By 1958 "Tom Dooley" was already in circulation in the growing folk movement, but it was the Kingston Trio's hit that ignited the boom. These three clean-cut Hawaii residents may not have looked like accomplished musicians, but they were. David Guard first learned the open-G Hawaiian guitar and took up the banjo after a Weaver's concert; lead singer Bob Shane was much influenced by Harry Belefonte, and he sang with studied clarity; and Nick Reynolds contributed steady, old-timey guitar and signature harmony. Most of what the neophyte needs is here: "Tom Dooley," "Greenback Dollar," and the Carter Family tune, "Worried Man." --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD from Kingston Trio.......2007-07-03

I loved the record for many years, and I still have it. Wonderful folk music. I'm surprised the record still plays. Folk music was very popular in the early sixties and the Trio was at the top of their game. It's easy, entertaining, toe-tapping music, the kind you can sing along with. There's not much of that kind anymore.

This CD has all 12 of the original songs.

5 out of 5 stars Post Beatnik, Pre-Beatles.........2007-06-01

If you weren't around for the folk singing 'boom' of the late 50s-early 60s, this is one of the more accessible (commercial) groups of the era. (And if you remember what Charlie's wife handed him through that open window, you're already a fan.)

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Trio.......2007-05-16

From 1958-1963, the Kingston Trio had ten charted hits in the Top 40. Nine of the ten are on this CD ("Desert Pete" is missing), along with "Everglades," "Scotch and Soda" (a personal favorite), and "Reuben James." If you remember the Kingston Trio at all, you should own this CD. Their combination of folk music, social awareness, and comedy is magnificent!!

5 out of 5 stars KT greatest hits.......2007-03-16

Can't miss with this one, though I wish it were adouble album because there are so many goo fTrio songs.

2 out of 5 stars Kingston Trio.......2007-03-09

Listening to this cd took me back to my growing-up years. I remembered all their songs I loved back then. It's a great homecoming.

        Album Description

Almost every major rock artist can trace his or her roots to the harmonious sounds of the Kingston Trio. Who would ever guess that three Menio College students - John Stewart, Bob Shane, and Nick Reynolds - would not only change the musical world, but also produce 21 top-10 LPs and sell six million copies of the hit single Tom Dooley? Since their 1957 debut in the smoke-filled coffeehouses of San Francisco, the Kingston Trio have entertained audiences worldwide. THE KINGSTON TRIO'S GREATEST HITS LIVE showcases the remarkable talent of one of the world's most beloved groups with original recordings, live performances, and re-recordings of 10 of their greatest hits, including M.T.A., Greenback Dollar, and Tom Dooley, making this album a classic addition to any music collection.
