Once cited by Bob Dylan as the first performer he'd want to sign to his own label, Leon Redbone instead made his 1976 recording debut with Warner Brothers. On the Track carries a "very special thanks" to Jelly Roll Morton and Jimmie Rodgers, and indeed sounds like the offspring of the pioneering jazzman and the early hillbilly blues singer, with perhaps a bit of Bing Crosby tossed in. Aided by a small horn section (including a prominent tuba) and violinist Joe Venuti, among others, the disc is a gorgeous, affectionate tribute to pre-World War II vernacular music. Redbone croons and growls his way through a repertoire that includes Rodgers, Fats Waller, Irving Berlin, and "Polly Wolly Doodle," the last of which inspired album-cover artist Chuck Jones to include "a grasshopper sittin' on the railroad track... pickin' his teeth with a carpet tack." Redbone and crew rise to peak after peak (hear Venuti's finessed high-wire act on "Some of These Days"), resulting in a record that makes for perfect Saturday night and Sunday morning listening. --Rickey Wright

30 years later, I still listen to this one regularly.......2007-02-22
This is my favorite Leon Redbone album, although I adore several others. And its the one for which I have memorized the most songs and happily sing with or without the record.
On The Track.......2007-02-14
Loaded with great songs, this album has tunes that I remember not knowing when I was young. They sound fresh & full of wit, charm, and intricate fingerpicked lovelyness. I'm getting his hole catalog... but you might want to start with just this disc first.
Leon Redbone - On the Track.......2007-01-03
The only song I like on this cd is "Saving My Love For You". It's a classic.
Old Times, Good Times.......2006-11-04
Leon Redbone is a master at what he does- producing fun loving songs that are an enjoyment form beginning to end
Old-timey tunes, a voice, a guitar and a throat-tromnet ; stir well and serve.......2006-10-28
A favourite musician of mine, the very secretive Leon Redbone has released twelve studio albums to this day and his first, "On the Track", was released on LP by Warner Bros. in 1975. This album eventually reached Gold LP status.
Leon Redbone applies his skills to the interpretation of an eclectic blend of musical styles including old-timey jazz, ragtime, acoustic folk, blues and country standards, minstrel show tunes and radio ditties coming from a period broadly extending to the turn of the century to WWII. There is a definite nostalgic feel, which relates Redbone's music to a more relaxed period in American musical history.
This artist displays his skills, mainly, as a singer and guitarist. First, of course, there is that voice: a deep, resonant, highly distinctive and somehow gravely baritone, sometimes mutating into his fabled "throat tromnet" that is his way to aurally approximate the sound of brass instruments.
Redbone has a good mastery of the acoustic guitar (he also sometimes plays the banjo.) Although not a virtuoso, he fingerpicks in a ragtime style that allows him to sing and play at the same time. Chords, however, are played with dexterity.
Redbone's interpretations of his chosen material are certainly not faceless covers. If his goal is to communicate the music he loves, he nevertheless adopts an oft irreverent, off beat approach to these old classics and makes just plain fun to listen to these songs again.
One aspect that I really like about his work is that everything is so laid-back. Besides this is an un-plugged recording without any electric instrument to be heard. Another pleasant aspect, to my ears, is the funny double-entendre of some of the lyrics.
On the Track is a fantastic album filled with songs that make you feel like you have been time warped back to the first decades of the past century. His music makes me smile.
Redbone's first LP benefits immensely from the production work of famed jazz producer Joel Dorn. He is supported by a decidedly varied cast of top notch players, from Garnett Brown (trombone) to Steve Gadd (drums) to Joe Venuti (violin), to name a few. Their contributions are discreet and tastefully augment the highly developed and melody-intensive arrangements. It is clear that melodies, harmonies, and finesse figure highly in what Redbone purports to achieve.
The eleven selections include two Jimmie Rodgers compositions: "Sweet Mama Hurry Home Or I'll Be Gone" (with delightful steel guitar and clarinet) and "Desert Blues (Big Chief Buffalo Nickel)" that features delicate brass ensemble playing and Redbone's throat tromnet).
"Big Time Woman" was written by Wilton Crawley, a clarinettist, who recorded it with an orchestra including Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton. Rodgers and Morton receive "very special thanks" from Redbone in the album credits.
The way he treats "Polly Wolly Doodle", the children song, in the same style as the rest of the album is amazing; Don McLean plays great banjo on this track.
Most of the other tunes are popular tunes written by celebrated songwriters (Irving Berlin, Hoagy Carmichael, Fats Waller, Shelton Brooks, etc) and made famous by a truckload of well-known artists (Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Django Reinhardt, Bing Crosby, Tommy Dorsey, you name them!) However, the artists who are the most often associated with six of the tunes are the Mills Brothers. They were a remarkable and talented vocal group that was both long lasting and extremely popular. Their music was smooth, good natured and warm. In the beginning, they incorporated a novelty into their act: they "played" tuba, trombone, and trumpet by cupping their hands over their mouth. They thus influenced Redbone and his throat-tromnet. Their single musical instrument was ... an acoustic guitar.
Those tracks are "Marie", "Lazybones", "Some of These Days", "Ain't Misbehavin'", "My Walking Stick" and "Lulu's Back In Town".
There is also one track titled "Haunted House" that is credited as "P.D. - Arranged by Leon Redbone". This blues ballad was recorded by Lonnie Johnson, the originator of the flat-picked single-note style of playing. The tune was recorded with this title by Lonnie Johnson and Elmer Snowden in 1960. However, it is a remake of "Blue Ghost Blues", which Johnson wrote and recorded in 1927. At the beginning of the tune, Redbone takes a rare fifty seconds guitar solo parts of which, to my ears, evoke the playing style of Lonnie Johnson but without a chance to attain the brilliance of Johnson's playing. Although vocally pleasing, I find this the weakest track on the album.
However, be warned: if you listen to this music and begin to dig it, it will prove very addictive.
In which case I suggest you to buy more albums, preferably in chronological order of release.
Now, pour yourself your favourite drink and/or pick your favorite smoke (if this is still allowed in your town), sit yourself comfortably and enjoy this masterpiece.

"Camel Walk" ALONE is worth 5 stars.......2006-08-22
There needs to be more music like THIS at dance clubs and honky-tonks. Southern Culture on the Skids is some classic country-rockabilly with a modern edge. The music may sound like it could be duplicated on your back porch, but it is also very contemporary and fresh and witty and worth at least a head-nod or some toe-tap, evne if you're dead. I prefer a real country strut with my honey on my arm during this whole album, maybe a little Presley imitation thrown in now and then (and I'm talking old school King, when he could still do some hardcore pelvis shots and sway his knees about). I'm a fan of isolated tracks on other albums (40 Miles to Vegas is just impossible to keep your foot on the floor to), but this one keeps me jiggling the whole way through.
I first heard from this album when a local radio show would play "Camel Walk" almost to death, but still every time I'd crank up the volume and rock along. The song is astoundingly swinging and funny and a little bit scary--S & M involving oatmeal snack pies? To this day, if something catches me by surprise, I'll call out, "Little Debbie, Little Debbie! I'ma comin' on home, baby!" This song is a little more methodical than tracks like "Nitty Gritty" and "Greenback Fly," which just makes you want to be Johnny Depp in _Cry Baby_ all over again. And songs like "Galley Slave" and "Skullbucket" will bring you back to those great instrumentals like "Pipeline" and "Jack the Ripper."
It is hard to avoid making comparisons with the Reverend Horton Heat when talking about Southern Culture, mainly because they both run the same fine line between making fun of rockabilly while also deeply praising it. If psychobilly is the new moniker for modern rockabilly, then let this band sit on the throne with the Rev and hold sway over all that is good and true and makes you rock your bones just one more time.
Dirt Track Great.......2006-03-03
All the songs on this album are good, definently worth buying. My husband and I have enjoyed everything we've heard from this band.
Happy Gilmore soundtrack?.......2005-02-21
The first I heard of this group was, naturally, on the radio. The song "Soul City" (which none of the other "reviewers" mentioned)was occasionally being played on the radio, I believe, around the time Happy Gilmore came out. Coincidence? Not too many songs I hear on the radio DRIVE me to go ASAP to the store to get. I can't describe it's noise, but it affected me the same way Home Fries did. The movie? I was surprised of no soundtrack. I had to rent the movie to find Reverend Horton Heat's name. Then I had the unexpected ephiphany that maybe I was addicted to this strange, but not new genre, Rockabilly.
One of their best.......2004-09-25
I own every SCOTS CD they've put out. These guys are the
real deal Psychobillies. No poseurs, when they sing about fried
chicken, they're reallly singing about fried chicken. When was the last time you heard a CD that was just plain fun to
listen to?
This particular CD has been out for quite a while, but it's
worth tracking down. An excellent place to begin for those
unfamiliar with them. Best listened to with a bucket of
Col. Sanders, NASCAR on the TV, a bottle of supermarket scotch
on the TV tray and all your neighbors at the trailer park makin' that old doublewide rock...
Raucous fun; this band does better.......2004-05-04
A seemingly low three-star review for SCOTS is only due to the sense that SCOTS didn't reach its potential on this album. The sheer talent of this band flows from the seeming ease with which this album got tossed off. Perhaps the greatest charm of "DTD" is the sense that this group got together in a tin shed one hot North Carolina afternoon and tossed off 14 guilty pleasures.
Some of the songs stand up even against SCOTS' more polished work (check out "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down") - such as "Voodoo Cadillac," "Skullbucket," and "Nitty Gritty." Others, like "8 Piece Box" and "Dirt Track Date" sound like a good jam session gone awry -- the song has promise, but it doesn't seem to go anywhere.
The tiki-lounge beauty of "Make Mayan a Hawaiian" is charming, and the quick little ditty, "Whole Lotta Things" is sure to get stuck in your head (in a good way) long after it's over.
Most of SCOTS' songs have lyrics that remind you that the band is just havin' fun riffing away, and that's perfect for lazy Saturday afternoons. Unfortunately, this apparently relaxed attitude keeps "DTD" out of my regular CD rotation despite its charms (unlike "Liquored Up and Lacqured Down," which is a staple).
When you're compiling your list of fruit to soak in grain alcohol for three days prior to your next party, make sure you jot down stopping by the record store to snag some SCOTS -- any SCOTS album is just what you need for the crazy good times.

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
the perfect movie.......2007-03-10
My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.
I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28
I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)
Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16
Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.
Great CD.......2006-03-20
This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.
musical memories.......2006-03-14
I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

Viva Raul!!!!.......2007-02-15
Raul Julia ......the grand performer is the main reason to buy this CD ......i was never a fan of "Nine" but you can feel Raul, his magic in every song.....the songs might not stay with you forever , but Raul renditions will...Long live the great Raul Julia Arcelay..the Best of the Best!!!
9.......2006-09-23
"Nine" the brilliant Broadway musical directed by the brilliant Tommy Tune and starring the brilliant Raul Julia and with a brilliant scenic design of glaring white tile including the stage floor, and a brilliant costume design, except for the "Folies Bergere" number, every one was dressed in black, and a brilliant casting coup- 1 man surrounded by 21 women-and a couple of handfuls of brilliant musical numbers and by now you get the picture, the show was brilliant but it was its' brilliance that sabotaged the show and to boot the show was stubbornly not audience-friendly.
This led to moments of awe-inspiring highs surrounded by moments of boredom.
The first high comes about 15 minutes into the show by the entrance of flame-haired Anita Morris. Dressed head to toe in a lacy,skin-tight,see-through outfit that doesn't even try to hide her ample attributes-and she is making a phone call to her lover draped over a white tiled cube(bed) and she slithers, slides, stretches in positions not humanly possible, purring seductively to her boyfriend and having a real good time with herself in what is possibly the hottest and most erotic moment
I have ever witnessed on a Broadway stage and threatened to blister and melt the very tile she played on. Ironically the number was "A Call From the Vatican".
Another high moment came with Liliane Montevecchi as Guidos'(Julia) producer who bemoans the gloom of modern cinema and longs for the days of song, dance and color,,"Folies Bergere"
A pivotal moment in Guidos' life is when at the age of 9,he and a couple of his classmates visit a notorious whore who teaches the young boys how to "Be Italian" This incident so shames Guidos' mother she sends him away to a draconian Catholic school run by cruel nuns who happily beat the devil out of their students. This leads to the beautiful Gregorian Chant-like "The Bells of St Sebastian".
Guido begins his new film of Casanova "The Grand Canal" which is a 15 minute mini-opera.
I have to mention Karen Akers who plays Guidos' wife and I adore her voice which to me sounds like a mix of honey and melted caramels-just listen to her long ago section of "My Husband Makes Movies" and "Be On Your Own".
Raul Julia also has effective numbers "Guidos Song" "Only With You" and he sings the afore-mentioned spine-shivery "Bell of St Sebastian" and he duets with his 9-year old self on the finale "Nine" which ends the show on an effectivly quiet moment.
There are other fine moments to be found "Unusual Way" with Shelly Burch comes to mind.
This CD is a wonderful reminder of just how great a Broadway musical can be and although I enjoyed the entire show warts and all, I only wish the show had been more accessable to a wider audience so everyone could have witnessed the brilliance I had.
"Nine" is spectacular!.......2006-07-24
Based on Fellini's autobiographical film, "8 1\2", "Nine" opened in 1982 with a score by Maury Yeston and a book by Arthur Kopit. It starred Raul Julia, Karen Akers, Anita Morris, Liliane Montevecchi among others. Its direction was by Tommy Tune. All of these individuals (oh yes, Jonathan Tunick, the orchestrator) are responsible for this spectacular original cast album of the spectacular musical, "Nine.
Mr. Yeston has supplied as score that is filled with memorable songs that are tuneful and musically interesting. His lyrics are witty and original. Every song is outstanding. I must single out Ms. Akers' wonderful torch songs, "My Husband Makes Movies" and "Be On Your Own" as being the bests of the score. Ms. Akers performs them so well, which makes them even more enjoyable. I also cannot forget the exceptional "Folies Bergeres" sequence featuing Ms. Montevecchi in her element.
However, Mr. Julia and the other cast memembers give absolutely wonderful performances as well.
This is a nearly complete recording at something like 70 minutes. ("Nine" is not two and a half hours long for those of you who began to question the above statement.) As a bonus, it features Mr. Yeston performing some of his great songs.
...Their sound can last a hundred years..........2006-04-22
I have to admit that when I first listened to this CD I was not favorably impressed. None of the songs captured me instantly and many seemed rather jarring and confusing, particularly as I was not acquainted with the show and no synopis is included. I put it away only to recently pick it up with the guilty feeling that I had not given it any true consideration. This proved to be very true. After forcing myself to listen to it several times, I had to force myself to stop listening! There is something truly magical and mysterious about this show, a quality which sings through the stirring, passionate, indelibly European music and the moving, often bitingly clever and even provocative lyrics. Maury Yeston certainly knew what he was doing. He has created something which is very different from much of the broadway fare that came before it and was to follow it, something which is truly unique, but in such a subtle, elusive way that it is impossible to pinpoint wherein this individuality lies. This is certainly not one of the greatest musicals of all time. It is flawed; there is a disjointed quality to the songs some of which are decidely weaker than others. It is simply distintive.
This is must in great part be attributed to the performances. The cast of 'Nine' is superb and deserves to be remembered as it is. As Guido Contini, Raul Julia gives a performance which perfectly captures the internal struggles and outward charm of this character. While his singing does not match up to his acting,(his voice is rather grating, and occasionally he does things to the high notes that I would prefer not to discuss) he makes an admirable effort in each song and succeeds in most. He nails 'Guido's Song' in which the character's state of mind is so brilliantly outlined and has just the right bravado for 'The Grand Canal.'Nobody, even the worst singer in the world, could ruin the sweetly simple and utterly lovely 'Only With You', though I do not feel that he does justice to 'The Bells of St Sebastian' which is one of my favorite songs; I find the mix of styles and rythms incredably stirring.
It is the women who surround Julia who are responsible for the life and the fantasy that is so palpable on this recording. The women's overture is one of those inspired strokes of genius which serve to bring an entirely new sound to Broadway. As a whole they provide excellent support in 'The Grand Canal' and in the rollicking 'The Germans at the Spa' which is hysterical but also performs the task for which it was written, namely to create atmosphere, much better than many similar songs in other shows. Camille Saviola provides excellent vocals as mama Maddelena. As Yeston comments in the liner notes, hers is only one of many standout performances. This musical is wonderful in its ability to make stars of each of its soloists, each is brilliantly showcased in the respective song/s. Karen Akers(Luisa) may not have the strongest voice, but as another reviewer commented she has a worldly weariness which perfectly suits her character. Her two songs 'My Husband makes Movies'and 'Be on Your Own' are two of the most moving moments in 'Nine', the former raises so many questions about life and love while the latter is almost heartbreaking in its desparation..."go off and live your petty fictions full of blatant contradictions you can't see..." Anita Morris(Carla) does not have what could be described as an attractive voice, but she has just the right brash, steamy powerful belt for 'A Call from the Vatican'. Taina Elg(Guido's mother) and Shelly Burch(Claudia) both provide sweetly pretty renditions of 'Nine' and 'Unusual Way' respectively while Kathi Moss' voice soars in the wonderfully exciting 'Be Italian'. One of the weaker moments is the unconvincing 'Getting Tall'; Cameron Johann does not have the ability or is simply too young to save this song. But all this would still not be worthy of five stars, it is the true showstopper, the glorious 'Follies Bergeres', which catapults this show to the hights of my regard. Brilliantly concieved, it is brilliantly executed here by Julia and Stephanie Cotsirilos but particularly by the extraordinary Liliane Montevecchi. Never was there a performance which was more worthy of a Tony. She soars through this song both as an actress and a singer...and almost evokes Edith Piaf in some of those dizzying climaxes...I could go on raving for some time longer but this review has already become ridiculously long. The one true downside of this recording are Yeston's demo recordings of some of the songs which are quite simply ghastly. Talk about composers butchering their own material! In spite of this I heartily reccomend that any fan of musicals add this to their collection, would I really write such a long, pompous review if I didnt feel it was worth it?
Best Musical - 1982.......2005-06-29
The surprise winner of 1982's Best Musical Tony (beating the equally deserving "Dreamgirls) was "Nine", an intelligent production, with a beautiful score by Maury Yeston.
While arguments can be made about whether this original or the 2003 revival are better, I slightly prefer the revival, only because the orchestrations sound richer. The casts of both are terrific!
Best tracks include:
My Husband Makes Movies
A Call From The Vatican
Only With You
Folies Bergeres
The Bells Of St. Sebastian
Unusual Way
Simple
Be On Your Own
I Can't Make This Movie
Both versions are worthy purchases, but if you have to pick one, pick the revival (single disc, synopsis, lyrics).

Fiddler on the Roof is one of Broadway's great classics. Based on the tales of Sholem Aleichem, the musical tells the humorous and heartbreaking story of the milkman Tevye as he tries to maintain the simplicities of his traditional life even as his daughters grow up and Russia heads toward revolution. Many of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's songs have become touchstones of popular culture, including "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "Sunrise, Sunset." As Tevye, Zero Mostel leads--and at times dominates--the original 1964 Broadway cast, displaying irrepressible swagger and bluster. A young Julia Migenes plays his middle daughter, Hodel, while those who only know Bert Convy as a game-show host will be surprised by his pleasant voice as her suitor. The CD includes two previously unreleased songs but no lyrics. --David Horiuchi

The original first time way..........2007-05-09
I really love Topol in the role of Tevye, but he wasn't in the original broadway cast and Mr. Mostel created the role. Back then original cast albums were usually recorded on the Sunday after the opening. So this is really fresh stuff.
This is simply THE classic recording of a classic musical. I like the intimacy of the pit orchestra over the inflated version on the soundtrack (as soundtracks almost always are).
If I were a rich man, this is still the recording I would own.
Sure Miss Zero.......2007-01-08
What a great soundtrack and what a great play. Once you reacquaint yourself with it, you will be singing and humming the tunes for weeks and weeks....you just can't help it.
One Of A Kind.......2006-07-28
Fiddler On The Roof is one of the greatest of all musicals. A flawless book, remarkable score and wonderful performances.
Zero Mostel was one of those larger than life personalities the likes of whom we don't have anymore. Mostel, Merman, Channing, Bert Lahr...they didn't so much create a role as embody it with their personalities, but they were so huge, the result would be thrilling. Tevye was tailor made for Mostel, loud, comic and ultimately endearing. The kind of role he was a master at adapting himself too.
This recording captures all of that beautifully. The entire cast is wonderful. (Bea Arthur as Yente!!) Though some great actors replaced Mostel on Boadway, Herschel Bernardi, Harry Goz, most recently Alfred Molina, etc. and they created different and more realistic portrayals, it was Mostels signiture role and it's a gem.
A Timeless Classic.......2006-07-25
This musical is so very beautiful. The music is fantastic. Of course my favorite song is Sunrise, Sunset. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who is interested in musical theatre. You can play this CD over and over again for years to come and still enjoy it.
Great!!! .......2006-06-17
I would give this c.d. 4 and 3/4 stars if I could. Three reasons why it is not 5 is that it doesn't include "Tevye's Monologue", "Tevye's Rebuttal", and (My most favorite song out of the show) "Chavaleh." I could live without the first two but the c.d. just seems to be missing something without "Chavaleh." But otherwise I love this c.d.
P.S. Let us pray the rerelease this album with the missings songs.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2004-02-20
Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.
Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11
After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!
An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16
When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!
Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13
This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.
I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.
So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!
... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11
This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

Simply horrid.......2006-02-11
If you're any fan of Georgie Fame, avoid this at any cost. Yes, there are a lot of tracks, and yes, all the charting hits are here, but that's about all the nice thing I can say about it. Sound quality is all over the map, continuing Raven's propensity towards pulling the easiest-to-find master and using it instead of doing their homework. Things are mono that should be stereo, and things that should be mono are in abominable rechanneled (i.e. phony) stereo. Fame deserves better than this. Save your money and find a copy of "20 Beat Classics" plus any of the UK CBS collections still floating around.
The Most Comprehensive Fame Collection Available!.......2005-04-28
I had heard of Georgie Fame as a teenage Beatles fan back in the early 1980s, but hadn't heard him until a friend put Georgie's version of "Work Song" on a compilation disc for me almost 20 years later. The energy in that one recording made me feel as if I had in some small way experienced the fabled early 60s British R&B/Jazz scene that spawned The Yardbirds, the Rolling Stones, Alexis Korner, Georgie Fame, and others. After that, I acquired more Georgie Fame's 60s recordings, including the spectacular pop nugget "Yeh Yeh." This compilation provides a fantastic sampling of, arguably, Fame's most seminal recordings, and is worth the price of admission for the 2 tracks I mentioned earlier. This is 60s British R&B/Jazz-influenced pop at its finest. My only wish now is that someone will eventually have the good sense to reissue Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames' "Rhythm & Blues at the Flamingo" on CD.
True "Blue Eyed Soul" and Jazz, and R&B, and POP,.............2004-11-10
Georgie does it all! And it's all here! This is the most comprehensive collection of Georgie Fame's great music available today. This CD spans his years with EMI and CBS (Epic and Imperial in the states). All of the hits are here as well as some fantastic live jazz and R&B cuts. His horn section really stands out on this CD and are comparable to the best. His extensive use of baritone sax (an istrument that seems to have all but disappeared today) is remarkable in itself. It, along with the bass trombone adds balls to any horn section as evidenced on this cd. Georgie Fame only had 2 or 3 songs chart in the USA, but if any American jazz or R&B fans happen to read this review; do yourself a favour and get this cd. You'll love it! Jerry Grigsby
Great sixties mix of pop, blues and jazz.......2004-09-27
Georgie Fame's musical roots were in jazz and blues and that was what really interested him. Fortunately for him, there was room in the sixties pop charts for such musicians, especially if they were prepared to adapt their music to appeal to pop audiences. So it was that Georgie Fame topped the UK charts three times and several other hits. By some statistical freak, none of his hits made the top ten except for the three that made number one.
The three UK number ones were Yeh yeh (his first hit, though not his first single), Get away (which he originally wrote for a TV commercial) and The ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, which was about the film. These are the songs that Georgie is best remembered for but some of his other pop hits are also noteworthy, among them being Sunny, Sitting in the park, Because I love you, Peaceful and Rosetta, the last-named featuring Alan Price.
As the hits dried up, Georgie returned to the jazz and blues music that he loved but as this collection shows, that music was always an important influence in his pop hits. This is as good a collection of his music from his hit-making years as you are likely to find, containing all his UK hits and several other interesting tracks.

"Without the killer grooves and syncopated horn blasts of the always wonderful Skatalites, life on this planet would be a far duller thing." -- L.A. Daily News "The Skatalites are Jamaica's answer to the Motown house band and Booker T. & The MG's combined." -- Rolling Stone "The Skatalites took influences from jazz, calypso and US rhythm `n' blues to help create the sound that dominated Jamaican sixties music ... This is a must have album for anyone interested in Jamaican music and a great introduction for those who wish to learn." -- BBC.co.uk "More than a band, The Skatalites were and are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn't merely define the sound of Jamaica, they were the sound of Jamaica across the '50s and '60s." -- All Music Guide "The second wave of ska produced some good bands and some great music, the third wave fewer, but if you want to really hear the music played with respect for its deepest roots, you need to go to the source, and that is undoubtedly The Skatalites ... The band is more musically sophisticated than many of its contemporaries were and than pretty much all of its present day imitators are." -- PopMatters
Recorded in Byron Bay in 2006, On the Right Track mixes the coastal island vibes of Australia's and Jamaica's hippest towns with a heavy jazz influence. Among a myriad of reissues and compilations, this album stands out as having the best new original material on an international Skatalites release since 1964. Studio sessions were held in the style of a classic jazz session, much like the "one-take" upbringing Studio 1 provided the group in the early days. From the late '50s into the '60s, The Skatalites transcended popular music, introducing and defining Jamaican music and culture to the world. Combining the best of American boogie-woogie with R&B, jazz, and big band swing, The Skatalites created the up-tempo syncopated island beat dubbed "ska," which evolved into rocksteady and reggae. The original backing band for Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots & The Maytals, these two-time Grammy nominees have toured extensively worldwide since the '80s.

Something Great Gone Terribly Wrong.......2003-11-29
I LOVE the Reducers, I really do. And just about every necessary song you'd hope appears on this compilation. So what's the problem? Whoever mixed this CD did the Reducers a monumental injustice. The moment I put the CD in, I could tell that someone botched the job. The sound is muddy and the band's spirit doesn't shine through. I have tapes I recorded of this band off the radio on a crappy boom box that sound more vibrant! I have not heard the other Reducers CD's and any Reducers is better than none, but I believe I will be sticking with my vinyl LP's and hope that somehow this abomination is repaired. The band deserves it!
Let's Go!.......2003-11-02
This is it. Without the major label backing of the british bands of the era, and without the critical huzzah's of bands like the Shoes, the Scruffs, etc., these 4 guys from New London were simply one of the best rock and roll bands of the early eighties. Not really punk, more post-New Wave, they remind one of the great lost British bands that appeared on Stiff like Wreckless Eric and Tenpole Tudor (check the cover's album for those references.) What they were more than anything was one of the greatest bar bands of all time, that's where I saw them along with on my college campus. I saw them right when it seemed like they might break. They didn't which is where this comes in. At their worst, they're a fun guitar rock band from a time when that had been subsumed by synths, punk, post-punk whatever. At their best, especially on tunes like Better Homes and Gardens and the phenomenal Let's Go, they were sublime. Long live the Reducers.
They rock, pure and simple.......2003-05-05
Living in NYC, I got turned on to The Reducers in the mid-80s when WLIR used play the explosive "Let's Go." Screw Good Charlotte - "Let's Go" is a true anthem, right up there with "London Calling, Ghost Town, Radio Radio," and "What's So Funny `Bout Peace, Love and Understanding?" I recently convinced a friend to buy Redux; and when we put it on his stereo and cranked up the volume, he looked at me with widened eyes and said, "This rocks!" Thus has been the comment of anyone who has ever heard The Reducers. Indispensable for starting off mix tapes with a kick and a bang. And oh yeah, they were the first band to write an excellent pop-rock song called "Closing Time."

I remember the "Fistfight at the Beach" - it really happened.......2002-03-24
They are right - New London hardly ever does rock. The Reducers, however, do - in a big way.
