As a piece of propaganda, James Blunt's album Back to Bedlam does more for changing the face of the British Army than a series of television adverts ever could. Swapping a rifle for a guitar, the former cavalryman's ballad-heavy debut is a clearly aiming to win the battle for the public's hearts and minds. The U.K. success of singles like "You're Beautiful" and "No Bravery" (inspired by his time stationed in Bosnia) are both heartfelt and sensitive, the latter packing an additional emotional punch beyond the typical lovelorn ballads of his contemporaries like Damien Rice. But Blunt also sings with conviction about matters of the heart, and that's the territory that most of Back to Bedlam visits, with songs of loss like "Goodbye My Lover", "So Long Jimmy" and "Billy". And throughout, the arrangements remain understated yet effective, thanks to the input of such heavyweight producers and songwriters like Linda Perry and Guy Chambers. All of which prove that there's a lot of depth to this modern, musical hero. --Robert Burrow

Album Description

Simply put, James Blunt is the most successful debut artist of the year in the UK! However, he isn't one of those guys who finished school and set off to become a musician. The one time British army captain (and latest ina long line of Blunts in the armed forces) served stints as a peacekeeper in Kosovo and guard at Buckingham Palace before hanging up his uniform. His days of carrying a gun behind him, Blunt quickly began turning heads with his soaring vocals and stirring songs. His debut album, Back to Bedlam, has earned widespread praise, including comparisons to the likes of Damien Rice, David Gray and a young Elton John.

5 out of 5 stars Love this cd?.......2007-07-16

I love this cd! I understand that sometimes profanity is the only way to truly express how you feel but, I wouldn't listen to it with my grandchild for fear that he may learn some not so choice words.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it.......2007-07-02

I bought this album for one particular song...gee, can you guess which one? "You're Beautiful", of course! I just love his voice and I especially love the sentiment he expresses in this song. The rest of the songs are good, too, but I was hooked by just the one.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S ALL GOOD.......2007-06-09

I think Blunt's music tends to be a little winey. But the more I listened to the CD the better it got. Every song is a winner.

2 out of 5 stars boring.......2007-06-03

Great idea it was to get back at an old girlfriend by selling her memory, but did you have to get back at listeners with a pretty boring set of unmemorable songs?

Endless. Maybe I'll leave this disc on the subway.

5 out of 5 stars unbelievable!!!!.......2007-06-01

My CD collection runs the gamut - from Roger Miller, to Elton John, to Def Leppard and I can tell you this is an incredible CD from start to finish. My favorite is So Long Jimmy but I like them all and I usually skip through at least a few songs on every CD. My parent don't usually like ANY of my music but I put this on to play Memorial Day while we were grillin' burgers and they loved it! He has a haunting, and amazing voice - buy it - you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars this album deserves no stars.......2007-01-03

Some deluded person with bad hearing compared James Blunt to Tori Amos. Hardly. He was lucky with 'Beautiful'. Listen closely- that sucks too! The ramblings of an emotionally desperate middle school student. I rue the day she made eye contact with James. This album is like hummingbird nectar- lotsa sugar but no substance. I hate that I was tricked into buying it. I hate that James Blunt took 80 minutes of my life that I will never recover. I was so hopeful when I bought it. Bottom line: Melodramatic lyrics coupled with uninspired music. Skip it.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE James Blunt's Music.......2006-07-27

I wasn't sure if I would like all the songs on this CD, and after listening too it I have to say it was WELL worth the money!!! I like the 'clean' version better as I didn't think the cursing really fit in the songs I heard with it in (and I am not the type that is against cursing).

5 out of 5 stars Back to Bedlam.......2006-07-10

I loved every song on this CD. I hope James Blunt is around for a very long time!

5 out of 5 stars Back to Bedlam.......2006-07-02

Fabulous!! I like every song and love most of them! If you like Coldplay, you will love this.

2 out of 5 stars back to bedlam.......2006-06-20

Other then "You're Beautiful" and "Wisemen", this is a pretty crappy cd! James' voice sounds the same in every song. When I first heard those two songs I thought WOW, this guy's cd must sound fantastic. I was wrong, really wrong. I have to agree though that some songs are somewhat catchy, but it's nothing special. "Voice of an angel" my butt, his voice gets annoying after awhile. He sounds like he's getting over a cold or something. Not recommended, unless you're a fan of You're Beautiful and Wisemen, or better yet, download the songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful songs and lovely voice full of emotion.......2007-07-21

James Blunt sings from his heart and expresses his emotion fully. His voice is very touching that I like to listen over and over again......

4 out of 5 stars Capo on the 8th Fret.......2007-06-16

James Blunt was everywhere all of a sudden. After they featured him on Oprah, sales went through the roof, his music was featured in big time bank commercials on TV, you couldn't turn around without hearing it blasting on the radio, he was on Love Monkey starring Tom Cavanaugh, before it was cancelled, playing himself, and who is that having his nipple nibbled by a super model on the beach at St. Tropez?

Why it is James Blunt. But being ubiquitous, as it were, has its drawbacks, so get ready for the Blunt backlash.

Some people complained they were sick of his high voice, hearing the song so much, and why did he put his capo on the 8th fret, on the song "You're Beautiful," making it sound like he was plucking a ukelele. He sounds like a stalker in that song, obsessed with some girl he will never know in the biblical sense.

To the scoffers I say, James Blunt has prevailed, and not only that, he has done pretty well for a drab looking English bloke who is not really very tall. That super model was his new girl friend, which makes the song, "You're Beautiful" a self-fullfiling prophecy, or if anything, it exceeds his dream.

Back to Bedlam is a great album by a promising newcomer who has already scored several hits on his first go round. Love the way the piano is woven around his voice and guitar in "You're Beautiful" and on the other cuts on Back to Bedlam.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD...BUT BEWARE.......2007-02-17

is the same cd that comes inside of the DVD "THE SESSIONS", so I got 2 now and don't know hat to do.

4 out of 5 stars Mr. Blunt has my vote!.......2007-01-24

I love this CD. Be aware though, that the "F" word is used in Beautiful instead of "flying high" like it says on the radio.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have album! (SPECIAL EDITION).......2006-11-30

James Blunt is definitely one of the most successful newcomers around. His single "You're Beautiful" topped all the charts and is still a huge success. In Europe, though, he was also very successful with his other singles "Goodbye My Lover", "High" and, most notably, "Wisemen". All these fantastic songs can be found on his album "Back To Bedlam".
"Back To Bedlam" is one of those rare albums with no filler tracks, nailing song after song after song. Blunt's style is mellow, nostalgic and melodramatic. He has a wonderful falsetto, which he often uses in his most emotionally charged ballads ("You're Beautiful", "Goodbye My Lover", "No Bravery"), but he never crosses the line of being corny or pathetic. Sure, there are a lot of artists of this style out there, but James Blunt is actually an awesome musician, a fantastic songwriter and a great singer.
He proves his singing talents even more on the second disk of this special edition of "Back To Bedlam". The second disk is called "Live in Ireland" and it is a live performance of most of the songs from the album, with three new tracks - "Where Is My Mind?", "Fall At Your Feet" and the fantastic "Sugar Coated". The CD is also enhanced with the "Goodbye My Lover" video, and a short documentary about the making of it.
This is a great double-disk to have in your collection. "Back To Bedlam" is an outstanding debut album, and it will be interesting to follow James Blunt's career from this point on.

Album Details

Recorded and Produced in Los Angeles with Tom Rockrock (Beck, Elliott Smith, Badly Drawn Boy) this Album Takes the Listener Through Heartfelt Songs of Unattainable Romances, Lost Loves and Friend's Failures Before Climaxing with James's First-hand Experience of War. They're Songs of Universal Appeal, all Delivered with a Powerfully Unique Vocal. In a World Where Division is Rife and Government Intelligence (In Both Senses of the Word) Remains Questionable, James's Songs Override and Unite. James Blunt's Life-story is Nothing Short of Unique. His Army Career Saw Him Stationed in Kosovo as Part of Nato's Peacekeeping Force. He Then Protected the Queen on Horseback and the Queen Mother Whilst She Lay in State. He Has, it Can Be Said Without Exaggeration, Lived a Life that Should Provide Enough Material for a Dozen Albums. This is a Definitively Different Singer-songwriter.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great album, but..........2006-10-10

Blunt's voice admittedly does take some getting used to, although "You're Beautiful" is such a tantalizing, mesmeric song. For me, it evokes a distant memory of a long lost love. A very powerful song, indeed. There should be a website about this album, and about the YB song, especially!

4 out of 5 stars Intensely Soft and Massively Appealing.......2006-07-13

James Blunt's "Back to Bedlam" comes at a time when people seem to have taken to rock and rap music. This album is a throwback really to the notion that vociferous music intinsic to commercially directed songs is the norm of this age. This is the debut album of a man who was in the British army a few years back. "Back to Bedlam" is a compilation of intensely soft songs dissolved in forceful meanings and implications. The songs invoke a personal tone and their charm lies in their massiove appeal to the listener's heart.

James Blunt himself admits that this his maiden album is actually a personal documentary of himself and no song is as personal or more tragic than the lovely track "You're Beautiful". This single was the third highest selling track in the UK i 2005 and with this single,Blunt became the first British pop star to lead the US Singles Chart since Elton john. "You're Beautiful" is a tragic love song that arises out of a host of feelings that crowded on the artist's heart when he perceived his ex-girlfriend in a London subway with another man. This song is easily the best of the album and trembles with longing, sorrow and pathos,a feature that ripples across the album.

"Goodbye My Lover" and "No Bravery" are two songs that bear ample bearing to James Blunt's exquisite ability to resound his most intricate feelings with a graceful force in the listener's bosom. "Goodbye My Lover" was voted a funeral favourite in Great Britain and follows a very, very gentle rhytm and simple but power lyrics and the song probably reflects the singer's pangs of separation from his lover. "No Bravery" exposes the harsh and disturbing effects of war and blood and death and misfortunes and hopelessness on a soldier and James Blunt's personal experiences in Bosnia coupled with his brilliant and uncommon voice paints a vivid picture of life in the army.

The other songs are grat and follow a similar pattern. They're infused with a regular and smooth rhythm and never reach a mid-tempo proper. "Billy","High","Tears and Rain","Out of My Mind","So Long,Jimmy" and "Cry" are all good songs but somehow disappoint the listener should he compare them all with "You're Beautiful". The album is very much romance driven but the stunning song "Wisemen" with its philosophical intonations brings some kind of avariety into this undisputably great album.

The best aspect about "Back to Bedlam",barring the romanticism that James Blunt's career switch evokes,is the unique endearing and appealing nature of all the songs. Emotions and personal experiences are perfectly harmonised in the songs and really few eyebrows would be raised by the amazing success this album has have had all around the world and mainly in the UK where it was rated as the thurd highest selling album in 2005. James Blunt is the new pop music star to hit the music industry and, given the male solo vocalist's elegance and a smart gentleness underlining his songs, one is invariably led to suspect that this army officer-turned-singer's unprecedented success with "Back to Bedlam" is not going to be a one-time wonder.

1 out of 5 stars Do you actually listen to music????.......2006-04-01

Firstly, how many of the people that have bought this album heard a track or two on the radio?
Maybe you saw him on TV?
Maybe you bought it because it's 'cool' to like this kind of music at the moment?
That's right, you probably listen to any kind of music (no matter the quality) that has been forced down your throat repeatedly.

James Blunt (and many other mainstream acts) represent what is wrong with the world today.
Most people don't five a f**k about music when it comes down to it, and are quite happy to listen to what is paraded in front of them.
I urge you (if you've read this far), to try and find music YOURSELF. Distance yourself from the media machine - you might just be suprised.

As for this album: It's completely derivative, with every element done 100 times better 30 thirty years ago.
James Blunt has a terrible voice - the comparisons to a cat being strangled mentioned elsewhere are accurate, although it sounds like the cat is also passing out razors.
The songs are dull and predictable, the 'emotions' having been well planned out in an A+R meeting at the record company.

Yet this album is extremely popular and acclaimed by many.
A sad state of affairs indeed....

5 out of 5 stars Addicting.......2006-03-17

After seeing James Blunt perform on Oprah, I got his CD. I have been singing his praises ever since. I cannot stop listening to it. He sings with such raw emotion and his songs are so intensely personal. Every song on this CD is great. If you like Coldplay and Neil Young, you will love this!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, simple songs.......2006-03-03

James Blunt is definitely my new obsession. I adore his music and I truly love this album. Sometimes simple really is better. His lyrics aren't very elaborate but they are very poetic. James sings with such raw emotion, too, that he brings them alive. I've watched a few live performances of him and he conveys his emotion through his eyes. He's mesmerizing to watch. His voice is unique, his songs are excellent, and this is one of the most amazing albums I've ever heard. Buy it; you won't regret it!

CD includes two bonus tracks, 'You're Beautiful' (Acoustic Version) and 'No Bravery' (Live). Warner. 2005.

      5 out of 5 stars A Major Talent!.......2006-11-14

This CD blew me away. Most of today's new music leaves me cold; I grew up with 50's Rock 'n Roll and pop music has changed a bit since then. I heard "Goodbye My Lover" on the radio and it stopped me in my tracks -- a good trick since I was on the freeway at the time! James Blunt is a MAJOR talent. Great songs, incredible lyrics. His songs and voice are full of passion, sorrow, and honesty -- a combination I find irresistable. James Blunt obviously has a lot to say!

"You're Beautiful" is another winner, a rueful tribute to a love that never was... but might have been. The CD ends with "No Bravery", written by Blunt while serving with the British Army in Kosovo. It has a tragic beauty that brings tears to my eyes. I love every song on this CD; the three I've mentioned are simply my favorites.

If you've never heard of James Blunt (I hadn't!), give "Back to Bedlam" a listen. You'll be very glad you did.
