Customer Reviews:
Precise performances of festive music.......2006-08-11
This anthology of early Christmas music provides a refreshing alternative to traditional seasonal releases, introducing the newcomer to these works with a representative and well contrasted programme. The performances - by a much reduced Oxford Camerata - are carefully executed and well-balanced, if perhaps not authoritative, and a bargain at this price.
From a musicological viewpoint, there are, however, a few points worthy of mention. Firstly, it must be admitted that there is a certain degree of artistic licence with the title "Medieval Carols" given the inclusion of 2 Renaissance works in the programme - 'Riu, riu, chiu' (from 'Villancicos de diversos autores' [1556] but here craftily attributed to "traditional") and 'Gaudete!' (correctly indicated as of 15th century origin, but in fact here performed as in the extant version from 'Piae Cantiones', 1582). In addition, whilst the 'Agincourt' carol may draw attention to the varying functions served by the Medieval carol, it is textually at odds with the rest of the programme (commemorating Henry V's famous 1415 victory there). Lastly, it seems a shame that here - as on so many other recordings of pre-Baroque Christmas music - texts and pronunciation are modernised, a fact exacerbated by some peculiar word-underlay in some of the editions.
Still, the CD is well worth owning for the music alone (particularly at this price) and goes some way to reminding us that Christmas is more than merely a secular family occasion.

Carnage, Sin, Penance, Painful Love... It's all here..........2004-08-15
This CD commemorates the eight hundreth anniversary of King Richard the First's coronation in Westminster Abbey. The world then bled the blood of the Crusades, and Richard himself soon called the Third Crusade to regain the Holy Cross from the Muslim armies near Nazareth. War, death, and uncertaintly hung over everything. Happiness came in short bursts, if at all. The songs on this CD, sung in Latin and French, reflect the times of their composition:
The world declining into ruin,
proving by many signs that it is collapsing,
exposes its deceitfulness
and
Death has harshly raged within your borders,
and now you can offer no deeds
as resistance to the assault of Death;
therefore enter into grief
always intent on lamentation.
No instruments adorn the singing on this CD. Soloists or groups of two to four singers perform each piece, sometimes overlapping melodies and harmonies with dazzling technicality. Each track glows with vocal virtuosity. The effect heightens with each successive listen.
Humans may never come closer to time travel than the words and music of the past, and this CD exudes the feeling of a different time. Not surprising considering that the compositions date from approximately 1170 to 1190. Some of the dates remain unknown, along with many of the composer's names. Nonetheless, some names appear, such as Gace Brulé, Blondel, and 'Li Chastelain de Couci'.
Apart from destruction and the ubiquitous medieval Christian themes of sin and redemption, the CD also includes another theme associated with medieval times: love. The songs sung in French mainly concern love of a painful medieval kind:
Nature has never endowed anything
with more beauty.
For her I shall continue the tradition
of Aeneas and Paris,
of Tristan and Pyramus,
of all whom loved long ago.
Now I shall be their ally,
And now I pray to God above,
That I might share their fate.
Strangely, King Richard receives only one direct reference. 'In Occasu Sideris' seems to foreshadow Richard's reign, but does not mention his coronation. In a sense the title of the CD misleads; the music here represents music of the era, not necessarily music performed at Richard's actual coronation ceremony. The CD book does not delineate the how or why behind the compilation of the songs apart from their common date range. This does not detract from the incredible music. So, listen to this CD as a great representation of the music of the early twelfth century. After all, Richard probably enjoyed most of these songs in his lifetime.
Hauntingly lovely music.......1998-10-01
Sung with a high level of precision, this music is very engaging.

This excellent recording is both fun and informative in its skillfully performed program of more than two dozen songs, carols, and rounds from medieval and Renaissance England. The selections are drawn from three albums recorded during the 1960s for the Argo label. The performances--of both familiar and little-known tunes--are sung and played by some of England's most acclaimed musicians, including tenor Robert Tear, harpist Osian Ellis, the London Brass Ensemble, and period instrumentalist David Munrow. Among the highlights are "Foweles in the frith," a fascinating 13th-century six-part canon; "Nowell: Dieus vous garde," a highly syncopated antiphonal 15th- century choral piece; and the gentle lullaby "Lullay, lullow: I saw a sweete seemly sight," sung by two boy trebles. The albums' original, first- rate liner notes are included. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Quite charming.......2003-06-02
This material ranges from the superlative to the dull. But the vast majority is delightful, winningly sung and played, with the big names of that era featured: Simon Preston, Ian Partridge, Robert Tear, and the incomparable David Munrow.
This CD is the contents of two mid 60s LPs with a few tidbits from another tossed in. Maybe it's just familiarity, but the seelctions I prefer are those from the LP I had. Great to hear again, in a clear, light transfer. The recording is quite good; try Deo gracias Anglia with the headphones...just stellar.
Stuff you won't readily hear elsewhere; performance ideas have changed for this music, mostly downhill, I would argue. This is joyous, jolly, full of verve and merthe.

Good Representative Recording of the Early Renaissance.......2000-07-11
It is difficult to find good recordings of early Renaissance music - most recordings seem to go strait from the Medieval to the High Renaissance leaving this very interesting century untouched. This recording has a good variety of sacred and secular works (both vocal and instrumental) by the big names of the century: Dunstable, Power, Binchois, and Dufay. If you want to know the work that lead up to Josquin, I highly recommend this CD.
The liner notes do not explain the music or offer translations (thus the rating of 4 stars instead of 5). If you are intested in this time, get the CD along with a book on early Renaissance music. It is definitely worth the effort to explore.
