Amazon.com essential recording

The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2007-01-11

Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!

2 out of 5 stars CD has missing track.......2006-12-03

John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.

I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-11-10

I absolutely love the music from Out of Africa, but I do not recommend this CD at all. The sound quality is so poor that I could only bear listening to it once.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Buying!.......2006-11-06

Highly recommended for those who love instrumental music. A lot of beautiful flute, strings and some piano and harp. Very contemplative and hauntingly beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars my opinion.......2007-08-01

This recording was reccomended somewhere as being even better than the newer version with Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming - it really is tops, I think. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is as lyrical as ever. And the other soloists are also breathtaking.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

It helps calm the overly busy mind, soothe the emotions, and relax the body. The CD contains both the Sleep Easy guided meditation with music in the background, as well as a track of music alone which can be used at any time for its relaxing effect. The insert that comes with the CD includes "Principles to Sleep By" which provide a backdrop to help with sleep.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Delivered what it promised.......2007-06-02

My husband & I were both undergoing a lot of stress that made it very difficult to fall asleep. We didn't want to take medications. I was skeptical of a CD being able to put us to sleep but I was desperate so I ordered this one. From the sample I heard on Amazon, Mary's voice sounded very soothing and the music was soft and soothing as well - not the case with some of the other CDs I sampled. The first night we tried it, we both fell asleep before the music ended. I don't even know if I was paying attention to what Mary actually said because it was her voice, not the words that was so relaxing. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is having difficulty falling asleep, or even if you're just stressed out and need to relax. I think I will probably try some of their other CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and Helpful for Sleep.......2007-01-02

This CD is a different approach to sleep, but one that I found very effective. This goes beyond just a relaxing meditation to a deeper process that allows you to change your unconscious patterns that get in the way of sleep. At first, I didn't notice much, but after listening a few more times, my sleep was deeper and more refreshing. Good alternative if other approaches are not working.

5 out of 5 stars I Fall Asleep Faster, Sleep Quality Improved.......2006-11-18

I am encouraged by how quickly I drifted off to sleep, faster than I usually can. The music is wonderful and soothing, and the voice is gentle and reassuring. I also notice a definite change in the quality of my sleep. It seems deeper and less easily disturbed. On days after using the CD the night before I feel more relaxed and refreshed.

1 out of 5 stars Donated it to the library........2006-11-10

We didn't like it.
The seller was great, got it to us ASAP.

5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, very effective.......2006-06-19

I have used this CD now for about three months. It is not only very pleasant to listen to, it is also very intelligent. Mary suggests that you not 'try' to sleep, but just relax and pay attention to your body and thoughts. As you do this, you slowly relax more and more until you effortlessly slip into sleep.

Now, when I lay down to sleep, I automatically start to scan my body, readjust my position until I feel comfortable, and observe my thoughts. As I do this, I often fall asleep without the CD.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant work.......2006-09-06

A must listen for any David Bromberg fan. Masterful guitar work, classic Bromberg.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Bromberg.......2000-10-08

I saw David Bromberg in concert many times in the 70's at Devon PA. He had a great mix of blues and rock that I enjoyed immensely. This CD is wonderful and I've been playing it over and over since I bought it. It's truly vintage Bromberg and I feel like I'm sitting there in the concert in the round at Devon again when it plays. "Sharon" is my favorite. Terrific CD. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars You haven't got Blues collection until you got a Bromberg........1999-10-19

Like many Bromberg fans of the 70's I have been waiting for these albums to come out on CD. David Bromberg, who has played backup on a coupla dozen albums is one of the genuises of the string instrumnet. His clear picking of Guitar, bass, banjo or ukelele is up there with any master player and his work often surpasses those same masters in unexpected ways. These have to heard to be appreciated. His albums are a great mixture of blues, rock, and bluegrass with a voice that can switch from sad to angry to funny as fast as he can switch chords. But David is at his best live. Where he can even make you tap and stomp and dance to the bluesiest of ballads. "Sharon" and "Keys to the Highway" are just a coupla examples. This is an album to work to or enjoy in a long trip when you need to belt out a tune with some heart. Enjoy this album I swear you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let this deal go down with out you.......1999-10-06

I had been waiting for the all acoustic "My own house" to come out on CD for years. What a bonus to get David's live album attached to it. This takes me back to the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver in the late 70's. This man can play-Everything he touches- with such passion and mastery it is a shame that he no longer tours. Highlights include "Don't let your Deal go down", and "Yankee's Revenge" for some great picking, the touching instrumental "Sheebeg and Sheemore", along with "Spanish Johnny" perhaps the best song on the album, and a great Live rendition of "As years go passing by". Thanks David for putting on one of the best shows I had the privilege to be a part of over the past thirty years. This CD is a great way to remember those days.

Veruca Salt were a band torn between catchy pop hooks and arena rock dreams. Producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crüe) tried to help them realize the "big" sound with mixed success. Now, he's helping former Veruca Salt singer-guitarist Nina Gordon turn away from "big rock" and toward the lush power pop championed by musicians like Aimee Mann. The title track, "Now I Can Die," and "2003" feature stacked harmonies and a carefree gait that recall the melodic renaissance of early-'80s new wave, with the additional bite of modern-day production values. Hammond B-3s, pedal steels, Mellotrons, and Chamberlins add somber texture to "Horses in the City" and "Hold On to Me" without sacrificing the straight-ahead rock feel. Producer Rock adds a bit too much gloss here and there, but in any case Gordon's a power-pop diva in waiting. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-26

I, too, am a fan of Veruca Salt. Nina Gordon makes a departure from what I expect much of Veruca Salt's music to sound like. But, overall, this is a great first solo album. I purchased it very soon after its release. I enjoyed it then and I still enjoy it now. I believe this album reflects a certain degree of musical maturity that Nina Gordon has developed.

4 out of 5 stars Come for the Veruca Salt, stay for the Aimee Mann.......2007-06-08

I was a fan of Veruca Salt, so I just had to get Nina Gordon's first solo album. It has a lot of the pop sensibility of her old band, but her songwriting and singing seem to have grown quite a bit. I realized, however, that so much of what I like about the album comes from a very strong Aimee Mann influence (particularly the early 90s I'M WITH STUPID). If I remember correctly, there's even some personnel or a producer in common. The stand-out tracks are "Fade to Black" and "New Year's Eve."

2 out of 5 stars nothing much different here, move along.......2007-03-04

First off, as qualifiers, I am a big fan of Veruca Salt. I am also interested in lots of different female vocalists ranging from 'kill all rock stars' grungy to highly produced Avril. There is a point in listening to the highly produced stuff when you ask yourself a couple of questions: "what is unique about this song/album/style" and for me especially is there any "catch song"--one that stands out on the first listen, that you want to listen to over and over, and holds your interest into the rest of the album. Avril had "complicated", Juliana Hatfield had "my sister", Veruca Salt had "seether". Sometimes these songs are the released singles, sometimes they are not. I listened to this album twice looking for the song. It is not here. Like a previous reviewer, I guess I liked "badway" the best, and the album did seem to pick up a bit near the end---but not enough to move it over to my ipod. MY general opinion of this is "produced to the point where there is nothing unique left". I paid a penny for this album, so I don't feel put out. And- I also purchased Nina's second album... which at least from my 30 sec listens, I will probably find more to my liking.

5 out of 5 stars Really good!.......2006-10-24

Catchy/melodic songs. Great lyrics. Great singing - Nina's pitch is perfect, as well as her vibrato, no matter what the dynamic is. She can rock out or do a 180 and tap into her sweet, feminine side. Stacy Jones on drums, no need to say any more. Oh, and I love Veruca Salt too!

5 out of 5 stars "I could leave but what for?".......2006-05-14

Nina Gordon's Tonight and the Rest of my Life is former Veruca Salt's first solo record and it is great! Standout tracks include: Hate Your Way, Now I can Die, Hold on to Me, Badway, Number One Camera, New Year's Eve, and the title-track. Gordon's voice and songwriting is incredible, but how come she hasn't released a new album in the last six years? Please Nina, we want a new album from you! This album is produced by Bob Rock, he also produced Veruca Salt's second album, Eight arms to hold you. Defintely get this gorgeous and profound album, Nina is a goddess!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description

Ambience Minimus is the first album of deep relaxation music by Liquid Mind, the name used by Los Angeles composer & songwriter Chuck Wild for his series of very slow stress relief music albums. The music of Liquid Mind is flowing and beautiful, uninterrupted relaxation, the ideal companion for those working long hours at computers terminals who suffer from the effects of stress. The music of Liquid Mind is great music to massage to, great music to create to, great music to go to sleep by, great music for intimate moments with one you love. This functional and peaceful album is also used by parents to quiet hyperactive children, and to assist themselves in going back to sleep in the middle of a difficult night.

5 out of 5 stars More soporific than a lecture on differential equations (a good thing!).......2007-05-14

You do, as another reviewer has pointed out, only need one or two of "Liquid Mind" cd's, because they are all composed on the same principle. So listen to the various samples for each album and find one that you seem to like. Ten minutes of this on my cd player in my bedroom and I am soundly asleep. I've never experienced anything like this; it's like a sleeping potion for your ears.

I imagine you could do yoga, relaxation therapy, or massage to this. As for me, I play this before bed and I find I sleep soundly and immediately. Better for you than a prescription and no hangover!

5 out of 5 stars Brain Massage.......2006-11-21

Four generous tracks of angelic layers of interwoven ethereal cloudscapes. One part new age one part ambient. A very satisfying massage of your frontal lobe. Indeed you will feel somehow lighter after playing this. Yet not the kind of music to "listen" to but rather play in the background for daily mind liquification. Best of all the Liquid Mind projects. This is not "minimalist" music as the title suggests. It is cleanly produced yet avoids the error of overproduction.

4 out of 5 stars Ambience Minimus - Liquid Mind (1).......2006-08-20

I use this product for massage background music. All Liquid Mind Series work well for massage purposes. After purchasing the entire series, I realized you really only needed 1 or 2 of this style.

2 out of 5 stars Ambience Minimus.......2006-08-07

Packaging for this CD suggested the ambience would be mystical, magical and relaxing. The CD was totally disappointing. The sounds emitted were very barren, and there was no "song". The sounds that were audible were very pretty, but they were scarce.

5 out of 5 stars Yes! What I was looking for...........2005-04-22

I had been looking for another CD to play during meditation that was similar to Awakened Mind by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, and I finally found one I like. The Awakened Mind was so great because of the "entraining" of sounds and also because it didn't have a predictable melody--you could just experience it and go with the flow. (I find it hard to meditate without some kind of music or ambient sounds due to the tinnitus in my ears--the joy of being over the hill!)

I have the Chakra Suite CD by Steven Halpern, which I enjoy, and also Ancient Echoes by Halpern and Georgia Kelly (which I'm not as crazy about--I'm afraid a little of Halpern goes a long way.) Reiki: The Light Touch by Merlin's Magic is pretty nice, although there is a repeating melody throughout, so I have been searching for something that has those deep bass notes that are sustained while the more ethereal high notes sound over them, and this CD has them. Others have complained a bit about the wind chimes, but to be truthful I probably wouldn't have noticed them--that's kind of what I hear all the time anyway!

All in all a very soothing CD that I think I will be able to enjoy and meditate with quite often. There are four tracks so one could listen to just one for a quick bit of relaxation or the whole CD if time permits.

3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

With that ever-present catch in his plainspoken voice, Kevin Devine (Miracle of '86) is the epitome of the post-emo singer/songwriter. That vulnerability extends to the lyrics on his major label debut, following a well received trio of indie efforts. As the New York native explains, "These songs helped me figure out what I thought about the last year of my life." Backed by the Goddamn Band (Amy and Chris Bracco, Carey Brandenburg, Mike Skinner, Russell Smith, and Margaret White), the 26-year-old vows to "get his head on straight" in the country-tinged "Less Yesterday, More Today" and "prays for protection" on the spare "Heaven Bound & Glory Be." Clearly, there's some catharsis going on here. Highlights include the gentle pop of "Brooklyn Boy" and the Beatle-esque "Go Haunt Someone Else." Like the achingly vulnerable confessions of Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes and Chris Carrabba's Dashboard Confessional, Put Your Ghost to Rest is sure to receive a lot of love from the producers of shows like The O.C. and One Tree Hill--and tender souls throughout the land. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars beyond amazing.......2007-02-21

while not my favorite kevin record (make the clocks move holds my heart), this is a phenomenal record that shouldn't be passed by. it is a very stong major label debut and it's a shame that it isn't getting the praise & recognition it deserves.

2 out of 5 stars Only one good reason to buy this CD.......2006-04-21

This CD only has one redeeming quality and that is the inclusion of Paul Stookey's original recording of The Wedding Song...as for the rest of the music...just a waist of good CD space. I am normally much more forgiving on compilation recordings but ACK...save me now?????

I bought the CD for the one song which I absolutely HATE to have to do but this song is nearly impossible to find on CD so my money is not entirely waisted...........

3 out of 5 stars An OK CD.......2006-02-03

This CD is OK and I did like the fact that
The Wedding Song is on it.
I also was glad to finally find on amazon
"A Song For My Son" for the mother groom dance and
"A Song For My Daughter" for our father bride dance.
I could get these songs as singles or on
The New Wedding Traditions Volume I CD
Thanks amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars awesome!.......2002-09-15

It reminds me of why I love my husband so much and why I married him in the first place. Our love is from heaven and we beleive that God brought us together.

2 out of 5 stars I also only bought it for The Wedding Song.......2002-08-02

Paul Stookey's The Wedding Song (There is Love) is one of the most beautiful, reverent, appropriate songs to play at your wedding, and I'm glad I finally found the original version of it. However, the rest is really bad. Just, bad. If I was less moral I would just search for the MP3.

4 out of 5 stars Finally found it!.......2001-06-27

I have finally found the most elusive song. The Wedding Song(There is love) by Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary is a song I have been looking for in something other than vinyl for a long time. I havn't listened to the CD yet, but I know most of the songs, and they are good selections. If they weren't, I would buy it for the one track.
