Dark Holler: Old Love Songs and Ballads
Dark Holler: Old Love Songs and Ballads
Editorial Reviews
New York Times, December 2, 2005
ââ¦the singers all stretch out, irregularly, on vowels of their choosing, and add upturned yips to the end of stanzas.â
Product Description
These milestone 1960s Folkways recordings of soul-searing Appalachian ballads brought new respect for the time-worn tradition of solo song. Their power to reach deep inside us with stories of love, betrayal, and tragedy dispels the notion that ballad singers are detached and unemotional. An extraordinary bonus DVD of John Cohen's classic film The End of an Old Song brings to life the earthy existence of balladeer Dillard Chandler of Madison County, North Carolina, featured on 14 of the 26 tracks reissued here for the first time. 36-page booklet, 26 tracks (including four unreleased performances)! 72 mins. of music!

Appalachian Qawwali Music.......2006-06-24
Listen to this, then listen to one of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's recordings. Like Ali Khan on recordings like "Qawwali: The Vocal Art of the Sufis", these Appalachian singers are also celebrating God and the mysteries of existence.
Zen calls it "Emptiness", or "the void", Dillard Chandler and his friends call it "Dark Holler."
And do they ever holler. These voices come from deep valleys of the shadow of the earth where they fear no evil.
Listen to the rod and the staff of a cappella. Immerse yourself in the wailings of whippoorwills as they circle the mouth of the void. And fear not the pit.
The sun riseth, and ye are baptised in sound.
