Amazon.com essential recording
With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
love this album! so funky and catchy!.......2007-07-16
quick review: Rhcp is one of the best bands ever! if you love their funk/funk get this album! it mixes funk, hip hop, and rock for an awesome, original sound! the best are: suck my kiss, give it away, blood sugar sex magik, under the bridge, sir psycho sexy. but almost every song sounds good! a rare feat for artists! they took their time to create this great album! if you noticed when they do a hits album, most of the songs come from this album b/c the songs are so good!
ALL YOU NEED.......2007-07-15
Everyone likes saving money right? Ok, here's how to save money if you like the RHCP, buy this album from their catalogue only! If you must listen to the new stuff, turn on any popular radio station for no longer than ten minutes and get your fix. This album falls into the very exclusive "masterpiece" club. Every and I mean EVERY song on this album is perfect. The songs flow in unity from start to finish. This album sounds like nothing before it and nothing after it, besides every RHCP release which follows. Which brings me back to saving money. Now there's nothing wrong with the RHCP releases after this album there all good but only one or two songs from every album stands up to the complete Blood Sugar album. Its almost as if they release new albums to suck in new young fans that haven't heard the album before the new one. This is the RHCP at their very best and all one needs to satisfy the RHCP bug.
hold up.......2007-07-13
The person below me is an absolute ignorant a-hole. 311 has zero artistic value when in comparison with RHCP. Call me when 311 writes ANYTHING with the merit that even begins to touch "Under the Bridge." Have you even heard of something called chord progression? because I'll tell you one thing, 311 sure hasn't.
And I can't believe that you even have audacity to bring up lyrics. First of all, most of the songs are funk rock, Thusly, it's party music: i.e. Sir Psycho Sexy, which is brilliant in its own way. Secondly, the songs that do call for different lyrical composition come through in every which way. Are you seriosuly trying to tell me that 311 has a song more meaningful than "Power of Equality?" Do you even listen to the lyrics? I think not.
Lyrical abilities aside, you must realize that you are basically taking Chad Smith, and extremely respected rock drummer, John Frusciante, hands down one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and Flea, (debatably)THE greatest rock bassist of all time, and saying that what many people believe is their greatest piece of work in BSSM, is garbage. I just hope you didn't listen one time and write that bull****. If so, your review is all the more less credible because you fail to realize one of the most key compenents to good music; the fact that it grows on you and it takes more than one listen. You just can't absorb it all in one take.
I have nothing against 311, they're not a bad band. But it's hard to give you any respect when you rip a band like Nirvana at the end of your review. I understand you are entitled to your opinion, but you have to see that you are contradicting yourself when millions of people love BSSM and Nevermind and you just shut that down like you are some kind of all knowing god.
Anyways, just to add some of my own opinion, this is my favorite album of all time and will always be. I feel like although the chili peppers have moved on and continue to make world class music they will never top what they did in 1991. Just too much emotion, attitude and musical ability when into that album. They went into it with something to prove and just ripped it up. I think Stadium Arcadium is definitely a step down for them. It's a great record but it lacks some of the artistic maerit that they had in their last four albums (minus OHM).
Way overrated.......2007-06-24
First off, this isn't an apology to Brian, because you don't deserve it, you ignorant A-hole.
The Peppers have their own sound, but it's too bad they suck. THe band (besides Anthony) are very talented, but the playing just don't go together very well. I like 311 better because they play funk better, they don't seem to try to force everything, everything just goes together so well, their synergy is just great.
Red Hot Chili Peppers suffer because they just don't seem to fit together. No doubt the whole band is very talented, but they go together, they just dont' seem to blend as well. Anthony is a cheesy vocalist. The lyrics on here are mostly on the same topic, sex and drugs, which gets old after a while. He can't sing either. His later lyrics cleary were a step up from the pointless lyrics he does during this time.
Basically, I dont like their sound, although the bass is something to check out. It's not worth it to me, I find nothing special about this band, although I give them points for talent and originality.
4.5/10
UPDATE: HAHAHA!!!!!!
The retard who replied, the way you judge people on a silly band shows how stupid you are. Think about that one for a second. I think 311 is great, and I am not going to say what I think, the last thing I want to do is make a ________ reply like you did, and become everything I hate, people who spend their time insulting because they upset you and your precious RHCP (I'm only writing this to embaress you).
IF I was somebody who you met on the street and we had a converstation, and I said the same, you would actually walk away on one silly opinion?
Call them ignorant, bash them, explode and blatantly insult somebody. Well, you could say that it's just the internet, but some people treat internet insults the same way. YOu don't have feelings anyway (hey I sound just like you!)
I'm not mad that you bashed 311, I don't get mad about a silly musical opinion. It's your opinion. I don't call you ignorant over one band opinion, because I actually think that you could be a person with a good mind, that's smart. Music is music. How many ignorant people can listen to Classical music, millions of different rock, jazz, blues, world music, electronic, and more? Oh well, your a closeminded @$$hole (let's make a retarded insult just to get through the night! *sarcasm*).
Excuse me while I listen Wagner. I'll find layers and depth of music that you never will.
Your the ignorant one (here I go again! *sarcasm*).
a mix of old and new.......2007-06-16
What I like best about this album is that you get a peak of their past funk style and their jump over the threshold into rock. It has every element of their many layered canvas. No band is more honest or true to themselves as this band. Although 'Under the Bridge' became their signature song at the time, it pays to listen to every song before this classic. Anything after Naked in the Rain, which follows UTB is a bit more graphic and may need to be monitored for younger audiences. My favorite is the funky rock tune, Righteous and the Wicked which proceeds immediately to the best version (studio versus live) of 'Give it Away'. You will not be sorry. Any new RHCP fan must appreciate their past to love their present.

Deserving of a Good Buzz (These sweet honeys rock!) 3 & half stars.......2006-12-07
When the hit-making team of Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown to form Hot Wax, a subsidiary of Invictus Records, Honey Cone, a trio of female vocalists, was the first act signed to their label. These three women were not new to the music scene: Edna Wright (lead singer on most songs) sang with her sister Darlene Love and as a member of Ray Charles's Raelettes; Shellie Clark was an Ikette with the Ike & Tina Turner Review; Carolyn Willis was a member of the Girlfriends. The group's most recent claim-to-fame was the use a sample of the beginning of "Innocent Til Proven Guilty" in rapper Common's "Testify".
SOULFUL SUGAR: THE COMPLETE HOT WAX RECORDINGS is a nearly-chronological collection of 45 tracks on 2 discs, including alternate versions of 4 songs. The recordings are from their 4 albums and 11 singles, recorded 1969-1973 (plus 2 songs by "Honey Cone featuring Sharon Cash", from 1976). Discs are packaged in a back-to-back flip-open two-disc clear jewel case. Booklet (which is a 2x4 fold-up) includes a discography, insufficient track & recording personnel information, an essay by Peter Doggett, combined transcripts from two separate phone interviews by David Nathan with Shellie Clark and Carolyn Willis, and several uncaptioned photos. The sound quality is good.
There are some great recordings here. I particularly like the social commentaries of "Sunday Morning People" (about hypocritical church folk) and "When Will It End" (and "Are You Man Enough, Are You Strong Enough?" should be the theme for Maury Povich's paternity announcements that a disappointed man is "NOT the father!"). I also like "Sittin' on a Time Bomb (Waitin' for the Hurt to Come)" and the afore mentioned "Innocent `Til Proven Guilty". The two 1976 songs (tracks 16 & 17 on disc 2) have more of a disco sound (especially the enjoyable "Somebody Is Always Messing Up a Good Thing") and seem out-of-place in this compilation.
This is a great album for anyone who appreciates Soul, Funk, and R&B music, particularly of the 1970s variety. Holland-Dozier-Holland are credited as writing a few songs, but since they were legally forbidden to do so because of ongoing disputes with Motown, some speculate that more of their compositions were used and simply credited to others.
Other songs include "Son of a Preacher Man" (Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin), "Aquarius" ("The Age of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In"), "Stay in My Corner" (Patti LaBelle), "Who's Lovin' You" (Jackson 5), and a 6+ minute "Ooo Baby Baby" (Smokey Robinson, Sylvester). Discs include over 70 minutes of music each.

Sweeter than the Honey in a Honey Cone!.......2004-04-29
These ladies are no joke and they mean business! The harmonies and lead singer Enda Wright exemplify great music showmanship. This is a must-have for any person who enjoys girl groups. The Stand-Outs on this set to me are: Wants Ads, Stick-Up, One Monkey Don't Stop No Show, The Day I Found Myself, V.I.P. and Ooh Baby, Baby. Check 'em out!
Two "Monkeys" Make This A Show!.......2004-02-05
This album is worth the price just to hear "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show Part 2" on CD. Yes, that's part TWO, I said.
The top 15 single "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show Part 1" was the last major hit for Honey Cone. If you liked that one you'll LOVE Part 2, because the producers just have so much fun with exploring the theme instrumentally. It should really be called "Ode to a Bass Line", because they take that catchy little bass line that propels the chorus of the song and just do everything they can think of with it, and the fun they had just pours out of your speakers. If you owned Honey Cone's "Soulful Tapestry" album you'll have heard this ingenious exercise in musical fun. It was also the flip side of the single.
Okay, there *are* other reasons to buy this collection. Two versions of their biggest hit, "Want Ads", grace this collection, one longer version and one the same as the single version. Other reviewers say this sounds like the Jackson Five but I don't hear it. It's just a beautiful song with a melancholy mood blended into an upbeat tune, and is simply extraordinary. The follow-up, however, does sound like J5 - that's called "Stick Up", and it rips its arrangement right out of the grooves of "I Want You Back".
As for the rest of the songs, if you listened to R&B radio in the early Seventies you'll know a lot more of them, because some of the ones that failed on the pop charts were big R&B hits. For me, this album's big discovery was "Sittin' On A Time Bomb", probably their best single ever. I was shocked to hear something this good that never became a hit on any chart.
ALL of the Honey Cone ever recorded is probably TOO much Honey Cone, but the price is right and you can just program your CD player to play the ones you like. The sound is superb. Extensive liner notes are nice, as are the interviews with two of the members, until Carolyn Willis opens her mouth and says that "One Monkey" ruined their career because it was "too clever". I beg to differ. A Top 15 hit doesn't ruin anyone's career, and if it had been TOO clever, it wouldn't have been a hit, would it? What wrecks a career are bad songs and bad attitudes, and Willis quitting when the FOLLOW-UPS to "One Monkey" flopped only proved that one monkey COULD stop a show, as Honey Cone never really recovered from her leaving. But blaming one of the best and most successful songs of their career for the collapse of the group just doesn't make sense.
All that aside, yeah, get this thing. It's a lot of fun. The vocals are pure Soulful Sugar, as the title suggests. Sweet voices with great tunes.

"Sugar" by any other name would be ..........2006-06-14
This is the London production of the Jule Styne musical "Sugar".
The story was taken from the 1959 Marilyn Munroe Movie, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - but the songs were all original Styne/Merrill numbers.
"Sugar" (the character played by Munroe in the original movie) is a musician who encounters two fellow female musicians. The catch is that they are really men, who have adopted female disguises in a desperate attempt to escape gangsters who want to eliminate them because they have witnessed a gangland slaying.
Much of the appeal of the original movie comes from Miss Munroe's "sexy innocence" - and the fine score by Adolph Deutsch. The musical is frankly not really Jule Styne at his best, although the score does have its moments. Tommy Steele is a bit of an acquired taste too.
One for collectors who want to have their Jule Styne complete (especially if you can't find a copy of the Broadway Version - "Sugar") rather than something you'd rush out to buy, really, but enjoyable enough if you can put Marilyn Munroe and the original (and infinitely better) movie out of your mind.
One of my favorites!.......2001-06-20
This is one of those hidden treasures, a great soundtrack, buy it, it's great!

the best rap group ever........2003-04-04
The original, the best rap group ever. They do everything, from smooth melodies and romance that sweeps the fine ladys (not biatches) off there feet to great old school hip-hop. This is when rap wasn't all about thugin and bling blingin and making up new words cous you cant rhyme (Jay-Z says cant think of a word to go there? just make one up) when it was about having fun, staying in school and NOT doing drugs, rappin about eating dinner, about your color TV, etc. I personally blame Dr. Dre for the downfall of rap, what the hell does killing people have to do with rhyming? Now its just another extension of the man, they make the money and give it right back to Cadillac and Bentley. Check out the Sugerhill vs. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, it's a classic! Sure, I was born 2 years before this record was released, and im from Minnesota, but it's timeless and universal. I just wish more of there music was still available. The other reviewer doesn't know what he's talking about. This is real old school style.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome energy and musicianship!.......2004-09-18
I have listened to this album quite a few times since I got it and yet I still can't say what other band it sounds like. The music and lyrics are extremely accessible - rock/pop at it's best! - yet it is so fresh that it can't be lumped into any of the typical music categories. I've seen the reviews that reference Lenny Kravitz, David Bowie, U2, Prince, etc. but I don't think this album sounds like any of those artists. However, it definitely has the quality and energy of these great artists. It seems like Roy Ashen has some cool stuff going on - you must check out the music for yourself!
Very Good CD.......2004-09-13
Very Good music! I saw an article in a magazine on the CD and had not heard of him before this week. Beautiful and intense music. The CD has been playing in my car all weekend.
Awesome songs - great CD!.......2004-09-11
This is a great CD with top notch songwriting. If you're new to Roy Ashen's music...I guess I'd describe him as a cross between bowie, prince and maybe dashboard confessional. I was particularly impressed with the songs Holding On, I Miss You, and Gasoline. A great CD by an up & coming star!
Amazing Songwriter - rockin' songs!.......2004-09-08
Heard about Roy in a music magazine and I've been looking for the new CD. The songs are awesome - fans of Bowie, Dashboard and Prince will probably all find something valuable here. The lyrics are really good too. Great voice. Refreshing to hear new music of this quality!
