Album Description
One of the most enduring acts in American music, Peter Paul And Mary both defined and transcended the 1960s folk revival. The trio's passionate commitment to peace and social justice made them the conscience of an era as they soulfully communicated political concerns through music in an unprecedented way. At the same time that they reached millions with their social message, they acheived phenomenal mass popularity.

The penultimate collection!.......2007-07-31
This is truly the penultimate collection of songs by Peter, Paul & Mary. Having grown up listening to their music, I can safely say that this is the album that you'll ever need to appreciate the beautiful melodies and breathtaking songs of this well loved American trio. All the songs that made them who they are are here and my personal fave is the wedding song that is so moving. Get this CD while you can and forget all the other best of collections out there, this is the one you really need!
Not much extra.......2007-07-27
Their 10 Years album had most of the great songs already. This album doesn't add that much more.
The Very Best of Peter, Paul & Mary.......2007-07-27
We loved the CD. It was a wonderful collection exactly what we were looking for. The shipment came quickly and the price was great!
Pure Folk.......2007-07-21
Loved this CD. I grew up listening to this group and they sound wonderful on this record. "I Dig Rock and Roll Music" and others make this a great listen. Mellow out with P, P, & M.
Excellent for country song lovers.......2007-07-05
Songs are of high standard. However, the quality of the CD is substandard to the ears of an audiophile fan. Background of the recordings has a bit of noise, not absolutely clear. Overall, a good CD for a sunny day.

Despite denied claims that it's about marijuana, "Puff the Magic Dragon" now ranks as one of the finest children's songs in musical history. It's sung around campfires and in nursery schools to this very day (while still occasionally taking a tug at adults' heartstrings as well). So, it only made sense when Peter, Paul & Mary released this "kiddies" LP in 1969, beginning a trend they've returned to throughout their career. Mary Travers had indeed recently become a "mommy," and the trio celebrate here not only with a new version of their classic tune and the traditional "Mockingbird," but clever children's songs from the likes of Tom Paxton, Gilbert & Sullivan, and Shel Silverstein. --Bill Holdship

Still great after 40 years.......2007-05-14
I grew up listening to this album in the 70's, and just like in the lyrics for "The Marvelous Toy" when I played the CD almost forty years later for my own son he loved it just like me!
Lah-lah Blah.......2007-01-05
I ordered this album to introduce our children to some great folk music. The music is ok but not nearly as engaging and upbeat of tempo as I expected for a children's album from said artists. For a very engaging selection that might even entertain the parent occasionally, try Sarah Hickman's Toddler cd.
Beautiful...........2006-11-30
I love this CD. It's the only Peter, Paul, and Mary CD I own, but I play it quite a bit. I love The Marvelous Toy and Going to the Zoo (2 Tom Paxton songs), Day is Done (a Peter Yarrow original), Boa Constrictor (lots of fun), and, of course, I adore the song Puff the Magic Dragon. It's a wonderful, wonderful song, and for those who say Puff has a lot of camp value, they're fools. It's one of the most poignant, sad, heartbreaking songs ever written. It is absolutely wonderful. There's a reason so many people love the song. This is a real treat of an album, and it's a rare case in which a children's album is not dumbed down and stupid....
Excellent CD!!!!.......2006-08-09
I absolutely love this CD!!! My 5 month old son and I listen to it ALL the time. I am going to purchase "Peter, Paul and Mommy Too" here real soon.
Sweet treat for all ages.......2006-05-10
This album is so wonderful for the whole family. We listen to it with our 1 year old and she loves it. We can play it over and over without getting tired of it. Such a difference from those saccharine kids' cds my friends play!! I hope that lots of people having kids now will get this album so we can teach the next generation that music doesn't have to be dumb or full of 'attitude' to be enjoyable. Beware, though: if you don't cry during "Puff The Magic Dragon" you should hurry to the doctor and have your heart checked!!

Warner Bros. did with the CD release of the 1970 vinyl LP 10 Years Together: Best of Peter, Paul & Mary what every label should do with CD reissues of vinyl compilations. They took into account the longer length of CDs and added tracks. The original release of 10 smash hits has been fleshed out here with three additional tracks, including a melodic take on Dylan's Basement Tapes rarity "Too Much of Nothing." Otherwise, it's hits and nothing but hits, ranging from definitive folk interpretations ("If I Had a Hammer") to pop ("I Dig Rock 'n' Roll Music") to Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot covers that compete with the originals and first brought such material to the mainstream. Only "Cruel War" is missing. --Bill Holdship

Good music, but misleading professional review.......2006-10-18
I'm sure that all of us who remember PP&M welcome a CD reissue if only because we won't have to listen to the scratches and the skips that a well-loved record album is burdened by. But I'm surprised at the Amazon review posted ahead of all the "amateurs" because there are NO NEW TRACKS on the CD. The record has 13 tracks, not 10, as the review so prominently claims. I agree with the other amateur reviewers who would like to hear some of the other PP&M songs added, such as "This Land is Your Land" and "Where Have all the Flowers Gone." And it's understandable that all the recording company wanted to do was reissue the original. But please, Amazon, don't advertise a product as something it's not.
A Classic of American Folk Music.......2006-10-08
I still have this on vinyl, but just never bother with the stereo anymore. I pounced on the CD and popped it into my player, so once again I can relive the sound that meant so much to me in my college days. It's still a mellow blending of voices and a great selection of songs.
You get your classic folk tunes (Blowin' in the Wind and If I Had a Hammer), plus 60s songs like Too Much of Nothing and I Dig Rock and Roll Music. I love their version of Lemon Tree and you just have to have Puff the Magic Dragon.
A marvelous album!
38 minutes of Greatest Hits.......2006-01-18
First released on LP in 1970, this greatest hits album contains several of the big hits by Peter, Paul, and Mary, the folk trio from the '60's whose classic works include "Puff the Magic Dragon" and their covers of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer," John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." The group's sound consisted of simple, feel-good, peace-loving, almost naive, harmonies with spare instrumentation (usually just guitars and acoustic bass) and without much of a hint of an edge (realizing that some of their music was "protest music" in spirit and assuming for the moment that "Puff!" wasn't about lighting up a doobie). This formula garnered them a loyal following in the '60's and no doubt has today's greying listeners harkening back to those good old days. Anyone who was a fan and hasn't heard them for years will find this a warm reminder of the classic tunes and times.
It's always a bit difficult to review a Greatest Hits album -- people always quibbling about what songs in their opinion were unjustly left out and which they could have done without. I always think that's pointless, but I can't resist jumping on the bandwagon this time... True, this CD release improves on the earlier LP version by adding 3 tracks, but the total playing time still only comes to less than 38 minutes. That just doesn't cut it for me in the age of the CD format. So, what would I add? Well, how about "This Land is Your Land," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," or "Kumbaya," "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "Down By The Riverside," or even "Because All Men Are Brothers." Ah, fair enough... if I'd wanted those tracks, I should have purchased either the 2CD collection, "Around the Campfire" or the newly released and remastered "The Very Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary." Don't get me wrong, "Ten Years Together" is a decent album with some classic hits from PPM, but if you want something more complete and a better value for your $, check out either of those two albums first -- I wish I had (and I wish I'd read a review that made this clear). Then again, with "The Very Best..." available now, you should be able to pick up "Ten Years Together" for a dollar or two.
Crisp American folk music.......2005-10-16
A music collection that contains classical numbers from the classics of American folk music.
A collection that also makes me cruise to the 60's, both with its melodies and lyrics. The themes are socially and politically oriented making them even more universal.

The indefatigable folk trio of Peter, Paul & Mary is a wonderful focal point for younger listeners, toward whom this two-CD set is clearly geared. With a decidedly left-leaning approach to its craft--at least as far as the lyrics are concerned--the group selects great examples from its lengthy recording career. "If I Had a Hammer" veers from solemn consideration to exultant declaratives, working excellently enough that adults will certainly dig the music. Ditto for "Down by the Riverside" and "Light One Candle," which booms with an added mixed chorus, giving the song the power of a protest anthem. Not to paint this as an altogether-too-serious effort, though--"This Land Is Your Land" and "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" sweep the ears of kids up in deceptively minimal movements by the trio. Put succinctly, these two CDs mix kid-oriented and adult-oriented music with just the right touch. --Andrew Bartlett

Just old fashioned fun campfire songs.......2006-12-26
These are great sing-a-long songs for campfires or roadtrips
for any age. Some songs I've know forever and some I had never
heard of but enjoyed learning and now know by heart.
This is fun, fun stuff for all ages.
The songs you want your kids to know.......2006-12-14
I've seen far too many adults stick a DVD movie in the back seat of the van to keep the little ones entertained during a long trip. They'd be better served to load up PP&M's Around the Campfire. This music, delivered by people whose voices are associated with many of the songs, is quite likely to generate family sing-alongs in the old style. (Though I'll warn you that a three-year-old stuck on Puff the Magic Dragon ("Again!" she screeched) can be a special form of hell.)
Even if you didn't sing all the songs on this album when you went to summer camp -- I did, but my Camp Quidnunc days were only 100 miles from Greenwich Village where these songs first earned fame -- you are sure to know and enjoy at least 90% of them. They're a sort of aural comfort food, I find, even if there's no one under the age of 10 in the vicinity.
Peter Paul & Mary - a nostalgic experience.......2006-07-16
If you like(d) PP&M in the 60s, you'll love them now. A couple of songs I've never heard, but the majority is a collection of songs taken from their albums. A trip down memory lane, and just hearing songs like Blowin' In The Wind, This Land is Your Land, If I Had a Hammer and Down By The Riverside, to name a few on this 2 disc CD, brought me back to the days when we protested peacefully because it was our right; now I'm afraid to send in my dues to the ACLU because I might end up on a list somewhere. Pretty tragic.
Great Music But....................Not My Camp Songs!.......2006-07-09
First of all, let me start by stating that I LOVE Peter, Paul and Mary. I can still shed a tear when I listen to "Puff the Magic Dragon," probably one of my favorite songs. Their folk songs are unquestionably, classics. "Peter, Paul, and Mommy" is one of my very favorite albums. I played it for my students on my record player many years ago and then, when my daughter was in kindergarten, I lent it to her teacher; it was played every day during naptime.
I feel that I am somewhat of an authority when it comes to camp songs. Although I sing them badly, I have sung them for many, many decades. I attended Girl Scout camp during the sixties in both Alabama and New Mexico. I remember singing all the songs with my sister during the long ride home every year. I have also been to Church camp (didn't sing many campfire songs, much to my dismay) and I was a counselor at a camp in northeast Georgia for two summers during college in the seventies. In addition, I was a Girl Scout Leader for ten years during the next two decades. So, as you see, I am somewhat of an expert when it comes to singing around the campfire....anyone remember "Barges"?
So, it was with great anticipation that I ordered " Around the Campfire" (without looking at the sound track). I was planning on 'cranking up the radio' and singing along with the trio in my car! Unfortunately, the only songs on the first CD that we ever sang were: "If I Had A Hammer" and " Where Have All The Flowers Gone"--two of ten. I had better luck on the second CD; we sang: " Kumbaya", " Michael Row The Boat Ashore", "Puff (The Magic Dragon)", "500 Miles", and "Blowin in the Wind."
Only seven of the twenty songs were familiar to me from my camp days; if I had inspected this album before ordering, I would never have bought it. Even though I have 'buyer's remorse,' the singing is typical of Peter, Paul and Mary, just fabulous.
Good, not Great.......2005-08-23
This review is not original in context of some of the other reviews, but I thought it was important to emphasize that this recording contains much of their recent work, which is clearly not to the high standards of their ealier work. Reliant as they are on their voices, their aging has naturally effected the quality of their singing.
The musicianship is excellent as usual, but this is clearly not a 5-star album in light of their other recordings.

Solid Debut of A Classic Folk Act.......2007-05-01
If you were alive in the early 60s, you certainly heard Peter,Paul and Mary on the radio and occasionally saw them on TV. Of course, back then the sound quality of either medium was less than stellar and those beautiful harmonies were very likely blurred. People fortunate enough to have then state-of-the-art hi-fi's or early stereos fared better, of course, and certainly the group's elegant vocals and skillful, straightforward instrumentals are even better served on today's equipment.
It's easy to treat this, their first album, as a trip down memory lane for aging boomers and pre-boomers. Their numerous PBS appearances in recent years are certainly nostalgia fests (not that there's anything wrong with that), but they're more than that. Musically this recording holds up well 45 years after its release. "Lemon Tree" and "If I Had a Hammer" were bona fide hits, of course, but the group's versions of "500 Miles," "Man of Constant Sorrow," and "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" could just have easily have charted during those early days of the folk boom. I'll let others debate over which of the many versions of these tunes are "definitive." Suffice to say, that PP&M's are excellent.
The lesser cuts are all performed with polish and understated passion. A novelty number like "It's Raining" holds up only to just so many hearings, however. Gospel purists may find "This Train" or even Paul Stookey's own gospel-tinged "Early In the Morning" a bit on the tepid side. Most listeners will accept them for what they are, however, earnest, understated interpretations of a tradition that the singers chose to honor even though it wasn't quite their own.
Of course, later on, PP&M would occasionally be criticized for "pretty-fying" the edgier contemporary folk compositions of Bob Dylan and other young troubadors of the era. They'd say the same thing about Judy and Joan, of course. But all those singers did their bit to popularize the genre, and make those compositions more palatable to the masses. And, yes, unless you really are an absolute purist, you have to admit that their takes on the material--and I'm talkin' Dave Van Ronk or Rev. Gary Davis here as well as Dylan--were certainly valid.
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-08
The music and songs are great except on every song, the recording stops before the song (and/or music is finished) and after paying almost $19.00, I am not very satisfied with the recording.
Totally Awesome.......2006-01-29
This album is as awesome today as it was 40 years ago. Although Peter, Paul and Mary have matured, they still sing what they believe and support wonderful causes like Operation Respect. Wish there were more groups like this today.
The debut of a popular folk trio.......2004-09-09
This trio consisting of Peter Yarrow,Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers are not just folk musicians and singers. They are folk rockers. All three sing and Yarrow and Stookey play guitars. Blonde beauty Travers holds a bouquet of flowers in her hands in the cover photo and Yarrow and Stookey hold their guitars. Hits from this album include 500 MILES,where Louisville,Kentucky born Travers takes the lead. Other hits include LEMON TREE,IF I HAD A HAMMER and IT'S RAINING.
Fell in Love With PP&M All over again.......2004-08-31
I have had this cd for several years as well as the albums "In the Wind" "Peter Paul & Mommy" and "The Best of PP&M (Ten Years Together)". About three weeks ago (as this is being written) they were part of a PBS fundraiser, and I got intererested in playing the dedut album again. There are so few artists making vital music now that I have been craving to listen to music with meaning, power and passion. When I replayed this album, its majesty and beauty really hit me. I can understand and appreciate how popular the album was. I read the reviews here and noted that one mentioned that the "Peter, Paul & Mary" album was not the biggest of 1962. Of course not-it was released mid-way through the chart year. What he failed to state was that it was the #2 selling album of 1963. It was also one of the Top 10 selling albums of 1964. It charted into 1965, spending over 180 weeks on Billboard's album chart. It was a powerhouse seller because its music mattered. This album is essential listening. Where Have All the Flowers Gone; their Grammy winning performance of If I Has A Hammer; their original Cruel War; Bamboo; Autumn to May; 500 Miles...music from heaven. Vocally, the trio are inspirational, and Peter and Paul's guitar playing is magnificent. This is what music is all about.

In a manner that their studio albums never could, Peter, Paul & Mary's live performances indicate much of what shot the trio to fame and influence during the folk revival. They were witty, sincere, and engaging entertainers, with strong, smooth voices and a smart sense of vocal dynamics. This record, originally released in 1964, and compiled from various venues, shows the trio at the top of their stylized game, both as individual performers and as a unit. Material includes the opener "Times They Are A-Changin'" and spirituals "Rock My Soul" and "Jesus Met the Woman," as well as the familiar "500 Miles" and "If I Had a Hammer." --Roy Francis Kasten

Great CD. I totally enjoyed the mix of songs and comedy. A great Laugh!
Peter, Paul & Mary prove they were meant to be heard "In Concert".......2005-09-18
At first I was surprised to discover that when Peter, Paul & Mary released "In Concert" they had only released three albums. But when the folk movement was in full flower lots of artists were releasing live albums, which is why what ends up being really surprising is that PP&M did not release their second live album until 1993. Maybe they just knew that they were not going to be able to top this one, because this double-album with its 81-minutes of music (and comedy) made listening to their studio albums no where near as much fun. Lots of groups sound better live than in the studio, and PP&M amply proves that here.
Of course there are some of the hits from the early part of PP&M's career: "A'soalin'" (#15 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart), "Blowin' in the Wind" (#2), and "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" (#2). The last one of that trio stands out because of Paul Stookey's introduction in which he defines the term "dragon." Discovering that Stookey has a wicked sense of humor during his "Paultalk" monologue is one of this album's pleasant surprises. In fact, there is a lot more comedy here than you would suspect, found not only in introductions to songs like "A' Soalin'" but also in having fun with Woody Guthrie's "Car-Car" and turning that song about "Blue," that good ol' dog, into an opportunity to make fun of rock & roll (not to mention folk song purists). Then there is the gentle fun of "It's Raining," which weaves all sorts of familiar children's songs together.
The album opens with what would have been a new Bob Dylan song in 1964 with "The Times They Are A' Changin'", which again reminds us that of course just about anybody singing a Dylan song sounds better than Dylan, but that most people are too busy paying attention to the lyrics to notice how beautiful the melodies are as well. The album closes with "If I Had A Hammer," so that the concert is neatly bookended by songs full of social consciousness. In between there are some traditional folk songs, such as "500 Miles," "Three Ravens," and "There is a Ship," with the group's original song "One Kind Favor" clearly in that style as well. Everybody gets to sing on 'On, Rock My Soul," Peter Yarrow sings "Le Desertuer" in French, and Mary Travers gets to do a solo on "Single Girl."
The two tracks that I have found I have absolutely loved over the years have ended up being the gospel songs "Jesus Met the Woman" on Disc 1 and "If I Had My Way" on Disc 2. What these two songs have in common is how the three are often singing completely different lyrics and weaving a rich harmony of sound while strumming those two guitars. Listening to these tracks is where I really wish I could see PP&M in concert and not just listen to them. The bottom line is that four decades later "Peter, Paul & Mary in Concert" is still my favorite PP&M album. The double-album was remixed by Peter Yarrow and Lee Herschberg, which would explain why it sounds better than ever.
Those concerts must have been fun.......2005-04-12
This is a SUPERB collection and is my PP&M favorite. I went off to college in 1964 and took my HS graduation gift "RECORD PLAYER" and was given this album as a gift from my sister. The guys in the dorm and I spent countless hours listening to those 2 LP's. We felt like we were "in the concert". When the "funny stuff" like Paultalk, Car-Car (Riding In My Car) and Blue came on we would quietly listen like it was the first time and then burst into laughter! There's no need to sell on the songs. They are all familiar standards. You either like folk music or you don't. What's fun is to think back to life during this era. Simple but extremely complicated. A date might be to take in the coffee shop and hear some great folk songs while drinking....COFFEE.KUMBAYA!! The next morning might see you carrying protest signs on campus or being involved in some other movement. I'll tell you how much I've enjoyed this collection. There was the original gift LP, it was later replaced with a tape cartridge, then a cassette tape and finally a CD. Oh, and I ripped the CD to MP3 files so I can enjoy them on the computer. I'm really a music buff. I still have huge collections of 78's, 45's, LP's, cartridges, cassettes, CD's and now MP3's. Tens of thousands of songs. I'd rank this collection in my top 25. Take a walk down memory lane with this great CD. Give it a try, you'll enjoy it.
The title says it all!.......2004-09-09
After three studio albums,Peter Yarrow,Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers decided to record some of their live performances. We start with Bob Dylan's THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN',one of his highly covered tunes. Billy Joel even recorded it live. A-SOALIN' from MOVING,is about Halloween, according to Stookey. 500 MILES is from PP&M's 1962 self-titled debut. The version on this album would later appear on THE BEST OF PETER,PAUL & MARY-TEN YEARS TOGETHER. BLUE,I think would later inspire the Nick Jr. cartoon. THREE RAVENS and ONE KIND FAVOR are OK. PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON,from MOVING,is a popular childrens' song. Forty years after the release of this album, the song would remain popular with generations that followed. CAR CAR and JESUS MET THE WOMAN are OK also. There's also another popular Dylan composition,BLOWIN' IN THE WIND,from 1963's IN THE WIND. That song asks nine questions,as mentioned by Yarrow. LE DESERTEUR is sung in French by Yarrow. Following that is ROCK MY SOUL. Again,Yarrow takes the lead vocal, this time asking the audience to join him. PAULTALK,a non-musical track where Stookey, who's a comedian as well as a musician, does bits about swimming, golf, cars and drive-in theaters. Stookey's comedy is a lot like Bill Cosby's(Cosby is PP&M's Warner Bros. Records labelmate). Travers takes the lead again for SINGLE GIRL(naturally, she would for that song). THERE IS A SHIP is cool. Also from the PP&M debut is IT'S RAINING,IF I HAD MY WAY and IF I HAD A HAMMER. I'm surprised Stookey never did any full comedy albums. There is a similar track on 1965's A SONG WILL RISE entitled TALKIN' CANDY BAR BLUES which Stookey's spoken vocal is heard.
I was there........2002-08-11
I saw PP&M at the Honolulu Amphitheater in 1964. They performed most of the songs from this CD. When the concert was over, there was no encore, only applause. Like Elvis, they had already left the building, and sadly, left us wanting more.

You could have some fun with the title in more suggestive times, but In the Wind refers here to the popular trio's classic recording of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." Interestingly, their recording did as much for Dylan's career as it did for PP&M's, for, while it sealed their image as the troubadours of the '60s civil rights movement, it helped posit the then-little-known Dylan as the voice of a generation. Other highlights here include their gorgeous interpretation of Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" as well as spirituals, a lullaby, and even a Civil War ballad. It may all seem quaint now, but when this LP reached No. 1 in 1963, only weeks after John F. Kennedy's assassination, the folk movement was in full throttle...and something was definitely in the air. Or in the wind, so to speak. --Bill Holdship

"In the Wind" on cd.......2007-04-12
I love this cd. It brings back memories of old record albums. I am so glad you offer some of these older selections.
It has great sound!
Very Disappointed.......2007-03-08
The original album and songs are just the greatest ever. So, I ordered the CD and on EVERY song, the very last part of each song is cut off before it is finished, which is so disturbing.
PP and M do not hold up well in the new century..........2006-09-21
I was a fan from the beginning, but over the decades I think this trio's work has seemed more dated than that of their rivals, The Kingston Trio, The Chad Mitchell Trio, The Highwaymen, and Jim and Jean. Maybe it is the too-frequent and too-familiar reunions on PBS that bothers me. This album is memorable only for the two Dylan songs, "Don't Think Twice" and "Blowin' in the Wind" and yet the latter song has become annoying to me in recent years. Read the review below by "J in Boston" who complains about the price for these CD transfers of the original LP's, and also protests the lack of Mary Travers' later solo albums on compact disc. He is right on both counts. Neither Peter nor Paul's later solo efforts were memorable, but Mary had at least two releases which were superb.
Great cd - ridiculous price.......2006-08-22
I love this recording. In fact I love all the PP&M recordings from the 60's. I bought all of them on vinyl when originally released and they remain a very important part of my life. But I'm not really here to comment on the quality of the recording itself. Many of you have already done that and I have nothing unique to add.
What I do want to comment on is the pricing of this and all the other PP&M recordings from the 60's. They are a perfect example of why so many people have simply stopped buying recorded music and/or feel no guilt about making copies of the recordings they have bought. These discs are priced at 18.99 which is the same full price as a new release, although you would almost never have to actually pay that much for a new release. What excuse can there be for pricing these discs this way? They are now close to half a century old, have long since turned a profit, are only about 30 minutes long and have been issued in perfectly acceptable, but nothing special, cd transfers with no extras of any kind.
If the discs offered something more to justify their cost or had been issued as "twofers", since many of these albums could easily be doubled up on a single disc or been issued as midprice discs I would have bought every single one of them. Instead I have dubbed my vinyl recordings to cd, except in a few cases where my vinyl was simply no longer in good enough condition.
I know that if I want more of the music I like to be available that I have to spend money on it and I am more than willing to do that. However, I do expect some value for my dollar. Bonnie Raitt's old albums which are also on Warner Bros. have all been remastered twice and are available at a reasonable midprice. I don't know if the continued high price of the PP&M discs is a decision of the singers or the label, but isn't it time they used a little common sense and realized that after all these years they just might be able to sell a few more discs and make more money if they lowered the price.
Now that I've got that off my chest I would really like to make a plug for cd releases of Mary Travers' solo albums.
Their best ever. Maybe anybody's best ever........2006-03-04
Great song selection, fabulous sonics, good cover artwork, what's not to love? Perhaps the best album of the Folk Era, and definitely PP&M's best work. I'm first, foremost, and forever a Kingston Trio fan, but this album is better than any one KT album,(sorry Bob, Nick and John)with the possible exception of "Time To Think" which was released at exactly the same time.
Maybe there really was something "In the Wind" then.

This CD was good but not half as good as the first one, "Peter Paul and Mommy". Peter, Paul and Mary are legends and anything they sing is great! I can't wait until my son is old enough to appreciate this music more.

Fun for all ages. Even the lyrics of "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" have been revised to be gentler.
The performances here are especially ballad-like, so if you are looking to rock out, look elsewhere.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

This is a terrific CD. The music is breathtaking. Just buy IT !!!!!
The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21
Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!
Brilliant.......2001-10-31
Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.
These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.
Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20
If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.
This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.
A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.
it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.
Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30
With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.
An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.
Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Following hot on the heels of their enormously successful collaboration for The Lion King, Elton John and Tim Rice have once again culled their talents to create another Disney contemporary musical, based this time on Verdi's opera Aida. The album, recorded by some of the biggest talents of pop, country, and R&B, features songs from the stage show, which recounts the well-known tale of a love triangle further complicated by slavery, royalty, and the armed forces. John duets to great effect with country crooner LeAnn Rimes, the enchanting Janet Jackson, and the lovely Lulu of To Sir with Love fame. Lush and lively, the soundtrack hits a hoot of a (decidedly not highbrow) high point with the infectious pop of the Spice Girls warbling the merits of undergarments on "My Strongest Suit" ("Always wear underwear/Anytime, anywhere"). Lenny Kravitz funks things up with "Like Father Like Son." Shania Twain's husky emoting makes a fine pop ballad of the brief "Amneris' Letter." "Not Me" chronicles the goodness of love as Boyz II Men coo dreamily, their harmonies nestling into John's sumptuous score. --Paige La Grone

Product arrived in a timely manner in new condition, still wrapped in plastic. Thank you.
Loved it!!!.......2006-09-07
I'm so impressed with this album for several different reasons.
3) It's Elton John
2) I loved all but two of the songs!
1) I usually hate the original broadway cast albums and movie soundtracks. They don't do the songs justice. They usually have chopped up versions of the songs and include unnecessary dialouge.
I'd love to see every musical (broadway or movie) done this way!
I appreciate the b'way versions, but I don't want to listen to them in my car...
good variety and feeling.......2004-06-24
This is a very good CD. "Written in the Stars" is an extremely emotional song, and it is my favorite on the album. I would like to see the show on Broadway, but I have to say I don't think it can be too much better than this CD
Sour Concepts.......2003-06-29
It takes so much to try to get a musical to make its way upon Broadway. Sometimes you really need to understand how to make it really happen within the passion of the storytelling music. In that case with Elton John, he nearly seemed to make it with Aida. While the music for Broadway always seems to have at least something completely mgaical and a dash of power in it. Sometimes, you really need to understand it, to make it happen, and others don't see it from the start. Although Elton John has had great music for years, at least once in a era, something goes a little flat.
The 1999 Aida, was not a studio album from Elton, but a preview from what was happen on Broadway. The various artists record contains so many different artists in the record including Tina Turner, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, and the upcoming Heather Headley. Before Heather made it as a singer, she made it right here in Aida, on this record. The only decent song that was a hit was Written In The Stars, which Elton performed with Leann Rimes. The song was also the last song Elton cracked Billboard's Top 40. Still, there really wasn't a lot of enjoyment within most of the record, and it fell into a sleeper. Considering that Elton is already planning on making another smash musical on Broadway, hopefully he'll do better with the concept record.
When it does come to making it on Broadway, it isn't really anything exciting, unless it truly is a smash, and Aida is a smash on Broadway, just not the record. Still, if you're a die hard fan of Aida, buy this record. Otherwise, it could be a hitless miss.
Living Elaborate Lives..........2002-11-02
Aida was Elton John and Tim Rice's baby, providing a concept soundtrack album before even setting the stage on fire, the tracks are generally sweeping show ballads.
Elton teams up with several lovely and talented ladies, in LeAnn Rimes, Janet Jackson, and Lulu. "Written In The Stars" could be a vocal gladiator battle, the way LeAnn and Elton sing it. Janet and Lulu prove themselves as more mellow duet partners.
Kelly Price makes "The Gods Love Nubia" her own, the song is tied up in soul with her voice being smooth as silk. The far too short "Amneris' Letter" shows off Shania Twain's voice to perfection also. Pop culture phenomenon the Spice Girls turn "My Strongest Suit" into the most obvious pop stomper of this set. Another strong point is Heather Headley's solo "Elaborate Lives". A rich ballad, Headley recently embarked on an R&B singing career with the track "He Is". The legendary Tina Turner provides a fiery perfomance, her track being the powerful "Easy As Life" with Angelique Kidjo.
Duds are also present, Sting and Dru Hill's tracks are admitted stinkers. James Taylor, Boyz II Men, Sherie Scott, and Lenny Kravitz also deliver perfomances on the album. This album is well put together, with strong tunes and a short-list of superstars presenting them. A fun buy.
