Editorial Reviews

A "new Dylan" with critical acclaim but few fans, Loudon Wainwright III moved to Columbia Records and traded his prior albums' unadorned voice and guitar for a higher-octane folk-rock ensemble sound on this 1972 release. The strategy earned the WASP-ish troubadour the left-field Top 40 hit "Dead Skunk," which is still his best-known song--a Pyrrhic victory that confirmed Wainwright's wit and roguish vocal style, but obscured the depth and nuance of his pointedly autobiographical material. Album III offers more telling, if still funny, glimpses of its author, as well as more sobering slices of his deceptively concise art. Most striking of all is the blink-and-you'll-miss-it "Red Guitar," which in less than two minutes paints a startling self portrait of the rage behind the smirk. --Sam Sutherland

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

So good only Van could have picked the songs.......2007-07-31
You either love or hate Van the Man. Over 40 years he has given the world some of the most heartfelt beautiful music ever recorded. This best of provides a stunning glimpse into the breath and depth of what he is capable of delivering. Showing respect to those who came before him, this collection is absolutely outstanding from start to finish. In the hands of the recording company this offering could have been a diaster. Thanks Van for giving us your gems for this collection.
great new album.......2007-07-24
I was excited to hear that Van had out a new album. I've been a huge fan since the 70's.(that's dating myself, isn't it). This album is a nice mix of music and includes some duets with other artists. I'd like to see some brand new music from Van, but this one is great.
Great Value.......2007-07-23
This is a 2 disc CD with lots of great songs. I really like the mix of songs and definitely recommend this to Van Morrison fans.
Great selection.......2007-07-12
I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.
Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10
Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

After plundering the Yardbirds' legacy and Willie Dixon (among others) for their blues-riff-heavy first two albums, Jimmy Page and company surprised many listeners with the strong acoustic/folk sensibility displayed on III. Page aficionados shouldn't have been caught off guard; the guitarist had toyed with similar sensibilities and modalities during his brief tenure with the Yardbirds (most notably "White Summer" from the Little Games album). Ever the creative thieves, Zep kick off the album by nicking the riff from "Bali Ha'i" no less, with Robert Plant wailing it to punctuate the thundering FM warhorse "Immigrant Song." Even other electric rockers like "Celebration Day" and "Out on the Tiles" have an inventive, offbeat musicality to them that suggest the band was already wary of stereotyping. But it's the decidedly mellower acoustic groove of the album's latter half that's the news here, from the graceful beauty of "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" to the raw, folksy charm of "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp," "Hats Off (to Roy Harper)," and the traditional "Gallows Pole." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The heart of my entire collection!.......2007-07-25
A rare group where original albums are the only way to go! Plays like a "Greatest Hits"! The very heart of my entire collection! Do lyrics get any better than "That's the Way"? Does blues get any better than "Since I've Been Loving You"?
****1/2 Stars. THE underrated Led Zep album.......2007-05-20
Led Zeppelin III (1970) Led Zeppelin's third studio album.
After two albums in 1969 that had helped developed the blues-rock/hard-rock sound, as well as create several FM radio staples, Led Zeppelin went in a different direction with their third record. "III" is one of their more overlooked works, due mostly to its folk sound. Besides the storming opener "Immigrant Song", the other tracks are relatively unknown to casual listeners. My thoughts? Their loss; this album has been unmarkedly though subtly influential on modern music.
"III" seems to have been made by the band in the spirit as though they were afraid of being labeled specifically as a blues band. Page is mostly on the acoustic guitar here, with Plant showing that he could actually sing - something not really heard on the first two albums. But the highlights here, putting aside the obvious "Immigrant Song", are the folk-ish "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp", the meandering "Friends", and the shifting "Out on the Tiles".
As I've said in reviews of other Led Zeppelin CDs, the sound quality is amazing. While most other CDs seem to lack the warmth distortion of the original vinyls, these remasters were overseen by Mr. Page himself. Don't worry about being disappointed in that department, all you have to worry about is how you're going to enjoy it.
Cooled off........2007-05-08
After a pair of great blues/rock albums, Led Zeppelin decided for their third record that it was time for a change of pace. Largely leaving behind the blues roots they embraced so heavily, this one recesses the blues tinge and replaces it with a more overt folk sound-- this was certainly present on earlier albums, but here it's the main voice.
Of course, this isn't immediately obvious, the record does open with a fierce, screamed, churning "Immigrant Song", a two and a half minute slice of heavy metal, but it settles down pretty quickly, and indeed the record's best material is quite tame and dominated by some fine ballads (almost slulggish "Since I've Been Loving You", acoustic "Tangerine", the absolutely fantastic guitar and mandolin number "That's the Way"). The exception to this amongst the real greats on the record is traditional "Gallows Pole"-- soaked in acoustic guitars and mandolins, it picks up a lilt and energy and didn't receive nearly as much attention as it should have until the mid-90s Page/Plant reunion.
Still, unlike their first two records, some pieces on here just don't do it for me-- "Friends" is a bit too disjoint for its own good and "Out on the Tiles" is suspiciously filler-like. It's strengths certainly overtake its weaknesses, but in the Led Zeppelin catalog, "III" is substantially weaker than the records around it.
Led Free.......2007-04-06
Third time around, and they get it right again. From the squeak of Bonham's kickdrum (the requisite blues "Since I've Been Loving You") to Page's only performance on banjo (the gotcha-anyway "Gallows Pole") there ain't a duff track here. It's a quantum leap sideways from the heaviness of LZ II, and the landing is perfect. Criminy, "Celebration Day" is brilliant enough even with (actually, I think, because of) the botched intro - - when Jones's bass and Bonham's drums finally clamber in, the track takes off and carries the album with it; Page's guitar work on this track is awesome. And Led Zeppelin had flirted with acoustic music before, but the full-blown folk rock on III proves their eclecticism once and for all - - "That's The Way" is simply beautiful in its melancholy. It's a wildly diverse album, and as such shows that Led Zeppelin was at this point bursting with ideas. Anyone remember Lucifer's Friend? They copped Plant's Viking wail from the high-octane, octave-riffed "Immigrant Song" for the first song on their own debut. So what, you say? Exactly.
zepplin's most acoustic set of songs........2007-04-03
this, zepplin's most acoustically orriented album, while not one of their overrall masterpieces, still has plenty of great material on it: more than enough to make it a must-have for lovers of rock and roll. the acoustic songs "friends," and "that's the way," are simply great. not to be missed. "celebration day" is the best rocker on the album; another song that you shouldn't miss out on. "since i've been loving you," is a masterpiece, one of led zepplin's best songs: a blues melody that is absolutely gorgeous. all and all, another wonderful album from led zepplin that is definitely a fine addition to any household.

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin
Customer Reviews:
The beautiful gift of opera..........2007-07-17
This 2-CD set is absolutely wonderful! You can close your eyes and feel like you're actually at the opera, listening to those beautiful voices bringing tears to your eyes. Nessun Dorma still stirs up emotions in me, no matter how many times I hear it. Great examples of opera to give someone wanting to get interested in this style of music.
Pretty darn good.......2007-07-04
This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.
The Opera #1 Opera Album.......2007-06-07
The music is wonderful. The production is terrible!! The sound fades in and out and is very scratchy in some places.
Excellent assortment.......2007-05-12
I'm not a big opera fan but I wanted to expose an assorted selection for my kids. This was perfect since it included several recognizable selections.
Great Selections.......2007-03-31
This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

You want relaxing classical music that'll soothe your soul but won't lull you into sleep? Here's a double CD for you. The Most Relaxing Classical Album in the World ... Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. The performances of most of these excerpts are top-notch--artists include Sir Neville Marriner, James Galway, Jacqueline du Pré and the Philadelphia Orchestra--and there's enough variety here for everyone. --Edward Garabedian
Customer Reviews:
Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04
This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.
Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17
I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.
Too much opera.......2007-01-10
If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.
Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15
So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.
That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.
Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.
To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.
Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)
So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.
TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10
This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Two-and-a-half hours of bliss.......2007-04-04
This may be the best money I've ever spent. I got 2-1/2 hours of bliss for less than what I'd usually pay for one CD -- and you know how it is with music. You buy an album because of a song or two that you love, and you find that you like maybe half the songs on it. There's not a single selection in this one that I would've left out. It includes Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Pepe Romero on the guitar with the Acadamy of St. Martin in the Fields. I needed to replace my old LP recording of that. But I also get 30 other classical compositions and traditional Spanish pieces, each special in its own way.
Have you ever heard music that you wanted to last forever, maybe even to dive inside and live there for a while, immersing yourself in sound? That's how I feel about this collection. The only problem I have with it is that I bought it thinking it might be nice to listen to while I write. Not so. It's terrible for that. I'll sit with my hands poised above the laptop keyboard, assuring myself I'll get some work done while I listen. The music takes hold and carries me away.
I'm not expert at describing this or any type of music. I just know what I love. You might too, if you enjoy classical or Spanish guitar -- unless you have absurd expectations about combining listening with work.
not what i expected.......2007-03-26
This CD for me was a waste of money. Its just not what i thought it would be. Others may enjoy it but for me..it wasnt what i was hoping to hear.
excellent guitar performances.......2006-07-27
Outstanding guitar performances. I gave it only 4 stars because I do not personally like some of the compositions.
Essential Guitar..........2005-07-26
Up until this collection, I'd never heard the "Cavatina" played in the Deer Hunter movie. After hearing it, I could play it all day and not tire of it! It moves me that much, considering that it's almost "not" a classical guitar selection. The rest of the music is first rate! Excellent playing, but the "Cavatina..."
Buy it and enjoy!!!!
Lives up to its Name!.......2005-06-10
If you only bought this double CD set, you'd have a good starter collection of classical guitar music. It includes most of the standards, as well as rarer pieces. In addition to the many solo pieces, there are several excerpts from orchestral works, with Rodrigo's indispensible Adagio from "Concierto de Aranjuez" topping the list. There are also several flamenco numbers included, complete with heel taps and castanets.
The recording quality is uniformly good, even on the tracks by Segovia. I don't know if they were remastered or recorded late in his career, but they're free of the surface noise present in so many of his recordings. The set clocks in at a generous 2 1/2 hours - one of the greatest deals in instrumental music; this is not a "bargain" quality set. Listen to the samples online - great stuff.
My only mild criticism is in the marketing. The advertising features John Williams and Julian Bream. Each contributes exactly one track. I would have enjoyed more pieces by them for stylistic comparison. But the less well-known (at least to guitar music neophytes like me) artists are every bit as good, and I intend to obtain more of their work.

something to have.......2007-03-14
These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.
Excellent Music.......2007-02-19
This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!
buy now.......2006-09-01
Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.
Lovely.......2006-02-22
This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.
Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14
I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.
As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!
I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

From the White Album to the end, the last days of the Beatles weren't smooth, which made the fact that they still produced some astonishing music all the more remarkable. In abbreviated form, "What's the New Mary Jane" is finally issued here, and proves underwhelming. For the rest of the set, it's largely down to outtakes and demos, but this time there isn't the same insight of the previous two volumes. Anthology 3 comes dangerously close to the sound of barrels being scraped. That said, it's the Beatles, and in whatever form, the music still shines brilliantly. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Yes a notch below the other two volumes, but still a very good collection.......2007-01-12
The Beatles need no introduction when it comes to the elite of Rock/Pop music. When trying to "rank" the greatest artists of the Rock/Pop era, there is no doubt that the quartet from England ranks number one on just about every list. Going even further, the Beatles might be the top act in the history of modern music - among any genre. Some quarter-century after their breakup, the Beatles began to consider their place in history. This impetus played a key role in the release of the three volume, "Beatles Anthology" CD set and corresponding television documentary. One of the main attractions of this project was that it would bring the three surviving Beatles together for the first time since the famous breakup. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr would collaborate together on two unfinished John Lennon songs: "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" - creating a "virtual" reunion among the four band members. This three volume set would not be an ordinary greatest hits collection - it would provide a historical retrospective to the band through rare and unreleased material. , "Beatles Anthology 3" covers the latter years of the Beatles focusing on the last three albums: "The White Album", "Abbey Road", and "Let It Be".
As mentioned, this CD serves as a historical retrospective to the band. One of the strengths of "Beatles Anthology Volume 1" was that there was material that was prefaced with spoken words by the likes of Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Epstein. These spoken words helped set the stage for the material to follow. Unfortunately like "Beatles Volume Anthology 2", "Beatles Anthology 3" does not have any spoken words with the exception of some comments that are on the demo cuts.
There is no doubt that Beatles fans will enjoy the content of Volume 3 but when you put it up against the content in the first two volumes, it does fall a little short. Like the first two volumes, Volume 3 does contain a 42 page booklet that helps to supplement the listening experience. This collection should not be confused with a traditional "Greatest Hits Collection". Instead of studio cuts, this collection consists of outtakes, demos, and rarities that construct a terrific listening experience.
Here are 10 things to look for - in no particular order:
1) This is the only volume of the three volume Anthology collection that does not contain an original song. (The original song "Free as a Bird" is found on Volume 1 while "Real Love" is found on Volume 2.)
2) Like Volume 1 and 2, George Martin does a masterful job at providing continuity and fusion to the collection. While he didn't actually produce every individual cut, he did produce each of the three volumes of the Anthology collection as a whole.
3) For the most part the first disc of Volume 3 revolves around "The White Album" and the associated recording sessions. The second disc revolves around the "Let It Be" and "Abbey Road" albums. As many know, "Let It Be" was the final Beatles album to be released, but it was shelved and "Abbey Road" would actually be released before it. I found it amazing how much material did not make it on to "The White Album".
4) Much of the material could easily be mistaken for "Beatles Unplugged". Many are acoustic guitar cuts that were used as demos. While a lot of the material on Disc 1 falls into this category, there is some material on Disc 2 that also falls into the "unplugged" category. Most interesting was George Harrison's solo demo of "Something".
5) Like the previous two Anthology volumes, there are also some covers. Volume 1 would contain the most covers, but Volume 3 includes a three song medley ("Rip It Up", "Shake Rattle, and Roll", "Blue Suede Shoes"), "Mailman Bring Me No Blues", and "Ain't She Sweet". These are "throwbacks" to the Beatles' early days (as evidenced on Volume 1). I personally liked the cover of "Ain't She Sweet". "Come and Get It" is included, but this was an original McCartney composition later made famous by Badfinger.
6) This volume reflects a period where the Beatles were doing more songs as "narratives" and began to introduce "characters" in their songs. These "characters" provided a great avenue for the Beatles. Some of the more popular characters we hear about on Volume 3 include "Maxwell Edison", "Polythene Pam", "Mr. Mustard", "Desmond and Molly Jones", "Sexy Sadie", "Jude", "Rocky Raccoon", and "Mary Jane".
7) There aren't as many alternate takes as I would have liked to have seen. "Glass Onion" is the only song we are given multiple takes on. Volume 2 did a much better at the multiple outtakes in showing how the song developed.
8) Despite the fact that this was the time the Beatles were coming apart at the scenes, you wouldn't seem to know it from these cuts. There are plenty of examples of the members laughing and joking around.
9) There is a shorter and stripped down version of "Hey Jude". It isn't as good as the final product, but it still is interesting to hear. I'd also put "Something" in the same category.
10) While some of the material on this version is unfinished or interrupted by spoken words, it is what adds to the charm of the collection. I heard a disc-jockey in "New York" so impressed with this collection as he said "...and this is the junk!" It's amazing how stuff that didn't make it through editing could sound so good, but in this case it works.
This is a good collection. However, when you compare this to Volumes 1 and 2, it just isn't as strong overall. This is not a knock on Volume 3 - just a testament to how strong Volumes 1 and 2 are. Overall, this is still a very good collection and one Beatles fans will surely want in their collection. Highly recommended.
A Sensational End.......2006-12-05
This is remarkable. The third and final volume of the Anthology series reveals more previously unheard music from the greatest band of all time. This collection may prove to be the most interesting to casual fans. The first volume shared a lot of home recordings and live stuff that really only hardcore collectors would want. The second volume, while definately having value to hardcore fans, focuses again on live performances and studio cuts that the casual listener might not see the need for. On this third set, however, we hear many acoustic demos and outtakes that are more than listenable for the average fan. The material is late enough and all studio produced that it is quite good quality that all fans can equally enjoy it. And the beauty is, there is still enough to keep us die hard fans happy, too. The following are my personal favorites:
*Helter Skelter - nice bluesy mix.
*While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George on acoustic, very nice.
*The Long and Winding Road - stringless.
*Maxwell's Silver Hammer - Paul screws up third verse, fantastic.
*Something - again, George only on acoustic, and with alternate lyrics.
This is a beautiful set with something for everyone.
Beatles Anthology 3.......2006-10-29
Anthology 3 is a treat for any Beatles fan. You get to hear some of your favorite songs as they are being born along with studio cuts that allow a glimpse into this band's creative process.
When I grow up, I'll be a singer........2006-07-15
This was the final volume of the Beatles Anthology series of rarities. It's a two disc set, with Disc One featuring "White Album" outtakes and Disc Two featuring "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" rarities. A lot of this is demos or alternate versions of previously released songs, althought there are a few unreleased songs here. Of course, being the Beatles, most of it is very good, if not quite as good as the "official" versions of these songs. This is a must get for all Beatlemaniacs, although new Beatles fans should start with their regular albums before getting this.
The third of three.......2005-11-05
Anthology three as with one and two also has outakes and unfinished songs.
I will only hit the highlights or songs of note.
You hear 3 unfinished songs from side two of the album (back when we still had vinyl).
Those songs are Mean Mr. Mustard, Polythene Pam and She came in thru the Bathroom Window. You hear John playing Mean Mr Mustard on an acoustic guitar with an altered tuning.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps is nothing like the vesion on the White Album with Eric Clapton doing the lead guitar. This version is an acoustic version and has a charm of its own.
Rocky Racoon is still unfinished and has verses that were later dropped. Something has George Harrison playing the song solo without the band and again he uses extra lyrics that were later dropped on Abbey Road.
You also hear Paul doing Teddy Boy that appeared on his first solo album. You also hear a very early version of George Harrison doing the title song from his first solo LP, All Things Must Pass. So you even get a little bit of a preview of what was yet to come.
Another song of note is the version of Come and Get It which was later recorded by Badfinger. As I said these are just the highlights, you need to give this a listen.

This commemorative reissue of music from 2001: A Space Odyssey combines the Also sprach Zarathustra theme, various Johann and Richard Strauss segments, and a ballet suite by Aram Khachaturian--all of which prove how much Stanley Kubrick's film attempts to avoid the soundtrack clichés of most science-fiction movies. Instead of the expected sci-fi effects, there is a more ironic application of music that would be otherwise incongruous to the celestial settings. Here, "The Blue Danube" complements scenes involving weightlessness and descending spacecraft, while Gyorgy Ligeti's creepy "monolith" music connotes Armageddon more than interplanetary exploration. The tracks play as they had appeared on the original soundtrack release back in the '60s, but there is also previously unreleased supplemental material and a dialogue montage entitled "HAL 9000." --Joseph Lanza
Customer Reviews:
great music, great reissue.......2007-04-16
This is a great collection of music and I love the great mastering job that was done with this. The inclusion of the tracks from the original MGM soundtrack release are a great bonus. The liner notes include interpretations of the film and the music that are insightful.
I noticed that the music in the movie is mixed in surround sound, it would be great if they could release this on DVD-Audio or SACD surround. I'd buy it again!
fantastic.......2007-03-11
I have the old lp release of this music, what an incredible array of classical music, topped off by my personal favorite piece of music in the world, the blue danube waltz. Let yourself be carried away in deep space by this incredible score.
whoa........2006-09-04
"Atmospheres" was enough to make me buy this album. just try to imagine what eternity might sound like. okay, now you know exactly what Atmospheres is. wow. who else could having captured the feelings that are in this score? this is above talented. this is above genius. this is above avand garde. this is too good to be labeled as anything at all.
Great Music for Halloween, very creepy.......2006-03-17
I bought this CD to use for a haunted house program, the music will creep you out.
Bleakest of Futures..........2005-10-08
The atonal, unsettling atmosphere of much of the music of Ligeti is fitting to the bleak vision of a human future reigned by nothing but cold technology and of humans drained of emotions except for the deepest animalist fear originating from our inner reptilian brainparts which have not changed for over millions of years. The incongruity of Johann Strauss' lovely 'An der schönen blauen Donau' with the cold technicality of spacefaring as depicted here could not be more complete, but what a perfect find on Stanley Kubrick's part! It makes the uneasiness and confusion even greater. And then, to top it of, the complete and flabbergasting irony of using Richard Strauss' Fanfare for the 'rise of Man' in his 'Also Sprach Zarathustra': what a great destiny for 'Man' indeed, this bleakest of bleak visions of the future!
As a soundtrack for '2001: A Space Odyssey' this music together on one album is just great.
And besides, this soundtrack has indeed, like so many others I guess, made me aware of the genius of Ligeti, which otherwise might have gone unnoticed for me.

Billy Joel - Greatest Hits Vol. 3 .......2007-03-27
Doesn't have all his works, but is a nice blend of some of his earlier work, up to his last album of new work released in the 90's. Some of the work from the mid to late 90's isn't Bill Joel material in my mind. It's o.k, I can still hear his roots in there, but it's not the Billy Joel I grew up listening to and loved.
Only 6 new songs added to his greatest hits!.......2007-01-11
Don't get me wrong. Billy Joel is Great. But this vol. 3 cd should have new songs added to the collection. Out of 17 songs there are only 6 that are new to the greatest hits collection. If you already have Vol 1 and 2 thinking that Vol 3 is the next series. You are mistaken! Vol 3 is over 75% of vol. 2.
It is a good cd. But I already had all but 6 songs. Maybe they should have found some more of his great music. Or called it a mini addition to his Vol 1 and 2.
A little bit of everything.......2006-12-27
The great thing about Billy Joel is you don't have to wonder about the lyrics of his songs, his diction is crystal clear and every word can be understood. One gets the feeling he is telling his life story in song, sometimes romantic, sometimes down and blue and at times really exuberant. Lullabye is so tender,Leningrad a meaningful tale and To Make You Feel My Love worth the price of the CD all by itself. These songs touch all the emotions and you'll find yourself joining in on some of the lyrics. A stunning array, five absolute stars!
Billy just continued to make great music...........2006-08-19
I love this CD, it shows that Billy Joel still had it, even in later years. The time represented here (mid 80's-mid 90's) is just great, with only the best songs here. This is a wonderful companion for his vol.1 and vol.2 compilation. Highly recommended.
Joel the genuis!!.......2006-06-19
there is no question in my mind that Billy Joel is a musical Genius up there with Elton John and Paul McCartney!! almost all the songs in this vol.3 cd are hits!! go buy it,and while your at it get vol.1 and 2!!

The first retooling of any album in the mighty Springsteen catalog is an exemplary labor of love by Columbia. The original 1975 release was the make-or-break record of Bruce's career and arguably still his best collection of material. It is presented here on one disc unsullied by outtakes or inferior versions--just pristine digital remasters of those eight grittily romantic songs of street life that defined the artist's signature styles. The substantial bonuses are two new DVD programs, one featuring a full concert performance by Bruce and the E Street Band on their first date outside the U.S. at London's Hammersmith Odeon in November 1975, and the other a "making of" documentary including band interviews and contemporary concert footage. The whole handsome box truly honors a legendary recording while providing generous value for fans.
The meat of the bonus material is the London show. A mythology has built around it that the band were so disorientated by travel and culture shock and Bruce so enraged by label-generated hype that they gave one of the worst performances of their career. Primitively shot by today's standards, the footage captures the brilliance of the relatively new band's ensemble playing. Highlights include a "Thunder Road" accompanied only by keyboards that opens the show, fiery solos on "Kitty's Back," a dynamic "Saint in the City," and a number of songs that have long since been retired. It's certainly notable how pensive and joyless Springsteen appears when compared to his later, animated stadium persona, but it's also fun to see the far greater role as foil played by Clarence Clemons. As he now testifies in the sleeve notes, putting lie to the myth, on that night they had "gone for broke," and as this writer can bear witness, the British audience exalted the show as the arrival of the greatest live performer of his generation. --Rob Stewart
The Best of Bruce
by guest editor Steve Perry
Steve is the editor-in-chief of City Pages newspaper in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle
(1973)
After a folk-rockish debut album that bubbled with ideas and dense lyrical play, this is where Springsteen began to find his voice as a rocker and as a songwriter. The prisoner-of-love romanticism of "Rosalita" and "Incident on 57th Street" hinted at what was coming, and this early version of the E Street Band--jazzier and more spare than later versions, thanks largely to David Sancious's piano--sounds great, if a little ragged, these many years later.
Born to Run
(1975) and
Darkness on the Edge of Town
(1978)
These two records, which belong on any compilation of the top 100 rock albums of all time, sketched the themes that he would spend his whole career chasing, and defined the expectations fans would bring to his records ever after. The first chords of "Born to Run" sounded like freedom itself the first time I heard them on the radio, and the album lived up to them. "Thunder Road" is still the greatest rock & roll love song anyone's ever written. The record sounded so big and impassioned and propulsive it was easy to miss the dread running underneath it.
Darkness... put the dread front and center. There are more of his best songs here than anywhere else, even if the sound is muddy and leaden at times.
