Celtic fiddles, Irish reels, old-time banjo, gospel vocals, and Latin percussion forge a common spirit within the uncommonly vibrant fusion of the Duhks (pronounced "ducks"). The young band from Winnipeg casts a wide net over traditional influences, breathing fresh life into the age-old balladry of "The Wagoner's Lad," generating a dynamic tension between the soulful depth of Jessica Havey's vocals and Tania Elizabeth's fiddle on a pair of spiritual standards ("Death Came a-Knockin'" and "True Religion"), and keeping the dance floor jumping with their sprightly instrumental medleys. Though the Canadian quintet doesn't feature much original material, they extend their interpretive reach to contemporary songs as well, with the desperate edge of Ruth Ungar's "Four Blue Walls" providing a bracing change of mood, while the bittersweet rendition of Paul Brady's "You and I" (with the songwriter on harmony vocals) carries the musical interplay beyond the traditional realm. (Their attempt at fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" represents a rare misstep, lacking both the droll humor and the dark fatalism of the original.) Banjo iconoclast Béla Fleck coproduced the album, championing the Duhks as fellow trailblazers who use traditional elements to create a sound all their own. --Don McLeese

With each release, this Canadian quintet's adventurous, energetic eclecticism sounds more like a signature fusion (and less like bluegrass, despite Tania Elizabeth's fiddle and Leonard Podolak's banjo). The material on Migrations ranges all over the map--geographical as well as musical--with a pair of spirituals steeped in the tradition of Georgia's Sea Islands ("Moses, Don't Get Lost" and "Turtle Dove"), a zydeco romp through Cajun country ("Down to the River"), a ballad in tribute to an Irish patriot ("Who Will Take My Place?"), a syncopated revival of Tracy Chapman's "Mountains o' Things" and the ragtime blues of "Ol' Cook Pot." While a pair of instrumental medleys highlight the musicians' acoustic virtuosity, the soulful vocals of Jessee Havey and their ability to fashion songs from a variety of sources into such a cohesive whole distinguish the Duhks from folk acts, jam bands, or any other musical category. --Don McLeese

Amazing Bluegrass/Folk Band.......2007-03-30
The Duhks have a very unique blend of music. The would probably fall into the folk/bluegrass category. The rythms are amazing but my favorite part about the group is there multi-part harmonies. This has quickly become one of my favorite albums and I look forward to seeing them at some festivals this summer. If you like bluegrass music this is a must have!
A Broadened Expression of Great Style.......2007-01-21
This band has almost perfectly fused the styles of bluegrass with folk adding touches of traditional spirituals. I've had the fortune of seeing them twice in small venues in Nashville, and they are capable of producing this wonderful sound almost effortlessly. This is evidence of how truly super-talented this group is.
This album seems a less-inhibited expansion on the style we were exposed to on the previous album (produced by Alison Krauss). So much heart-felt soul seems to be poured into each song. I highly recommend this and either of their two other works.
Folk music from the heart.......2007-01-13
Don't expect any Nashville twangy voices, or a fire-burning Choctaw Breakdown. But if you enjoy folk music of any kind, these recordings will touch you deeply. If you've never listened to the Duhks, this album is one to try -- not just one song, but at least 4 or 5 to understand the wide range of style they have to offer. You'll find upbeat, downbeat, gospel, "northern" bluegrass, ballads, and more.
Better and Better All The Time.......2007-01-10
The Duhks were already wonderful, but they just keep getting better with each new release. This time they take a turn toward more pop, more accessible music and rely more heavily on Jessee Havey's wonderful husky voice. In the process though, they give up nothing Duhk-ish; none of their great technical skills; none of their innovative arrangements. This is probably my top pick for 2006. Buy it if you know what's good for your ears.
A sensory journey with joy, sorrow, inspiration, & even some humor.......2006-12-22
Playing Time - 39:38 -- The Duhks' progressive "neo-folk" or "cerebral folk" music is best described as highly-arranged folk and Americana that draws inspiration from various genres such as old time string band, Celtic, soul, gospel, folk, and zydeco. The band was nominated for the 2005 Emerging Artist of the Year Award by the Americana Music Association. "Migrations" has about 2/3 of the music that their self-titled 2005 album did, but you'll find that the 11 tracks and 16-page CD jacket don't leave us feeling short-changed. In fact, the project took home the 2006 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year in the Group category.
Hailing from Winnipeg, the quintet likes to invite a few guest artists into their mix; in this case, Tim O'Brien (5 tracks), Luke Bulla (1 track), and Katie Herzig (1 track). "Migrations" was produced by Gary Paczosa and Tim O'Brien who suggested songs, contributed additional lyrics, and even played or sang along in Tim's case. In keeping with their successful personalized sound, we hear well-crafted, creative songs with soul-stirring vocals and striking guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle and percussion. Low whistle and Uilleann pipes also appear in their kettle of sound. Three of the five Duhks provide vocals, both lead and harmonies. Whether covering Tracy Chapman's "Mountains O'Things" or serving up a Zydeco-flavored "Down to the River," they manage to find some novel material to infuse with their stamp. Tracy's song, of course, encourages us to "renounce all those material things" to save our souls. An instrumental medley of two originals with a Cape Breton tune illustrates how The Duhks blend tradition with their own individuality. Repertoire is also drawn from African-American spirituals (Turtle Dove, Moses Don't Get Lost) and Celtic-flared instrumentals (Three Fishers, The Fox And The Bee).
The band's affinity for reflective ballads with poignant lyrics capitalize on Havey's plaintive vocalizing (Heaven's My Home, Who Will Take My Place, Out of the Rain) to round out the set. "Heaven's My Home" provides a subtle vision for cautious optimism in a life full of trials, travails and adversity. "Who Will Take My Place?" was written by Dan Frechette about the Irish patriot Michael Collins but has more universal application for anyone fighting oppression. Penned by Jessee Havey, "Out of the Rain" provides sunny direction "far from the pain of being tied to your back door."
The Duhks' are Scott Senior (percussion), Jessee Havey (vocals), Leonard Podolak (banjo, fiddle), Tania Elizabeth (fiddle, mandolin), and Jordan McConnell (guitar, whistle, pipes). Creative artistry is built around an ability to free one's own muse. The Duhks' approach allows for personal expression without belittling the very traditions that they're stretching. This successful and impressive effort was done right and with abundant rewards. Before reinventing tradition, The Duhks have obviously lived and breathed the tradition itself by knowing, respecting, and appreciating the natural graces and flowing rhythms of Celtic and folk music. It's an amazing feat for these twenty-somethings. With this strong foundation, The Duhks then incorporate their own life experience to arrange and create a signature sound. The musicians' sensory journey takes us along with joy, sorrow, inspiration, and even occasional humor.
Whether serving up a beautiful, spiritual ballad or a rousing medley of reels, they manage to make each a part of greater Duhkville. With impressionistic and memorable material, this album continues presentation of The Duhks' earthy . Their music conveys an understanding of the bond between land and soul. Their compelling performance is one wrought with the emotional impact and virtuosity of soulful vocals, slapped skins, wailing fiddle, flowing guitar, and bouyant banjo. With a band vision to redefine both folk and pop music, The Duhks are well on their way to doing it with their acoustic tools of the trade. Thnks for not not relying on any electric instruments, synthesizers or drum machines. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

The success of the Winnipeg folk favorites' self-titled stateside debut has sparked the reissue of this 2002 Canadian indie release. Though the Duhks were a drummerless quartet in their initial incarnation (occasionally augmented in the studio by a rhythm section), they were from the start a band with ties to tradition, but unbound by it. The virtuosic range on display here is a freewheeling delight, with the propulsive instrumental dance medleys from a variety of sources and the soulful vocals of Jessica Havey on material that extends from the spiritual resonance of Gillian Welch's "Rock of Ages" to the jazzy inflections of "The Leather-Winged Bat." Much of the music spotlights the progressive interplay of banjoist Leonard Podolak and fiddler Tania Elizabeth. Though this was recorded not long after the Duhks came together, they already had a vision of where they were going. --Don McLeese

Daughters and Sons-The Duhks.......2007-05-07
I found this CD to be diversified, masterful, and enjoyable. The musicality is excellent, and the different numbers range from English-influenced folk to French Canadian music.
Duhks a l'orange.......2006-09-15
I first heard the Duhks at the Lyons Folks Festival in Colorado in 2003 and was completely bowled over by their incredible music. It seemed like everyone on the grounds was dancing and really getting into the music with energy that (most) other bands just don't generate. You won't go wrong with either of their first two records. (I've just ordered their third, Migrations.)
Take 30 seconds to listen to the clip from "The Leather Winged Bat" or the title track, "Your Daughters and Your Sons", and you'll get a taste. Better yet, listen to Jessica Havey's soulful voice (and lyrics) in "Annabel" or "The Bantry Girls Lament" to hear what so many of us are raving about to our friends.
I do think their self-titled second album is slightly better than their first (you just can't beat "Death Came a Knockin'", "Mists of Down Below", and "True Religion"), but both albums are can't miss.
(For a totally twisted take on the energy the Duhks are capable of cranking out, check out the album "Beautiful Dreamer-the Songs of Steven Foster". The Duhks do a take of "Camptown Races" that will blow you away. The Amazon 30 sec. clip doesn't do it justice, but you get a taste of what they're capable of belting out.)
Tania Elizabeth's unbelievable violin and Leonard Podolak's banjo are still another reason The Duhks' albums (and better yet, their live shows) shouldn't be missed.
Great Future for The Duhks.......2006-01-31
An excellent CD for anyone who loves good Blues, Celtic, Bluegrass, Country, or Rock. While non-electric in the same way as Union Station, they display more drive and funk with almost equal virtuosity on this their first CD. I give it 4 stars because their second CD is a 5.
Almost equal virtuosity, because they are in their professional infancy compared to the maturity and experience of Alison Kraus and her group, but their live performances are every bit as compelling, musically satisfying, entertaining, and quite a bit more exciting.
Their total command of their instruments and the aforementioned musical genres, make them a superb instrumental group. Add to that Jessica Havey's soulful, powerful vocals, combined with tight harmonies and a discriminating, knowledgeable selection of material, and you can hear why this group is building a large and loyal following.
The Duhks are a group worth watching closely. The improvement shown on their second CD over this already excellent one is incrementally equivalent to how much better they are live than on their second CD. You will want both, and their forthcoming third CD should bring them the mass appeal that will require large venues for their energetic concerts.
Do yourself a favor--catch them live while they are still appearing in more intimate settings, buy this CD and their self-titled second one, strap yourself in and prepare for a great ride as a new Duhks fan who got in on the first or second floor. Those of us who caught them on the ground floor are the really lucky ones.

Their albums and live performances are a lively, musical treat. Winner of a Juno and nominated for a Grammy. Go Duhks!
Listening to the Duhks is like reaching Nirvana!.......2006-12-16
The Duhks is a group of young twenty-something musicians all with amazing talent. They are in a genre of their own, mixing bluegrass, gospel and blues together to make a sound that has never been heard before. Jessee Havey, lead vocals, sings gospel like no one I've ever heard. Her voice makes you want to cry, it's full with so much emotion and strength. Tania Elizabeth, fiddle, is classicly trained and her talent is over the top amazing. Tania's voice also blends beautifuly with Jessee's. If you have ever seen The Duhks live, you know that the banjo player Leonard Podolak is quite a character. His wonderful personality comes through his playing especially on the instrumentals. Leonard sings lead on "Everybody Knows," which is one of my favorites and Leonard is probably the reason for that. Jordan McConnell, guitar, makes his own instruments and you can really tell. He knows how to play that guitar like it was made for him. The music he makes is honest and beautiful. Last but not even close to least is Scott "Senor" Senior, drums and percussion. Scott plays drums that he makes. they are wooden boxes that provide a full, earthy sound that compliments the other musicains perfectly.
Other than all of the musicians being incredibly talented, they also work perfectly together. The problem with many young bands these days is the competition between members. You never sense that with The Duhks and if you see them live you know there is no competition at all. They often face eachother and play off eachother. What they do together is truelly magical.
This CD is one of my favorites in my collection. When I got this album two summers ago, it was on repeat for all of the season. I have been fortunate enough to have seen them live twice. They are five of the sweetest people. Their shows are intimate and lively. Afterwards they mingle with the audience and surprise everyone with their down to earth attitude.
Another wonderful thing about The Duhks sound is it can reach all age groups. I'm a young adult and I adore them just as much as my parents who are the ones who introduced me to them. At the concerts I've gone to, there have been people of all ages, from five years old to seventy years old and they all have the best time of their lives.
Buy this CD, you will not regret it!
One of the best albums I've bought lately.......2006-11-14
This is one of the best albums I've bought lately. The Duhks have a unique sound that I want more of. Great vocals, excellent harmonies, and fantastic instrumentals.
Great CD.......2006-11-10
Love these guys, have to explain to all that it's pronounced "ducks" not "dukes". Bought this one and Migrations at the same time and they are both great.
Interesting band, great CD.......2006-08-16
A good example of one of those bands that defy easy categorization. If you like celtic and bluegrass, and maybe a little bit of gospel, blues, country, folk, and pop, this band is worth a listen.

NEW FAVORITE BAND.......2005-11-30
I was lucky enough to see this fantastic new band at Magfest in Fl in Oct 2005. The skill of these young musicians is almost beyond belief. Tania is probably the greastest fiddle player in the world. Just to watch the look of intense concentration as she plays some of what I believe to be very difficult music is worth the price of admission. But then there is Jessie, OH Jessie what a voice & wonderful delivery. The smile alone is worth buying 100 cds. This dosn't mean that the other members are not as good; they are. It just so difficult to take your eyes off of Tania & Jessie.
Then there is the music--------------WOW, buy both cds & pray for a dvd soon.
Go to see them in person. You will be happy you did
A must buy!.......2005-07-14
I saw The Duhks performing in Idaho, June 2005. Our town is small but the place was PACKED and people of all ages were having a great time. I couldn't stop dancing, it's such great music! It's an origional sound and the musicians obviously have fun with what they do. I bought both albums before the concert was even halfway done, don't regret it one bit!
Super up and coming group.......2004-11-03
Saw The Duhks at Rhythm & Roots Festival in RI Labor Day weekend 2004...did not fall in love til I returned home with a free CD they gave me...I am now in love!!!...Jessee has threatened to give us comp tix at Northampton, MA on 7 Jan. 2005...driving 6 hours from ME will be worth every mile!...mailing my copy of CD to Lilli in Beijing, China so she can hear...we shall name our daughter "Annabel"...MaineJack
Your Daughters and Your Sons.......2003-10-23
This is an excellent album. This is a very talented group of young performers, although the album stands up regardless of the performers'ages. Catch these kids in concert, if you get the chance.
Terrific Irish and Traditional Folk Music.......2003-10-16
Saw the Duhks, a Canadian group, at an outdoor festival in South Carolina in September, 2003. The band consists of claw-hammer banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass, and bongos (of all things). They play clean, fast, intricate Irish and traditional folk music. I bought this album before I went home.
About half the cuts are songs; the other half are instrumentals. Their young fiddle player, Tania Elizabeth, is the best I've ever heard. The vocals are also fine, as are the lyrics. You'll be smiling and tapping your feet.

Product Description
As the creative alias for singer-songwriter Dan Clark, the name Duke Daniels represents memories, dreams, ideas and perceptions. To the five musicians who perform and record as Duke Daniels, the title signifies a creative whole greater than its individual parts. And for listeners on the lookout for distinct sounds and songs, Duke Daniels is that rare musical find that simply doesn't sound like anything else out there. With Clarks baritone vocals accompanied by Geoffrey Moore on guitar, Larry Aberman on drums, Byron Thomas on keyboards and Nick Sample, the son of jazz bassist Joe Sample, on bass, Duke Daniels continues to build on their roots-oriented sound. Clark's voice is plaintive, closer to rock's swagger than the tonal curlings of a country folk, while his band is the definition of an L.A.-Nashville blend--slick enough to straddle styles but with enough roots to play it simple and acoustic.
