5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Summary of Avalon's First Seven Years..........2007-05-04

"Christian music will never be the same..."
That sentence has probably been said by a lot of people regarding the arrival of one of Christian music's biggest phenomenons: AVALON. The vocal quartet, known for their smooth harmonies, has received:

Twenty-five Dove Award Nominations
Three Dove Awards
Three GRAMMY nominations
An American Music Award
Two RIAA-certified Gold albums
Over 3.5 million albums sold
Twenty #1 hit singles (Sixteen of which are featured on this album)
Several television appearances
and more.

Although Avalon has been lavished with success throughout the past 12 years, they are definitely familiar with sorrow and misfortune. (They've had more success than misfortune!) They've had several member changes, as Nikki Hassman-Anders, Cherie Adams, and Michael Passons have all left the group. That's not including Jody McBrayer, who just recently announced that he will be leaving the group as well in January of 2008 due to heart disease.

However, seven years after they began, Avalon released in 2003 "Testify To Love: The Very Best of Avalon" a collection of sixteen of their #1 hits. Smashes include:

"Give It Up" - the first we heard from Avalon
"Testify To Love" - the longest running #1 song of the 1990s
"Adonai" - 1998 Dove Award (Most Inspirational Recorded Song)
"The Glory" - huge #1 hit
"Wonder Why" - another #1

Also includes a special bonus cut from their Christmas record, the spine-tingling "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day" (also done by Celine Dion).

Overall, this collection of songs summarizes the first seven years of AVALON...however, don't stop there!!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING COLLECTION by BJ.......2007-03-03

This collection ROCKS!! Avalon is definitely my favorite group of all time! "New Day", a new recording, is extrememly catchy and one of Avalon's best. I really loved this one. "Everything To Me", another new recording, features Michael and Melissa with their amazing and powerful voices. "Pray" is fast and catchy with Jody's special vocal talent along with Melissa. Of course I loved all the huge #1 hits like: "Wonder Why", "Give It Up", "Testify To Love", "Can't Live A Day", "In Not Of" and "I Don't Want To Go" and MORE! I liked the bonus track, "Don't Save It All For Christmas Day", too. I would definitely recommend this CD to everyone! LOVE YOU AVALON!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! .......2006-06-19

THIS IS ONE OF THOSE CD'S THAT I JUST CAN'T LIVE A DAY WITHOUT LISTENING TO! AVALON HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME AND MANY OF THESE SONGS I KNEW, BUT DIDN'T REALIZE IT WAS THEM SINGING IT UNTIL I PURCHASED THE CD. I WILL NEVER REGRET THIS PURCHASE!
MY FAVORITE TRACK IS #4 "EVERYTHING TO ME", ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS IS WHAT MY LORD IS TO ME!

4 out of 5 stars Good Sound, Very Good Lyrics.......2006-04-23

This is a strong collection of songs by Avalon. Although I've heard several of these songs, I have never had an Avalon CD before. I have been quite pleased with this group of songs.

The songs have solid Christian lyrics. The sound is a lighter pop sound. It is very upbeat and some of the songs are pretty catchy.

Some of the one that I particularly like are as follows: 'Everything To Me', 'Testify To Love', 'Adonai', 'Always Have, Always Will', and 'The Glory'.

This is definitely worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Great Cd.......2005-10-23

This is just an awesome cd and anybody into christian music would love it. New Day and Testify to Love are my favorite songs on this cd.

Five albums into its career P.O.D. stands at a critical juncture. The youthful nation that made this band of California Christians into what it is today has grown older and its tastes have grown more refined, meaning that P.O.D. may have to follow suite. Testify's first act suggests that the band has moved in that direction--there's enough heaviness throughout to please those who've joined the P.O.D. posse within the last two years while the group's appreciation for both hip-hop and reggae--deepens. Hasidic MC Matisyahu guests on two tracks ("Roots In Stereo," "Strength Of My Life"), while "Sounds Like War" and "On The Grind" are noble attempts at attracting more diverse audiences. Although the material remains accessible throughout, both the listener and band both grow weary just after the album's halfway point; the final tracks prove largely indistinguishable from each other, even when tempos and attitudes appear to shift. Testify will please the faithful but despite its best intentions P.O.D. may have some trouble finding new converts.--Jedd Beaudoin

Album Description

Since their release of their first Atlantic album just six years ago, P.O.D. has earned global acclaim and multi-platinum sales for their trademark brand of uplifting power rock. The aptly titled Testify displays the band at their fiery best. Longtime followers of P.O.D.-aka "the Warriors"-will rejoice in many of the band's trademark sonics, from the full-on energy of "This Time" to the "Boom"-esque refrain of the ferocious "Lights Out" and "Say Hello" to the ulitmately inspiring message of the poignant first single, "Goodbye for Now."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-02-12

P.O.D.'s previous cd's have been really good (especially "Payable on Death")but now they have dissapointed me. After the great sound they had in their previous cd, i had great expectations for "Testify." When i finally got my hands on the cd, i didn't know what to say. It was bad. They had a few good songs on it such as "Roots in Stereo", "This Time", and "Strength of my life" but other than those songs, the cd is pretty much worthless.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed but Solid.......2006-10-19

I was disappointed in this album, I must admit, on my first listen.
After giving it a few more tries, I changed my mind somewhat and decided it's a good effort, with several redeeming points. While their attempt at diversifying was not entirely successful, in my opinion, the new sound does have some appeal.

---
Song by song:

Roots in Stereo- A good track to start the album. Matisyahu brings a fresh sound to the vocals which works very well.

Lights Out- Similar to Boom. Loud, catchy, and definitely fun, but due to the style, emphasizes self-promoting lyrics in favor of the more meaningful ones found in some other tracks.

If You Could See Me Now- A melodic, inspiring song that helps display how POD's artistry has grown and changed.

Goodbye for Now- This is the kind of song that got POD where they are and keeps them there. They do this very well. Solid lyrics and good melody.

Sounds like War- Another throw-down track like Lights Out, but with more meaningful lyrics.

On the Grind- Forgive me, but I hated this song.
"..you think that I'm a rapper your way off I'm a killer that be murderin' these tracks, so stay off." Do I really have to say anything else?

This Time- A solid track, showing off their evolving style but staying true to type.

Mistakes & Glories- I love the intro, music, and verses of this song, but the chorus feels repetitive and doesn't quite measure up.

Let You Down- A decent second-half-of-the-album track for POD. Solid music and lyrics, contributes to the overall value of the album without standing out.

Teachers- Similar, but a little heavier and aimed towards the "Warriors".

Strength of my Life- Another Matisyahu collaboration. There is definitely potential in this style, although whether it would work with artist is another question. Great almost Psalmic lyrics. Is this the birth of a new genre? Hassidic Rap/Reggae/Praise/Metal?

Say Hello- I was glad to hear another hard-hitting song this late on the album, which helps prevent the second half from blurring together as some have complained.

Mark my Words- Another song that shows the stylistic changes the band is undergoing. The lyrics were strange, though, possibly influenced by The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? ("white witch", etc)
---

Overall, another solid album, with just a few glitches.
A couple standout songs, some noteworthy attempts at diversification, some which worked very well, others less so. Also, the varying styles of the tracks helped keep the second half of the album from running together.

Not P.O.D's best, but a refreshing return to form in some ways, while continuing to experiment with new styles, and all the while keeping the signature sound that we all love.

1 out of 5 stars Mmm comercialized hip-hop w/ reggea? O_O.......2006-10-17

Well i have to say this is a terrible cd since they lost their guitarist. He has gone on past this trash and formed his own band The al Experiment ... even though he started POD to begin with. Well if your missing the rock elements in this since the only good part of this band is gone, and wish to find something with an edge to it i recommend to get The Experiemnt's United We Fear.

5 out of 5 stars BEST CD OF POD.......2006-10-17

Im a fan of this band since their debut album The Fundamental Elements of Southtown a great album ,their follow up cd sattelite was a little dissapointment to me,payable of death was a great album .So I pick up this cd expecting great things and man this is the best cd to date.

Overall 90/100
best songs if you could see me now, roots in the stereo, mark my words

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes, I just don't get it.......2006-09-24

Ok, I like this album, I was getting tired of the same old BS this guys have been feeding their fans for a few years.
This one is different, but please, Jedd Beaudoin, you should stick with your progressive rock reviews, because if you know what you're talking about, you wouldn't be reviewing this album.
POD looks refreshed, yes, Marcos Curiel was a better guitarist, but the sound they acomplished here, rivals the tight musicianship Curiel showed back in the day. It's a shame they don't get the credit they deserve, but if you're interested in hearing a new P.O.D. sound get this... And you thought you would never see a "nu metal" band evolve... But P.O.D. fans know they're beyond labels and genres right?

On his first album of new material since 1996, Phil Collins's crisp voice returns to the forefront, as does the booming rhythmic grooves and rich melodies. After taking time out to record his big-band tribute, A Hot Night in Paris, and the Tarzan original soundtrack, the former Genesis drummer-turned-frontman seek out more familiar territory on Testify. Collins successfully updates his soft rock sound with discreet electronic embellishments and spartan arrangements. It's simple stuff, but it's what Collins does best. Most intriguing is his silky cover of Billy Nicholls's "Can't Stop Loving You" (originally recorded by Leo Sayer on his 1978 self-titled album), but even originals like the effervescent "Wake Up Call" and the shadowy "Swing Low" echo the ambitious reach of his most popular work. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars Good and mellow.......2007-06-09

Just a kick back and relax album. All of the songs could be on the "easy listening" radio station. Would have given 5 stars but needed a fast song to grab my attention.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome return to 70's form...not.......2006-03-30

Passages that remind you of Wind and Wuthering, singing like the chorus of Ripples...long, complex, dramatic pieces. Then I woke up and heard this syrupy sap. Calling all stations, I testify that this is a waste of talent.

5 out of 5 stars Full of great songs........2005-12-08

All of the songs on this album have been well done. Not just because his voice[which has his typical smooth style that I love] but because of the well done guitars, drums[which Phil has once again done an incredible job with] and the horns. Some songs like Driving Me Crazy were a little too busy for me. It could be different for someone else. Thru My Eyes didn't seem to have a nice tune. It was too plain for me. Other than those two songs I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the album. If you want to get a Phil Collins CD, then this is one you need to get! Go Phil! And keep up the great work!!

3 out of 5 stars Better then People Say.......2005-11-05

Collins "Testify" was his first album in 6 years and it's mighty diverse from "Dance Into the Light" that was predominately a catchy uptempo album with African influents and the trademarks sounds. "Testify" is mostly a album with slow songs like "Both Sides" but less charismatic lyrically wise. The songs here are mostly made for adult contemporary audience or for "Ballads Radio Stations". It does have it's moments but overall it's quite uneven. However, listen to it a few times before you judge.

"Wake Up Call" is a midtempo song, also about relationships. It's rock influented with some decent riffs. One of the best songs here. "Come with Me" is a ballad, beautiful with many diffrent nice instruments used. The title track "Testify" is also a slow paced song with backup choirs, once again the music is better then the chorus. "Don't Get me Started" is one of the faster songs here with a good chorus. "Swing it Low" is slow paced with a jazzy feeeling, rather forgettable since it lacks a good melody and chorus. "It's Not Too Late" is a melancholy ballad with a decent hook.

"This Love, This Heart" is powerballad with alot of emotion in. "Driving Me Crazy" is the odd song out here, one of a few uptempo songs with some catchy flute(?) sounds. "The Least you do" follows the path of slow ballads here and it's forgettable. "Can't Stop Loving You" was a hit single and it is a emotional midtempo song with a good hook. "Through My Eyes" is a midtempo song, it got some very nice instruments but the chorus and melody are so so. "You Touch My Heart" is another ballad, I love the music that also used horns but not the chorus. The chorus reminds me of "True Colours".

Overall, Don't be to fast to judge this album, listen to it all before you make up your mind. There's alot of hidden musical gems here. "Justify" is far from as bad as some reviwers say, it's a very beautiful album with great instrumnets used in almost every song, what this album lacks may be good lyrics and good choruses. It didn't give many single hits but as a album it's not bad, especially if you're a old fan of him you should apreciate. If you're a new fan, don't start here!

3 out of 5 stars Not much better than his last (dance into the light).......2005-10-20

before this album was released critics were giving it fairly good reviews. Phil did get back to the good drumming here and the CD had moments including the leo sayer cover can't stop loving you and least you can do. Wakeup call was alright but sounded alot like the both sides album. Phil's voice is going too. In the last couple years he has had heaing loss and vocal cord problems. He's 54 now... You can't blame him for sucking now. he did so many wonderful things and he can't be on top forever. I'm just wondering where the musician went. Anything Phil has done since 1993(post we can't dance with genesis - 1991-1992 / both sides) has been mediocre. Like I said though, there were moments on this one and you can, at times, here old phil collins and genesis patterns here.

5 out of 5 stars Good gospel CD!.......2003-07-08

I've loved the Gaithers along time, they are my favorite gospel singers! And I think this is a really good CD, that they released. My Mom really loves their song "John the Revelator." I like it too! And I also like "Lord feed your Children." and I like "Build An Ark." Those are my 3 favorite songs off of this CD. I haven't listened to it all yet but I will get to that! :-D Hehe. If you like some really good good gospel music BUY THIS CD TODAY! DON'T WAIT! IT'S REALLY GOOD! :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

    3 out of 5 stars It's fine.......2002-03-22

I really enjoy the Gaither Vocal Band. This is definitely not one of their albums that I enjoy the most, however. Although the group's harmonies are as good as they always are, I am disappointed to admit that no song on this album really "moved" me the way I am ordinarily moved by their performances. I guess I could summarize my review by saying buy this album if you're trying to build a "complete" collection of GVB albums. Otherwise, you may enjoy some of their newer albums more than this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2000-04-04

I have become a GVB fan in recent years and bought this CD because of "Lord Feed Your Children". I was not familiar with the lead singer on here but after listening to this CD several times since receiving it on Thursday it has become one of my favorites. Love the up-tempo stuff, their wonderful harmonies and the change of pace with "Build An Ark". This CD shows the incredible range of talent that Bill Gaither has managed to assemble over the years as he keeps re-creating his group.

Dottie Peoples has produced an outstanding piece of work on this album "Testify". The music is soft and beautiful, the lyrics are very inspirational. I really enjoy "Thank You" a very moving selection, as you hear and experience how gifted this singer is, her voice is vibrant and strong. "Testify" is another up lifting and moving selection. This entire album is a wonderful piece of work. I enjoy it very much.

3 out of 5 stars What band is Jonas in now?.......2007-06-12

Carnal Forge made five amazing albums up until this point. I was disappointed they had a new lead singer; I thought, this cannot be good. I still gave the cd a listen because im a huge fan. The cd is nothing like Carnal Forge and Jens is nowheres as good a singer as Jonas was. Sure, Jonas couldnt pronounce half the words he sung, but he still was an amazing singer. The cd is right on targert as where the band should be. The first three albums all sounded the same, but were brilliant. Then the last two were longer songs but still had thrash elements. This cd is a little slower then Arent You Dead Yet? and the singer doesnt belong with this band. Can anyone tell me what Jonas is up too now. Id recommend this cd to a metal fan who has never heard of this band. If you havent heard previous records then you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Are You Ready To Testify.......2007-04-08

I think any diehard MC5 fans would enjoy this set. The packaging is nice, and it includes the notorious full page ad that the band and/or John Sinclair put out when their 1st LP was banned from Hudsons. Of the 3 MC5 LP's, I'd say the sound quality on this set is closest to the 1st LP. There are disclaimers on the CD liner notes concerning the quality, since the recordings may well be soundboard or audience recordings. Knowing that in advance, I was prepared for the worst, but I've enjoyed listening to the 3 CD's many times. It seems like everyone involved did a good job with what they had to work with. I'm not sure, but this may be the only source to hear some of these songs live-at the least, some aren't on the 3 LP's. On disc #2, a nice surprise was the clarity of Dennis's drums. It's also neat to hear their shows unedited, and the conversation with the audience in between. I hate to even allude to anything negative, since this seems to be a labor of love, and I may be wrong, so take this with a grain of salt, but: I'm not sure that all of the music was transfered to the correct speed. I did several cross referencing checks with the LP's, and most everything seems to be fairly relative to the keys the band played in. But, (and again I may be wrong), it seemed to me that some may be 1/4 or 1/2 step off. Which means, the music may be a bit slower than the actual performance. There's several factors to consider, though. One, bands didn't generally use tuners back then. Two, it sounds as though the band may have tuned down a half step in those days. To the average fan this may not be important, but to a musician it might be. Still, I think it's great stuff. It appeared to me to be somewhat authorized, but, I'm certainly not the one who could answer that question.

5 out of 5 stars 2.5 Kicks To The Head.......2006-06-11

This collection is a great buy. Not only is the packaging superb, but there are extensive liner notes and the official bullet-points of The White Panther party so you can understand the rights, people, and beliefs this band stood up for.

Included in this box set are two complete concerts and one EP (half concert?)that will kick your head straight into the next election year.

Side note: There have been complaints about these concerts being of poor sound quality...nothing a decent equalizer can't solve. In fact, let that be a musical life lesson to you.

5 out of 5 stars I am ready to testify!!!!.......2005-08-03

The MC5 are one of the most influential and underrated bands of the late 1960's. They only released three albums before they imploded in the early 1970's. This is a great re-release of some previously released bootlegs. The sound quality isn't the greatest, but these are bootleg recording from over 30 years ago. That does not take away from the passion that the band plays with, nor there skills as musicians. This is an excellent release for anyone interested in a band that has been an influence hard rock, heavy metal, and punk rock.

2 out of 5 stars poor sound quality make this box problematic.......2005-05-15

the sound quality of this box set is lousy. it varies somewhat from cd to cd (separate performances) but it's never good. vocals are muffled and distorted throughout and even some spoken song intros are hard to understand. at times the bass is nonexistent. in short, real bootleg recordings from 1968 & 70. so although the band seems to be in very good form here, only ardent MC5 fans need consider buying this because the sound quality's a real problem. 2 and 1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit for the Martins!.......2005-03-18

I'm so glad I got this CD! The Martins are the only southern group I like and they've wow'd me again. Their voices are so beautiful, their harmonies are rich, but most of all they sing the Gospel!

      5 out of 5 stars i love it!.......2003-04-25

This is certainly the best Martins' CD so far. It has an outstanding mix of different styles, mixed with a capella here and there. Their harmonies and blends are amazing. My first exposure to this group was when I bought a tape from my local Christian bookstore entitled "Martins Live...in His presence" - great music, I don't think it's available on Amazon, though - and that made me become a Martins music fan. I understand they're coming out with a new release later this year, so I'm anxiously awaiting what these music innovators have in store for us. . .

5 out of 5 stars Harmony, spirit and joy.......2002-05-13

I had previously owned one Martins CD--Windows, which I enjoyed for the great harmony and exuberance of Gospel music. I previewed GlorifyEdifyTestify in a local Christian music store and decided to bring it home. I am so very glad that I did!

The Martins as always demonstrate brilliant harmony, and great musical arrangements. Yes, there is Gospel flavor on the CD, but they have also taken some of the contemporary worship songs that I am familiar with and added just enough to make them something special, never taking them to irreverence.

The Martins have provided 15 songs on the CD--I appreciate their generosity in doing so. Only one song on the CD was less than I hoped for--Michael W. Smith's worship tune "Great is the Lord." I didn't like the brass instruments and the unusual arrangement--it didn't seem to fit. Otherwise this is a great CD and very unique, showing much imagination and work, and heart for God.
