Album Description

This is the debut album from an act that perfectly blends the lush sounds and emotion of classic new wave/new romantic music with modern synthpop. The song "Wake" received a lot of positive attention both online and from the previously released CD single. The album lives up to the single in every aspect.

4 out of 5 stars Smashes.......2005-10-28

I, unlike the other reviewer, like the whole sound of this cd. I would highly recommend this cd. I would however NOT recommend their Parallel Universe cd. I think the vocals are really bizarre on Parallel Universe compared to Ashes Ashes. If you like De/Vision and others like them, you would like this cd. I bought it just from hearing one song on a mix cd. I am glad I bought it!

3 out of 5 stars The vocals detract.......2005-07-09

Hrm. I frankly envy those who can listen to this album without being bugged by the vocals, because there's a lot of good stuff going on here. Unfortunately, while I can excuse the relative blandness of Jason's voice, the fact that he regularly goes off-key is a lot harder to get past.

Leiahdorus could be right up there with Mesh, Iris, De/Vision, et al. on the forefront of the dark-synthpop revival, but I don't see it happening with this particular singer.

4 out of 5 stars Ashes Ashes is a wonderful debut . . . .......2005-04-28

I was first introduced to Leiahdorus and this album by a friend, and it quickly became one of my favorites and most played. It's is piano-driven, light synth-pop with some some wonderfully catchy tunes and solid lyrics. I really like Jason's vocals, it may take some getting used to, but it adds a uniqueness which adds the enjoyment of the album. The songs range from soft ballads (Dissection of Man) to the upbeat and very danceable (Jupiter). You can tell a lot of emotion and feeling was put into this album, and with each listening it becomes more and more enjoyable. Ashes Ashes has recently had a new printing which has changed the CD's artwork quite a bit. I really like the new artwork and definitley makes this an album to buy, and not just download off the web.

I highly recommend it and am eagerly awaiting a follow-up from Leiahdorus.

5 out of 5 stars The most refreshing thing I've heard...........2005-01-05

I downloaded "Indigent" from here and wow. It blew my mind.

The music style is electronic/piano rock. It's kind of new wavey stuff, but not. It's extremely unique! The vocals are beautiful, and the songs all flow freely, yet in one direction. It's very relaxing and beautiful to listen to.

This is a gem in my eclectic collection of music. It's sits very high on my list.

This group is coming out with a new CD very soon. I was surprised since I just bought this CD and have a brand new one to look forward to!

5 out of 5 stars One of the brightest new synthpop stars.......2004-08-05

A lot of synthpop stuff that's being put out isn't produced overly well or the singing isn't up to par. Leiahdorus puts those weaknesses to rest. The piano and haunting vocals on Wake, retro-synth So Much, hard driven pop of Jupiter, and the brooding Come Around are just a few of the incredible tracks.

Like synthpop? Miss new wave?

Get it!

Album Description

Fried Glass Onions--Memphis Meets The Beatles is a celebration of The Beatles and of the city that greatly inspired and influenced them. Most of these interpretations have a definitive, identifiable Memphis twist. Daddy Mack Orr's "Get Back" is a stripped-down, blues rendition. Bob Simon & Eddie Harrison's "Two Of Us" sounds like vintage Sam & Dave from the Stax Records era. Most of these versions are either R&B or soul infused, although funk treatments of "The One After 909" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" take the groove a little deeper. The Memphis All-Stars version of "Drive My Car" is absolutely unstoppable and demonstrates the undeniable potency of a four-piece soul band. These 14 tracks represent a diverse pool of contemporary Memphis talent offering fresh versions of Beatles songs that will not disappoint even the most discerning Beatles fan. At the same time, proponents of classic Memphis music will hear Beatles songs like never before and will delight in knowing that Memphis music is alive and well. All of this material was recorded and mixed between June 24 and November 24, 2004, specifically for this unique tribute CD.

5 out of 5 stars Funking with the Beatles.......2007-04-21

I saw this band last night at the Gibson Guitar Factory Lounge in Memphis and was spellbound (and I am not easily entertained). I really expected to be bored but was awed. If you get the rare chance to see this collection of Memphis' best talent live, don't miss it, you'll have a ball. These selections are not note for note covers (and what good would that be?) but reworked Beatles smothered in Memphis funk. Some of the arrangements are startling innovative (ever heard a psychedelic flute or a gospel version of All You Need is Love?) and all are fun. The musicianship throughout is first rate. The cds are not the same as seeing Fried Glass Onions live but all 3 cds belong in any Beatle fan's collection. There are a few misses across the 3 cds--none of the cuts make you run to the player to skip them--but you'll return to the real jewels in these 3 cds for years to come. Get all 3, you won't regret it. By the way, I have no connection to this band and have never before bothered to write a review.

4 out of 5 stars Happiness is...this take on the Beatles.......2007-04-10

Beatles fans are in for a treat when they load this disk into their CD players. Classic Beatle songs are sung & played as never imagined before. Listen to a soulful, haunting version of Blackbird by Jackie Johnson,or Two of Us getting the Sam & Dave treatment (by Simon & Harrison),a cool funked up rendition of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window (Matt Tudor)is lots of fun. Old Brown Shoe, The One After 909, and others are also all here on Volume One. In my opinion, there are a couple of misses. Notably Get Back is especially hard on the ears. Way overall though, if you love the Beatles, and can handle these twisted variations, by all means go for it. You won't experience a hard day's night listening to it.

Alas, I can't recommend Volume 2, but I haven't heard #3 yet, so there is still hope for more great music.

5 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise.......2007-01-23

this CD would have been low on my radar except for some enthusiastic reviews from previous consumers. they were right that any beatles fan who likes good music would like this CD. having been to the rock and soul museum in memphis recently, i got the other two in this set, volumes 2 and 3. the first one is the best and the first to buy. i think this CD is a definite winner.

4 out of 5 stars Most Are Great.......2006-03-15

Although there are a few cuts that I am not thrilled with, over all, this album adds some interesting cuts to my library, originally recorded by the best band of all time. It does have the Memphis feel throughout. Unfortunate that a few of the bands should have stayed in the lounges.

Album Description

The popular "Synthpop Club Anthems" series continues, with another yearly installment. This CD highlights some of the ultra-club-friendly synthpop anthems from the 2003-2004 releases, including some of the most popular acts in the scene like De/Vision, Cosmicity, Real Life, and T.O.Y.

The "Synthpop Club Anthems" series appeals to some fans of classic synthpop along the lines of New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, etc. but also intends to show the genre's forward-looking trends, fusing together different electronic dance elements from futurepop to trance. This is synthpop that can appeal to dance club fans in pretty much any scene, blending pounding electronics with catchy melodies and memorable, meaningful lyrics (a key ingredient to modern synthpop).

Synthpop is by no means a stale, stagnant sound that does nothing but re-live the sounds of the 80's, but instead moves forward, always expanding, evolving, and reaching out to new fans. "Synthpop Club Anthems 3" continues to extend that reach. Old fans will love it, and new listeners will pay attention!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Volume 1.......2005-02-20

When Volume 1 of this series was originally released I pick it up. Back then it had a different cover. I'm a child of the 80s so remixes are something I like. I was largely disappointed. I had heard that this volume would be worth picking up (in other words: better than the first one) and they were right.

Where the first volume really was specifically synthpop that might be played at a synthpop or 80s retro flavored club many of the tracks on this volume could be played in any mainstream club and be enjoyed. They are focused on the beats and rhythm: the stuff that makes you want to get up and dance (or go running or whatever you feel like doing whenever you feel that extra energy from the music).

The disc starts off very well with a new track from Real Life (an 80s favorite back with an updated sound for the new millennium) that is just as good as the album track but with more of a club flavor. It's a nice way to start off the CD but my favorite track is track number two. Syrian's "Space Overdrive" is a new favorite. It has a hint of the true synthpop/80s bent but definitely geared up for the club.

The album stays strong from there (other favorites are from T.O.Y and Daybehavior) with the exception of the Alien#Six13 track which sounded a bit flat to me. The final track from Intuition is good but not as good as the original, in my opinion.

Despite a little falter towards the end this album is definitely worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Dance Mix Compilation.......2005-01-26

A Different Drum is a great Record Label, which doesn't just sign Acts because they are commercial. They sign great musicians and try to provide it for everyone who wants to listen. One of the things they do regularly release compilations which have different themes, this being the latest (Volume 3) of the Club Anthems. You will love this if you like to boogey at the Club (particularly Trance), or if you like the extended remixes of some of the great bands of the 80's. Or if you just like to bound around your living room while singing along to catchy songs.

1) Real Life - Oblivion (Nevarakka Mix) - Back to the 80's. Real Life were famous for the superb Send Me an Angel. They are still going strong, and here is a remix from their latest CD. The style is definitely 80's but more mature.

2) Syrian - Space Overdrive (Extended) - Great Synths and thumping beats. Vocals have plenty of echo to create a very trancey feel. The chorus is great and will have you singing along waving your hands in the air (or is that just me).

3) Daybehaviour - Close Your Eyes (Activated Mix) - Great female vocals, and progressive synths. Definitely Trance orientated beat, again with a superb chorus. Lots of variety in the synths with a good melody.

4) Neuropa - Every Second (Extended Mix) - this is great. I have bought all of Neuropas CDs based on this song and the free downloads here at Amazon. Neuropa deserve to be big, as their songs are very catchy, and well produced. Great melody and vocals. Check out their album Born, which is my favourite CD of 2004.

5) Cosmicity - Abort (DJ RAM Mix) - Cosmicity are great, but alas no more. The vision of Mark Nicholas, who has reinvented himself and dropped the name Cosmicity. Abort is probably one of my least favourite songs by Cosmicity, but DJ Ram does an excellent dance remix. There is plenty of bass and a variety of great synth sounds throughout.

6) T.O.Y - Another Lovesong (Trance Mix by Massiv in Mensch) - This song is superb. As the remix says it is a Trance mix, but the original song is quite trancey anyway. This song has a very catchy tune and chorus. The vocals and the lyrics, along with the catchy tune are what makes this song stand out. This is my favourite song by T.O.Y, and this is also my favourite mix. A thumping beat with great melodic synths, and soaring vocals singing lines like : The Moon is my Galactic Spy.

7) The Dignity of Labour - XRV (Nevarakka Mix) - Great 80's style vocals (reminiscent of Real Life). Nevarakka again with a great soaring Club remix.

8) Droom - Stay (Delobbo Mix) - Slightly different in that this remix starts off simple and then gradually builds up. This song would not be out of place in any Club. The vocals are great, very different, again with an 80's feel. The remix is great, very up to date.

9) De/Vision - Digital Dream (Analogue at 46hz by Icon of Coil) - Another great remix. Feels slightly different to the original version, because this definitely feels like an Icon of Coil mix. The vocals are very simple but great (De/Vision a great band that have been around for a few years often compared to Depeche Mode).

10) Neuroactive - New Sensation - No remix needed here, as Neuroactive produce very dancey songs anyway. Great thumping beat, with minimal synth effect vocals.

11) AlienSix13 - Highway to the Sun - Again no remix, plenty of BPM. Almost an instumental as just occasional vocals. In the middle and at then end the song breaks down, and this is my favourite part. Piano style synths play out a great melody, and then the beat kicks back in. Plenty of variety in the song.

12) Intuition - Staring Off at Nothing (Beatfreq Mix) - I like Intuition, they have produced some great songs, and I have bought their previous CDs. This song is from their forthcoming CD, but quite dissapointing. Check out the free downloads here at Amazon, and see what you think of their previous material. The remix is very simple. The chorus shows what Intuition are capable of, but unfortunately it is not long enough, and the rest of the song just washes over you. Nice and pleasant, but nothing special.

Conclusion: Another superb collection from a Different Drum. Not just thrown together, but every song has been cherry picked to make up this CD. Buy this, and you are sure to want to by most of the artists individual CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Best Alternative-Electronic Compilation CD from 2004!.......2005-01-25

Whether you are looking for the new sounds of the future or expanding on the sounds of the '80s, Synthpop Club Anthems 3 is an excellent choice. One of my most listened to CDs from 2004 includes some great songs which mix 80s synthpop with newer forms of electronic dance music! Daybehavior's "Close Your Eyes" soon became one of my favourites as it is a great mix of synthpop with trance and very, very sensual female vocals (fans of Kylie Minogue's Fever or Lightyears albums would definitely enjoy this). Neuroactive's "New Sensation" will appeal to fans of Cabaret Voltaire with its edgy-electronic sound. (Can't wait for the new CD N-Gin to be released!) Neuropa's "Every Second" amazes you with a great melody and vocals a la Erasure or the Pet Shop Boys. Italian band Syrian has yet another amazing single with the catchy, fun and oh so addictive "Space Overdrive" - one of the best tracks on the CD. All the other tracks are excellent as well and will appeal to any '80s fanatic into New Order, Visage, Thompson Twins as well as individuals into Hi NRG, trance and techno. Oh! did I mention the excellent single "Oblivion" by Real Life.. famous for their classic song "Send Me An Angel" is include in a great extended remix! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Too good for words.......2005-01-24

With Synthpop heavy hitters such as Real Life, Syrian, and Droom, this is a must have CD - it's that simple. A Different Drum does it again!!

4 out of 5 stars An impressive Synthpop delight.......2005-01-23

I cannot say enough great things about the record label( "A Different Drum" ) that makes these samplers, as well as many of the artists on them, available to the general public.

This isn't your average cookie cutter slapped together compialation. This is a very well crafted collection of rare remix editions of great songs from some of the premier artists of the genre. And when I say this I don't mean a few great songs and a bunch of filler. All the artists featured on this CD definitely deserve to be here.

Although I am fairly literate in the world of synthpop and had at least heard of most of the featured bands on here, I was fairly surprised at the quality of the songs and how great they all are. The title is self explanatory: Dancable, club friendly beats in the classic synthpop tradition of combining catchy beats and well written melodic songs together. Synthpop is more than just dance music; you don't have to be in a club to want to hear it because the songs themself are very catchy and addictive.
The synthpop featured here in my opinion is in the tradition of New Order and Depeche Mode, dark and mysterious.

Definitely worth the money. I've already made the discovery that Neuropa and Syrian are bands that I should not have overlooked, and wont anymore, and also that I really need to purchase some of those Cosmicity items on my wish list. It doesn't matter how much you know or don't know about synthpop, this is a quality collection that will definitely help you discover some great bands, which is what A Different Drum had in mind all along. It has certainly helped me =)

I was introduced to The Echoing Green on a compilation CD some years back, and thank god for that. This band keeps getting better and better. There aren't many albums (by many artists) that I can sit through and listen to every track without getting bored, but The Winter of Our Discontent has me hooked on every song. Beautiful tones, poetic and meaningful lyrics, and talented vocals. A must have for any fan of electronic music.

Favorite Songs: Apology, Story of Our Lives, and the cover of New Gold Dream.

    4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Synthpop.......2006-03-20

Great band, great cd. This cd comes with a bonus disk with extra songs and remixes. Well worth the money. I am eagerly awaiting for a second release from this act.

5 out of 5 stars Very refreshing, very very good!!!.......2005-12-23

I got lucky when I went to Amazon and downloaded there free songs and then I was hooked. I got my copy the other day and wow! Went to get the mail and there it was. Put it in the machine while I was wrapping presents and thought to myself, I really like this! The wrapping started to suck, to busy listening to my new cd but this group really hit me when "Retainer" came on. Listened to pretty much all the cd before I went to work that night. Even after listening to the whole cd, "Retainer" stuck in my head. I was replacing exit signs with a great song stuck in my head. Not a bad night! This group to me will be one of my favorites that will get played over and over. When friends come over, this is what they will hear!

This cd is a two disc and the songs on the second disc are:
    1. Days Like This
    2. If I Ever Grow (Shattuck Plaza)
    3. Nowhere Fast
    4. Retainer (Quarks)
    5. Your New World
    6. To climb (Porta Negra)

If you are a fan of Sythpop, you'll be a fan of "Rupesh Cartel"
Oh' some of the reviews talk about R.C. being like Echo Image. Well if there talking about great music then there right, but there just a bit darker

4 out of 5 stars More synthetic brilliance of Sweden.......2005-09-09

This C.D. is really cool. I popped it into my car stereo after a music festival and began the drive home. I was going on a max of 4 hours sleep, but the energy of this release sustained me the whole trip home. The really brilliant thing about this band is that the vocalist lends a distinctive style that makes Rupesh Cartel instantly recognizeable. To try to describe it is difficult, but his voice has a gravelly quality that complements the sheen of the electronics very well. This is not to say the programming is lackluster. The airy, white noise lead that opens the first track is unique and indicative of the brilliance to come. Just buy the c.d., or at very least check out the downloads, and prrepare for something fresh.

4 out of 5 stars Good synth pop, some catchy tunes.......2005-08-12

I downloaded "Death with Soft Names" and was immediately hooked. Although the song still remains my favorite on the album, there are plenty of other songs that make this a must have for any synth pop fan.

5 out of 5 stars Killer electronic album with some bite.......2005-08-02

This is a great album - it's got the thumpin' bass of techno/electronica, but more in the vein of New Order, where the lyrics are also angsty and not just fluff. More good stuff coming from somewhere in Scandinavia.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant release from Todd Durrant.......2006-07-23

I am rather thankful for the devotion Todd Durrant has for modern synth; this release is indeed well worth placement in your collection. From the darkwave lustre of Intricated and Pulcher Femina, whose respective releases I sought all as a result of this synth anthology to the Depeche Mode simulacrum of Perfidious Words (post-Violator era), I well-enjoyed this and the companion "State of Synthpop 2003". Of the reviewer who condemned the release I might only write that one should probably discredit his opinion as misguided.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time/money.......2006-07-20

There's a reason that each artist on this compilation only has one song on it--it's because after you hear the song, you're going to find yourself secretly wishing you never have to listen to anything recorded by them ever again.

I'm a tolerant person, but this comp. really pushed me over the edge. In addition to being just plain bad, some of the songs were so amateur-ish that the vocals were even recorded out of tune at certain points. I gritted my teeth and listened to all 6 cds. I assure you I won't make that mistake again.

Unless I want a good laugh.

    Amazon.com

This record showcases Dennis Brain as soloist and in various chamber music combinations; afterward, he explains and demonstrates horns of different vintage, ending with the Prologue of Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Horn, Tenor, and Strings, written for him and Peter Pears. In every capacity, his incredible instrumental mastery, flawlessly beautiful tone, natural musicality, collegial spirit, and unerring sense of style are fully displayed. Among the program's rarities, a piece by Arnold Cooke is charming, romantic, and very English; wind quintets by Ibert and Milhaud are charming, Impressionist, and very French. Beethoven's Sextet Op. 81b for two horns and strings, an early work despite the late opus number, is lovely, brilliant, and full of high spirits; a Mozart Divertimento, originally for eight winds, is delightful. (The piano part mentioned in the booklet is not audible.)

Brain's Quintet includes his brother Leonard on oboe, and flutist Gareth Morris, who also provides the liner notes and the photographs (unfortunately without identifying Brain's companions). The recording's weak spot is the Haydn Concerto, where Brain is hampered by an orchestra that sounds poor, plays out of tune and with unstylistic throbbing intensity. The high point is Schubert's "Auf dem Strom," written shortly before he died, one of his greatest songs set to one of his worst poems. Listeners who remember Pears's voice as a young man should be warned that it sounds entirely different: less light in weight and color, less otherworldly. However, the old vocal and expressive magic is fully intact and the performance, though the piano is much too soft, is riveting in its passionate urgency and heartbreaking in its yearning, resigned leave-taking, a sad reminder that we have lost these three artists, two of them very young. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Brain's Performance of Auf dem Strom.......2001-07-16

This disk contains one of the most outstanding instrumental performances on record, Dennis Brain's 1953 radio performance of Schubert's "Auf dem Strom". Even those who have already been amazed by Brain's rapid technique in other, more famous recordings will hardly be prepared for the shock on first hearing the delicacy and musical intelligence of Brain's long phrases, his turns, trills, and resolutions, as well as the skill of his accompaniment. As the recording was for radio broadcast, it was possibly from a single take. This is the stuff of legend.

The mystery of this performance is only heightened by its surroundings. Rellstab's poetry is dull even to those who know German, and in following it to the bitter end Schubert's music (as the notes to the LP of the 1960 Marlboro performance admit) does not quite escape becoming tedious. Furthermore, most potential listeners will not be aware that the horn was in 1953 a clunky, mistake-prone instrument, of which few players risked themselves as soloists before the public.

In sum, one would not expect the general public to find any interest in a clean run-through of this yawner. And yet, Brain's performance leaves horn players agape and is surely one of the finest instrumental recordings ever.

    Album Description

Sweep is a band that is part of what some synthpop fans like to call "the Norwegian synthpop invasion". The band members are friends with other modern synthpop heros like Apoptgyma Berzerk, Echo Image, and Icon of Coil (all from Norway). Sweep focuses on the song-writing and catchy melodies that remind fans of synthpop pioneers like Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, or Hubert Kah, while adding a modern touch and their own stylistic flare.

4 out of 5 stars If You Like Flock of Seagulls and OMD..........2005-11-16

...then check this CD out! It has a really fun retro flavor, but doesn't sound outdated. I'm usually into the darker synth bands, but this CD really does something for me. Songs that really stick out are Favourite Song, We Wrote Our Names In Water and Floating, but I really like them all. They're not a cookie-cutter band, like a lot of bands out there and the CD's fun, catchy and heart-felt. They definately deserve more attention. Also check out Rupesh Cartel, another great not-so-dark band.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Sound.......2004-01-31

Wow...another great synthpop release of 2003 that pretty much reminds me of the soundtrack of a dreamstate. My favorites is "we wrote our names in water" and "miss you", as I have listened to it endlessly. These guys have other b-sides out there that are great to...the production and quality is quite melodic and does remind me of my other favorite band, Echo Image. I totally recommend this album as it is simple and sweet.

    4 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2003-11-14

At first listen, I enjoyed Two Players, but not nearly as much as I do now. It's grown on me like an uncontrollable habit. This is as close to synthpop perfection as anything I've heard in years. Floating, Closer to Earth, Your Emptiness, and Last Train to Paris are my favorite tracks, but they're all very, very good.
It's hard to describe Sweep's sound. It's like a mix of Information Society, Pet Shop Boys, and Erasure. In case it's not obvious, that's a huge compliment.

The only thing I dislike about Two Players is the hidden song at the end of the last track. I find it so pretentious and annoying when bands do that; three minutes of dead air and then the hidden song. But the hidden song is fun too-- kind of a quirky, synthpop symphony.
