The Wailin' Jennys--Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody--are three Canadian singer-songwriters with already established careers who first got together for a one-shot gig in 2002 and, to their surprise, discovered that their voices blended in an almost magical harmony. They decided to put their solo endeavors aside for a while to see where this gift would take them, and the appealing folk-pop vibe of 40 Days is the result. They perform an eclectic selection of material, including covers of John Hiatt's "Take It Down" and Neil Young's "Old Man" plus lovely versions of the old English folk songs "The Parting Glass" and "Saucy Sailor." However, it's the original songs that stand out most. As you would expect, each Jenny has a distinctive voice and writing style, but the amazing vocal harmonies help Luft's spiky, rock-inflected songs, Mehta's poetic and mysterious meditations, and Moody's lively Celtic-tinged melodies blend into a seamless whole. --Michael John Simmons
Product Description
"40 Days" represents the exciting US debut of Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft...three young Canadian performers whose harmonies and songwriting have been called "spine-tingling," "angelic," and "breathtaking." The group was formed more-or-less as a lark...all three Winnipeg women were established solo artists and admired in Canadian folk circles for their singing and gifted songwriting...and the so-called "supergroup" was meant to last for one night only at a local folk club. As fate would have it, the audience went crazy for them performing in that configuration and a Canadian folk phenomenon was born. With their stirring voices and richly emotional original songs, the Jennys have created one of the most memorable and tantalizing first albums in a long time.

Can't stop listening to this CD!.......2007-07-05
We were first introduced to the Wailin' Jennys on A Prairie Home Companion last year and found their songs and their sound to be so memorable that we purchased tickets to see them in concert locally this past May. We have since purchased both the 40 Days and Firecracker CDs, and just can't recommend them enough. Incredible harmonies in beautifully written, inspiring, timeless songs.
Record of the Year.......2007-03-23
If you've not heard this album, you're missing a masterpiece. The harmony is stunning, the song selection fabulous, the arrangements are subtle, tasteful and appropriately understated, and the overall production a huge success. It's my best find from last year and one of my all time favorites albums ever.
very nice.......2007-01-15
i had heard this cd as a background music for a running set of home pictures. perfect. plan to do the same. also nice to play on my day off cleaning days. crank the music and go. the lyrics are perfect. enjoy
Nice Debut .......2006-11-10
A folk group, which calls Winnipeg, Manitoba home. Nice blend of songs, beautiful arrangements. Of particular note is the cover of Niel Youngs song "Old Man." Worth the price for any folk music fan.
Joyful.......2006-11-05
Having come across the Jenny's quite by accident while listening to the Garrison Keiler Radio Show on BBc Radio 7. Their harmonising was sublime and prompted me to get on line and buy all their CDs immediatelly. To say I have not been disappointed is an understatement. These girls are the best.

Enjoyment of old Russian liturgical nusic.......2007-01-09
The Basso Profundo recording reminds one of the recordings of Tibetan Monks in chant and is very stirring.
Finally, a recording I can sing along with!.......2006-11-04
As a low bass and wannabe octavist, I really enjoy singing along with this recording. Luckily, I have performed the Rachmaninov "All Night Vigil", Tchaikovshy "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom", and other works in Old Church Slavonic, so the words are mostly familiar.
I still find it amazing that these singers can make notes in the midrange still sound low! Enjoy!
Good Music from Russia.......2005-07-21
This CD is very good for those who like orthodox music. Buy it!
Great CD.......2003-03-02
I have done a good bit of research on basso profundo's, contrabasses, etc and these guys seem to be lower than any I've heard. The soloist on "Do Not Reject Me In My Old Age" has a full voiced G1, below low bass C which he hits a number of times on the CD. Very amazing recording... good musically, not the VERY best choir I've ever heard or anything, but definetly good. Russian music is great, many of the tracks are very dark musically, but there are some more majestic tracks, and a few tracks that sound kinda militaristic.
Well Below the Bass Range.......2002-01-15
The music on this CD won't be to everyone's liking, but the unique sound of the voice of a "basso profundo" or "octavist"
is a musical rarity that shouldn't be missed. These basses have a gripping effect, with a timbre resembling that of an organ's pedal tones. These basses can sing the low A below the bass range. They are, simply, extraordinarily powerful voices. Savor the unearthly sound of them. Who knows - you might just get to like Russian polyphonic liturgical chant, as well.

Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection.......2007-03-05
I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.
PERFECT!.......2006-10-26
There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.
Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19
This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!
More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02
Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan

If you merged L.A.'s gangsta-rap tradition with its hip-hop underground, Xzibit would be the bastard progeny. While his Likwit Crew peers, The Alkaholiks, flow with finesse, Xzibit chooses fierceness, exuding a sinister grimness with his gruff delivery. For his sophomore project, Xzibit convinces Ice Cube's old producer, Sir Jinx, to come out the woodwork, resulting in familiar but funky tracks like "Shroomz" and "Chamber Music." Other winners are courtesy of beat makers like A Kid Called Roots, who flexes a subtly sublime track on "Nobody Sound Like Me," and the Alkies' E-Swift, responsible for the thumping booms on "Let It Rain." If you're looking for an ill alternative to L.A.'s reality-rap monopoly, put your money on the "big, bad, insane, black John McClaine," Xzibit. --Oliver Wang
Customer Reviews:
X's CLASSIC.......2002-04-26
Xzibit wasn't always a West Coast hip-hop household name. Before his popular collaborations with Dr. Dre and the platinum selling Restless LP, Xzibit was a hungry underground LA emcee without a lot of mainstream attention, only vicious lyrics and relentless flow. After making noise with the single "Paparazzi" from his critically acclaimed debut "At The Speed of Life", Xzibit dropped what is still considered his best album, "40 Dayz and 40 Nights". Fueled with a mixture of East Coast wordplay and West Coast themes the album was almost automatically dubbed a Classic. Not that the backing of Los Angeles's Likwit Crew with the dark and demanding production from Sir Jinx didn't add to the fire power of the albums tracks. The thundering soundscape of "Chamber Music" demands the listeners attention from the beginning and the Rass Kass and Saafir backed "3 Card Molly" only certify the lyrical capabilities of the West's finest. As Rass puts it "If you're looking for sympathy then you better look between R and T in the ... dictionary", because no sympathy will come from this record, only 17 tracks of raw west coast hip-hop. The albums acclaimed single "What U See is What U Get" became an anthem on its own and "Los Angeles Times" paints a vivid picture of the LA streets. Those of you who didn't hear about the black John McClain before shouting out a Restless "X" at a club need to hit rewind and listen to the Xzibit at his finest moment.
What a load of Crap,or is it.......2001-10-19
Just a load of shouting and bass, Ya lieeeee! Cd's heavy bredgin' but its proper old.
xzibit got skillz.......2000-06-17
this is the shit as was his first album. the album is so sick because xzibit has the kind of lyrics and beatz that just make ya bounce ya head to it.if you want some mad undergrond west coast shit go get this.cant wait for his new album the restless.
One of the most underrated M. C.s out there today........1999-04-26
The X-man really impressed me with his debut single "Papparatzi" and the mellow, but deep follow up "Foundation." This album is really well put together in terms of melody and production. The Golden State Warrior immediately gets your head jerking with the first track "Chamber Music". Xzibit then teams up with fellow Californians Ras Kass and Saafir on the banging "3 Card Molly." Your attention is kept then on "What you see is what you get"," Handle your Business", and the Quincy Jones sample laced "Nobody Sound Like Me."Hip hop heads should know where he got the exercpts for the hook from." From there the album drifts off with "Pussy Pop (featuring Meth and Jay-O felony)" and "Shroomz." After that you will adjust your volume with the slick, up-tempo sounds of "Focus", the thought-provoking "Deeper",and the bass kicking sound of "Los Angeles Times." In addition, X gets some dope assistance from the Alkoholiks and King T on "Let it Rain." Lastly, the LP is finished off nicely with "Inside Job", and "Recycled Assassins".
The new Los Angeles King.......1999-04-21
XZ has the raw funk vibe that makes an MC great. His flow is rough as sandpaper and well crafted and put together. Likwit Crew(Alkaholiks,Defari,Xzibit,KIng T) are establishing lyrical dominace over their neighbors in L.A. This album combines the hardcore drums, and semi-spooky keyboards that define gangsta rap and puts a twist to it. The result shines best on Killa Cali classics like "what U see is what U get", "3 card Molly" and "P# Pop".

Product Description
While working on the book and film project, "40 Days and 1001 Nights", in which internationally famed bellydancer, Tamalyn Dallal lives in five Islamic countries, writes and films her experiences, she was in Egypt's Siwa Oasis. A Bedouin man asked "Would you like to hear the music from Zanzibar?". He played "Ifkhar", and she fell in love...with the music. That song inspired her journey to Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Africa that used to be part of the Omani Sultanate. "Taarab" is the most popular music of Zanzibar. It began near the turn of the century when the sultan sent musicians to Egypt to study music with the great masters. A unique style emerged, gracefully blending classical Egyptian, East African, and even Cuban sounds. "Taarab" means "Being transported by music". "Bashraf" are instrumental songs also played in Zanzibar. This style originated in Turkey, lives on throughout the Arab world, and Zanzibaris gave it a whole new meaning. On her first day in Zanzibar, a young man approached and asked, what are you looking for? She replied "Taarab".She was led up an old staircase, to the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club, that was formed 101 years ago, and today, it is like the "Buena Vista Social Club" of Zanzibar. Ikhwani Safaa are the creators of her favorite song "Ifkhar", and the only people in the world who play it. Ms. Dallal and Ikhwani Safaa collaborated on this cd, using Bashraf, and adapting Taarab music to make the perfect, most intense and heartfelt bellydance music on the market. If you like the classic sound of Egypt's "Golden Age", coupled with romanicism of old Havana, with depth and complexity, and no synthesizers, you will love this cd.

"The Perfect Belly Dance Music.".......2006-08-23
Arranged for belly dance performances, this CD is a real find not only for dancers but for any World Music enthusiast. It presents new and traditional compositions from the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar, a band that was founded in 1905 and has been playing ever since, passing its music along from each generation to the next. In Zanzibar, its CDs outsell all other music albums combined, though they and their music are virtually unknown beyond the island's shores. The population of Zanzibar, an autonomous island state that is part of Tanzania, is made up of Swahili-speaking Islamic East Africans, and their traditional music, called taarab, is a unique blend of Egyptian-Arabic melodies and instrumentation with the driving rhythms of equatorial Africa and Swahili lyrics. Tamalyn Dallal, the CD's producer, is one of America's top belly dancers and a former Miss World of Belly Dance. She left Florida's South Beach scene a couple of years back after about 25 years as a performer, leader of an internationally known dance company and director of South Beach's MidEastern Dance Exchange studio, to embark on a solo journey of explore through the most remote parts of the Islamic world, teaching, studying regional dance and music styles and gathering material for an ambitious multimedia project - videos, recordings and a planned book. Since she left, many of us who knew her have been following her adventures via the blogosphere. In the liner notes to this CD, she describes how, in Malindi, Zanzibar, she followed a young guide into a back alley and up a wooden staircase to a rooftop. "This is Ikhwani Safaa," he told her. "You should come back in the night." She did, spent evening after evening at the club, and realized, "This is the perfect belly dance music." And Dallal knows what she's talking about, as this CD proves.
