Though written in the early 1950s and never previously recorded, Woody Guthrie's "Peace Call" provides a timely conclusion to this collection of politically pointed material. Trading verses with Texas troubadour Eliza Gilkyson on the pacifist anthem are kindred spirits Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Iris DeMent. Much of the rest of the album finds Gilkyson applying her vocal warmth and buoyant melodies to lyrics that probe the darker recesses of the human condition, from the terrorism evoked within the luminous "Tender Mercies" (with Gilkyson's son and daughter joining in harmony) to the revenge by a lifelong abuse victim in "Ballad of Yvonne Johnson" to the Shaker-style hymn of mankind's folly, "Milk and Honey." While Gilkyson brings a light touch to the album's weighty social concerns, the pop buoyancy of "Wonderland" and the rock & roller's ballad "Dark Side of Town" (with its Band-like horn arrangement) extend the album's range beyond topical broadsides. --Don McLeese

Product Description
An important new release with infectious and thought-provoking tracks and guest vocal appearances by PATTI GRIFFIN, MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER, IRIS DEMENT and SLAID CLEAVES!

"Land of Milk and Honey" is a collection of songs that are decidedly socio/political in nature. From the wake-up call to awareness of the current agenda of the "neo-cons" in "Hiway 9" to the "bugle call of peace" in Woody Guthrie's previously unrecorded and timely anti-war song "Peace Call", Eliza Gilkyson spares no punches. This is music for a generation that does not want to stand idly by while losing their dream for a quality of life they hold dear.

Gilkyson once again uses a sparse, edgy organic production, with her longtime teammates, producer Mark Hallman and a cast of some of the best players Austin has to offer, to convey her firm convictions and insight into today's world. Cameos include an enthusiastic Slaid Cleaves on "Hiway 9", and Jon Dee Graham and Stephen Bruton on the soulful "Dark Side of Town", an ode to their old friend and head of Eliza's production company, Al Ragle.

Especially touching is the mother's prayer, "Tender Mercies", with background harmonies by Eliza's son Cisco and daughter Delia. Gilkyson's lush and passionate voice wraps itself around the major themes of her generation, with topics ranging from the anti war movement, abusive relationships ("Ballad of Yvonne Johnson"), personal relationships ("Separated"), and coming to terms with the folly of man ("Milk and Honey"). There is even an old song written by her late father, folksinger Terry Gilkyson, that addresses the "great food chain of life" as Eliza puts it. But through all these weighty topics, Eliza never loses sight of her sense of wonder ("Wonderland") and her hopes for humanity.

The closing song, Guthrie's "Peace Call", was discovered in an old out-of-print songbook from the Guthrie archives while Eliza was on the road with the Woody Guthrie tribute tour last summer. Rendered by a team of like-minded songstresses Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Iris Dement, the song shows a solidarity of intention that truly conveys Guthrie's message of peace in times of war.

1 out of 5 stars Still a dippy hippy.......2007-05-27

From her early Lisa Gilkyson goofiness on being a "rainbow warrior" to her pacifist dopiness, a lovely voice is wasted. The melodies are sweet, and nice to the ear. Too bad she never grew up intellectually or morally.

5 out of 5 stars Land of Milk and Honey delivers.......2007-04-11

Eliza Gilkyson has become one of my favorite artists. Lyrically she is thoughtful and thorough. She edits until it is right. She has a creative gift for melody and song construction, and her voice is true and expressive.

That said, this release does use the human condition and social commentary as a recurring theme, and this makes it my favorite CD of hers. She has something to say, and she says it here - beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry.......2007-03-20

OK. Let's say it and be done with it: Much of Eliza Glkyson's "Land of Milk and Honey" is political. Personally, I don't have any problem with that. Besides, you can say things in verse that, perhaps, you cannot say otherwise. If someone has a problem with it, listen to "Highway 9", "Tender Mercies," and especially "Milk and Honey" for the poetry or the "other" point of view. Also note that "Peace Call" was written by Woodie Guthrie. Eliza Gilkyson is a folk singer. Folk singers sing about their times; they always have. With that in mind, listen to "Ballad of Yvonne Johnson"--Better yet, read the words while listening to the lyrics. Wow. There are golden nuggets spread throughout this CD, like "Not Lonely." It is appropriate to always listen to Eliza Gilkyson with the lyrics open in front of you. The words will touch you. The words may get under your skin. The words from "Land of Milk and Honey" may burn you. If they do, the poet has done her job.

1 out of 5 stars Upper-class airhead in new career move: racist politics........2006-10-24

The cover of the CD, which provided the inspiration for the album title and song according to the liner notes, shows an industrial wasteland created by communists in the former Soviet empire. The back cover shows a defaced billboard which mocks the United States of America and its position in the world. The contradiction provided by the juxtaposition of these images is lost on Gilkyson and shows the level of sophistication one might expect from someone with only a high school education like her. The opening song, "Hiway 9," uses the melody and tempo of a children's song to support a frivolous political commentary. This includes the racist attack that, Colin Powell, one of this country's greatest public servants, is "a white man hidden in a black man's skin." Charming, especially considering that Gilkyson's family comes from the Philadelphia Social Register. Things don't get much better from there with the usual puerile lyrics (Not Lonely, Wonderland, Separated) about longing for love and lust, which are getting a little odd coming from a 50 year old woman who has had more than her share of lovers. The third cut, "Dark Side of Town," is about one of her sister's innumerable boyfriends, a substance abuser who died recently of compications from Hep C. The album is dedicated to him at end of the liner notes. Great, that's inspiring to us all Eliza! The song Tender Mercies starts off with words of sympathy for a suicide bomber who kills Jews at an Israeli shopping mall. Once again, the deeper meaning of such an act is lost to Eliza. Elsewhere, the "Milk and Honey" track manages to be pompous and trite at the same time while attempting profundity, and a children's song from her father is included. The closing Woody Guthrie tune is far and away the best thing on the album. It harks back to a time when those on the political left and right in this country could unite to fight Woody's favorite enemy: facists. Too bad Gilkyson and her ilk don't even recognize the problem today, just like the isolationists in the 30s. As she says in "Milk and Honey" - "god's children....doomed to repeat history."

5 out of 5 stars Social depth, maturity..........2006-09-08

I especially appreciate the social depth to Eliza's latest music. She started thinking and asking questions long before many of us. In one week she is playing in a historic barn in rural Minnesota - I'll be there, full of gratitude and respect. Maybe if we lstened to more music like Tender Mercies, the world would be a more tender place. Paradise Hotel is an excellent follow-up. And a plug for a related and excellent undiscovered single...Say Goodbye to That...Leslie Nuchow.
