With over 15 acclaimed films to his credit, actor Jared Leto knew he had a challenge in creating a legitimate musical group, and the fact that a great many gifted thespians have pumped out some pretty awful albums hasn't slowed him at all. great album.......2007-07-28

Well first of all try to understand my bad english (I'm italian). This album is a better project that the first 30 seconds to mars ones, lyrics and music are very well connected and structured, every song is really enjoyable. Over all the voice of jared leto is better than in the other album, less experimental and more warm and rich, with various emotional blending. The kill is one the best songs of the album with really intense concept. Listen all the album, it's a really good job.

I became a huge fan of 30STM after seeing Jared in the video "From Yesterday". I immediately ran out and bought their album; A Beautiful Lie. It is amazing. Being close to 50, most of my friends are surprised that I took to this group, but I found that age doesn't count when it comes to rock music. I introduced all of my friends to their music. I bought their first album,"30 Seconds to Mars" and couldn't believe that as outstanding as the album of the same is, that "A Beautiful Lie" surpassed it. It is without a doubt an album to own not only for your listening pleasure but to keep in your collectors section. PROVEHITO IN ALTUM. Realizing that they also had an album (of the same name (A Beautiful Lie), with a video included, I had my daughter quickly purchase it for me. I love seeing the videos. "A Beautiful Lie" pass it on.........

Great songs, Great sound, Great Band. .......2007-05-31

A Beautiful lie is my first 30 Seconds to Mars CD. After listening to it thoroughly, I can't wait for their next album.
Every song has a different sound to it, which makes the CD even better because you really can't put a certain theme on it--I like that.
I especially like 'The Kill', 'A beautiful lie', 'Attack' and 'From Yesterday', but that is not to say that I dislike any of the other songs: each one is fantastic in its own right.
Appart from Panic! At the Disco's Debut Album, "A Beautiful Lie" is my favorite CD of 2005.
With this album, 30 Seconds to Mars has won itself a good position in my highly-coveted (at least I think so) list of favorite bands.
Anyone who wishes to spend some money on some quality rock-punk-emo music, should definitely look no further.

Protected CD - DO NOT BUY.......2007-05-23

Consumers should know that this CD is a DRM protected CD and will not be able to be read in most computer CD-ROM drives along with certain regular audio CD players. I recently purchased this CD only to find out that I could only use it in the car and an old CD player I happened to still have.

Like most people I usually rip my CD's to MP3s and do the majority of listening either at my computer or on the go with my MP3 player. This isn't even a remote possibility. Do not support companies and bands that restrict consumer's rights!

This is a Virgin Records CD.

Different from their first album; energetic rock with some pretensions.......2007-05-22

The good:
- Interesting song topics - far from the standard concerns of pop/rock. Leto is interested in internal battles, progress of life (fitting for an actor, I guess)
- More variety between and within songs (tempo, topics) than the first album
- Some catchy hook songs like From Yesterday and Attack
- Less noise and more music
The bad
- Verges on pretentious at times
- There's still no guitarist capable of a good lead to sustain the songs - sometimes songs just feel incomplete
- Jared's vocals are still somewhat marginal, not really skilled, rather just enthusiastic
- Doesn't have quite the intensity of the first album
Somehow I found this a bit forgettable - there was nothing I disliked, and some good songs, but I only listened to it a couple of times.

Incidentally - I really like the "addon" track Hunter as it is quite different from the rest - more mellow, quietly intense - and Leto doesnt do any screaming in it ;) Battle of One is also OK.

This was one of those records I kept thinking about buying as a teenager but never got around to it. Should've bought in the 70's because I am enjoying it now.

Band on the Run is much better.......2007-06-18

This is far from McCartney's best. In fact, only five of these songs really stand out to me one way or the other. The best songs are easy to pick out: My top pick is the New Orleansy hit Listen to What the Man Said, followed by the album's only two rockers (Letting Go, Rock Show). On the bad end are Spirits of Ancient Egypt, which is just idiotic, and the dull ballad Call Me Back Again. Actually, a lot of these songs are ballads, and rather forgettable ones at that (Love in Song, You Gave Me the Answer, Medicine Jar, Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People), but at least none of them are odiously bad. I'm not an expert on Paul's solo career, but I will say that Band on the Run leaves much more of an impact.

A stellar album!.......2007-06-18

What a great album! 30 years after, you still can listen in a row to all these great songs. This album, mostly recorded in New Orleans, has a special touch and was the foundation for the 75-76 tour that would bring the Wings around the world and take them to the top.

My 2 favorites: "Magneto And Titanium Man" and "Listen To What The Man Said"!

If you like the best hits of the Wings, go and buy it, you won't be disappointed!

One of Paul's best!.......2007-01-05

This is still one of my favorite McCartney albums. i bought this when it first came out, and liked every song!(which is unusual). in a time when Paul was writing sugary stuff, this effort was pretty darn good! great songwriting. it's like he actually had something to say, instead of frivolous stuff! Love in song, and rockshow are two examples of this great album. i feel like letting go, is another song which ROCKS THE HOUSE!! a great one to listen to any time of day!! Highly Reccomended!

A Musical Trip Down Memory Lane.......2007-01-05

Growing up I was a big fan of Paul McCartney and Wings. I was a little young to know or understand his music during the Beatle years so Wings was my first exposure. This CD brought back a lot of memories spent listening to the radio on a warm summer day without a care in the world. I am especially partial to Magneto and Titanium Man. Although the song is lyrical and fun, its melody and words hearken back to a more carefree time that we all wish to relive. The mastering of the CD was well done and the music was fairly dynamic when compared to other versions of songs from that era. I've definitely enjoyed this CD and have since begun searching out other recording from that era.

Descent album.......2007-06-10

All of this bands albums to date are descent. This is their first major release. It's a little bit more electronic than "a beautiful lie." But there are some very descent songs on this album. It gets a bit repeditive towards the end of the album, so be prepared for that.

When I first listened to this CD I was expecting something similar to their second CD. Their second cd has some good songs on it, but overall it just isn't that unique and is completely different. Anyways, this CD is like I said, Nothing at all like the first. This is a good thing. It has a really unique sound to it and really grows on you when you listen to it. All I can say is they should have made their second cd more like this one, not emo garb that gives them a mediocre name to anyone without a flippy hairdue. Most people have not listened to this and base the band soley off of their second album. Give this one a chance.

Refreshingly Surprising!.......2007-04-27

To be honest with you, after hearing "The Kill" on MTV I was intrigued with 30 Seconds to Mars, but I wasn't too hopeful as I'm not a big emo fan and that's the direction that I thought they would stick to. My friend suggested getting their first album, and I absolutely love this CD. The music doesn't really fit into a specific genre, but the sound is amazingly dense and completely fills your ears. Jared Leto really is an amazing singer and the layering of the vocals on the CD amplifies it tenfold. He teases with nearing the border of screaming on a few of the songs and when he does scream, it's perfectly placed and far from "screaming for the sake of screaming." There's nothing truly profound about the lyrics or instrumental capabilities of the musicians, but the songs are catchy, hard driving, and extremely well mixed and produced. I was thoroughly disappointed with the second album after listening to this one, two thumbs up and all that jazz.

I live in a cave so I had no idea who 30STM was. I'd heard the name mentioned in passing but paid no mind. Then I saw the CD on sale at WalMart and went home and pulled it up on my musicmatch account and within 20 seconds my mouth was hanging open. WOW. It's like the Deftones married Mars Volta but a hundred times better. I bought A Beautiful Lie and it's good, but not as good as this one.

A Beautiful Lie - Beautifully Enhanced.......2007-04-12

I highly recommend this to any 30STM fan, even those who already have the album - A Beautiful Lie. The enhanced DVD enables the fan to take a closer look at the making of 'The Kill' video, plus a full version of the video... and other interviews. The enhanced CD is not to be missed !

An amazing and unexpected treasure.......2007-03-22

We are fairly fickle about our CD collection and the quality the bands must maintain. Having said that, some bands are not purchases out-of-the-gate, or on release day. For a few, like this 30 Seconds to Mars CD, they have to glean our interest from radio and video releases first.

And wow, have they done that. Once FROM YESTERDAY came out, we knew we had to own the CD. But it was soon apparent that was only the beginning. If you are worried that the constant yelling vocals of Jared Leto may indicate an album that is "less than," DON'T BE! From start to finish this CD has no deletable tracks - a feature that gets quite a bit of use in our household (we can clear CD tracks from the player that we do not want it to play).

Don't waver any more if you are questioning the addition of this CD to your collection. The radio and video hits are only a hint of what is being offered, and we look forward to the next 30 Seconds to Mars release.

I cannot really equate them to any other band, which is the most difficult part of assessing the quality of the 30 Seconds tracks. That alone should be an indicator of why this CD is a must-own.

Saw a video from this album last month on LOGO tv and really liked it. It was a Valentine's Day gift for 2007 and I liked all of the songs equally which is rather rare on many albums these days. If you like gothic/metal music then this might be for you.

Chronicling The Replacements' gloriously tempestuous decade on a single disc ostensibly seems akin to reading Cliff's Notes for the New Testament: No sooner do you grow fond of the protagonist than they've nailed him up. And if that comparison sounds a tad sacrilegious, perhaps you underestimate the Mats' hallowed place in modern rock history--and the hearts of their ardent fans. Yet somehow even this condensed format focuses the songs of Paul Westerberg and playing of bandmates Bob and Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars into a dramatic arc that can't be denied. The initial tracks of this 20-track collection display a band joyously besotted by nascent punk thrash, yet one not so different from the scores of similar bands tearing up local clubs in the '80s.

But by the time of Hootenanny's "Color Me Impressed" and "Within Your Reach," something magical was clearly happening within Westerberg's songwriting and the band at large, even if it was largely inspired by terminal boredom, perpetual discontent, no small amount of alcohol--and an indifference to success that was one of their greatest charms. Within two years they'd produce one of the decade's--and perhaps rock history's--most compelling albums with Let It Be and the indie movement's first grassroots anthem in "Unsatisfied." They followed it up with Tim, a collection where Westerberg seemed able to conjure similar generational marching orders ("Here Comes a Regular," "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial") with preternatural ease; enraptured rock critics probably thought harder about his music than he ever did. Though highlighted by such gems as "Alex Chilton," "Skyway" and such pop-smart swan songs as "I'll Be You" and "Merry Go Round," the Mats' third act dissolved into the expected, if equally star-crossed solo career for Westerberg and the tragic death of Bob Stinson, events which can't help but cast a melancholy shadow over the unexpectedly gritty new old stock recordings "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive." --Jerry McCulley

How can anyone who lives in the muck of a society that prizes commerce, populism, media savvy, and dumbed-down entertainment above all else be surprised how little popular success or money or fame the Replacements achieved in their career? But our same American culture of mass-produced cr*p-by-committee fertilized their existence, out of which sprang this wondrous musical art, an art that is nevertheless woefully underrepresented in this single CD.

Not to bleat too much, but how does Rhino justify the omission of Androgynous and Swingin' Party, which, in all of their weird, surreal, organic, raw, sloppy beauty, epitomized the immediacy that helped make Let It Be and Tim the greatest back-to-back albums by any artist in the 1980s? These songs only get better with repeated listening, unlike the Mats' pre-Let It Be punk efforts that sound like the kind of speed metal that gives skateboarding fanboys hard-ons but grows increasingly tiresome with age.

It is funny to me that as their music matured and became more melodic and interesting, many of these same fanboys accused the Mats of selling out. That instinct to keep bands stuck in perpetual adolescence always drags down great music, but thankfully, Westerberg and Co. resisted, although at the unfortunate loss of a bandmate.

Despite missing some vital tunes, I still give this album five stars for Rhino's good sense to include Answering Machine and Here Comes a Regular, and because it is still the Replacements, who even at their worst could puke out better music than the soulless, high-polish, overproduced dreck that wins Grammy awards. If there is any justice, the Mats will be fast-tracked into the RnR Hall, thus affording them the opportunity to give the middle finger to industry tastemakers who overlooked them in their prime.

What, yet another Mats compilation album?.......2007-01-16

Yeah, Yeah, this has the Twin Tone recordings that All For Nothing did not have. Sure, that makes this a better compilation of hits (what hits?) album. However, where All For Nothing had a disc of rairities, this one hopes to entice Mats fans with two new recordings. Uhh, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Paul released like four (at least) solo albums since leaving the Mats (one could argue that the last Mats album was a Paul solo album)? I guess, Paul's solo works are different when he attaches the Mats name to it? So, uhhh, why exactly should you buy this CD? Well, if you are a fan and already have all of their stuff, there is no reason to buy this CD. I mean, come on. Chris was so indifferent about this project that he did not even bother playing drums on the two new cuts and Bob is dead. What, did you really miss hearing Tommy's bass-playing that much? Listen to some GnR for crying out loud. LOL

A Great Best-of.......2007-01-11

I'm going to keep this short and sweet: The Replacements are a "glorious footnote" in the history of rock music, a band that didn't sell enough to make an impact when they were together (at least on the superficial charts of the Eighties), but I guarentee every indie band that followed had a record or two and practiced "Can't Hardly Wait" or "Kiss Me on The Bus" to learn their instruments.

So if you're wondering what all the fuss is about, pick up this disc. I owned Hootenanny for a while back in the day, but foolishly let it slip out of my hands. So when I saw this disc, I had to get it. You can't understand alternative rock without the Replacements, REM, Joy Division, and Mission of Burma.

Do yourself a favor and get this, you won't regret it.

One Historic CD.......2006-12-19

For a compilation, this CD is awesome. It follows the Replacements from their punk rock roots to their more polished sound (lyrics and music). One of the best aspects of the Replacements was their refusal to apologize for not being famous rock stars. Sure, the critics loved them, and LET IT BE is on many top spots of top rock and roll albums of all time (as well it should be). Still, they never found the ultra-glamorous rock star lifestyle that so many seek. And their music is better for it.

The best way to listen to this is on a long, autumn drive on backroads, with the windows down and the volume loud. If you still have one of those archaic tape recorders, record a compilation tape and throw in some greats from this album. It only gets better with age.

And to address my own review title, I wish this had been two CDs. Or three.

Great one disc Best of, Excellent with 2 new songs, but so short........2006-12-05

This ablum is the cream of the Replacements catalog, but its hard not to want all of their music on this. It does not hit their twintone years, which I am suprised has not been done yet (the did it for soul asylum). But, this covers their sire years well, and is greatly complimented by the best of Paul Westerberg CD. A good starter CD, but also check out the "all for nothing/nothing for all" greatest hits released years ago, 2 cds of music with the second disc being B sides and rare recordings. You'll want all the replacements Albums after you get this one anyway, their addicting.

On De-loused in the Comatorium, the Mars Volta approach rock & roll like it's an ascetic discipline, a calling that comes with lyric sheets as dense and impenetrable as the Kabbalah and a ritual of worship that's dervish-like in its intensity. Formed by vocalist Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriguez after the split of their former band--Texan hardcore legends At the Drive-In, who splintered acrimoniously in 2001--the Volta are an unashamedly progressive outfit, dealing in grandiose arrangements that come on like Led Zeppelin fired through Saturn's rings.

You can still hear many of ATDI's hallmarks inside the spasmodic dynamics of "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" and "Eriatarka"--it's just now they're immeasurably more complex, governed by time signatures responsible only to some alien logic, and cast out on ever more remote waves of mind-bending conceptual fantasy.

Bixler's serrated howl has mellowed somewhat, veering here from tender croon to shrill falsetto. And interestingly, Flea guests here, although you wouldn't know it: his brooding basslines bear nothing of the slap-happy funk he displays in the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. But ironically, the most startling contribution comes from the band's late sound manipulator Jeremy Ward, who passed away after a heroin overdose on the eve of this album's release. His dubby ambient fills unfurl in the valleys between each jagged instrumental peak, lending a truly otherworldly feel to proceedings. A morbid legacy, but thankfully, far from this album's only selling point: De-loused in the Comatorium is the rare prog-rock landmark that prizes punk passion over meandering pretension. -- Louis Pattison

Seriously, you need this album. I've tried several other Mars Volta albums and none come close to me... the orchestration, spacy-intergalactic noise madness, heavenly guitar, unmistakable vocals, and "I don't know what you mean but I kind of do and it's really way cool" lyrics... it all makes for an unbelievable synergy. There's a good mix of upbeat, almost thrashing moments intermixed with some mellow interludes and one entirely acoustic song.

Listen to it, buy it...

I read somewhere that Omar wanted his next album to be more like Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It is clear these guys have a good taste in music, not to mention with this album they did just that and combined moments of heroin like bliss with moments of chaotic psychadelic distortion. The later may lead many to balk, for instance my uncle thought Satanic Magesties was a bit too psychadelic. I would disagree with him, I belive the abnormal sounds heard here push the listener to new levels of awareness; it stretches what the mind can appreaciate. To explain what I mean by this: the first time I heard this album I wasnt all that impressed, and I begged my friend to put back on Relationship o Command. Then one day, probably stoned out of my mind, I took Deloused with me on my walk to campus and something just clicked. I listened to the songs over and over again and found myself realizing what I had missed before, Pure Ecstacy. What's more is that this album led me back to other types of music that I had previously passed over and I started to find a beauty in them too. If art is meant to inspire and ignite passion, then I can not help but give this cd 5 stars, call it a classic, better yet: This album is the Piper, leading us to greener pastures where scarecrows and gnomes snort drugs and drink whiskey....Also check out Texas' Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime, which reminds me of this album.

Before you base your judgment of this CD soley in comparison to any of The Mars Volta albums you need to realize that it isn't a Mars Volta album. It is a Soundtrack for a film and Omar is even quoted by saying it is a reaction to the film. If you're a die-hard Omar fan then you'll love it. Rapid Fire Toll Booth is now one of my all time favorites and all the other songs sound great in my opinion.

I don't usually write reviews because it's so painful for me to read someone elses review especialy ones that contain the following examples. I only like their older stuff, they keep changing their style, the guitar player is too self induldgent,they should use the same producer as on their first album, there's too much ambience, there's too much guitar noodling, they've become snobs, they're not as good without the old drummer, they're progressive, they're experimental, they took a riff from some other band, I like them less with each album they put out,etc. That was in reference to all bands not just The Mars Volta.

That kinda review irritates me because it's a bunch of garbage. I wish those kinda people would just stick to their MTV lifestyles and leave the real music to those who are true fans and are more open minded. I don't know why it bugs me so much it's not like I'm defending them because I know them on some personal level it's just that some people just don't get it. I'm tired of everyone disecting the music and the musicians. All they want to do is entertain us, not create some sort of musical doctorine that should be discussed as though one was attending a seminar. As a musician I understand the need to experiment and branch out so the music making process doesn't become stale. Do you really want your favorite band to constantly repeat themselves and never evolve. People please I beg of you quit writing these cliche pointless reviews. As for me I'm through writting about this subject for as long as I live. Omar & Cedric have been making music for quite some time now. Let's allow the professionals to do their thing and the rest of you can either tune in or tune out.

When At the Drive-In broke up, two bands came out of it, Sparta and The Mars Volta. I have a couple albums by Sparta. They're pretty solid if unexceptional hardcore/punk rock. Despite their more mainstream sound, they're overshadowed by their unique and more eccentric counterparts. There's been a bit of a backlash against The Mars Volta's increasingly weird and meandering music, as evidenced in declining critical acclaim, but if nothing else, De-Loused is a hard-rocking, original creation. They are known for very long tracks that have nothing but strange noises for minutes at a time, but their first full-length keeps that to a minimum as they focus on real music. The lyrics are strange and seemingly strings of random words thrown together, but there apparently is meaning, the whole thing being an obscure concept album about a character based on a friend of the band members who committed suicide after a drug-induced coma.

"Son et Lumiere" is an atmospheric intro that segues nicely into "Inertiatic ESP", the only song I've really heard before. It's fast-paced and shows the epitome of what the high-pitched vocalist can do for a song. There's a chaotic sound that permeates most of the songs, and makes it seem more urgent and maybe better than its true, objective quality. "Drunkship of Lanterns" shows off their more latin-influenced side which is just as interesting as the more progressive stuff. "Eria Tarka" has one of the more infectious vocal parts. "Cicatriz ESP" is the longest track and is the biggest hint of what's to come with the band, having an extensive section of jamming and ambience before coming back to finish the song. Flea's strong baseline pulls it forward to the explosive chorus. It's interesting how each song is sufficiently unique to be memorable while still always sharing the same interesting vision of what good rock sounds like. Of the eight real songs on the record, "Televators" is the least instantly entertaining, but is still a solid, slower song. "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" ends the album in one of the best ways I've ever heard, with an intense climax of starting and stopping guitars backing passionate vocals. It really makes you feel like you just finished listening to something great. It's a bit hard to define, but I think anyone with an inclination towards any of the aspects could like it.

Mind Blowing experience.......2007-04-16

The first time I heard the Mars Volta I had just came back from a party. A friend of mine strongly recommended that I listen to this album. She popped it in and I was taken somewhere and I have yet to return. This album isn't a background CD, it DEMANDS to be listened to. Even more so it demands to be experienced. Sit back, lay down, let yourself be taken.

This may sound like entering into a sacrilegious experience, but if you are ready take the plunge and listen to this amazing album.

Best Live Album I've Ever Purchased.......2007-02-08

Title says it all. This is the most amazing live album I've ever bought. From the harder riffs on Ground On Down and Excuse Me Mr. to the softer soulful Not Fire, Not Ice this album is amazing. Then there's Please Bleed, The Drugs Don't Work, Walk Away, and Roses From My Friends. If these songs don't tear at your heart then you've never been in love or music just might not be for you. Along with Blessed To Be A Witness they are some of the most powerfully moving songs I've ever listened to and the live recordings just add to it. I have nothin bad to say about this except that even at 25 songs IT'S TOO SHORT! I wanted even more live songs!!! Just an incredible piece of work. Buy it.

this recording doent fully convey the essence of his concerts. there are better recordings of each song one can find on morpheus or limewire. It is worth the money spent however, i just found that there were a lot more worthy performances of his out there.

Harper is one of the most eclectic and soulful artists that I've heard in my life and each time I listen to this live concert, it turns me inside out. When I am unable to understand my rage, my pain or pride, my bleeding, my state of mourning, my yearning for a lover, I play Woman in You, and I howl (shamelessly) along with Ben Harper, without censoring my fall and then my rise.
"Like a King" is one of the most harrowing songs, it goes back to the roots, an old gospel in form with a new story of another black man slipping into the cracks of this system. Originally written by Maya Angelou ("Still I Rise"), Harper added his own words, politicizing the song furthermore by introducing the name of King. "You may write me down in history / With your bitter, twisted lies, / You may trod me in the very dirt / But still, like dust, I'll rise." The gospel is dedicated to Martin L. King and Rodney King, both victims of white American terrorism. "You may shoot me with your words, / You may cut me with your eyes, / You may kill me with your hatefulness, / But still, like air, I'll rise." The soul of this song is old and new at the same time. It's meaningful in many ways, and the broken down chords are slow and grave. I weep each time I listen to "Like a King," and I bleed with Harper, because that's the only way to dig his music.

Best Live Album.......2006-07-01

If you have never heard any Ben Harper, or if you are the world's biggest Ben fan...this is the album for you! The double disc set really shows off Ben's versatility, grace, and style. This is one of my favorite albums of all time...it always makes me feel like I'm right at the show.

ben harper plays the most thougtful music out today, but more importantly, his voice and his melodies really stand out as on-key and haunting, lifting and light. some of my favorites are glory and consequence (very lenny kravitz meets led zepplin)and the drugs dont work (tearjerker).

Worth the time !!!!!!

The Mars Volta puts out some of the most complex, thought-provoking, and lyrically charged music that I have heard in the last 10 years. The beauty of their style is that it can't be criticized, because they don't claim to be a part of any genre...it is simply music at its rawest core element.

In line with this description, Amputechture delivers just as much, if not more, than their previous offerings. It's style is unpredictable, yet captivating. The jazz influence can be heard in almost every track. Some songs verge on becoming monotonous, until a slight riff change or new vocal is thrown in at exactly the right moment, and makes it perfect.

Their total disregard for "what sells" and making chart-topping music is probably what keeps their music fresh and innovative. This is easily the best album of 2006 if you're into non-mainstream, real music. Otherwise, go buy Incubus/Maroon 5/Weezer or something.

Sounds like the singer got his nutz caught in a meat grinder. I love high pitched singers voices but this guy has to go. Music is o.k. but super wanky without enough substance to make it worth the while. Take 'em or leave 'em kids, you know where I stand.

This album redeemed them for Frances.

A continuation of The Mars Volta's stunning innovation, while not straying too far from their classic style. There is a stunning new touch in this album: "Asilos Magdalena", a heart-wrenching, tragic, spanish ballad, as tonal as they come, with the strongest cadential points heard in any of the albums thus far.

The album is a continuous study of Cedric's impressive (awe-inspiring) range, the band's famous stepwise bass lines, super-rhythmic melodies set to abnormal meters, and beautifully incoherent (though barely dissonant) guitar riffs.

The lyrics continue to shock, strewn with raw physical imagery of both human and animal body parts (see: album title "amputechture", song titles "viscera eyes" and "vermicide", and cover art), and Christian-dogmatic references/commentary (see: song titles "vicarious atonement" and "day of the baphomets").

Deloused set our expectations high, but the true fan will not be disappointed in Amputechture.

I like this recording very much. The Mars Volta has a fantastic approach to music making. They are creative with effects and have long jam sessions with very good playing. Like a modern, more heavy metal Pink Floyd, innovative and slow burning. Doesn't get boring or start sounding the same half way through the album.

I bought this CD to use in my classroom as listening examples. I'm not just a super big fan of some of the performances, but they are all good and for the price you can't beat it. That's why I gave it 5 stars. It's worth more than it costs by far.

This is a who's-who of great pieces of music you have heard all of your life, and never knew the names and stories! I listened to it over and over in the car and had my own concert! A friend borrowed it to add music to his Home Movies and it was perfect!

Good Music at a Great Price.......2004-03-06

I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.
