Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
The indefatigable folk trio of Peter, Paul & Mary is a wonderful focal point for younger listeners, toward whom this two-CD set is clearly geared. With a decidedly left-leaning approach to its craft--at least as far as the lyrics are concerned--the group selects great examples from its lengthy recording career. "If I Had a Hammer" veers from solemn consideration to exultant declaratives, working excellently enough that adults will certainly dig the music. Ditto for "Down by the Riverside" and "Light One Candle," which booms with an added mixed chorus, giving the song the power of a protest anthem. Not to paint this as an altogether-too-serious effort, though--"This Land Is Your Land" and "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" sweep the ears of kids up in deceptively minimal movements by the trio. Put succinctly, these two CDs mix kid-oriented and adult-oriented music with just the right touch. --Andrew Bartlett

Just old fashioned fun campfire songs.......2006-12-26
These are great sing-a-long songs for campfires or roadtrips
for any age. Some songs I've know forever and some I had never
heard of but enjoyed learning and now know by heart.
This is fun, fun stuff for all ages.
The songs you want your kids to know.......2006-12-14
I've seen far too many adults stick a DVD movie in the back seat of the van to keep the little ones entertained during a long trip. They'd be better served to load up PP&M's Around the Campfire. This music, delivered by people whose voices are associated with many of the songs, is quite likely to generate family sing-alongs in the old style. (Though I'll warn you that a three-year-old stuck on Puff the Magic Dragon ("Again!" she screeched) can be a special form of hell.)
Even if you didn't sing all the songs on this album when you went to summer camp -- I did, but my Camp Quidnunc days were only 100 miles from Greenwich Village where these songs first earned fame -- you are sure to know and enjoy at least 90% of them. They're a sort of aural comfort food, I find, even if there's no one under the age of 10 in the vicinity.
Peter Paul & Mary - a nostalgic experience.......2006-07-16
If you like(d) PP&M in the 60s, you'll love them now. A couple of songs I've never heard, but the majority is a collection of songs taken from their albums. A trip down memory lane, and just hearing songs like Blowin' In The Wind, This Land is Your Land, If I Had a Hammer and Down By The Riverside, to name a few on this 2 disc CD, brought me back to the days when we protested peacefully because it was our right; now I'm afraid to send in my dues to the ACLU because I might end up on a list somewhere. Pretty tragic.
Great Music But....................Not My Camp Songs!.......2006-07-09
First of all, let me start by stating that I LOVE Peter, Paul and Mary. I can still shed a tear when I listen to "Puff the Magic Dragon," probably one of my favorite songs. Their folk songs are unquestionably, classics. "Peter, Paul, and Mommy" is one of my very favorite albums. I played it for my students on my record player many years ago and then, when my daughter was in kindergarten, I lent it to her teacher; it was played every day during naptime.
I feel that I am somewhat of an authority when it comes to camp songs. Although I sing them badly, I have sung them for many, many decades. I attended Girl Scout camp during the sixties in both Alabama and New Mexico. I remember singing all the songs with my sister during the long ride home every year. I have also been to Church camp (didn't sing many campfire songs, much to my dismay) and I was a counselor at a camp in northeast Georgia for two summers during college in the seventies. In addition, I was a Girl Scout Leader for ten years during the next two decades. So, as you see, I am somewhat of an expert when it comes to singing around the campfire....anyone remember "Barges"?
So, it was with great anticipation that I ordered " Around the Campfire" (without looking at the sound track). I was planning on 'cranking up the radio' and singing along with the trio in my car! Unfortunately, the only songs on the first CD that we ever sang were: "If I Had A Hammer" and " Where Have All The Flowers Gone"--two of ten. I had better luck on the second CD; we sang: " Kumbaya", " Michael Row The Boat Ashore", "Puff (The Magic Dragon)", "500 Miles", and "Blowin in the Wind."
Only seven of the twenty songs were familiar to me from my camp days; if I had inspected this album before ordering, I would never have bought it. Even though I have 'buyer's remorse,' the singing is typical of Peter, Paul and Mary, just fabulous.
Good, not Great.......2005-08-23
This review is not original in context of some of the other reviews, but I thought it was important to emphasize that this recording contains much of their recent work, which is clearly not to the high standards of their ealier work. Reliant as they are on their voices, their aging has naturally effected the quality of their singing.
The musicianship is excellent as usual, but this is clearly not a 5-star album in light of their other recordings.

Album Description
Welcome to our third CD. On this recording you will find what we call 'Gaelic Bagpipe Music' ? not the refined playing of a modern pipe band, but our own version of these ancient, tribal sounds. WICKED TINKERS perform the kind of music you might have heard hundreds of years ago at a Scottish wedding, ceilidh, or around the campfire of a Highland raiding party. We blend the emotion and power of the Great Highland Bagpipe with the pounding of raw tribal rhythms and on this cd add the haunting tones of the 'Corn na hÉireann'- the Bronze Age Irish Horn - a sound lost for millennia. We play the music of the Scottish Highlands, spicing it with the Celtic tunes of Ireland and the many lands graced by the Gaelic people.

Something Wicked This Way Comes.............2007-04-10
The Wicked Tinkers put on the best shows ever!
The music is very hi quality, fun, and unashamedly uplifting!
The kind of music you think of when you want good time with great friends!
Just the thing you want to hear when you are feeling down or need that boost to get you thru the day.
And let the naysayers sit at home and nit pick about the singing all they want...songs like "I Will Go" will move you!
Especially if you are a serviceman or a serviceman's family member.
Keep on going guys!!!
2 wrecked eardrums.......2006-08-08
These guys are amazing. I got to see them at the local Highland Games in my area last month. They throw one hell of a live performace. I picked up two of their CDs at the games, and just recently purhased two others. This album is particularly intriguing, as it introduces the brass horn, along with the digderidoo... which make for a very interesting blend along with the pipes. I think sometimes the low bass of the didge muddles some of the other sounds, but I could care less... this albums is pretty high energy, with excellent piping, and relentless drums. Wiked Tinkers, and Loud have barely left my CD player since I bought them. My favorite tracks on this particular album are # 4,5,and 6..Gaelic Aire, 6/8 Marches, and I Will Go. I would disregard the disdain others have shown for the vocal tracks. They aren't that bad, and add some variety...and seem very earnest at heart. I see nothing wrong with that. If you like bagpipes, chances are you will like this...a strong 3rd release from these guys, check it out if you get the chance.
want to dance?.......2006-03-17
This CD makes a person who doesn't know how to dance WANT to learn. They are very energic and it is contagious!! "Whisky Supper" and "Wicked Tinkers" are also great CD"s. Saw them at White Horse Coffee & Tea Co. at Sutherlin, Oregon. They performed outside in heat over 100 degrees and it didn't slow them down a bit.
Eclectic and exciting.......2005-08-04
I agree- the Tinkers have a style all their own that is dynamic and exciting. I love that while the music is primitive it also has great technical elements. How does he play so fast?! This was my first Tinkers CD and I still like it best- in part /because/ of the vocals. It's a good contrast to occasionally have a context for the music and there are definitely much worse vocalists than Mr. Shaw out there. Yes, the CD's are not as great as a live performance. I concede that it's very difficult indeed to capture guys in kilts dancing on pub tables (while they're playing) on a CD. Because Tinkers have so much "personality" the CD isn't a perfect substitute, but it will at least sustain you until the band returns to your area.
Fun folk bagpipe and drum band!.......2004-10-23
Saw them live, bought the cd, and now I have hours of bagpipes blowing out my truck windows. The drums, various drones, and occasional vocals add to the variety. I love 'em!

FOUND should take John Land very far.......2003-06-27
John Land is a master at the guitar, and his singing and songwriting are compelling and flavorful. I love "finger style" songs such as "Joking, Drunk, or Bored as Hell" so much that I could listen to them over and over. Other songs on this CD that I love are: "The Faire", with it's nostalgic sweetness, "I Met A Lass" with it's imagery and humor, and "Blood and Sand" with it's hint of apocalypse. I feel sure this music will appeal to a wide demographic population.
FOUND should take John Land very far.......2003-06-27
John Land is a master at the guitar, and his singing and songwriting are compelling and flavorful. I love "finger style" songs such as "Joking, Drunk, or Bored as Hell" so much that I could listen to them over and over. John wrote the theme song for my local tv show, and I still enjoy hearing the song, though it's at the beginning of every show. I have seen that his music appeals to a wide demographic. John is also a warm, friendly person, with whom it has been my pleasure to associate on a number of occasions, for example when he opened for Al Stewart in Tampa on October 16, 2003. See JOHNLAND.COM for more info.
Wonderful, wonderful!.......2001-03-05
I love this CD. It lives in my car now for those long commutes. John's voice is very calming, even on the happier stuff ("I Met A Lass"), and it's very much like he is sitting in the passenger seat of my car singing just to me. You know? It's a very personal album and says a great deal about John and who he is. Even my 10-month-old daughter enjoys this album...she is always smiling in her carseat when I play it!
Clever lyrics, old world soul, and southing guitar..........2001-03-01
John Land's lyrics are really clever and his music is wonderfully soothing. Gets your toe tapping and is always delightful. The song Valentine is my particular favorite.
You're going to love this album!.......2001-02-27
This is such a warm, heartful album. I have given it to friends and family alike and they have loved it! It's a good mixture of folk, Celtic and rock styles. The lyrics are smart, clever, and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

My Toddler's Favorite.......2001-01-17
This cassette is my toddler's favorite! We have quite a selection of children's music, and he definitely prefers this one the most. He will listen contentedly through the entire tape(how's that for attention span!), and "requests" it every morning. Sharon, Lois, & Bram know how to appeal to the preschool crowd. The songs range from lively and humorous to soothing and lullaby-like. Our old cassette wore out, and we're ordering another--can't say I'd do that with many children's tapes, but this one is worth buying twice. Your toddler is sure to enjoy it!
