Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love Millie Jackson's sexy rap.......2007-05-10

There are two reasons why soul diva Millie Jackson is not as big a star as Aretha Franklin: 1) Her fondness for x-rated material, which often kept her songs from being played on the radio; and 2) her penchant for bad album covers, such as the one in which she's sitting on a toilet. But when Millie gets her groove on, there's no one to match her, not even mighty 'Re. A good example is "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Wanna Be Right," an old Luther Ingram song (also covered by Barbara Mandrell) that Millie enhances with a lengthy rap about the plight of the "other woman". Millie's sexy rap alone makes volume 8 of "Smooth Grooves" worth the price of the CD.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Collection.......2006-12-11

Smooth Grooves: A Sensual Collection, Vol. 8 it isn't as consistent as earlier volumes in the series, but it contains a number of forgotten quiet storm classics from the late '70s and early '80s, including Levert's "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind," and The Emotions' "Don't Ask My Neighbors," Miki Howard's "Come Share My Love" and Larry Graham's "When We Get Married," among several other winners. One of my favorite songs on the CD is Atlantic Starr's Let's Get Closer but the standout on this CD is Who Can I Run to by the Jones Girls. The stunning ballad enjoyed a wide, spacious mix that generously showcased both the great lead vocals of Shirley Jones and her sisters' sweet harmonies. It stands as the Jones Girls' best ballad. The closing riff is sufficiently low-key and melodramatic with muted trumpet and soft flute. Xscape's 1995 gold cover pretty much adhered to the Jones Girls' original unsurpassed version.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of the best volumes.......2006-06-27

If you want to get well acquainted with the Smooth Grooves series, it is best to find something from the first four volumes.

One surprise in this set, though, was Herbie Hancock's "Stars in Your Eyes." It was not something that I knew was by him, and it sounds very different from a lot of what he has written before. (Much of what he does is find a theme over the first measure of the song and then use is *all the way through*-- "Watermelon Man" or "Cantaloupe Island.")

This is, however, listenable if you just want to sit back and chill out after a day at work or are doing something that requires a mellow mood. (It is not seduction music.)

4 out of 5 stars Fair slow jams collection .......2005-03-30

Rhino typically throws together great hit-packed collections but this is somewhat of an exception. The biggest chart hit here is #1 R&B hit "(Pop,Pop,Pop,Pop) Goes my Mind" from Levert. Outside of that, there are 3 R&B top 10s and one that just missed ("Magic Man" hit #11 for Robert Winters and Fall in 1980) with the rest being album tracks.

The great Stylistics soundalike "Country Girl (You're my Everything)"[didn't chart] astounds with some thrilling falsetto work. Millie Jackson's epic album cover of "(If Loving You is Wrong) I Don't Want to be Right"[didn't chart] brings every married woman's worst fears to life as Millie points out the problems with chasing someone who's already taken but then goes on to a laundry list of why she'd RATHER be with a married man..'the sweetest thing about the whole sitation is..that when you go to the laundromat you don't have to wash nobody's funky drawers but your own'. An album track from Atlantic Starr is wonderful ("Let's Get Closer")[didn't chart]. The Levert track ("(Pop,Pop,Pop,Pop) Goes my Mind") was a deserved #1 on the R&B charts.

Lesser tracks are one hit wonder Black Ice with "Blind Over You"[didn't chart] (their dance number "Shake Down Pt. 1" was a minor hit), a Patti LaBelle cover of "If You Don't Know me by Know"[#79 R&B,1986] from a 1985 concert in D.C., is pretty but it won't make you forget Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes 1972 hit rendition. "Come Share My Love" was a pretty sizable hit (#5 R&B,1986) but just doesn't have the timeless quality it needs to still sound good these days.

BOTTOM LINE:
If you're just looking for slow dance music, there are better collections. But if you're looking to find some "new" songs you may not know, the low charters (and non charters) here hide some gems.

4 out of 5 stars Classic NRG.......2003-07-29

Good selection from the vaults of TSR. All but the last 3 are the org. US 12" mixes. The last 2 seem to be misplaced on this CD. Weekend sounds like a rip-off of Paul Parker, Eastbound Expressway, with Kraftwerk on acid. Thankfully its short. Most of the songs come from Europe via the Record Shack label in England. The disc whould have received 5 stars if they whould have tossed out the last 2 fillers and placed the org. mix of "Stop". That tune had an incredble break not found here. Overall, great party tracks from mid-eighties. Another good sourse of this style is "Record Shack Presents" 1&2. Both have 2 discs of the same 80's style and full length. Well worth the money if able to find them.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SELECTION - ORIGINAL 12" VERSIONS-ORIGINAL STARS.......2003-04-19

5 out of 5 stars A slice of 80's NRG.......2002-03-26

Perfect collection of 80s hi-energy songs all in their 12" extended glory! A few of these extended mixes are not available anywhere else but on this disc. From the Sylvester-ish soul of Shawn Benson's "Secluded" to the quirky fun of Magazine 60's "Don Quichotte", you can't go wrong with this collection of fun NRG songs.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I Have Not Yet Heard!.......2001-12-21

I have yet to hear this CD, although, I was there on the dance floor when these songs were being played. I can hardly wait to get it in my hands, er... uh... on the CD player. Just seeing the titles of these songs brings back memories of fun in the 1980's.

5 out of 5 stars Second best thing to a Box set.......2001-04-16

While its a nice idea to have all Millie Jakson charted singles in one place, nevertheless she was a singer who achieved her best work on several concept albums,so it would be much better to have her work in Box set.For example, her ground-breaking "Caught Up" album in these circumstances is presented only with one song (and without famous "rap") so it doesnt not show the depth of the whole story.Just as Marvin Gaye cannot be understand just though his hit singles,to listen Millie's original albums in full lenght is required listening to understand what she achieved. What is obvious here is that she was fantastic singer from the start - her very first single "Child Of God" is still one of her best songs - and that she kept her own high standards though 17 albums presented here in a nutshell. As I own some of the listed albums,I know for sure that "singles" are perhaps the most obvious, but not neccesary the best selection. This is a very good compilation, but its just a glimpse to what made Millie great - as for me,I would continue to look for her original albums because they are supposed to be heard as they were, with or without hit singles.

5 out of 5 stars On with the show.......2007-06-03

It's 1968, and a british band named Idle Race (with future ELO star Jeff Lynne) comes out with an album titled "Birthday Party."

Almost 40 years later, it's been re-released, it's just as amazing as it was back then. If you like the Beatles or ELO, you should like this.

Every charming pop song on here has Jeff Lynnes seal of approval.
All with his witty talent.

If you haven't heard this yet, you're in for a sweet Idle Race treat.

Buy it.

1 out of 5 stars A sonic mess..........2007-05-12

What an amazing album! Unfortunately, the sound on this release is horribly mastered. Too much digital hiss removal and heavy handed EQ spoils some brilliant music. I highly suggest the recently re-released Idle Race EMI CD set. It has problems of its own but is enjoyable nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Disco for the masses.......2003-12-11

This was one of the first cds that I bought as a kid and I still love it. The techno selections are boring and primitive. However, the disco selections give this compilation its 4 stars. If you are looking for the 12" versions of some of the best disco songs, you'll find them right here. Personally, my favorite is "Danger" by The Flirts, and a still-popular song by La Flavour: "Mandolay." I'm also picky when it comes to the artwork, and the cd booklet reminds me of my childhood. In a few words, this cd is worth it, so try finding it here on Amazon or music store.

I was originally looking for the song Whirly Girl by OXO and stumbled across this compilation album. I've seen other compilation albums with Whirly Girl, but the other 80's songs were, well, in a word, yuk. This one has most of the songs I absolutely loved (and had forgotten about). Would make an excellent workout or party cd. Heck, I may have a party just to show off....

5 out of 5 stars One Night in Bangcock!!.......2002-09-19

That song was the reason I got this. But i was also blessed with Pass the Duchie...

This is a great collection of new wave feel good hits of the 80's and is a hit at all my parties The sound is great and the collection is solid.

    thumbs up!

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A link between soul and disco.......2001-03-21

On her first album,Millie Jackson had to fight against violins and unaproppriate,cheerful,Motown-like music backing. On the second ("It Hurts So Good") she found great producer (Brad Shapiro) who understand her and moved her further in funk teritory, perfectly suitable for her strong, passionate voice. On this, her third LP from 1974. Millie finally blossomed in a full throated soul singer who could cover Gladys Knight's "Letter Full Of Tears" and actually sound really great - althought its strange to hear this song without The Pips at the backing vocals, she uses her vocal similarity to Knight with a great advantage (and being somehow more earthy than Knight,Jackson is my favourite, sorry Gladys!). The first song ("How Do You Feel The Morning After") is really beautiful, but it's the last, funny and chunky "In The Wash" that points a direction Jackson would explore with a big artistic succes on her next album "Caught Up",the subject of anger, betrayal and defiance. And yes, having Cissy Houston for backing vocals helps as well...
