A lovely work notable for both its cohesiveness and its aural richness, Two Horizons likely stands as the most broadly appealing solo disc (now numbering five) yet released by Clannad vocalist Moya (aka Máire) Brennan, the oft-overshadowed elder sibling of Enya. Brennan uses a mythic tale involving a much-traveled harp (a totem for all things virtuous) as the disc's thematic center, yet it is the recording's composite sound--resonant, sumptuous, never quite overblown--that inspires repeated listenings. Brennan, who takes several turns on harp, explores a satisfying middle ground between mod and medieval, blending traditional Irish instrumentation with understated electronics and, on occasion, gently propulsive rhythms (akin to what you might hear from Dido), then adorning the whole with a gossamer New Age veil. The effect, as displayed in transitions throughout the disc (such as the shift from the dreamy "Is It Now" to the techno-spiced "Mothers of the Desert"), can be mesmerizing. Like morphing clouds in an expansive sky, the disc's 15 core tracks float by in an enchanting, atmospheric procession, with no jarring disruptions (other than a tacked-on club remix at the disc's conclusion) to break the spell. --Terry Wood

I think this is one of Moya (Maire) Brennan's best efforts. I liked or loved nearly every song (not true with many of her other cds). I also bought copies for my mother and a friend. This is truly soothing music yet the songs each have substance and a real individuality. If you're a fan of hers, you'll really love this cd.

There's quite a bit here that will appeal to fans of Maire's and Enya's works. Imagine a combination of Enya vocals with a little bit of Moya's previous folkier sound (as Maire), a healthy dose of heavily processed drumbeats, and add a touch of Loreena McKennit. That's a good approximation of Two Horizons.

The album is remarkably cohesive, especially given the musical involvement of over 25 of Moya's closest friends. Lush voices and pads provide consistent backing for Moya's Enya-esque vocals, as well as harp (played by Moya) and string solos with obvious Celtic influence. The very notable departure from the Enya stereotype is the percussion. A combination of world percussion and traditional rock beats, given a unique character through heavy processing, usually blend in quite well. There are a few counterexamples, such as Mothers of the Desert, in which the kick drum is a little too much. The River is probably the best, and most representative track - I advise sampling it if you're on the fence about getting this album.

Two Horizons doesn't have any really great tracks - however, none are really dissapointing (save the final "bonus" track, which is a dance remix - it does a pretty good job of ruining the album's vibe - I'm not sure if the current version of this album still has it, though). If you want a solid album that you can put on and not have to worry about skipping any tracks, this one could be for you. Of course, for Brennan-family fans, it's a must-have.

Platens (Latin word for Bringer of Light ) is a melodic rock project brainchild of Dario Grillo a young and talented singer, songwriter and musician born in Palermo, Italy. Dario has been the singer in the Italian Power Metal band Thy Majestie with whom he has recorded two albums (The Lasting Power and Hastings 1066) and one EP Echoes of War. This debut album features a melodic hard rock approach very close to the sound of such bands as Fair Warning, Terra Nova and Grand Illusion. Big bombastic hook lines, driving rhythms and magnificent keyboards tied together with incredible singing. The Good
Dario announces to the World "Here I Am" with driving rhythms and tuneful vocals. Keyboard effects and chugga-chugga riffing encompasses the intro to "Can Feel It". The verse section brings it down a bit, focusing on Dario's vocal delivery. Grillo shows that he's just as proficient on the slide guitar on the touching ballad "You Heart Will Claim His Truth", and picks up the pace with the same instrument on "Check It Out".

The slide work quickly turns into a revved up assault of guitars, synths, and effects. Be sure to listen for the Dream Theatre-esque guitar solos. "Angel's Cry" is an emotionally charged power ballad, with plenty of melodic twists and turns. To keep tugging at your heart stings, Grillo offers "The Last Kiss". You know you're in for a tear-jerker when a song starts with rain.

European audiences are probably familiar with Dario Grillo and his past endeavors, those in the U.S. are probably not. I would best sum up what to expect on Between Two Horizons as Bon Jovi (vocally) meets Queensryche (effects) meets Dream Theatre (instruments).

Moya does it again........2004-05-15

Moya as done it again. Smooth Celtic sound and calming effect to my weary heart at the end of a long day. Nothing soothes the anger and stress within me like Moya and her music.

Sensation of Listening In TWO HORIZONS.......2003-11-28

I first heard her voice when she was still in Clannad. As Enya's sister, her voice quality is not as good as Enya, but she writes better songs. In this album, unlike the Clannad's pop songs, this is much more new-age. In fact, still, she can't leave the pop - rock smell from Clannad's music. This cult can obviously be seen in songs like "Mothers of The Desert".

This album is made up of a story she writes herself. The story can be seen in the booklet. That's why the songs create itself as a whole and beautiful story. Compared to Enya's album, this album is richer than Enya's album. Though the songs may heard similar one to another, the instruments used varies better than instruments used in Enya's album. The beat is more variative. But alas, her vocal, which is arranged to be like a choir of angels, does not show the lead vocal. If I can compare it with a choir, it's like if the soprano voice is defeated by the other voice.

For me, this album has a little feel of new age, but more to a slow chill album. This album is good, generally. But my suggestion is to take a time out to listen this album particularly. That situation will create a better and deeper understanding of this outstanding album.
