Originally released back in 1999, Seven Eyes, Seven Horns gives fans of cerebral rap another chance to enjoy the off-kilter style Scaramanga (a.k.a. Sir Menelik) established on Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon project. Combining an intricate, wordy flow with relentless delivery, Scaramanga wavers between kicking knowledge (the previously released "7XL" from Soundbombing II) and shameless hedonistic indulgence on "Strip Club Bait." The latter is almost entirely constructed of phone-tone blips, and the inventive sounds showcased on this album also include thumb-piano plucks on "Sugar 99." The overall sound, however, leans towards the sparsely arranged New York boom bap of the early '90s. Producers here include Godfather Don, whose smooth soundscapes provide a complimentary contrast to Scaramanga's complex verbal barrage. Scara's Wu-style stream of consciousness flow is certainly capable. But for those with limited attention spans, its lack of curveballs and change-ups detracts from his vivid lyricism, and an otherwise solid effort. --Del F. Cowie

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars very good album by Scaramanga aka Sir Menelik aka Cyclops 4000.......2006-01-28

this is his first solo album that came out in 1999,first of all the beats are bananas and his lyrics are crazy, very different from kool keith as far as production wise.this is a must for that new york underground rugged hip hop that's been missing these days.stand out tracks are Shallah Magnetic,Special Efx,and Mind I C Mine, a hot beat by showbiz from ditc. recommended for fans of kool keith and that camp.

5 out of 5 stars classic hip hop.......2005-06-13

had this CD for a minute and it still gets spins often. Sick beats, dope rhymes- you really can't go wrong with that combination. Scara's rhyme style is so complex and out there yet so laid back its really an engima. check this out!

4 out of 5 stars Very effective. Excellent flow. Truly fresh beats........2002-05-15

This is a well-excecuted album. And it should be considering that it is was over two years in the making with songs being recorded from 1998 to 2000. A detail that the casual listener might not notice is that this is actually a concept album: It's a representation of the worldview of Scaramanga, the more laid-back and thoughtful of Sir Menelik's several "personalities" (truly in the spirit of his mentor, Kool Keith). The role of "ghetto philosopher" has been played by many, but most don't come off as highly polished intellecutally or as authentic as this, and it's hard to think of another emcee who can match Scaramanga's incredible flow. When he occasionally drops into an iambic pentameter (a la Shakespeare), the effect is almost hypnotic. Despite the consistency of the themes presented in Seven Eyes... there are definite low points on the album. Some However, tracks like "Star Of The Empire", "Holdin' New Cards", and "Shallah Magnetic" make it well worth the purchase. "S.O.T.E." is easily one of the best hip-hop songs of 2000. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars For true hip-hop heads.......2000-06-23

For those unfamiliar with the tight lyrical styles of Sir Menelik a.k.a SCARAMANGA pick this album up to see what youre missing. Menelik who first came up under Kool Keith on Dr. Octagon and Sex Style shows how he can still keep it tight on the solo tip. Although a few of the beats could have needed better production, he more than makes up for it on tracks such as "strip club bait" where the drum beat is accompanied by a ringing telephone creating a truly eerie beat. Other notable tracks include "death letter remix" with Scholarwise who drops some seriously tight lyrics,"holdin new cards" and "special effex" are definitley worth checking out. Overall this album comes through with a fresh sound that isn't common enough in hip-hop today. Definitely worth picking up.

4 those of you fortunate enough 2 have even heard of this guy, this cd will not dissapoint.Sir menilk aka scaramanga has been around 4 a while.True underdwellers will remember his antics from dr.octogon with partner kool keith.Well, this time our friend is on his own and does more than just hold his own. This is 1 of those recordings that you will keep rewinding because every time you do you will hear something differen't.If you have 2 go to the bathroom you may miss something. If your "really" into true lyrics this CD is 4 you.
