Before Joan Baez, the closest thing to a white female folksinger was Jo Stafford. Baez made her professional debut in 1959 at the Newport Folk Festival and started recording for Vanguard the next year. Her early association with Bob Dylan and performances of his songs did him no harm. The material in this CD comes from later in her career, when she had left Vanguard for A&M. Listeners who enjoy this CD will probably want to hear her earlier work. She is among the classic American voices. --Stanley Booth

I REALLY ENJOY THIS CD. THERE ARE A FEW SONGS I SKIP THROUGH SOMETIMES, BUT IF YOU LIKE HER VOICE THEN YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

I have long loved Joan Baez's voice and the music she contributed to the '60s and '70s. However, this CD was a major disappointment to me. I expected a Greatest Hits CD to be complete and include high quality recordings. This CD offered neither.

This is a wonderful CD...I saw her when she was still a student on the stage at Dartmouth College and have followed her all these years and never tire of her singing.

Not so original........2007-05-24

This is the first Joan Baez cd I have listened to and I have say that it's okay. She seemed to be remaking fabulous songs like Eleanor Rigby, and Let it be. I'm sorry. It just doesn't sound the same. I hope that her other CDs are more original.

Very good but............2004-02-21

This is a very good album but the previous reviewer mentions songs that are not on this CD like Diamonds And Rust and John Lennon's Imagine.

Moving into pop and rock.......2000-06-28

This was my first Joan Baez album and I still love it. Dating from 1973, it's more pop than folk, with a varied selection of material including Lennon/McCartney and Kris Kristofferson covers. Besides her greatest hit, the lilting song The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down from 1971, my personal favourites include the wistful There But For Fortune, the poetic Brand New Tennessee Waltz ("Well I left Tennessee in a hurry dear/The same way that I'm leaving you/But love is mainly just memories/And everyone's got him a few/When I'm gone I'll be glad to love you") and the bittersweet Love Is Just A Four Letter Word. Help Me Make It Through The Night, Eleanor Rigby, Let It Be and Dangling Conversation are well interpreted and enjoyable. Folk purists and fans of her early work might not appreciate it, but I enjoy all her different styles and directions. Every one of these songs is appealing and very well done.
