5 out of 5 stars another great gerard schwarz cornet album.......2006-02-02

Once again I am amazed by a great Gerrard Schwarz album. I own all of his albums and bought this one right away. I think he is quite possibly the most musical trumpet/cornet player ever to play alongside Maurice Andre. This album is great, and there are many more albums featuring these great players that should be re-released, such as "Festival of Trumpets" with the new york trumpet ensemble. Nontheless this album is a must pickup for any music enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Normal Repertoire....but EXCELLENT!.......2005-09-27

I didn't know what to make of this CD before I bought it, and still haven't totally figured it out as I was listening to it, but I did find it very enjoyable. "Turn Of The Century Cornet Favorites", as this CD is titled, seems to be a misnomer...I didn't recognize one selection among the 19 tracks contained, but that may be the greatest appeal of this CD for any cornet player, brass player, or aficionado desiring some relatively unknown, but well-played, music from a bygone era. As I was listening to the CD, images of the turn-of-the century came to mind. I imagined sitting near a gazebo, while a community band and soloist performed on a summer's eve, or perhaps at a pavilion at the World's Fair. Having played french horn and other brass instruments in my youth, I was familiar with the names of Clarke and Arban (who wrote a celebrated Cornet Method still used today in many colleges and conservatories), and some of their better known compositions. But I have to admit, this materials was all new to me. For anyone wanting to supplement their brass CD collection with recordings not found anywhere else, this CD will do very nicely indeed. The playing by cornet player Gerard Schwarz in amazing, with technique to burn and a beautiful tone to match. Kudos also goes to the outstanding accompaniment he receives from the Columbia Chamber Ensemble. Also, please see my review of "Footlifters" (another winner), part of the Brass Masterworks series on Sony. Keep them coming.

5 out of 5 stars This is Music.......2005-09-20

You would be hard pressed to find any recording that exhibits greater qualities of lightness, motion, and beautiful phrasing than this one. Add to that Schwartz's beautiful tone and flawless technique, and you have the perfect model of how these cornet solos should sound. I write as a trumpet player who has played quite a bit in this style.

5 out of 5 stars The phattest polemic ever.......2005-07-15

Awesome album. From the raps to the beats it exudes a revolutionary vibe. The bloody kind. The lyrics are dropped with a style and content which gives a big middle finger to the Bush Admin and the media. A broad range of styles of both raps and beats.

If you're a fan of Company Flow (Fantastic Damage) you'll like this. If you like to hear a little more punk and politics in your hip hop, this is the one for you.

I was lucky enough to score the promo which has the instrumentals of each track on it as well. These beats are 'next' and slamming. You want sounds of war? Here it is, work those Howitzer's, yo!

5 out of 5 stars Bleak, Apocalyptic, Claustrophobicý.and undeniably brilliant.......2003-10-28

If you think rap, says nothing constructive, and only seems concerned with `Getting Paid', here's a album to change your preconceptions (provided you can understand what's going on!!??). This is an "Anti-War", "Anti-Bush" album, that doesn't pull any punches (the sleeve notes inside the Cd case say "Fu*k Bush"...and my favourite: "In Texas...a Village is missing an idiot"). Rapper "Big Jus" calls into question Bush's ability to govern himself, let alone a country. Challenges America's gung-ho approach to war, and how it ultimately affects us all, and is this a war on terrorism??, or a money making exercise??? Big Jus especially urges to be aware of governmental lies, and deliberate misinformation...asking people to question what they are being told. But more probingly he details the greatest threat to mankind....which is `Man' himself, who will ultimately destroy all that is good. This isn't an album to relax to....raps are delivered at breakneck speed (impossible to distinguish what's going on, and picking out sentences is your best hope), stark, bleak, apocalyptic beats & sounds (although surprising inventive), gives the vocals all the room they need to become the focus of the album, and with such insightful, expressive & thought provoking lyrics, the effect is akin to digesting several large bursts of information simultaneously. And yet, in spite of this, manages to be an album that will (and you can quote me on this), unveil something new, something unheard previously, something inspirational with every listen, for several years.

5 out of 5 stars *****.......2003-07-23

I'ma keep this short and sweet. This album is incredible, from start to finish, mindblowing lyrics, and bugged out beats. Standout tracks are "super pretzel diplomacy", and "brave new world". DO NOT SLEEP, if you appreciate quality underground hip hop pick this up ASAP

4 out of 5 stars Downtempo DC band an engaging, ego-fee, acoustic adventure.......2003-07-11

Aubergine 3's music embraces the world in a way that embodies Washington, D.C.,: international, polyglot, subdued, informed. Aubergine 3 play downtempo funky techno-influenced jazz. The music is both steely and soft-toned. It is intelligent enough to play while sitting alone, but ego-free enough to put on at a party for a mellow vibe. Because both the left and right side of the brain are stimulated, it is music you can take anywhere.

Live, Aubergine 3 conjure the music of Downtempo Disco Dons like Thievery Corporation, Jazzanova and Truby Trio. But, like other instrumentalist downtempo bands such as Fila Brazillia and Red Snapper, the canned-quality of DJ spinning is promoted to fresh organic-grade juiciness.

And I expect that this group of musicians - John Henry Dale on electro-organic drum kits, Chauncey Canfield on all manner of organs and synths and Dajando Smith thudding out baseline hieroglyphs - to become even better in the years to come.

The album isn't perfect by any stretch. The snare drums sound ragged, the synths wander onto the precipice of muzac from time to time, the bass plodding at times and the vocals are a little too close to ground covered by Thievery and countless others. But these are minor nicks in an otherwise streamlined cruiser.

The songs are:

Sultro-Matic Principle -- At first, a bass line. The a rain-drop synth loop and the drums kick in soft. The musicians introduce themselves and Rachel Leber voice slides in on an ethereal cloud of synth cushioning. The album starts slow, gliding.

Tres Bolivares - The album's best track - featuring a sitar and flute duel over a driving middle-easterneseque groove that ebbs and flows.

Panderthal Redux - A basic downtempo tune - good but not remarkable in any way.

World 6 - A happy melody with an AIRy sci-fi vibe, nice use of percussion.

Jinn - Find a better bass line for this song - it's good in principle, but a little too simple for my taste

As Wide As the World - This song has a real bossanova feel, similar to how Thievery Corp. was influenced by Stan Getz/Charlie Byrd.

Spank le Disco - Ah yes, French shopping music a la daft punk complete with French lyrics and French fromageyness. Not exactly my tasse du the, but the bassist does funk it up royal.

Lando's Lament - I can just see it, Billy Dee chilling' up in his cloud fortress with a forty oz. On this track Aubergine 3 dare to pimp strut.
Cloud Forest - It washes in on an avalanche of synth and then the drums and bass come in - locked together. A really tight number.

Don Pisco - A funky little ditty.

Vapour - At first its close to muzac - I think you can hear this kind of stuff on smooth-jazz radio, but then it mutates a bit as it goes along - with some nice production effects - but this could basically find itself on a 1980's George Benson album

The Pickup - The album's coda, and suggestion. The name says it all - music for persons to get-down to - awesome bass work on this track.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile, intelligent, and a necessary look see and listen!.......2003-06-24

I really enjoyed this cd and its wide range of moods! When I listen to music I seek inspiration and visualizations. I don't know a lot of musical terminology that is current and up to date with what's "in" these days, but this cd took me many different places physically and spiritually. I love all kinds of music-particulary "old school" and rock and roll. This has something new and some real soul to it-good to dance to or just relax to. Great musicians-or mixologists whatever they call it nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing CD from DC!.......2003-05-02

You can't keep still listening to this CD -- it is finger tappin' head bobbin' hip swingin' funky! I don't know a thing about electronic jazz genres, but I know this group can groove like nobody's business! Aubergine's music is warm and liquidy, breezy and soulful, exotic and easy - all at once. I look forward to many more releases from this very talented group.

5 out of 5 stars In All Things Modulation.......2003-04-12

If you have ever felt like the overly sequenced and mechanized sound that defines so much electronica is a little too cold for your senses and the incessant noodling and "improvisation" of so much jazz and jam music mines the depths of your patience, then check out this release. In a way I have yet to see with other artists, this album combines the best of both of these wide-ranging musical genres. It's sonically rough around the edges at points, creamy smooth at others. It is a great dance party album, but you could also just sit down, jazz cigarette in hand, and chill reflectively in headphone land.
If this is their first offering, I'd say we have much to look forward to from this welcome addition to DC's electronic music community.

Mille Plateaux is a peculiar little label that never seems to disappoint. This fourth installment of their Modulation and Transformation series is a great example of what the label can offer its listeners. This time the compilation includes 3 full CDs of experimental audio. The usual suspects are present, including the likes of Gas, DJ Spooky, Curd Duca, Achim Wollscheid, Steel, Kerosene, Freiland... the list goes on and on. Perhaps one of the highlights of the entire decade in electronic music is the very first track on this compilation, "Genrecide" by Terre Thaemlitz. Its sublime hints of melody and atmospheres of thin drones, coupled with the usual snippets of voiceovers (this time buried in the mix) set the mood perfectly for the spirit of experimentation and the high caliber of music to follow through all 3 discs. Also, Panacea's offering is a highlight, much more ferocious and less accessible than his usual drum and bass tracks, perhaps a sign of what was to follow with his later works. Highly recommended: you will not find this volume of material, in quantity or quality, for this price. Truly a great value!

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential jazz piano.......2003-12-20

"Modulation" is the creation of a young Boston-based jazz pianist whose creative gifts are apparent in both execution and composition. If the title track doesn't become a jazz standard, I would have to put that down to inadequate exposure because its melody ranks up there with the best of them.

Barkan has sufficient self-effacement to create a CD with a third of its content written by other better-known composers even while his own compositions are so good. In fact both my wife and I prefer his treatment of "Waltz for Debby" over Bill Evans' own version on his classic live album.

There is a well-rounded mix of tempos on this hour-long production and adequate time given to both the bassist and the drummer. "Modulation" stands as an excellent showcase for the jazz trio format. This artist deserves to go far and I hope we'll be hearing a lot more of him in the future.

      5 out of 5 stars Creative!.......2003-10-26

Wow! How exciting is this? So many original pieces and some of them with a sensual Brazilian form. I enjoy grooving on this CD alone or sharing it with friends at dinner. Highly recommended!

We placed an earlier CD by this artist to be played by the guests in our lodge rooms. We hear it being played often when passing by the rooms and poeple enthuse about it.
This new recording goes one better. The trio work together well and some of the tunes are original and fascinating. Straight ahead jazz in form but surprising in content. We recommend!

        Album Description

Rich, resonant, beautiful, and intelligent, these compositions reveal Mathieu's deep understanding of the harmonic (and melodic) essence of modal and tonal music as well his fascination with mbira-type cross-rhythms.

William Allaudin Mathieu (b. 1937) is a pianist, composer, teacher, recording artist, and author. He has composed a variety of chamber and choral works and made numerous solo piano recordings. He has written three books on music — The Listening Book; The Musical Life; and Harmonic Experience: Tonal Harmony from Its Natural Origins to Its Modern Expression.

Allaudin was a disciple of North Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath for 25 years. He studied African music with Nubian musician Hamza El Din, jazz with William Russo, and European classical music with Easley Blackwood.

In the 1960s, he spent several years as an arranger/composer for Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington, and was the musical director for the Second City Theater in Chicago (which he helped found) and for the Committee Theater in San Francisco. In the 1970s, he served on the faculties of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Mills College. In 1969 he founded the Sufi Choir, which he directed until 1982.

The past two decades Allaudin has devoted to composition, performance, recording, teaching, and writing from his home near Sebastopol, California.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More experimental than I particularly care for.......2000-05-29

Still, it's mostly quite listenable. On some tracks, there's even the novelty of a "beat". I shouldn't curse this with an experimental label, given that anyone who should actually seek this title must dance to television static. All the trademark electronic noises are here, intricately and in some cases pleasantly assembled. There's nothing really exciting, though. For all one may care, every track might have been done by the same artist. All in all, a fairly good deal for two discs (though I only bought it 'cause it was cheap), but beware these knob twisters and their unorthodox music!
