5 out of 5 stars Hotter than Ever.......2007-03-17

Cheryl Lynn was discovered on a variety show "The Gong Show" to be exact, she stole the hearts of America then and she continues to be a force in the Music Industry today. Artists like Cheryl Lynn have never gotten the recognition that they deserve. Vocally she is one of the best female artists around. She is down to Earth and charasmatic. I wish that we lived in a world where your talent got you what you deserved but unfortunately we do not. This album is remarkable for it time back then when it was recorded and remarkable for now as a look back into a time when music meant something. A Great BUY, I loved it , well worth the money

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.....Cheryl...Baby ,, U still got it goin on.......2007-03-07

Cheryl Has got a voice out of this world...that range is out of this world....the way she sings is limitless she can do anything with her voice....she goes into high whistle registers and everything.....shes incredible...im now a complete commited Cheryl Lynn fan

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Cheryl Lynn Sampler.......2006-07-02

Sony / Legacy does a fine job with this compilation, BUT it could've been much better IMO!! Here's what I did to improve this CD (fans can do the same thing!! There's enough CD space available!)...
Include the FULL LENGTH VESRION of 'Encore' (the single mix has to GO!), and add the following RARE BONUS TRACKS...

16. 'At Last You're Mine' (fr.'Heavenly Bodies' SDTK 1985)
17. 'Steppin' Into The Night' (fr.'Armed & Dangerous' SDTK 1986).

The single version of 'Got To Be Real' is fine because it includes Cheryl's trademark "Soo-Hoo, Soo-Hoo" vocal break that's absent on the longer album version.
All in All, I'd recommend this CD to anybody that wants the best Cheryl Lynn compilation, but serious fans WILL want more!!
'The Best Of Cheryl Lynn, Vol.2' has been LONG OVERDUE for years, but you may have to make that one yourself until Rhino does the job!
Peace, SD
(of 'Chaka's World')

2 out of 5 stars where's the song at last you're mine.......2006-04-01

i have to say i love cheryl lynn this album is great but it's missing some very good song's she did a tune for the 1985 movie called heavenly bodies the song at last you're mine is an excellant track it peaked at #34 for a whole 10 weeks so i agree with the previous comment and the song fidelity so in order to be called a greatest hits all the song's should be in joel whitburns top r&b book

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2005-12-03

Does it get any better than this, you have Shake it up tonite, Got to be real,Encore, and Georgy Porgey with Gonna Be right.....Im sorry it gets no better than this, good cd and I love the other songs besides the ones I named get it a must buy if you like that 80's style RnB

Album Description

MightyREAL is a 15 volume CD compilation series that explores a very wild, yet musically elusive period in nightclubbing history: 1980 - 1988. This is when Disco, having recently been declared dead by disenchanted tastemakers, went underground to shop for a modern makeover. While on the down low, Disco was reworked into Dance Music . This didn't happen overnight. It was a spirited evolution supported nightly by a thriving BIG ROOM club scene.

By 1980, middle America was all Discoed out - they had enough and finally went home. Quickly replacing them was a fresh new crop of happy peppy party people. Actors, Models, Hustlers, Dealers, Millionairs, Gay men, Trannys, Celebutants, Fashion Victims, and the truly Groovy, converged on the dance floors of trendsetting American cities - the party far from over. MightyREAL is this soundtrack. Disco, Danceable New Wave, Electropop, HiNRG, Eurodisco, and pre-House, are all styles represented in MightyREAL. Here, many on CD for the first time ever, are the original, ultra rare, 12-inch hit singles that ruled the night. Fabulous used to have a sound - MightyREAL is it!

SHOWSTOPPERS is a collection of "up", bouncy, stand alone songs - the ones that managed to draw everyone on to the dance floor. Whether through an outstanding musical hook, a singer with a compelling story, or, good old fascinatin' rhythm; every track on SHOWSTOPPERS was a pleaser that reliably took the crowd just a little bit higher.

4 out of 5 stars A much more disco-oriented volume in this 80s series--including a 1970s classic.......2007-03-15

While this volume of the 80s dance mix series does not have as many big name arists as the other volumes so far, there is one standout track that makes this a must for collectibles. Ironically, it's NOT from the 80s! Instead, it's 1978's mega-gay club hit "Love is in the Air" by John Paul Young, in it's COMPLETE, ORIGINAL 12" mix.

Other tracks are a blend of 70s disco (McCoo & Davis, The Raes), NRG (Harlow, Rainey), and a couple of new wave synth dance (blancmange, hit list). So far, this is the most disco-flavored volume in the series...even many of the songs from the 80s sound like they missed the boat on the disco era. Personally, I would have preferred "A Little Love (keeps the doctor away)" by The Raes over the track included. It's just such a great track whose 12" version has not appeared on CD. And I also would rather this series stick to the NRG/new wave/synth pop sounds of the 80s instead of featuring so many 80s songs that would have sounded dated even in the 80s.

Track times are:

1. take off...harlow (9:53)
2. I can fly...rainey (7:55)
3. That's love that it is...blancmange (7:37)
4. Into the fire...hit list (5:43)
5. Souvenirs...voyage (6:29)
6. Love is in the air...john paul young (5:14)
7. Shine on silver moon...mccoo & davis (7:16)
8. Can we try again...tech-nique (5:09)
9. Don't turn around...the raes (5:24)
10. What a night...terry iten (6:44)
11. Manhattan shuffle...area code (6:00)

5 out of 5 stars UnBEATable.......2006-12-02

This is a collection of some of the best dance music ever recorded. These extraordinary 12" mixes haven't seen the light of day since your turntable went into storage. Take a journey back and listen to the music that had you and the dancefloor on fire. Highlights of this set include rarities such as Harlow's "Take Off," "Souvenirs" by Voyage, the smash radio hit "Love Is In The Air" performed by John Paul Young, the shimmering and out-of-print "Shine On Silver Moon" from Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., as well as the club sensation "Manhattan Shuffle" recorded by Area Code 212. Six more club classics round out this fabulous disc, which is the first in a series of fifteen volumes scheduled to be released from Centaur Records. If the rest are nearly as tight as Volume 1, we are in for a treat that's unBEATable!

5 out of 5 stars Do Turn Around!.......2006-02-28

This was a no-brainer purchase. When I saw "Don't Turn Around" by The Raes listed with its song length, I snatched this CD up. "Can We Try Again" is another song I'd given up on ever hearing again, but here it is. This CD has some well-known songs ("Souvenirs" is readily available on CD) and some not so known. "Take Off" is new to me. It features a bombastic show-tune sound not uncommon in gay dance music of the early 80's. Blancmange is a litle out of left-field in this collection, but still welcome. Great songs, excellent sound quality, full-length versions, and best of all, UNMIXED!! This is joyous music, with lyrics, harmony and emotion.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars When Music Had Real Talent.......2007-01-16

Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers are one of the most talented Production teams in the history of popular music. There are some Chic Albums that are a little better than others but they're all all worth listening to. "Real People" very good album. I love "I Got Protection", "You Can't Do It Alone", "I Loved You More" and many others.

"Tongue In CHIC" although good, I found this album by accident while making a trip to the record store in mid-1982. Lucky for me, it was a new release. To this day, I heard no singles or saw any advertisments promoting this particular Chic album. But I really enjoyed it nontheless. All the tracks are very good, but I really love Bernard's solo track "Sharing Love". "City Lights" is a very good track that could be a staple on Contemporary Jazz radio. The live track "Chic (Everybody say)" is a crowd pleaser that ends with an awesome Nile Guitar solo.

Both these albums should've been big sellers when they were first released but I guess some A&R people back then and today really have no idea what real talent sounds like. They Should listen to these 2 albums and see.

5 out of 5 stars It's Real For Real People !!!.......2007-01-06

I really love this group. There's never a flaw when it comes to Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards when creating such cool and classic soul type music. If you love real music without all of that cheap stuff you hear in the 2000 Millinium era, Then come on home to some real music from real people....CHIC !!!!

5 out of 5 stars The twilight of a great era.......2006-11-26

Chic defined disco. Producers Bernard Rogers and Nile Rogers, on bass and guitar respectively, and the original core line-up with Tony Thompson on drums, Alfa Anderson & Luci Martin on vocals and Raymond Jones & Andy Schwartz on keyboards, not to mention the Chic strings, formed the backbone to many a disco hit in their own name and hits by many other artistes including Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and Carly Simon. They were the sound of the late 70s. Their first three albums, 1977's "Chic", 1978's "C'est Chic" and 1979's "Risque" were as iconic as they were commerically successful. I still find them, almost 30 years on, as much fun to listen (and dance) to as I did back when they were originally released.

By 1980 when "Real People" was released, the disco wheels were already starting to come off. Hip-hop was muscling in, thanks in no small part to Chic themselves - after all without Chic, there would've been no "Rapper's Delight" - and black music was, in general, moving towards a more synthesiser based r&b sound. Chic ramped it up on this album though, making their sound heavier by bringing the bass and drums to the fore (they used the same formula on Diana Ross' "Diana", which they produced that same year). We hear Nile Rogers playing more lead guitar on this album where before he relied on rhythm playing for the most part. The keyboards are also brought forward, while the strings are taken back. It's a bolder sound, if you will.

To all intents and purposes, this was their last hurrah. I don't know if they scored any chart success with the album but songs like the instrumental opener "Open Up", "Real People", "I Got Protection", "26" and "You Can't Do It Alone" were a huge success with me and still are. It was never clear to me and still isn't, who exactly sang the lead vocal on "You Can't Do It Alone". I was convinced it was Luther Vandross who had done a lot of work with Chic but he's not credited anywhere. If it was either Edwards or Rogers, they did a very good job. It's one of Chic's best songs ever, in my opinion.

The follow-up, "Tongue In Chic" was less successful all round and while Rogers and Edwards try to keep things current, the old Chic magic is dying. The album isn't hideously bad or anything like that but it's not really worth listening to either except, maybe, for purely historical research reasons. They gave it their best shot but Chic and funk just don't mix.

The group released a few more forgettable albums and the two producers were beginning to go their separate ways. Edwards released at least one solo album but it disappeared without trace. Rogers solo work as well but scored big as a producer on his own, most notably with Madonna. The pair did eventually team up again though (sans Thompson) for Chic's 1992 release "Chic-ism". The songs "Your Love" and "Doin' That Thing To Me" reminded me of the heydays (and "One And Only One", "In It To Win It" and "M.M.F.T.C.F." showed promise) but again, I don't believe there was any chart success. A mediocre live album was recorded in 1996 and sadly, Bernard Edwards passed away shortly after, while touring with his group Power Station. The album was eventually released in 1999. Tony Thompson died in 2003.

However one feels about disco as a whole, I personally that Chic are a crucial part of musical history. The album "Real People" is a piece of history as it's really their last good album. This CD is therefore worth getting if only for the first half. After owning it on vinyl since the year it came out, I would've happily paid for "Real People" on CD on its own but I couldn't find it for love or money. Having "Tongue In Chic" isn't a bonus in any way but it doesn't take anything away from the CD either. I can always stop the disc after track 8 if I want to, no?

4 out of 5 stars Two of the best Chic albums together.......2006-11-10

As a fan of Chic, having this two albums on a single package and in CD is a pleasure for the ears. I had them on vinyl and I can only say they sound as great as I remembered them back on the day I first purchased the original albums.
Great production, writing and luxurious voices, songs full of ideas that have inspired musicians worldwide, a must for soul and funk lovers.
The only flaw... It'd be fantastic if they had included some extra cuts, 12" versions or demos.
I'll be waiting for more.

3 out of 5 stars I Think "Up Side Down" should have been on the Real People album by Chic.......2006-03-19

I always felt that, the song "Up Side Down" by Diana Ross should have been a Chic release. When I first heard it, I thought right away it was either Chic or Sister Sledge, because in my opinion Sister Sledge was just an extention of Chic. But, I guess they had to promote the "Diva" Miss Ross for a new sound and the 80's decade, so the rest is history.

The Real People album is alright, the only radio play from that album of coures (only single released) is "Rebels Are We" but I think the best track on that album (to me)is the instrumental "Open Up." I like the base and the guitar precussion break down of the song, I mean just a masterpiece!!! DAMN CHIC WAS BADD!!!!

2 out of 5 stars not very punchy.......2007-07-02

I was hoping to find the Original 12" version of Endless Road and I get one with sound effects and that Jet plane sound which they used a lot on so many remixes. Why don't they just use the ORIGINAL 12" mixes and save the effects for the later stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Some sought after mixes from the 80s--including Limahl.......2007-02-27

I'm looking forward to the release of this entire series, which promises to be 15 volumes. It's an eclectic collection of new wave, hi-nrg, and more R&B/soul dance tracks, but lovers of any of those styles will most certainly find some rare 12" versions remastered with great sound. For me, this volume is all about the TRUE U.S. 12" version of "Never Ending Story" by Limahl, which has never seen the light of day on CD before, always being passed up for the 5:25 extended mix which comes from I don't know what source--perhaps a european 12" single. It's also hot to have the 12" of "With All My Might" by Sparks, since that wasn't on the Sparks `12" mixes' CD, although it is not one of their best songs from this era. Also, this version, despite the disc promising all full length versions, fades about 15 seconds early compared to the original vinyl 12".

Overall, this volume doesn't have as much energy as the volume entitled "The Queens' Music I." Many of these tracks have slower BPMs. Also, since this is focusing on gay club classics, it makes some non-mainstream choices, like using a Narada Michael Walden track that is NOT his #1 Biillboard Dance Chart hit `Divine Emotions.' Hopefully, that will appear on later volumes, as well as more crucial dance tracks that music fans have been looking for. Track times:

5 out of 5 stars A Dancey Album from one of the most unheard singers.......2003-01-21

Jaki Graham best known for her only 80's hit Set Me Free sure proves her stuff with her 1994 release Real Life. From the pop tinged track You Can Count on Me For Love and the neat version of Rufus's hit Ain't Nobody Jaki sticks to dance the way it has to be. The wonderful Through Your Eyes is a tender ballad that was written by ex Doobie Brother Michael Mcdonald. Jaki also has the markings of a female Rick Astley as she shows on the only single Breaking Away. There is also the fun Shivers and the remake of Joyce Sims Come Into My Life. One of the reasons this album failed in the US is that at it's time of release Critque Records possibly went broke because you don't hear about this strange record label. But other than that a Dancey simply Dancey Album,
Enjoy,
Regis

5 out of 5 stars Some lesser-known R&B 70s songs.......2005-09-03

BMG has been releasing budget-priced "Real" box sets (Real 50s, Real 60s Country, Real 70s R&B, etc.) for several years now. They seem to all contain some genuine hits, but many other songs that either were never hits, or perhaps only regional hits. This box set is an example. There are songs on each disc that were big hits, but many more that weren't. Depending on how you look at it, this could be really good. Many of these lesser known songs are hard to get elsewhere and to be able to get them so cheaply is a deal. If however, you are only interested in big hits, then it isn't.
As far as the lesser-known songs go, some are pretty good, while others make it obvious why they are not remembered anymore.

Although the discs aren't labeled as such, there is a clear distinction of slower songs on the first disc, funk on the second, and disco on disc three.

This and the other "Real" box sets are recommended only to song collectors.

4 out of 5 stars Half fine disco-soul, half schlock.......2001-11-08

"Danger High Voltage" is Betty Wright's best album. Released as it was during the heyday of disco, it struggles against sounding dated, but it mostly shines. Betty's voice is one of the most solid of the period's female R&B singers, equally at home with tender ballads and surging dance tunes. The Toussaint-penned "Shoorah shoorah" is worth the price of admission, but there really isn't an unlistenable tune on the album. "This time it's real," on the other hand, is formulaic drivel, saddled with the worst production cliches of the period.I rate this four stars simply by ignoring "This time . . ." "Danger . . ." has the virtue of not having been overplayed, so Betty will sound fresh to your ear, unlike certain soul divas whose records deserve to be retired for a decade or so.

Below you will find a lengthy analysis of one song on this record "I want you back." If a single song can generate this kind of response, imagine the musical content of the entire 21 song record.

This song obliterates me. All the performances are incredible, including, to quote a friend, Michael's astounding, dumbfounding lead vocal.

The bass part sounds to me as if it came straight from the composer and arranger, but in any matter it's stuffed full with inventive ideas and super fonky! Given the calculated nature of this recording I would expect the arranger to have worked out the bass part note for note. The recording is a careful tapestry of many sounds that blend together to give the overall effect. The intro is a good example. The melody played by the bass is wonderful, but that melody is doubled by other instruments plus other things are woven around that melody, all indicating that the arranger wrote it all out note for note, the bass player serving to faithfully play the arrangement.

(Un)fortunately, any excellence in other portions of this song is obscured by Michael's unbelievable vocal. So much stuff, so much soul, so much range and flexibility. This vocal is way in the unbelievable range for any artist. But to come from a brand new 11 year old is, as my friend put it so well, "dumbfounding." (If this selection does not feature sound clips, look at other Jackson 5 records here on Amazon to hear the mentioned snippets.)
*He sounds a little hoarse and that increases the authority.
*The way he uses subtle, rhythmic vibrato on the word "me" in the phrase "won't you please let me back in your heart." (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The pause and surprise attack on the word "back" in the same phrase. (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The screaming with 100% authority.
*The drifting out of tune on the words "now, baby, yeah" in the phrase "Yes I do now, Oh oh baby, yeah yeah yeah yeah, Nah Nah no no." (Is there a technical term for this "drifting out of tune" vocal technique?) (Hear this on the Amazon snippet.)
*The authority and inventiveness and soul of the scatting on that same phrase and other scats in the song, including the various fun "Huh"s.
*The natural way he does the call and response sections with his brothers.
*The perfect timing all over the place, including jumping on some of the responses a little early.
*The exciting vocal build on the phrase "All I want, all I need, all I want, all I need!" with the fantastic atonal exclamation on the second "all I want."
And on and on. You could almost analyze every single note the guy sings. The fact that this guy could do this at 11 years old shows beyond any question that singing at this level requires talent given to you directly by God. You can't get it and you can't learn it. God either gave it to you or He didn't. My guess is that some genius worked out most of this stuff and recorded a track for Michael to sing along with during the session. I mean God given talent or not, Michael could not have come up with that stuff on his own, atonal, drifting out of tune, etc. But to even sing along and get these results....incredible. Plus, who was that singing genius that came up with all that stuff?

Other great parts of the song are the pervasive background vocals, the excellent call and response, the subtle, almost inaudible use of strings and background vocalizing, and the various guitar parts that weave an interesting tapestry.

One thing that I think is ground breaking but at the same time takes away from this arrangement is the calculated, restrained drum part. The drum part sounds completely canned, written out and played note for note. It's not exuberant; instead it's carefully restrained. To my ears it sounds too mellow for this joyous, raucous romp. But it's groundbreaking because this style of drumming became prevalent later and today in the 2000s you rarely hear any drum pyrotechnics in favor of a steady drum beat that does not break the flow of the song.

I wonder if all the vocals on this recording are Jacksons? I assume they are and that shows the talent of this family and the quality of this product.

Excellence and analysis of each individual part aside, the real value of this song, besides Michael's vocal which you simply can not retire to the background, is the overall sound. Each part is carefully calculated and blended to create a unique, exuberant, joyful, new, and instantly recognizable sound that's unlike anything that had been heard before. Though each part is worthy of study, perhaps the best way to listen to this song is with a 6 inch speaker through an AM radio in your car. And isn't that the way it was meant to be?
