for advid fans of Pink Floyd. Seeing the group perform in years(decades) past gives me an appreciation for any of their music recored live on a CD. Its that simple.

5 out of 5 stars Secret Message..........2007-03-04

The Wall is, like any other great art, a true masterpiece. Roger Waters delves deep into the human psyche and asks some very difficult questions whilst providing very few answers...

The live version is only an extension of the album...one truly needed to be there and experience it In The Flesh to appreciate it completely. However, the question remains...

Do you know the secret message that lies within The Wall? If you are not aware of the secret message that is hidden behind The Wall fear not...you are in the majority. Shocking that so many people don't actually know about this.

Listen...focus...concentrate...repeat...

That is the best hint I can offer for you...

5 out of 5 stars The Wall Live..so ya, thought ya, might like go to the show !.......2007-02-18

I am a die hard fan of Pink Floyd and Roger Waters. We have heard The Wall so many times, the studio album. It is very good to hear other version of this well knonw prog rock masterpiece. The sound is surprisingly good and there is awesome version of classic such as "Mother", "Hey you" and of course "Comfortably Numb"
The Wall is an icon, and few album are so completed as this one.

5 out of 5 stars the pink floyd live experience.......2006-08-13

pink floyds best live album by far, tracks include some of floyds best such as comfortbly numb, young lust in the flesh nobody home, hey you and mother, what shall we do now should have been released on the studio album but at least we have it here, unfortunately some of the songs on here are really bad such as vera lynn and bring the boys back home but those arent good on the studio album, this is even better than the studio album of the wall buy this

5 out of 5 stars An Rare Instance In Live Recording.......2006-06-10

I bought this album having been in love with PF's album The Wall for years. I also knew the reputation PF had as a live band, and I must say they did not fail me. It is one of the only instances where I prefer the live recording to that of the original. The sound is full, rich, and one can feel the energy bursting out of their speakers. The audience noise also adds to the performance of the concert. People complaining that it's too close to The Wall album are missing the point, Pink Floyd can actually replicate an entire album live! That's an amazing feat for any musician. I would love for a DVD version of this to come out--but until that time I will satisfy my love for The Wall with this live CD.

Truly, no amount of glitter (for those of you who don't get the reference, get the album and listen to "The Babysitter's Here") can match this performance by Dar Williams. My sister introduced me to her music by mixing "The Green World" and "The Beauty of the Rain" on one CD, and giving it, along with "Out There Live," to me as a Christmas gift. I occasionally listen to the former, while the latter has become one of my favorite CDs; consequently, I don't understand the criticism of this disc compared to her other efforts.

It is amazing to me that one person could have enough depth and creativity to capture the emotions behind each of these songs in a simple, 3-5 minute presentation, but Williams does it beautifully. She doesn't so much sing her songs as she paints a picture with music, and allows us to see the green fields of silver corn ("End of Summer") and crocuses in the snow ("February") and even the teenager with his shirt on backwards from "Are You Out There?".

My personal favorites from this disc are "Iowa," "End of Summer," "As Cool as I Am" and "Are You Out There?". I'm sure that the quality of the music is better live, and it would be cool to hear more of Williams's clever and funny comments, but this CD is a great introduction to a remarkable talent.

    4 out of 5 stars Better Live.......2007-01-30

This is a great CD for Dar fans. She sounds so much better live. I might even toss my older studio-recorded CDs.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Dar's Discography.......2006-06-08

Better than a best of album, Dar William's 2001 release Out There Live allows listeners to acquaint themselves (if unfamiliar) with the artist's work and access, though remotely and with the limitations of recording, her intense appeal. Live performance brings new life to songs previously recorded and released, and, although Williams couldn't transmit herself over the airwaves, she manages to re-channel some of the power from her presence onstage onto CD.
Her introductions to "I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono" and "The Babysitter's Here" complement the music in such a way that one might even miss them when listening to the original records. At least, that was my experience when I went back to The Green World (2000). The studio cut of "I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono" lacks the energy of that included on the live album, despite the force of Williams singing a song that is distinctly hers. The Hammond Organ/Mellotron at the beginning of the studio track overpowers the other elements of the piece and leaves it sounding, to my ear, overproduced, that is, in comparison to the latter version. With Out There Live, Williams cleans up - and, as is the case with "I Won't be Your Yoko Ono," sometimes speeds up - her earlier work, effectively making that which was good even better.
After you buy this album, and, I assure you, you should, check out "Iowa." Williams proves just how much a little guitar strumming can do. Choice simplicity underscores some of her most eloquent performances, and lyrics which somehow reflect the essence of childhood and adolescence mark some of her most affective pieces, including, "If I Was a Boy" and "Are You Out There."
With tracks like "Teen For God," Williams's most recent CD My Better Self matches the quality of Out There Live and may, given some more time, replace it as my favorite album. Either way Williams remains my favorite, rating, in my book, above Tracy Chapman (new album: Where You Live), Martha Wainwright (sister of Rufus, daughter of Louden), and the righteous babe herself Ani DiFranco (who can be heard, sort of, on the new Dar album). Seriously, folks, buy Out There Live.

    5 out of 5 stars The best.......2006-01-11

I don't understand why some people say these songs don't sound as great live. Sure, they sound different than on Dar's studio albums, but in my opinion, they sound BETTER!!!

Dar is a great song writer, and for any fan, especially one just starting to listen to her music, it's a must-have. I've burned it for a lot of music fans I know, and most of them love it too!

Stand out song for me is February, but they are all great. You seriously will be hard-pressed to find a song you don't like.

5 out of 5 stars the only great live album .......2005-07-11

Dar Williams is a great singer/songwriter and this album's displays her performance excellance--a friend gave me this years ago to introduce me to Dar after a debate about how live albums arent as good as the originals--i lost the debate but won a great introduction to a very talented musician.

5 out of 5 stars I can hear the vocals!!.......2004-03-20

This album just blew me away. Play it loud!! All the music comes through clear as a bell!! The vocals were excellent. The Piano was awsome, it was like I was there. The music was staged perfectly from the drums to the keyboards to the guitars and vocals.
I have the Jap remix and this album blows it out of the water.
I have a fairly 'hi-end' system which I'm sure helps.
Anyways I loved this one far better than the rest.
The book is great, a true keeper.

5 out of 5 stars The Wall as it SHOULD be experienced!.......2001-02-06

Untill I received this CD set in the mail yesterday, I wasn't really a huge fan of The Wall. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it is not my favorite Pink Floyd Album... Well,,, until now!! This is the most incredible performance! I was expecting a so so sounding live recording, but was I ever shocked when I put in the first disc! The sound quality is superb. The songs, to me anyway, are far more moving as performed live. Many subtle variances throughout add to the more realistic feeling. It is guaranteed to move the soul.. The different versions of the songs are so good it's unbelievable. "In The Flesh" (both I and II), "Another Brick in the Wall" (both I and II), "Mother" (oh God this one is awesome too!!), "Run Like Hell" (Oh my God in Heaven I don't even have words for this version of it!!) Just get this CD set, have a few listens, and enjoy!!!! Oh yeah,, remember Saucerful of Secrets?? The crazy piano work and freaky organ stuff?? It's here man!!! Interjected in the middle of Run Like Hell.. it's so freakin cool .. Damn,, just get this CD set.

        5 out of 5 stars Increadible.......2000-11-08

In this disc Pink Floyd exprerses their control over the audience, giving a completely new idea of the band. The enviroment created by the public outcry is encouraging and adds to the increadible performance of Pink Floyd. This disc is not better than the original studio edition as some songs so sound better and others don't. Anyway this disc is an invaluable part of any collection

        5 out of 5 stars SWEET.......2000-07-09

these cd's are amazing, you get a different feel about the preformance than you do when you listen to the studio CD. Buy it if you are a huge fan because it's cost has risen considerably.

5 out of 5 stars floyd, at their best!.......2000-07-06

i'll not say much, but although this cd is quite expensive, the amazingly powerful songs make it so worth while buying! it's a must for all floyd fans, take it from me!

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Nice cross-over.......2003-03-09

There is only a single track on "The Kiri Selection" that didn't come from one of her other releases, and that is "The World You're Coming Into" from Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio. The rest of her songs can also be heard on "Kiri Sings Gershwin," "Come to the Fair - Folk Songs & Ballads," "From Heart to Heart" with Malcolm McNeill, and "Kiri Sings Kern."

It's a jumbled mixture but Dame Kiri negotiates the songs with a light, brilliant touch, never bringing too much heavy operatic artillery to bear on what are essentially popular songs. For those of you who are not operatically inclined, you may remember this lovely soprano from the 1981 marriage ceremony of HRH the Prince of Wales to the Lady Diana Spencer. Te Kanawa sang "Let the Bright Seraphim" (and wore a very strange hat).

Unlike some sopranos (my chorale director says Dame Joan never sang a consonant throughout her entire career), Kiri is scrupulous about her intonation and you will be able to understand almost every syllable she sings. My personal favorite is her rendition of Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes:" "They said some day you'll find,/ All who love are blind,/ When your heart's on fire,/ you must realize,/ Smoke gets in your eyes." She sings with intense pathos, yet a little tremble of courage. I can just see her sitting in some chic '30s cocktail lounge, head (with that outrageous hat on it) held high while her friends chaff her about her unfaithful love. She reaches up to brush the smoke or tears from her eyes and pretends to laugh away a remark that was much too personal.

When Kiri sustains a note, she does something with it. She doesn't just sit on it à la Pavrotti and let us admire her beautiful voice. She interprets every nuance of the lyrics, unlike some of my very favorite opera singers who don't cross over into popular music very well, e.g. Domingo, Ramey, Norman, and Dame Joan.

Te Kawana fans, unless you already own all four of the albums mentioned above, this CD is definitely worth your while. Kern and Gershwin enthusiasts will also find interpretations to treasure.

          5 out of 5 stars Top Performance.......1999-06-16

I have only just purchased this CD, and I'm in love with it already! Kiri's voice is so incredibly versatile, that you are just STUNNED by her ability to sing Gershwin, Kern and others like a jazz singer. She's incredible, and so's the recording. I'd recommend it to anyone, as Kiri's best CD outside of her West Side Story and full opera performance CD's. Her duet with Malcom O'Neill is amazing, and the way she interperets Gershwin's hits is so neat - far better than I've ever heard. The only SLIGHT moan I would have is that in one or two of the songs, she is a little to far away from the mic, and the orchestra are a little loud. But considering how great she sounds - does it matter? Make this your next Kiri CD purchase.
