Unbelievable songs, back-up singers, overall production.......2003-02-04
What you have here are great beats, a duo of extremely sexy sounding, smooth female back-up singers who can almost make think they are both dancing with you inside your body/soul, as well as wonderfully played blaring, glaring synthesizer/horn leads and riffs, and great funk guitar displays. All this blends into a marvelous pastiche of sound and meaning that rocks your socks and all your loosened body parts. You're really going to love this album, especially if you're already somewhat used to the sound of Zouk.
Francky's singing and toasting is exemplary, sometimes exceedingly happy and flamboyant ("Positif"), at times liltingly intense ("Jalousie Tropicale"), at certain junctures so darkly passionate you'd think he was a male version of Donna Summer. He isn't afraid of keeping an entire song in the minor mode, and driving himself and his listeners into a near frenzy in the process. There's a bit of subtle macho posturing apparent in much of his vocalizing, but he executes it all very, very smoothly. He outdoes Prince at being Prince, and in French, yet.
Mr. Vincent wrote all the music and lyrics for cuts 2-6 and 8; he co-wrote #1, and adapted #7.
Check out the original title cut "Positif" [4 stars], during which one of the sultry backup singers intones "*Francky . . . je t'aime!" [in English: "Frankie, I love you!"] over and over, each time inflected differently and with greater passion. The faint of heart had better have their cardiologist in attendance when auditioning this one. This was his international hit, and contains only rapping, no singing. There's very little MC'ing on the remainder of the cuts, but many of the melodies derive their quick-hitting, syncopated rhythms from high stakes hip-hop toastmastering.
Then there are a few of the songs where he's putting a goof on, and does it ever come off well!
All in all, this is very slick writing, performing, and production. Yet there's nothing shallow about it because of the intensity he brings to each moment, and to each type of emotional expression represented. Ditto for his fun loving and/or intensely revealing/reveling back-up singers. Listen to how his and their hearts seem to beat as one. The guy's just not to be outdone, which may mean that there are some people who will dislike it - because he and his singers/musicians are so unbridled - the music will fly right in the face of their inhibitions.
Below are comments on the other individual songs. My ratings are based mostly on sound and feel, as the printed lyrics aren't included in the CD package (I don't possess the knowledge or skill to translate a dialect of Creole French on the fly). The song titles are my loose translations into English.
#2: "Tropical Jealousy": A medium tempo song with stirring intro and choruses from the back-up singers. All in all a light touch, with great brass, rhythmic keyboards (Yamaha DX7), etc. [5 stars]
#3: "Porno Video": I guess I'm almost glad I don't 'hear' French all that well, considering the title (Amazon.com's listing got a couple of letters switched on the first word). This one's fast with a kind of fun-loving, funkified reggae-soca feel, though of course with the trademark zouk beat. It possesses terrific melodies, harmonies and counter-melodies. The brass riffs are beautiful and stirring. The form is quite complex, with many sections evolving one out of the other. A light, coquettish touch rules, but full-bodied passion seethes just beneath the surface. [5 stars]
#4: "Long Live Her Buttocks": Kind of a quick hitting, 'jokey', frolicsome song. As on much of the album, there's great digital delay on the duo of back-up singers, panned hard right and hard left. [3½ stars]
#5: "Play of the Five [fingers?]" One of the better songs I have ever heard, especially of the erotic type. Melodically superb and harmonically enticing, the song moves in and out of the major and minor modes, and all points in between, drenched with emotion and darkly lit sexual passion. Here Francky gives a sonic lesson in male sexual staying power - if his breath sounds don't ignite you - I'd say you have both feet in an early grave. [5 stars]
#6: "My Nearest & Dearest": This one is very, very quick and intense, but still remains playful. Another song that oscillates between major and minor, and possessing a complex formal development which goes far beyond what's found in most of pop. Francky tries his hand at some gassed-up yodeling at the end of this one; it's not bad. [5 stars]
#7: "No Matter": Another total romp, this one full of a happy abandonment. [4 stars]
#8: "Rapture in Common" or (?) "Communal Transport": Another jaunt, possessing almost another kind of soca feel. It's a little tricky translating this one's title, as the French "transport" can mean either transport as in a car, or state of being transported in rapture. The singers taunt "Chauffeur, la voiture ne marche pas", literally "driver, the car doesn't work!" But the fact that it's clearly a taunt feeds into my dictionary's first meaning of the French "chauffeur", which is "one who stokes the fires". Sounds like a situation for Viagra Man to solve, though I'm not sure the drug was yet available in 1993, when this CD was copyrighted. Mais, c'est très amusant, n'est-ce pas? Oui? Oui! [4½ stars]
