One of the most striking debut albums ever released, this disc instantly established Chapman as a musical force, and with good reason. Immediacy, integrity of purpose, and unqualified artistry are apparent in nearly every song. And while "Fast Cars" remains Chapman's best-known work, "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" is that rarest breed: a song which is both topical and timeless. Any exploration into Chapman's work should begin with this at times stunning effort; it's a disc of remarkable uniformity and clarity that Chapman has yet to improve on. --Wayne Pernu

Customer Reviews:
Chapman's mellow voice.......2007-05-28
Chapman's mellow voice always has the ability to make me disappear somewhere else. My favorite track on the CD is Fast Car. The ballad about running away from life, and a drinking father with the one you love. The music is superb, and brilliant. Her soft voice, and mellow sound make you melt, and want to run away too.
The somber sound in her voice is uncaptured by almost anyone else. Her music is very important, stoic, and meaningful.
If you like laid back music with some feeling behind it- that you could lay in bed and listen to by candlelight- then this might be the CD for you.
The Chiding.......2007-05-25
'Fast car' was a remarkable single for it's time. We all talked ourselves into the rest of the filler on this cd, about which the best you can say is it's all extraordinarily average. If however art to you is didacticism, you will be in heaven. This has twee rhetorical questions ("Why are the missiles called Peacekeepers?"), exhausted imagery (I know somewhere in here a baby is crying) and worst of all an acapella sermon. All it lacks it some sort of "Save the bunnies" track. All of this gets filtered through Chapman's self-annointed "nobler than thou" suffering and humorless delivery, and of course that ridiculous all-purpose quaver. She doesn't exactly deliver a message subtly. This schtick had no future and noone bought her follow-up C.D.. But this garbage is still being pushed on us by "enlightened" radio stations, and I still hear the lesser songs from this cd all the time. It's a shame. I HATE these songs
To paraphrase the movie Bull Durham, "Aw, Tracy Chapman is as full of cr*p as anyone." You wouldn't know it from all of this unbearable condescension. I think her dream job would involve a cleric's collar and a pulpit.
Some liberals feel that music is just another place to be a drag. (And these remarks are coming from a massive liberal!) I don't subscribe to that hogwash. 10,000 maniacs, Midnight Oil and Tracy Chapman are the bottom of the barrell; a very humorless barrell.
This CD is a horrible, unrefined brow-beating.
The Something Greater Inside Than Fast Car.......2007-05-08
Fearless, forthright, emotional, committed, heartbreaking are all excellent words by others here used to describe this album. And while I like Fast Car which gets a lot of deserved attention. My main reason for reviewing this album is more than its songs but to also note the emotionally gripping tapestry in which they are arrayed. And I'd like to address the really impactful moment on this album; which is up there with the endlessly resonating chord struck at the end of the Beatle's A Day in the Life. It is Tracy's transition from the heartbreaking acapella in Behind the Walls which drops the listener into a hopeless moment of sadness followed by reverent silence only to be broken by the gentle guitar and lifting emotion of the words "Forgive Me" in Baby Can I Hold You. This maybe three to five seconds are one of the great album moments of all time far outstripping the number one hit. This singular moment in music history is the number one reason to experience this classic album. However you will be blessed and charmed with its abundant riches throughout.
Virtualy flawless work. Stunning first release........2007-03-17
A grand album, with extreme talent, great hooks, clear intent and purpose. Tracy Chapman's musical talent shines through on every track, from the rockin socially conscious "Talking about a revolution" to the reflective "Fast Car." It was hearing the track 'Fast Car' that motivated me to turn around, drive to the music store, & buy this disc, when it was first released on album and cassette tape.(way back when) I was blown away. Well, I found the tape in my basement, recently, and popped it in. (I still play tapes) I was reminded of what a rockin' talented musician and writer Tracy Chapman is. Buy it, you'll like it. Strong, positive, honest and pure music that jams. Goes well with fighting global warming, too. Thanks Tracy.
Mind-blowing album from a genius songwriter.......2007-02-18
Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut album is as confessional as it is striking. It's nothing innovative or new, you'll hear plenty of the songwriters of old, but you'll also hear a voice that with enough attention will captivate the listener.
This album made her a household album and quite simply exploded. She was a sensxation all on the basis of one song "Fast Car". But Tracy's music has just so much more depth than the commentarial lyrics of "Fast Car".
Firstly she is a superb guitarist, simple yet captivating, her style is nostalgic of Baez and Mitchell. Secondly her voice, fusing elements of Nina Simone, Joan Armatrading and Natalie Merchant, it entertains throughout.
This was on eof the albums that kickstarted the female rock movement of the early to mid 90's. Even though Chapman doesn't try anything new, she pulls off her deliberate simplicity well. This album is more upfront and with experimentation would lose some of its allure.
There are an array of stylistic songs on offer here evrything from the alt-country/melodic rock of "For My Lover" to the a'cappella "Behind The Wall". This is so much more than just a simple pop record.
Her subsequent albums have failed to mtach the hype of her initial fame (save "New Beginning"), this shows an artist who is as honest as they are humbling.

Promising collection of songs, but recording defective........2007-07-16
I purchased the CD based on the song selection and a previous listen to a copy belonging to someone else. The copy I received had the recording defect several other people have mentioned--constant, loud static over all of the music. I returned it and have not tried my luck again. It's a bummer because I like the music but the defect is too distracting and not unique to the disc I received.
DO NOT BUY THIS CD, it is defective.......2007-06-30
I ignored the other reviewers and bought this disk. Oops! They are right, there is a obvious buzz running through every song. I cannot believe that they still sell this. What a shame, I really wanted a collection from her!
Defective Recording.......2007-02-19
I am a big fan of Tracy Chapman and I bought "Collection" in Feb 2007 with great anticipation. However, from my experience and the reported feedback of at least one earlier purchaser, I strongly recommend thinking twice before buying this CD. We have each found a major recording defect in the CD. It immediately manifests itself as a loud, rapid and persistent stacatto tick superimposed over the music. Unfortunately, the record label has not yet effectively (as of 2/12/2007) recalled the inventory so new buyers at least through that date may get a defective CD like I just did. The good news is that the seller immediately authorized return of the defective product. As a fan of Tracy Chapman, I regret this has occurred. I am also disappointed in not having the CD.
Static thoughout the CD.......2007-02-04
I played the replacement CD and there it is still static throughout it. I am fustrated. I purchased it for a Christmas present. I gave it 1 star because that is the lowest star there is. If I could rate it zero stars, I would. Please, either make sure before sending the CD that it is not defective or send my money back.
Her music is truely an art form.......2007-01-20
If you are a person who is in to lyrics, if you have a special appreciation for music that is really about something, that really wants to say something, then don't hesitate to buy this cd. She talks about life in the words to her songs, that in my opinion rates up there with the likes of artists like Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, and James Taylor. The way she puts her songs together makes you see it or remember it as though she had painted it on canvas and you are visually observing what she is talking about.

"The Promise".......2007-07-27
My mom is a Tracy Chapman fan and I first listened to this cd of hers before I was about to leave for military boot camp ten years ago. My mom & I are very close and it was so very difficult to leave. "The Promise" spoke to me at that time in my life, it made me weep, and it still makes me cry every time I hear it. Great, great beautiful song.
Bland bordering on bad.......2007-05-05
For all that we may want to say about Tracy Chapman, I think it all boils down to the fact that she is one of the most overrated artists in recent memory. Her lyrics cry for a desire to be important and powerful and fall greatly short of such aspirations. The music which accompanies her bland and boring stories are even more bland and boring themself. This CD does more than just put me to sleep, it bores the life out of me. Not one song, besides perhaps "Give me on reason" will stick with you after listening to it. The songs on this cd are adult contemporary at its most basic and least important. Pass on this one
Smooth and upbeat....yet relaxing.......2007-02-02
Awesome....would love to have another CD with all the great songs as this one
The Promise.......2007-01-06
This song is so beautifully written and performed, and leaves such a profound effect on many people. I first heard The Promise while I was pregnant with my daughter, Sydney. She had problems and we knew at that point during my pregnancy that she wouldn't live long once she was born. I became so attached to this song- and then even more after she died in my arms. I felt that this was her song to me. It's been almost 3 years since she died, and I still cannot make it through the song without becoming very emotional. This song helped to get me through a dark time in my life and will always be my daughter, Sydney's song. I have listened to this song so much- I thought I would wear out the cd. It is beautiful and I am so grateful that it found me.
I love this album.......2006-12-24
I managed to get this CD from my sister and just listened to it
today. With most folk, blues albums it'll take me a couple of
listens to really like them, but this album was different.
Tracy's voice is powerful and on point. She also has a lot
to say and says it with feeling. I believe the folks who gave
a bad review because the whole album isn't like "Give Me One Reason"
did the album an injustice. These songs are still relevant today
and sound very good even 10 years later. That's saying a lot.

For Where You Live musician Tracy Chapman wanted to keep the production and performance aspect simple. According to Tracy, "this approach creates an opportunity for more emotion." The lady speaks the truth. Where You Live is straight-up raw and gets high marks for achieving that pared-down effect. "Talk to You" is nothing short of perfection--four minutes of sparse, sad soul music sung to a departing lover. The next cut "3,000 Miles" is about a different longing, a poetry-rich track that captures the desperation of isolation, alone in a city filled with violence, and a yearning to be in a safe space. By virtue of being a folk singer with deep convictions, Chapman has not been shy about tackling difficult topics. On this release, "America" is easily the most political, a dialogue on appropriation starting from Christopher Columbus to the present day. Surprisingly, the disc's first single, "Change" is one of the least gut-wrenching, so those who aren't fans of the song best not be put off by it. Incredibly, Where You Live marks Chapman's 20th anniversary as a recording artist. Along the way, songs such as "Fast Car," "Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution" and "Give Me One Reason" have demonstrated her amazing power. On Where You Live, her testament to musical simplicity is a good move, allowing this important singer/songwriter a chance to showcase beauty, fragility, and a magically incendiary spirit. --Denise Sheppard
Album Description
For nearly two decades, Tracy Chapman has been a truly individual voice on the modern musical landscape, charting and artistic path that owes nothing to trend and fashion, and everything to personal spirit, intelligence, and integrity. An eloquent teller of stories that are at once deeply intimate and yet speak to universal human concerns and a wider social conscience, Chapman has created a body of work that has been as consistently compelling as it is honest and uncompromising.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as others.......2007-01-26
I love Tracy Chapman, but was disappointed in this CD.
Not Where I Would Live.......2006-12-17
Before I write how disappointed I am with "Where You Live", I must preface that I think Miss Chapman is a rare find, a brilliant songwriter, possessing one of the keenest minds in music, as well as one of my favorite artists. However, I've found the latest album to be virtually unlistenable. I have tried to find positive aspects upon every listen, but never to any avail. Her voice is monotone, the production sounds cheap and hollow, and the mood is beyond dismal. Starting with the mediocre single, "Change", it is a steady downhill ride to the end. One of the most horrific pit stops along the way is the song, "America". The war drums combined with the John Cougar Mellencamp guitars attempt to acknowledge the forgotten Native Americans, but only results in a cacophony that makes their plight seem even worse today. Half the time I didn't even realize anything was playing because the songs were so boring, or I'd experience the other extreme when they awakened my senses violently, due to their brutal lack of melody. The one thing I think was thought out on the album was the cover art in black and white - "Where You Live", has no life blood running through it.
My intention is not to dissuade anyone from buying or listening to Miss Chapman's new album; instead only to voice my intense disappointment with someone I consider so talented's most recent work.
Great return.......2006-08-21
I love the song "America" and think it will be one of my all time favorites from Tracy Chapman
Tracy's return to form.......2006-06-06
When her eponymous debut appeared in the summer of '88, Tracy Chapman was compared by many to Joan Armatrading, the most immediate and likely comparison people could think of--Joan, like Tracy, had a deep, soulful voice that she used to great effect on some really fine original songs. Frankly, however, that's where the comparison really ended.
As a fan of both, I can say there are significant differences--both have warm voices, but Joan's is more suited to jazz and R&B ("Someone said she's too black/And someone else said she's not black enough for me"), whereas Tracy's voice is folkier and a bit more raw in places. Perhaps a fairer comparison would be between Tracy Chapman and the legendary (and still performing in 2006) Odetta, since Joan hasn't worked in the folk genre since her very first album, Whatever's For Us (1973). Furthermore, their choice of material is very different; Tracy sings many more social and political songs, whereas Joan sticks mainly to love and relationship themes (especially notable on her most recent studio album, 2003's Lovers Speak, which I highly recommend, by the way...but I digress).
That said, Where You Live is truly a return to form for Tracy. Tchad Blake produced this album and remained faithful to Tracy's vision of a more stripped-down album, much in the vein of her first two albums; after those, she became very uneven. I didn't care greatly for 1992's Matters of the Heart and thus strayed away, only really paying attention when individual tracks like "Give Me One Reason" and "You're the One" would receive airplay. Tracy at 42 is certainly no less bracing than Tracy at 24, but her material is more diverse in its subject matter and more pensive--"Change" and "3,000 Miles" are the strongest proof of this--and the sociopolitical songs are still confrontational but less in-your-face ("America," a fine song, and a fairly direct indictment of the Dubya administration). The closing track, "Be and Be Not Afraid," has a very Buddhist feel in its message, and the spiritual colouring in Tracy's music is very welcome. Here's hoping Tracy continues to release material like this; it's nice to have her still around after all this time.
talent doesn't dwindle.......2006-03-18
With an aged artist, expectations are frequently made only to disappoint, and considering Chapman's past success, they had to be high amongst her avid fans. With "Where You Live" Chapman meets these expectations only to surpass them. No disappointment here.

This is an excellent CD. I have all of Tracy Chapman's music on old tapes and now I have them in a digital format. This particular album's songs seem to focus on freedom from oppressive situation of various natures. Very inspirational and soul inspiring!
Tracy is a Genius.......2006-01-28
I have loved Tracy since she debuted Fast Car back in high school and I love her more and more as the years go by. She never stops making excellent music that inspires and touches the soul....this CD in particular is a real winner. I actually consider it a blessing that she is not on the radio where her music would become mundane and ordinary. Instead it's only by hearing about her through others that people have the privilege of listening to her wonderful music where you just can't get enough and it just makes you feel good. She's the best and there's no one else out there like her. That's a good thing!
Dam, she is Good!.......2005-05-05
oh Tracy, you bless my soul. I have all of her CDs and love them all. this one is an early one, and she gets even better, but, if you are a fan, you must have them ALL. buy it, love it, you will like her music, if not, something wrong with you! (kidding) it's good though, ok.
Great Cd~!.......2005-02-18
I am totally a new devotee to Tracy... Other than 'Fast Car' and 'Give me one good Reason', I had never heard any other music of hers. I have to agree with the last review and say that it is a darn shame that some of her other work has not been as noticed. Oh well....the ones of us who are willing to give good music a chance have some of the best music around to listen to with her. Crossroads is an awesome buy ~~Highly Recommended~~
Tape bin.......2004-10-29
Accepting this great album into my collection would have not been possible if I did not search through the $2.99 tape bin at the local record shop. As soon as I played the tape I was in love. I was moved by the first 5 hits and two days later I bought the CD. I think the greatest part of listening to a new song is the feeling as if you heard the songs a hundred times. This album made those feelings possible.
I advise people if they own Tracy "Trapmans" debut they must add "Crossroads" to their collection. I am not a musician but know great music when I hear it.

With Telling Stories, her first album since 1995's New Beginnings, Tracy Chapman returns to the spare, unsentimental feel of her early work. In doing so, she recaptures some of the urgency and simple melodiousness that made her debut a soulful folk-rock classic. There's maturity here, exemplified by recurring spiritual metaphors. On "Unsung Psalm" she imagines her funeral, singing, "I'd have a halo and flowing white robes / If I live right." "Wedding Song" offers the plainspoken, devotional line, "I reach out for your hand / For you I'd don a veil." The musical arrangements, too, are pared-down, with ghostly banjo, silvery fiddle, and guitar woven into subtle drum loops. Though not as immediately captivating as her debut, Telling Stories is a focused return to form for Chapman. --Lucy O'Brien
Customer Reviews:
Listening And Loving It! 4 1/2 Stars!.......2006-12-31
With such previous hits as "Fast Car" and "Give Me One Reason", Tracy Chapman not only introduced herself to us but made us fall in love with her in the process. Her vocals were unlike any other we had heard before, often vibrating or ululating at pivotal moments during any given song. Now, she tells us stories. About her life? Yes, but more importantly, about OURS. With heartfelt lyrics and melodies that gracefully cascade over us, Tracy Chapman uses "Telling Stories" to sing our life's histories - life, love and the lack thereof.
What I like most about Chapman, and subsequently "Telling Stories", is that she, along with her music, is 3-dimensional, often providing several messages within each song which allows the listener to pick and choose, so to speak. For example, on the first track for which the album is named, "Telling Stories", one is left wondering: Is she speaking to other artists who have lost their way, using "sad, sordid stories" to gain attention, believing that "a lie is the best thing" or is she speaking to herself? Or has she experienced the same thing that I have, a lover sweeping the truth under the rug only to be exposed at a later time? More often than not, listeners are left with a meaning to which they can relate.
Not many artists are able to pull off such a feat.
As well, not many established artists are able to capture the same essence that initially transformed listeners into devoted fans. Those same established artists often use methods (i.e., sampling other artists's songs) to keep their fans enthralled. Tracy Chapman does not do this, instead, providing her listeners with new material on each album. "Telling Stories" is no different. The woman that we came to know and grew to love as the political, social and spiritual being is the same woman heard on this album. And although Chapman is often overlooked due to the genre in which her music falls into, folk-rock, do not be lead astray by this, for you will be sorely disappointed.
Though this album is a bit short and most of her music sounds the same, the lyrics and the easy-listening melodies more than compensate for the areas in which she lacks. In fact, I will go as far as to say that the monotony of her music is what keeps me interested. From the first track, "Telling Stories", to the last track, "First Try", Chapman provides enough memorable hooks to reel you in and keep you humming along with her. Such hits include "Telling Stories"; "Devotion"; "Paper And Ink", a political and social tune that warns listeners of greed; and "Unsung Psalm", a "if I..." approach towards our eternal soul.
For those of you who are extreme Chapman fans, you will be highly pleased after listening to this album. For those of you who may be newcomers, you will soon find yourself a Chapman fan.
Great Delight! .......2006-02-04
As a long term fan of Tracey Chapman's wonderful voice and great talent, I always buy her albums, but to my great delight the CD "Telling Stories" has become a dearly loved "Best Collection" of Tracey's.
Best Tracy Album.......2005-08-26
This has to be the best album Tracy Chapman has ever released. I think she got over looked with this album. My favorite tracks are Devotion and Telling Stories. I really like the way she works the concept of the album. These stories let her fans get closer to her as an artist. Tracy Chapman is a true talent.
One of my FAVs.......2005-05-05
If my darling husband, Norman, and me start kissing right when I put this CD in the player, we'll be.. uh.. very happy.. and .. er.. um, busy, by the time "Wedding Song" comes on. we love this CD soooooooooooooo much, it's fabulous kissing music. needless to say, I LOVE this music! (or did I say that already?) this is one of Tracy's best CDs. sometimes I could cry it's so beautiful. sniff.... really, no kidding, you've got to buy this and listen well. Tracy is truly a talent not recognized in the pop music world. maybe because she is way better than just "pop". although some of her stuff is played on the radio - not much is, and that's a dam shame. it is good.
It's not bad...it's just boring........2004-09-01
I could find no other word to describe this album.
I love Tracy Chapman. I have most of her CDs. Her debut being her best album and one of the few albums I have from the 80's that still sounds fresh. And New Beginning was an amazing work with a blues touch that Tracy sounded comfortable with. And her newest release "Let it Rain" is definitely her most beautiful sounding album (in fact I'm listening to it now).
But this one is I guess anti-climatic (maybe because it was after the big success she had with "Give me one Reason"). I really didn't hear a standout track. Nothing really grabbed my attention as if saying, "Stop what you're doing! Your mind and ears are mine!" All of her albums are solid and full of talent but this album just seems so...ehh (sigh) compared to New Beginning and lackluster next to Let it Rain. If you're new to Tracy start with her Grammy winning debut "Tracy Chapman".

Tracy's best.......2007-07-12
This is by far my favorite release from Tracy Chapman. You should not hesitate to add this to your collection if you are a fan.
Another Great Recording.......2005-05-20
Enter Tracy's world of love, forgiveness and peace. Wonderfully crafted songs, which make one hopeful for a better world in the future for our children. She is truly one of the "kind hearts" amidst today's super hectic music business. She is a light in a dark world. She is a singer with a beautiful soul.
love that Tracy.......2005-05-05
Tracy - you go girl! love her! I have all of her CDs, 5 I think, and a couple singles. she is Great! bluesy and reminiscent of Nina Simone, perfect for doing housework to. my dear hubby, Norman, puts on a Tracy CD to get me in the mood - for housecleaning. oh, we've made love to Tracy too, plenty of times, but for doing dishes and folding laundry, she's a must. buy this one for Bang Bang Bang & Matters of the Heart. then buy all her other ones, you'll like them all.
THE CHAPMAN CD TO HAVE.......2002-01-12
If you are a Chapman fan, take the time to get and listen to this maserpiece that unfortunately did not get the acclaim it deserved. The work on this CD is touching and will give you the same critically social meanings that we have come to know and love in Tracy's work. Get this for your collection.
One of her best.......2001-12-22
Tracy Chapman is whitout doubt one of ours best songwriter and singer. The first time I played Tracy Chapman in my class, they all thought she was a man, because of her deep vocal but they liked her really much. This album takes you on a journey, to your soul you'll be touch by Bang bang bang, being cying over So, and being moved by I Used to be a sailor. While this album wasn't a big hit I was deep chocked over the way the media purchased this album. I still think this is one of her best albums to date.

With Let It Rain, Tracy Chapman has found an almost perfect platform for her potent voice. She and coproducer John Parish have opted for a muted approach where guitars and tambourines stir among simple, unadorned rhythms. The singer's once boldly strummed acoustic guitar is here replaced by a more constant tidal flow, with handclaps, gospel-tinged choruses, and an open-barreled bass drum marking time. Chapman even goes trip-hopping on "In the Dark," a strangely shadowy highpoint featuring her artfully quavering vocal melody. The jumpy interludes on "Hard Wired" and the chamber interlude of "Over in Love" (which is reminiscent of the gorgeous interstitial tunes on Hem's debut) add color. This is an awesomely crafted folk-soul creation for seasoned fans and for those who love Beth Orton and Norah Jones. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:
Quietly introspective.......2006-05-05
Probably not as good as her self-titled debut, Let It Rain is again quietly introspective with a blues feel and full of easygoing songs. The title track talks about going with the flow of everything the rain brings. Almost talks of dreams almost attained and she carries her disillusionment to Broken almost as if she is praying. Very beautiful and quiet.
Great CD!.......2005-05-20
Best tracks are "Let It Rain," "Another Sun,""You're the One,"
"Almost," and "Hard Wired." These are truly original tunes which transform a person to Tracy's world, and a very kind world it is.
Tracy is the bomb (and that means GOOD).......2005-05-05
Tracy and I went to school together, and I told her then to keep on singing. I'm very proud. buy this CD and you won't be sorry! and then buy all her other CDs. she is the modern Billy Holiday or Nina Simone - way way better than Natalie Cole. she is better than most anyone I can think of, in fact - yup, she's my favorite.
Use it for a coaster.......2004-11-05
I am a huge Tracy Chapman fan. Her self-titled CD & New Beginnings are 2 of my favorite CDs in my collection. I put this CD in and couldn't find a song I liked. I tried and tried to like the CD but I couldn't. Obviously, by the other reviews other people feel differently but this CD just didn't cut it for me. My advice... pick up any of her other CDs.
Beautiful Album!.......2004-09-01
A great album! While critics were hailing her previous album "Telling Stories" as her most mature work (they would be right if "mature" meant sedated and monotonous), I would say that this one takes her sound or voice to a higher level and therefore earns the title as her most mature work. I hope her next album, which should be out soon, sounds as good if not better than this.

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Excellent video...........2002-10-13
I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....
And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!
Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07
As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.
It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.
If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.
Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04
Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."
Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18
I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.
A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05
This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.
