Ollabelle are a six-person, New York City-based band that celebrates rural American roots music, as well as the joys of group singing. What started as a side project became a bona fide group, named in honor of country singer and songwriter Ola Belle Reed. They mix traditional songs (including "Jesus on the Mainline," "Soul of a Man," and "John the Revelator") with originals, the latter sounding every bit as timeless as the former. Lead singer Amy Helm has had no shortage of exposure to honest music, her father being Levon Helm of the Band. The rest of the band includes singing instrumentalists with varied but nicely overlapping backgrounds. While a number of the songs wrap themselves in spare and acoustic simplicity, they also embrace the more urban bearing of unobtrusively electric blues and funky gospel. Singing over a pulsing rhythm section or an organ-based combo, Helm sounds strikingly (and surprisingly) like Julie Driscoll (later Tippett), who fronted Trinity with Brian Auger in the 1960s. This debut is post-Harry Smith, post-Alan Lomax music at its finest. --David Greenberger

With the musical maturity of this sophomore release, Ollabelle extend their accomplishment of forging a singular style bridging folk and art songs from the talents of five singer-songwriters. While Amy Helm, daughter of the Band's Levon, boasts the highest-profile lineage, the two-woman, three-man band has the balance of a democratic collective, combining deep roots with soaring, sophisticated harmonies. "Troubles of the World," an elegiac reading of the traditional "Riverside," the call-and-response of "Gone Today," and the closing "Last Lullaby" reflect the spiritual underpinnings of the quintet's signature sound, but the stylistic range extends from the Caribbean lilt of the opening "See Line Woman" and the stately country waltz of "Heaven's Pearls" to the delta blues of "Fall Back" and the Celtic balladry of "Dream the Fall." Except for the lovesick "Blue Northern Lights" and the bittersweet delicacy of "Everything Is Broken," it's difficult to distinguish the band's arrangements of traditional material from the original songwriting that dominates. Larry Campbell, formerly of Bob Dylan's band, provides superb production and multi-instrumental support. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Just plain good music.......2006-12-16

"Riverside Battle Songs" has something for everyone. Their music has a harmony and resonance similar to that of classic partnerships such as Simon and Garfunkel and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Their influences range from Celtic to Cajun to Country--and their topics are timely and timeless--as in the war protest of "Riverside Battle Songs." The first CD was a delight--this follow-up has only fulfilled the initial promise.

5 out of 5 stars Just Getting Better.......2006-10-21

Each year, only a handful of new records really resonate deeply with me. Two years ago, one of those was Ollabelle's debut release. I'm happy to say that "Riverside Battle Songs" has now become one of those rarified records for '06. Everything about this band has improved as they have spent more time together: their songwriting, their harmonies, and their singing. This time around, Tony and Byron step up to the mic, and it's a welcome appearance. And Glenn's singing has become much stronger (he was good before) - in fact, on the closer he bears some resemblance to veteran New Orleans singer John Boutte, with whom he had worked in the past. And Amy and Fiona continue to strike a beautiful balance between sweetness and soul. Overall, this is a record that will bear years of listening... and I look forward to those years!

5 out of 5 stars It took long to release, but it was worth the wait.......2006-09-20

I discoved this eclectic band in '04 with their first CD and deeply enjoyed it. I also caught a live show in Detroit and was very pleased to find that they are not just a result of studio magic (though the production only both CD's is to be complimented).

And now, their follow-up release is better than the first. They write good songs, but they are at their best re-working standards like Riverside. There is something very cool about a band that spans more genres than it has members. I'm already looking forward to #3.

5 out of 5 stars Ollabelle and their Harmonies.......2006-09-15

I just discovered this group on XM Radio's The Bob Edwards Show. Does anyone hear a resemblance to Crosby, Stills and Nash with respect to some of the harmonies? Initially I struggled to figure out what I was reminded of in Ollabelle's style. The formal review posted on Amazon gave me the answer: Delaney and Bonnie. I have a vinyl recording of Motel Shots with Delaney and Bonnie along with Leon Russell that makes me want to compare the two bands. This is a Two Thumbs Up album that I will purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Sophomore Release!!!!.......2006-08-23

Ollabelle has done it again. I truly enjoyed their first record because of its honesty and respect for the past but this record takes the band to a whole different level. Although very eclectic in nature, this quality works for, and not against the record as a whole. So many well crafted tunes on this one. Everything from the subtle anti-war protest sentiments of "Riverside" and "Dream the Fall" to the heartbroken "Blue Northern Lights and Northern Star" resonate with a beauty and restraint that is rare in modern record making. I can't recommend this one enough. Very happy that real music is still alive.

4 out of 5 stars Good News from a Good Band! .......2007-04-28

Gospel means, as the translation yearns for accuracy, The Good News (God Spell)! This music definitely conveys a positive message. The musicians are genuine, even though they do not hail from authentic places on the map that typically produce Americana/Blues/Gospel music. You say from...the East Village of Manhattan? I read somewhere that the band's beginning--or genesis, to remain in the proper vernacular--at Gospel nights jam session at a local church; for local NYC musicians following September the Eleventh. 2001.
I like the music because it sounds good; no great. But I love the music because of what it imparts--Tomorrow will be better than today, and yesterday wasn't all that bad because there was hope in today!

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Is it gospel or not?.......2006-09-19

There seems to be much debate in the other reviews as to how to classify this material. Some of the songs ARE gospel and some clearly are not. But really- WHO CARES? You can classify some songs as this or that but the entire CD shows a range of styles,
The misic is all well done and seems to be a descendant of the Band's music as Amy Helm is the daughter of Levon, the great Band singer and drummer. This is agreat debut rrom a band with a lot of potential.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but NOT gospel.......2006-06-02

If you are coming to this from Elvis Costello's Amazon Recommendation, a warning: This is very NICE stuff, very polite.

This is great for Americana fans(Alison Krauss). Very smooth and dirgey vocal interplay, but not classic raucous gospel.

The amount of copies available and low price should be an indication of let down of expectation.

If you are looking for a great modern gospel with a pop sensibility look no further than the Holmes Brother's Speaking In Tongues produced by Joan Osborne.

Then move onto the Blind Boys of Alabama's current albums.

For the true seeker look into the classic quartets: Swan Silvertones, Dixie Hummingbirds, Joe May, Blind boys of Mississippi with Archie Brownlee, Pilgrim Travellers.

5 out of 5 stars Best. Gospel. Ever........2005-12-26

I bought this on the strength of the powerful "Get Back Temptation," which I heard on Public Radio's "World Cafe" several months ago during my morning commute. There's a considerable range of styles on this album, from swamp-blues ("Get Back Temptation") to traditional Baptist church harmonies ("Two Steps") to smoky lounge jazz ("Elijah Rock," "No More My Lawd") to something approaching electronic punk ("John the Revalator"); yet it all fits together beautifully. This is some of the best Gospel music you will ever hear--Gospel music that kicks Satan's butt!

4 out of 5 stars sweet sounds.......2005-10-24

A fine offering from Olabelle. The NY based group enjoy themselves with a mixture of traditional and up to date music with a gospel/spiritual/roots foundation. If you lean towards this genre this album's for you.

On the sixth annual migration of the Great American H.O.R.D.E., and after what would prove to be the most successful in the tour's history, tour founders Blues Traveler decided to leave their baby stateside and embark instead on a three-week tour of Europe. Blues Traveler decided to pass the torch to one of last year's surprise guests, Neil Young. Despite his firm anti-taping policy at his lone appearance on the 1996 H.O.R.D.E., the veteran of the road softened his stance when approached by the tour organizers and ended up headlining all thirty dates. At the same time that veteran bands were departing the tour, many newer acts were finding themselves exposed to scores and scores of fans. What happens when you throw together five veteran musicians who played music ranging from punk to R & B to hard rock in bands with names like Human Sexual Response, The Lyres, The Zulus, the Savages, and Concussion Ensemble? Well, they form a country/rockabilly band in Massachusetts, of course, and call themselves the Country Bumpkins. The off-beat CD is patterned after a band appearance on MIT radio station WMBR's Pipeline show. It goes from small introductions in between songs to skits. the result is a very entertaining CD. The skits range in duration from the 27-second "Klutzy Comedy Corner With Lem 'n Clem" to nearly three minutes in the case of "Roy & Th' Reakin' Deacon," a preacher parody that introduces the song "Mercy Mercy Me. As humorous as the lyrics on this album are, the band takes its playing very seriously. The Bumpkins play a sparse '50's/'60's honky-tonk style that is a far cry from the music appearing on modern country radio. As the creative alias for singer-songwriter Dan Clark, the name Duke Daniels represents memories, dreams, ideas and perceptions. To the five musicians who perform and record as Duke Daniels, the title signifies a creative whole greater than its individual parts. And for listeners on the lookout for distinct sounds and songs, Duke Daniels is that rare musical find that simply doesn't sound like anything else out there. With Clarks baritone vocals accompanied by Geoffrey Moore on guitar, Larry Aberman on drums, Byron Thomas on keyboards and Nick Sample, the son of jazz bassist Joe Sample, on bass, Duke Daniels continues to build on their roots-oriented sound. Clark's voice is plaintive, closer to rock's swagger than the tonal curlings of a country folk, while his band is the definition of an L.A.-Nashville blend--slick enough to straddle styles but with enough roots to play it simple and acoustic.
