5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Subtle but amazing in every way.......2005-07-26

This is truly a beautiful soundtrack. Like the film, it is probably not very well known by many people, but a gem nonetheless. It has several themes that are played with variation throughout the soundtrack. Overall, the sound is very consistent; delicate strings and piano, slightly melancholy and mysterious at times. It is a little repetitive, but you won't care because the melodies are so exquisitely crafted. This is the kind of cd that you can just sit and listen to and let your mind wander, or read to and not have to worry about one track being calm and quiet and the next being loud and blaring. For such a short movie, you have a good amount of playing time to feast your ears on.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack is a work of art itself.......2005-04-12

I love this soundtrack! It stands alone as beautiful, haunting, alluring, and innocent--just as Griet herself was in the film. Desplat perfectly captured the spirit of the story, enhanced and deepened a plot that was less than stellar.

Scarlett Johanssen's acting is superb, as well as Essie Davis and Colin Firth. The story, though, was a bit tired--pretty housemaid/jealous wife/do-nothing husband. Its portrayal of Vermeer and his wife was a disservice to the real people, even though it is a fictionalized account.

The two best tracks on this album are 'Griet's Theme' and 'Colours in the Clouds'. While I'm not keen on seeing the film again, this soundtrack is a treasure. It's a real work of art, second only to Vermeer's work.

4 out of 5 stars fine film.......2005-02-04

a fine film of one man's fantasy of a vermeer painting. Strictly fiction based on an actual work of art. I enjoyed the film, though not a great film. Vermeer's character remined basically unchanged or developed during the film. Still a worthwhile fine movie. Remember, it is all fiction, except for the lovely work which thankfully is real. Who knows? She was lovely.

5 out of 5 stars A sumptuous film score.......2004-05-16

Earlier this winter I saw "Girl With a Pearl Earring" in the movie theater. I loved the concept of taking a famous painting and turning it into a fictional story like author Tracy Chevalier did with Johanne's painting of a girl with a pearl earring. The film was a stunning piece of work. Colin Firth as Vermeer and Scarlett Johansson as Griet put in excellent performances as did the supporting cast. What really made the film for me was the haunting film score. The music really shaped the mood of the film. I finally found a copy of the soundtrack for "Girl With a Pearl Earring" today. I knew right away that I had to buy it. Listening to the music sent chills down my spine. Alexandre Desplat did an amazing job as composure as well as conductor for the film score. It brought back images of the film. I agree with the other reviewer, Alexandre's film score should have received an Oscar nod. It is truly one of the best film scores I have ever heard in my 30 years of life (well, almost 30 years in a few months). The music isn't bombastic and loud like a lot of film scores tends to be. It is very subtle and breathtaking to this music lover's ears. Anyone who has seen and loved the movie, get this soundtrack. It is a nice reminder of one of the best art house films ever made.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasing and haunting score.......2004-03-02

I first saw Girl with a Pearl Earring at Telluride by the Sea in late September 2003.
Immediately, the score struck me as something beautiful and unique. It was lovely against the gorgeous spectrum of the film.
I immediately wanted to purchase it,
but only until six months later is it now available.
I highly suggest purchasing this disc, even if you have not seen the film.
The score was robbed of an Academy Award nomination
and shouldn't be overlooked by anyone.

    3 out of 5 stars More Than A Single.......2005-07-13

I love any band where buying the singles is like getting a whole new album. I'm sure I don't need to tell you what Underworld is all about; if you're looking up a single, you're familiar with the band. Trust me, you won't regret buying this. In addition to the album version of "Pearl's Girl," it contains eight tracks that bear no resemblance to the single, even the remixes. I think the standouts are "Puppies," which is an odd, almost Godspeed-You-Black-Emperorish kind of thing (though more upbeat), and "Deep Arch," which doesn't change much over its eight minutes of running time but, like most Underworld, has a great, ambient, city-at-night feel; a soundtrack for driving on just the right kind of evening.

This ain't gonna convert the unconverted, but for fans it's a solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough.......2005-07-02

As any Underworld fan might attest, "Pearl's Girl" is their signature title- absolutely awesome. So, I was quite pleased when this EP came out; the "EDIT" version is nice when I just need the quick, to-the-point "Pearl's Girl" fix. However, the 'diamond' I'm refering to is "Cherry Pie." I mean... Wow. At first, I was a bit thrown off thinking it was a remix of the none-too-impressive "Rowla" From "Second Toughest in the Infants," but it wasn't long before I was unexpectedly thrown into the spacy, throbbing, hard-hittin' loops and passionate intensity of "Cherry Pie." I never thought I'd find a track on an EP that would make it among my list of "must-hears" for any band. I've always thought of EPs as sort of after-thoughts from a successful band; "Cherry Pie" alone is fresh, new and a worthy exercise of Underworld's talents.
Unfortunately, the "Pearl's Girl" remixes aren't much to rave about; I'd just as soon stick to the original. "Puppies" is a nice, ambient track ala their "Beaucoup Fish" release. "Mosaic" and "Deep Arch" are relatively uninspired, but not necessarily bad tunes; good for when you just wanna soundtrack for veggin' out.
All in all, "Cherry Pie" and the original and edited "Pearl's Girl" versions make this EP worth the purchase; the other tracks are decent filler's though not the epitome of Underworld's efforts. I highly recommend this title.

5 out of 5 stars More cherry pie, please!.......2005-02-17

i'm a big fan of underworld-- i bought this randomly at virgin one day... when i popped it in i started flipping through the tracks and i fell in love with track 5-cherry pie. i haven't heard anything like this before, the song builds up so well and there is such a strong bass line. i especially love the middle of the song (around 4'15") when the drawn-out synth tones come in. if i ever heard this in a club i'd go out of control! it's my favorite underworld song of all time. underworld rocks!

2 out of 5 stars Why, Why, Why?.......2004-08-05

I thought 'Pearl's Girl' from 'Second Toughest in the Infants' was a GEM, but why did they have to make the song into this EP? If it was a CD-Single, it would've been much more worth it in my own opinion. 85% of the EP was very un-motivational and I didn't think that any of the mixes were impressive at all. The 'Tin There' cut and 'EDIT' from the EP were really the only two versions of the song worth the listen. The '14996 Version' was boring and I felt that the song had no relevant flow or direction. 'Oich Oich' and 'Puppies' were dull...ambient textures do not fit Underworld at all...only in 'Dubnobasswithmyheadman'. Don't get me wrong though, I love Underworld a lot, but this is not what they sound like at all...I know change is necessary for a lot of artists (Ex. The Chemical Brothers: Come With Us), that goes for every techno artist, but this wasn't the most fresh start for Underworld. 'Cherry Pie' was clearly 'Rowland' from the 'Second Toughest' album and the same goes for 'Mosiac' and 'Deep Arch'...no real direction of where the song was going and how it was going to end. That's my review, thanks!

    5 out of 5 stars don't miss this.......2001-05-20

It may be an EP, but what you get for your money is actually a whole album's worth of UW material. And not just any material, this EP contains some of the best techno to come from the british trio (now reduced to duo). It starts out with a mix of Pearls girl, called Tin There, but as is often the case with UW mixes of thier own work, it sounds nothing at all like the original track. It's a very fast paced, breakbeat laden techno frenzy that just builds and builds in the distortion, into an incredible climax. One of the most energetic techno tracks I've ever heard. The 14996 mix is a more subdued version with little vocal samples of the original thrown in, not the best track of this ep. Puppies is a whole other world again, deep reverbed synths and a really cool vocoder effect on Karl's voice make this a very dreamy and emotional track. Oich Oich is absolutely one of my favourite tracks of all time. Very ambient and very carefully built and layered with synths, voice samples, lyrics and a laid back housebeat mix into a dreamlike world of sound and emotion. Cherrie Pie starts with the intro from Rowla (from Second Toughest...) but quickly transforms into another wonderful techno epic with a very dark and hypnotising sound. Then there's the actual Pearl's Girl (and a shorter edit version) which still remains one of UW's best and most popular tracks, hard breakbeats, great lyrics, great atmosphere. The last two tracks, Mosiac and Deep arch are wonderfully ambient instrumental tracks, with again the careful buildup that is so reminiscent of UW's style. All in all, this ep has both incredible power, and incredible atmosphere and makes me think wether some people who call UW "watered down music" have actually listened to any of it.

I loved the movie, and the soundtrack is a big part of the reason why. Beautiful, haunting music, gorgeous cinematography, fascinating story -- listening to the soundtrack brings it back for me.
Almost an hour's worth of music, another plus.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Songs That Made Her a Star:.......2000-06-18

It was her first several motion pictures that resulted in Deanna Durbin's becoming the highest paid female star of her time; and it is from those movies that this anthology has been taken. The selections are a good mixture of everything from operatic arias to popular tunes of the day. The original recordings are over sixty years old; but modern engineering techniques have enhanced them to "better than new" sound. If you, like so many others, are rediscovering this remarkable young artist, this album will provide a great deal of pleasure...for the music, and as an excellent example of nostalgic memorabilia.

      4 out of 5 stars Essential history.......2007-06-24

Hooray for Pavilion Records and all other organizations collecting early recordings and transferring them to CD for the world to enjoy! Of course since they are EARLY recordings (1917-1927) it has that fizzy wax sound to it and the lyrics get mushy at times. That either makes it endearing or annoying, depending on your perspective. It's lovely to finally hear the Brox Sisters sing again, let John Steel's tenor soar, and to hear what You'd Be Surprised sounded like sung by a girl. The earliest songs of Irving Berlin may not be his best, but are a refreshing glimpse into his 30s. Half of the songs on this disc debuted in Berlin's own Music Box Revue at the theater he built after WWI.
