Product Description
"Out Beyond Ideas" is a unique collection of songs written to Sacred Poetry by David Wilcox and Nance Pettit. Inspired by ancient mystic poems from many faith traditions, the common theme of love and searching translate into beautiful and thoughtful music. While not a traditional David Wilcox album, fans will find his same soothing and inspirational way of story telling with the added bonus of Nance's beautiful, airy vocals. * Proceeds from the album will go to the Partners In Conflict and Partners In Peacebuilding project at the Center for International Development and Conflict Management-University of Maryland which works with high-risk countries around the world to help them build a sustainable, just and inclusive peace.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you are a fan of David Wilcox !!!.......2006-07-12

I saw David in concert a couple of month's ago, and was hooked.
I love his songs, voice, guitar, timing and the emotion he can put into his voice. I am neither personally religious or spiritual, but I can appreciate music that is, and I thought that David's style would meld beautifully with the songs. Unfortunately this album is more of a vehicle for David's wifes' voice than his, and so I was sorely disappointed. David is very much the background singer. Nancy's voice is O.K. but not anything special and not what I wanted to listen too. Very disappointing CD.
So, if you want to hear David Wilcox sing, pick a different CD.

4 out of 5 stars Pop Folk Goes All Rumi on Us.......2006-02-17

This is a beautiful CD on many levels. Lacking the religous imperialism common to western spiritual music, and free of the nerve racking sound of eastern spiritual music, "Out Beyond Ideas" is able to present mystical poetry in a very musical and accessible way. You can learn all the words and sing along as you drive down the highway. Very uplifting. Call it the "Abbey Road" of spiritual music.

My only complaint has to do with the mixing. At times (not always) Mr. Wilcox's voice is mixed at the same tone and volume as the music, the result is a muddying of the vocals. This only happens here and there, for the most part, the sound is good, but it could've been a little better. Take half a star off for that and you have a solid 4.5 star CD.

Hopefully we'll see more CD's of this pop folk meets Rumi type, if they keep making them, I'll keep buying 'em!

Highly recommended.

    Album Description

The album and song title Out Beyond Ideas, comes from a poem by the 12th-century Sufi poet, Jelalludin Rumi. The project was produced by Windham Hill pianist, composer and Montana native, Philip Aaberg. The tracks were recorded at The Garage in Reese Creek, Montana, and mixed and mastered at Spark Studios in Emeryville, California, where Jai Uttal and numerous San Francisco Bay-area artists have recorded. Best described as “contemporary world music”, Out Beyond Ideas features 10 original compositions by Matthew Marsolek. With melodic and rhythmic influences from West Africa and India, the music is grounded in the band's extensive jazz, folk and classical background. Mandir's original instrumentation and its use of voices for instrumental textures creates a surprising depth of sound from a four-member ensemble.
