Vuelta is Shindell's first new studio album since moving to Argentina in 2000. (2002's Courier was a live set recorded at venues around New York City the year prior.) The nine originals here are joined by a cover of Pete Seeger's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," all of which are united by a keen sense of portraiture, quiet dignity, and subtle narrative dramatics. It may well be that living abroad has sharpened his talent for telling stories set back home, in some cases through the eyes of foreigners or the disenfranchised. The emotionally compelling characters range from the taxi driver in "The Last Fare of the Day" to the little girl and her bird in "There Goes Mavis." --David Greenberger

Unbelievably beautiful.......2005-12-05
This album by Tekameli, a group that plays gypsy music, is excellent. It is a wonderful trip through the music styles of India, the Middle East and Spain. This music is like a cloud that started its journey in India, picked up the essence of music along its way and finally reached Spain where it showered its bounty. Sometimes joyous, at times contemplative and at other times wistful - an emotional trip. An excellent mix of sacred and secular music of the gypsies of the Perpignan region, this CD is a "desert island" one.

Customer Reviews:
For the songwriter aficionado.......2007-02-26
Richard Shindell has some of the most insightful compositions out there. Not every cut on this album is a gem, but enough of them are to make it a classic for the audio library.
I like Hazel's House, Che Guevara T-Shirt, There Goes Mavis and So Says The Whipporwill best, but I can understand others choosing other selections as their faves. Two or three of the songs on this album are bound to stick with you.
This is an acoustic, singer/song writer style of album. If you're into heavy handed production, go elsewhere.
One of Richard's Best.......2007-02-20
My husband & I happened upon Richard listening to NPR and went right out and bought the CD "Somewhere Near Patterson." This was our favorite CD ever, playing right alongside Gordon Lightfoot on a regular basis. I would never have thought I'd like another CD better until this one. I never tire of listening to it.
tired, repetitive, un-lyrical.......2006-11-30
as a big shindell fan (have all his albums including cry, cry, cry) I was bitterly disappointed in this album. His delivery of unnecessarily convoluted lyrics seems forced. His songs all seem to be in the same key with the same picking pattern, despite a variety of instruments and production elements.
The delivery and emotion that you love Richard for just weren't there for me in this album. Any other album, I'd be forced to find a song I didn't like.
Sultry.......2006-03-03
From the first song to the last, Richard Shindell has a natural ability to compose and perform with strength and softness simultaneously. This is one of my favorite recordings.Beautiful !
New Sound But Better :) .......2005-12-10
It took me about five or six listenings to begin to let the beauty of this CD sink in. This recording, like "Somewhere in Patterson" takes awhile to rub off on you, and when it does you are hooked for good. What an eloquent style and sensitive collection of songs. Best tracks are "Fenario," "Hazel's House" and "Big Muddy." The instrumentation is great. The album also seems to be a bit more political, which is OK, as long as he doesn't hang his hat on politics like Jackson Browne started to do.
The only criticism I have, and it is minor, is that Lucy Kapansky should be used more for back up vocals. They have a unique vocal chemistry that cannot be replaced.

Album Description
Ida y Vuelta, literally round trip, narrowly defined, is a term used by flamencos to describe those musical forms that have "returned" to Spain from the Caribbean and Latin America. The guajira is an example of "ida y vuelta" that began in Cuba with harmonies brought by the Spanish and returned to Spain to be transformed into the flamenco from which features a 12 count rhythm and alternate harmonic changes.
In a broader sense, "ida y vuelta" is about our own personal journeys, both literal and spiritual. The music on this CD occurred because of exploration and a fascination with other cultures.

What Makes a Great C.D.:.......2006-10-24
Technical prowess, excellent source material, chemistry beween musicians and something that gets better with every listen. Ida y Vuelta would be a "desert Island" c.d. You will not get tired of it. There are elements of world music that you can easily track the musical odyssey of this group. As great as the c.d. is; you must see them live! Their energy, prowess and passion is infectious! I would highly recommend this to anyone having an interest in flamenco and world music. This is definitely one for any world music fan's collection.
A musical journey.......2003-03-19
I found this CD to be exceedingly infectious. Some songs are just blazing with energy, while others are more tranquil. The musical performances are simply wonderful. Being a guitarist, I found much to my liking. Carlo really displays his abilities by playing Flamenco-esque material and classical guitar music. The singers in this group are also quite astounding. As for the rest of the musicians, they add nice colors to the already rich sound. I would recommend this CD to anyone who loves Flamenco, Nuevo Flamenco, and latin music.

Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman has made a specialty of the piano music of South America. Her previous CDs of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Ernesto Lecuona were thoroughly delightful. Now she offers a wide-ranging program of mostly brief, dance-based piano music in forms from South America, although written by composers from many countries. You have to follow the track listing inside the booklet (the listing on the tray card is virtually illegible) to find out whether the delightful piece you are hearing was written by Gottschalk, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Weill, or Ginastera. But whatever the music, it's all entertaining and sometimes (as with Piazzolla) considerably more than that. Ferman's playing encompasses all these styles convincingly, and the recording conveys the piano sound with considerable realism. Romeo needs to clean up its presentation; aside from the badly-designed tray card, the pianist's biography comes right in the middle of the program notes on the music. But for its contents, this is the most entertaining piano collection since Gloria Cheng's Piano Dance and it's highly recommended. --Leslie Gerber

From Africa to Cuba and from Cuba to Argentina.......2006-03-16
I don't mean to be over zealous with my Cuban/Spanish Moorish heritage, and I agree with my Argentinean counterpart soldiers who are here in Eastern Europe with me serving as peace keepers with NATO, that certain things have to be clear and made public, so that people can be educated. This is the purpose of this review. This CD is an excellent recording of the different styles of Habaneras, Milongas and Tangos, they all are related. The roots are from Africa/Cuba brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors. The great German writer Rodolfo A. Windhausen states in one of his research report on the roots of the Tangos the following: "I learned about the Cuban roots of Tango. The Habanera rhythm was brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors in the nineteenth century. In fact, there is still one Milonga in Havana, once a week, for a small Tango community". If you want to hear Habaneras check the CD " Habaneras By Maria Teresa Vera" and Habaneras by Marco Rizo on both of these CD's you will hear the roots of Tangos played by one of the most respected Cuban guitar player(Maria Teresa Vera) of all times. I first heard of the Habaneras when I was young. My father would play them on his guitar while my mother would join him in singing the songs. My favorite was "twenty years" which is a classic! This is a good starting point for those who enjoy the Tangos, Milongas and the Habaneras interpreted here by this great pianist from Uruguay. Che, buy it, you will not regret it! It's part of your rich Argentinean culture.
Habaneras, Milongas, Tangos.......2001-11-04
This is delightful! The pianist is superb in her interpretation of the pieces. The music takes you away to another world.

Good - but not their best.......2004-10-09
I have been a fan of Jarabe de Palo for quite a few years now. While this album shows some stylistic experimentation, I think it comes up a bit short compared to "Depende" and "La Flaca." Still, they win points for taking risks, and as always, the lyrics are great.
A Favorite.......2002-06-04
I brought this CD home with me after spending a semester in Spain. It's quickly become a favorite of mine purely on its musical merit. Each song is distinctive from the others on the album, but they all tie together really well. The CD is really fun and chill at the same time.
This band can really play music.......2001-07-12
If you've seen them live you know this album doesn't make any justice to their talent as musicians. "Tiempo" and "Dos días en la vida" are my favorites, but there are many other interesting tracks such as "Completo incompleto" or "Mamá" (amazing blues/flamenco).
By the way, Pau is such an interesting person, I'm glad to say I had the chance to interview him a few months ago and he's really a nice, intelligent guy.
And correcting the guy from San Francisco, Jarabe is not a Mexican band (I wish they were!), they're Spanish.
Absolutely wonderful.......2001-06-28
This is the first CD of a Mexican band I have ever bought. I heard it in a music store and it hasn't left my CD player yet. Absolutely wonderful mix of musical styles, I'm surprised how much I love this CD.

Dominican singer-percussionist Chichi Peralta makes De Vuelta al Barrio an international affair. Recorded in the Dominican Republic and England and partially mixed in the U.S., this album also reflects an understanding of world rhythms that allows Peralta to mix and match effortlessly and convincingly. De Vuelta is most successful when Peralta takes the biggest chances: "El Beso de Judas" is a four-minute meld of psychedelic guitar effects, Brazilian percussion, sitar, and droning chant that would bring a smile to Os Mutantes' faces, while "Baila Venga Chichi" is handily and intensely rapped. A few tracks get bogged down in lite-radio clichés, but moments like the child's giggles at the end of "Hasta Que Lo Pierde" underscore the record's status as an intriguingly personal addition to the Latin-pop canon. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Es de el Barrio.......2005-09-08
I bought this cd because it came up under "guaguanco". I assure you it is not even close. Its more along the lines of Latin pop and its not even good music to boot. I hope his other albums are better b/c this one is a flop! If you've never heard of Chichi Peralta, don't even worry about it!
Sin Cortinas.......2001-01-18
I have had the pleasure of listening to both of ChiChi's cds and I love them both. This one, however, has reached deep into my soul. The distinctive rhythms and sounds displayed in his music clearly show what an artist he really is.
Thank you ChiChi.
The difficult second album!.......2000-08-06
3 and a half stars if that rating were possible. This is mostly a very good CD, well worth a listen, and it grows on you too.
My initial reaction, comparing it to "Pa' Otro La'o", was slight disappointment, but I think it has to be recognised that that CD was something very special indeed and would be hard to emulate (anybody starting with Chichi Peralta should buy that one rather than this).
His arrangements are always exciting and inventive, and really shine on many tracks with surprises around every corner. Occasionally, things become a bit cluttered, and I found the American light soully feel of some of the singing watered down some of the Latin spirit.
Certainly, Jandy Feliz (singer and songwriter on the first CD) is missed, both for his distinctive voice and his more melodic, catchy songwriting - he and Chichi combined made an unbeatable team, but there is still some great music on here.
Chichi Peralta is one of the most talented, creative Latin musicians around and maintains his high standard here, while perhaps not quite matching the heights of his brilliant first CD.
His new CD is a suave blend of his many musical influences........2000-07-28
His unique style of blending bachata, merengue and salsa is what makes his music exciting and like no other. His talent and inovation make his music memorable and a pleasure to listen to. He is good!
Disappointing, with a reason.......2000-07-17
After the sheer enjoyment I got of his previous work, "Pa' Otro La'o", I had high hopes for this album. Alas, those hopes are mashed; most tracks are muddled and uninspiring, with a few interesting flashes here and there that hardly justifiy the purchase. More noticeably, not a single track has the "pull you to the dance floor" feel that was almost everywhere in the previous debut. This "fuson" stuff is for the birds.
Turns out this shouldn't be surprising; the creator of key anchor tracks in the previous effort ("Amor Narcotico", "Pa' Otro La'o", "Un Dia Mas", "Procura", and "Limon con Sal", fully half of the record and almost every hit), Jandy Feliz, who was also the vocalist, is no longer with the group, reportedly because of differences with Peralta over getting greater credit for hiswork. And it shows.
Boy, does it show. The album is a pale shadow of the debut. Save your money and spend it on "Pa' Otro La'o" instead.

Great Rock Latino.......2004-03-15
Malanga blends the traditional latin music with rock creating a genuine Rock Latino sound.
Representing the Venezuela music scene along with Amigos Invisibles and Caramelos de Cianuro,TREN DE VUELTA is MALANGAs second album. This work shows a mature band that has found itself after experimenting with different styles in the very eclectic LP "Ta' Trancao".
If you like Aterciopelados, Cafe Tacuba, Juanes, La Ley, Los Rabanes, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and Mana, MALANGAs album is a MUST in your collection.
Enjoy!
