Album Description

Tomas Kalnoky, sole songwriter of CATCH 22's cult classic "Keasbey Nights" formed STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO two years ago with original CATCH 22 members Josh Ansley and Jamie Egan. "Everything Goes Numb" is a natural progression of "Keasbey Nights" showcasing not only energetic horn parts and fabulous harmonizing vocals, but intelligent lyrics focusing on the angstridden lives of young adults.

The anticipation for new work from Tomas has snowballed over the last two years. Hungry fans will finally have the opportunity to hear the material that they have been waiting for. Kalnoky's songwriting has had an incredibly significant impact on ska's biggest sub genre, ska-punk. "Everything Goes Numb" will quickly become an underground classic and must have album for all fans of horn rock.

"Keasbey Nights" is also an important CD when examining the evolution of ska. Kalnoky's songwriting was revolutionary in that he successfully combined the upbeat, reggae ska style with faster in-your-face punk.

3 out of 5 stars Most musically talented ska band ever formed.......2007-07-12

This cd totally blew me away. It has slamming fast horn lines and manages to mix things up in all thier songs. I'm in band so I noticed things like split parts and insturments switching parts. They used creciandos and so many other cool things. Saddest song, Heres to Life, Everything went numb and A Better Place a Better Time are the highlights of the album. You are probally wondering at this point why I gave it three stars instead of five. Lots of people don't get it but musisicians don't need to curse. It doesnt add to the musical quality or over all effectiveness of the album. How many people but an album because it curses? In fact there are more people offended by it then impressed by it. I ended up deleting half the album from my computer. But other than that it blew me away. Incredible band.

5 out of 5 stars Will restore your faith in humanity.......2007-04-07

This album is a remarkable breath of fresh air in the current stagnant music industry. Much of what it on the radio and sold by major labels it so overly processed and reused that it has no more apeal to me than a can of spam. By comparrison, Everything Goes Numb is like a fine seak. The members of Streetlight manifesto are all so increadibly talented and experienced with their instruments that the music is complex and replayable to a ridiculous degree. As a bass guirarist, their bassist's work amazed me with it's complexity. Frontman Thomas Kalnoky's songwriting and vocals are amazingly catchy and meaningfull. If I am ever feeling depressed, the song A Better Place, A Better Time never fails to help. You owe it to yourself to listen to this amazing band. I cannot wait to hear their next album.

5 out of 5 stars I AM SHOCKED!.......2006-12-16

Now this is real music! This is one of the best ska albums to come out ever next to "Keasby Nights". I hate everything mainstream and am always looking for some new stuff to listen to. This is good! I am usually into street punk(Dead Kennedys, Subhumans), but this is incredible! THE BEST SONG IS "ANOTHER PLACE, ANOTHER TIME". This is great ska!

2 out of 5 stars More of the same...more of the same........2006-11-29

Okay--let's start from the top. All the songs sound exactly the same. Not only do they all sound alike, but they sound pretty much exactly like the songs on Keasbey Nights. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't suck so much, but I think it would just be best to GIVE THE BAND SOME VALIUM SO THEY WOULD SLOW DOWN JUST A BIT!! I hate hearing music that's so fast that I can't follow it! It's way too fast, way too drawn-out, and way too complicated. I'm sure that everyone, given the chance, would flaunt their talents briefly to show the extent of their abilities, but it's like this album is a constant horn solo battle--everyone working against each other to make a very staccato, very sporadic, very annoying sound.

Let's not forget the band's frontman, Tomas Kalnoky. He left Catch 22 and briefly quit playing music (He went to art school in Georgia before making Streetlight Manifesto) because he didn't have complete control over the songwriting process. Forgive me for saying so, but bands are a co-operative effort with everyone pitching in their ideas to make a sound that represents an entire band--not just one person. So, who told me all of this stuff? None other than Tomas Kalnoky himself, in July of 2004. He has shown that he only knows how to write one kind of song--the songs that are on Keasbey Nights and Everything Goes Numb. It's all bland, it's all way too fast, and it all sucks.

I'm giving this album 2 stars instead of 1 because the band members (minus Tomas) are very talented individuals and have a boatload of potential...they are just led by a crappy songwriter.

5 out of 5 stars this band kicks. end of story.......2006-08-28

This band is the fourth and in my opinion best project tomas kalnoky has been involved with. This album is one of the only albums i can listen to in its entirety and not skip a track. i know the lyrics to every song and some of the beats in a way. its a great album.

1. Everything went numb:9/10 great song.. good start to any day great intro great verse great chorus.. end of story
2. That'll be the day:9/10 they opened with this when i saw them and the crowd reaction was just amazing.. great message
3.Point/Counterpoint:9/10 kind of a continuation of Keasbey Nights, this song is what got me into SM
4. If and When We Rise: 8/10 when i first heard this song i would usually skip over it but its become one of my most favorite tracks
5. A Better Place, A Better Time: 9/10 a bit long but its great, slow opening and slowly picks up speed and erupts into a nice ska tune
6. We Are the Few: 9/10 prolly best song to see/hear live. kind of a tribal unity type thing i guess lol
7. Failing Flailing: 9/10 great first minute of pure instrumental, the end of the song with the sort of round robin thing is pretty cool too
8.Here's to life: 9/10 my second favorite track. heart pounding adrenaline with a beautiful bridge section with the horns
9. A Moment of Silence: 9/10 the beginning of the "doubletrack" i guess u could call it A Moment Of Silence/Violence.. my favorite song by this band.. basically about how catch 22 got famous off of toms songs and whatnot.. nice and slow track beautiful lines
10. A Moment of Violence: 9/10 after AMOS sets down a slow pace this song comes in and just knocks you over.. when they played these two live.. ppl who werent familiar with the band didnt realize what was about to erupt and were taken by surprise as the pits exploded.. great song to pump adrenaline
11. Saddest Song: 9/10 an Anti-Suicide song.. a popular theme in kalnoky's writing. on the demo the song ends and the horns do some little cool jazzy stuff
12. The Big Sleep: 9/10 a love song no doubt.. a good song to witness live while everyone shouts out the "na na na na na na"'s

in conclusion... this cd is the best thing that has happened to the east coast.. nay, planet earth. haha just buy the cd

Fabulous. I was very please to see that I was sent the 1st edition!

4 out of 5 stars Another great single from the Boys.......2006-11-26

The Boys surprised some fans when they announced that Numb would be the third single off of Fundamental but Numb was almost included on PopArt and released as a single back in 2003 (the masked cover photo was taken at that time). The single starts off with the demo version of Numb which is quite good. It's a quieter version (less orchestral) compared to the album version. Up next (although the track list says that it's third) is the upbeat 'Party Song' b-side which samples 'That's the Way I Like It' which is quite fun. A minor point, this song does interrupt the mood a little. I would have put 'Girls Don't Cry' here and 'Party Song' on "I'm with Stupid" single, but that's me. Up third is the real gem - 'Bright Young Things' which is absolutely beautiful - just an amazing track. This track was commissioned for the film of the same name back in 2002 but was rejected by the producers which is their loss because this track is wonderful. Lastly, the video for Numb is included which I have to say is completely unique for the Boys: black and white, wintery, russian footage, orbs, etc. It definitely creates the right mood for the song although I never imagined the video looking like this - it completely works. All of these tracks can only be found on this single and no where else. Overall, another great single!

3 out of 5 stars Worth it for the non-LP cuts.......2006-11-24

This CD single includes a video. The video continues the group's concern with communism and post-socialism; an early example of this was their song "My October Symphony" on the "Behavior" disc. Usually the Boys like being all over their videos, but this time you don't see them until the end. Like "Jealousy," and "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk," they did not do much to extend this song from its album version. Culture Club and the Eurythmics never did much with their slow songs either, still you would think the Boys could have done more.

The CD cover clearly says song two is "Bright Young Things" and song three is "Party Song." Yet the second song talks about having a good time all night long and the third song repeats the phrase "bright, young things" several times. I don't know if the CD makers erred or the Boys wanted to be counterintuitive (read: confusing). The second song sounded like it could have been on "Disco 3"; the third song sound like a techno ditty you could hear in many gay clubs in the US or Europe. I didn't love these B-sides as much as I did "It Must Be Obvious" or "The Sound of the Atom Splitting," but they're not bad either. For die-hard Petheads, these two tunes are what make the disc worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars An almost immaculate collection of grunge-driven rock mantra.......2007-06-21

Hammerbox was one of those few rare bands that never got the recognition they deserved. People were too busy raving about Nirvana and Pearl Jam (who partly owed their credentials to Hammerbox, as Mike McCready later joined "The Rockfords", the follow-up to Hammerbox) to notice the small-time club-hopping "other" seattle bands on the scene like Swervedriver, Number One Cup, Pavement, Therapy?, Paw, and of course...Hammerbox.

If you want to know what I really think - I think that Hammerbox should have been in Nirvana's shoes. Now don't get me wrong, I love Nirvana, but they were no better than these guys. Carrie and Co. really showed the grungies how to rock by only spanning two full-length albums (the first of which was sold exclusively by the band at clubs on their C/Z label).

And a band that was fronted by a female singer with more balls (excuse me, had to say it) than most male alternative rock singers was not exactly an every day thing. Give credit where credit is due.

"Numb" stands alone as one of the greatest alternative records to surface in the 90s. Noteable tracks on this cut include "Hole", "Hed", "Outside", "When 3 is 2", "Trip", "No", "Simple Passing", and "Anywhere But Here". I darn near named the whole album. Well I guess that just goes to show you.

Dare I rank this in the same branch of top alternative rock records with Siamese Dream, Ten, and Core? I dare. And I won't take back my word, either. Hammerbox succeded in a time when MTV was worth watching.

If you can find it, pick this record up. That along with any Swervedriver, Therapy?, Dinosaur Jr., and Sonic Youth. Don't forget "Goodness", and "The Rockfords" - the two bands including Carrie Akre AFTER Hammerbox faded away.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent example of the evolution of 90's grunge.......2006-04-09

Excellent album. High energy, full of a tension and rawness that is tempered by superior musicianship and intelligent compositions. This band can rock with the best of them...vocals and guitar work are powerful, creative, yet much more polished than many of their fellow Seattle bands of the time. Don't overlook the rythym section either...drums are crisp and organic, and the bass is rock solid, occasionally coming forward with a silky smoothness and clean attack reminiscent of Geddy Lee's most recent work. Overall, superior individual musicianship blended perfectly, resulting in a wall of music greater than the sum of the parts. Numb is better than their self-titled debut...too bad this band did not stick together and keep going.

5 out of 5 stars Not much to add........2005-12-31

Everyone is right. If there existed a "Greatest Hits Few Have Ever Heard" compilation "Numb" would be on it.

People do remember, though - Hammerbox reunited for a single, sold-out show at EMP in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Why didn't this band become huge?.......2005-08-20

How Hammerbox never made it big is a mystery to me. No one I talk to remembers the band or has heard this CD. That's their loss. I love this CD. The roaring, impassioned guitars and Carrie Akres dynamic voice blended together perfectly. The songs were just the right length and tempo to make great rock songs. I agree with another reviewer that this was different than anything else coming out of Seattle at that time and it was so much better. If only we had more than a couple of CDs to remember them by. 12 years later and Hammerbox still blows me away every time I listen to it. If I wear my CD out, I hope I'll still be able to buy a new copy.

4 out of 5 stars Hammerbox - Numb.......2005-06-18

An excellent album. I am just amazed at the anonymity that shrouds this band and particularly this album. Lost somewhere amongst "Nevermind", "Ten" and "Dirt" I suppose. None the less, Carrie Akre has a fine rock and roll voice and demonstrates it very effectively here. Most of what she has recorded is very listenable (Goodness, Rockfords), but for me Hammerbox was the best; more power, less pop. San Diego, CA

5 out of 5 stars Haters..........2007-04-15

This has to be one THE greatest collaborations in the history of music. I think anyone can appreciate this if they had a wide range of musical tastes. Basically, if you like all kinds of music than this album is for you. Were talking' about the meshing of hits from two artists here! If you like one or the other or both, then this will knock you socks off.

1 out of 5 stars A horrible move for Linkin Park.......2006-03-10

Numb was a really good Linkin Park song until this Jay-Z mix came and brutally murdered it. Jay-Z is one of the worst rappers out there (I hate all rap, but he really rots) and the touch he brings to this song is equivalent to nails on a chalkboard. This song didn't belong in the Top 40 at all! Numb without Jay-Z did, though. Get Meteora and never get this single.

5 out of 5 stars numb/encore.......2005-10-25

You know, there's a reason that Linkin Park and Jay-Z decided to put "Numb" in front of "Encore" in the song title, and that's because "Numb" is the main song and "Encore" is the, well, encore to Jay-Z's hit. That is the main reason why these two songs work so well together. Combining Chester's heavenly voice with Jay-Z's smooth rap, this is undoubtedly the best song on "Collision Course".
Overall rating: 100/5

5 out of 5 stars Numb / Encore is the best LPJZ song.......2005-07-29

Ha ha ha... funny, saying Numb ruins Encore and Encore ruins Numb... I disagree. This song was the best in Collision Course, and it's best here, too. The album version brings in Encore, from The Black Album (a nice round-up song) with Numb, from Meteora (the conclusion to Meteora). It shows how these two songs are pulled out to connect into one of the best songs I've ever heard.

The instrumental version describes how you can actually make an original background music instead of simply attaching a Numb background music. Compare Numb and Numb / Encore; you'll see the difference in the music. Numb has the special touch (listen and you'll know) only in the beginning and end, but Numb / Encore has it in all chorus parts.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Rap/Rock Album..........2005-03-14

This is one of those rare moments where rap music and rock combine. I expected most people to flip out because (most) ghetto people hate rock and goth/punk people and (most) punk/goth people hate rap and ghetto people. My brother loves this CD, and is begining to like Linkin Park. I personally love this album also, especially "Jigga What/Faint". I recommend this if you like Linkin Park, Jay-Z, or both.

4 out of 5 stars a floydian wedding.......2007-04-19

I was searching everywhere for a way to include Pink Floyd in my very traditional wedding. Instead of walking down the aisle to "Here Comes the Bride", I'm using this version of "Comfortably Numb". I love this CD, but should warn you not to expect the "mind trip" that was Pink Floyd. And yes I am a huge Pink Floyd fan. This is a CD you could put on at dinner at your grandmother's and have her think it is beautiful. Worth giving a chance.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Expect Pink Floyd.......2006-02-08

I enjoy string quartets and looked forward to this. Whereas Mozart, Beethoven and other classical or romantic composers are the masters of quartets due to their counterpoint and fugue, Pink Floyd music does not translate into string quartets. There is no power here, no dynamics; all necessary to Pink Floyd music. I kept wanting some electrification! The piano is capable of power, but not allowed to sound off in this recording and only provides an accompaniment to the mellow strings. It was boring. Does not have the complexity of the masters to maintain interest. Go to the classics with all their structure to enjoy string quartets for listening pleasure. Or, this could be a nice change for background at a dinner or reception where it's not cool to blast the speakers with real Pink Floyd.

5 out of 5 stars A must have........2005-10-23

Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but this is my favorite CD! The quality of the music is excellent. Even if you are not a Pink Floyd fan, this is still an excellent CD.

1 out of 5 stars Just awful.......2005-06-15

I am an avid collector of all things Pink Floyd, including tribute albums. Of course none of them live up to the real thing, but this 'tribute' really does a terrible disservice to their music. For something of this ilk, go with either the Symphonic Pink Floyd "Us & Them" or the Royal Philharmonic Tribute. Only buy this one if you own EVERY other tribute CD ever made for Pink Floyd's music.

1 out of 5 stars Suck.......2004-07-12

Well, poor forgery of Pink Floyd. Just slight resemblence of
past Pink Floyd.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Still Suffering is much better.......2006-02-27

I was highly anticipating this album when it came out. It has it's moments (2 tracks) but overall I was very dissapointed. Still Suffering was great and it still is but "Numb" lacked everything Still Suffering offered. It's actually hard to believe that this is Klank. Anyways get Still Suffering instead of Numb.

2 out of 5 stars Ouch, disapointing........2003-02-08

Klank had so much going for him, then he pulls
away from real record companies, real producers,
and real songwriting.

His Still Suffering CD was great. I expected so
much with this album, but I was horribly
disappointed. The only songs worth listening to are
the electronics without vocals. He replaced his
dark, heavy sound for a whiny voiced sissy album.

I think he needs Klay Scott back. Klay Scott was
the one who MADE Still Suffering and Downside
Remixes good. Klank has talent, but he should let
others shape and mold that talent.

So if you like good industrial, get the new
Celldweller CD. It's at CDbaby.com.

Forget this... album.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2001-07-07

I personally enjoy this album more then the first one. The songs re more dfeind on here and have better stability. They are not as heavy in guitar as was on the first album but that void is replaced well with electronics. Anyone who likes industrial rock will find this cd as a must have. Some standout songs include Bleed Me Dry, Blind, and so Very Real.

3 out of 5 stars New Klank CD ventures into new ground. Below expectations.......2000-10-02

With Klank's third release, Numb, Daren Diolosa and his newly formed band move toward a new sound which, while fairly original, sounds much more like later Circle of Dust material than Daren's previous work under the "Klank" moniker. The album is also the first Klank release not produced by Klay Scott, Daren's former bandmate and the mastermind behind Circle of Dust, and it shows.

Numb features Daren's experimentation with a new vocal style, which works ok on some tracks ("Bleed me Dry" and "So Very Real" come to mind) but sounds somewhat whiny and annoying on others like "God?" The title track also experiments with a quasy-rap sound and shows some promise. This CD, while worth buying if you're a Klank fan, will probably not impress most music fans who would be better off starting out with one of Klank's other two albums: the heavier "Still Suffering" or the "Downside Remixes" which features 5 remixes of two tracks off "Still Suffering," both of which are very good.

While not a total flop by any stretch of the imagination, I certainly hope that Klank's followup to Numb will have a more mature sound... and better vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent aggro-electro.......2006-04-28

"christmeister" is a great example of aggro-industrial done right -- imagine skinny puppy's "rabies", ministry's "stigmata" and some of numb's own earlier more soundtrack-oriented work popped into a blender, cyanide-ice cubes popped in, and speed set on "stun". the percussion is heavy and relentless and really sounds "industrial" in its purest sense (lots of clangy noises + pumping drum machine sounds of the era), and the guitars rage with the best of 'em. but interestingly, while the straight songs rock hard, the more ambient tracks are very refined and creepy (and purely electronic) and in the same vein as SP's ambient work (or more recently charlie clouser's SAW scores). this album formed quite an impression on me when i first heard it in 1990 and since it's largely free of industrial cliches other than the expected (screaming distorted vox, etc) it's held up very well over the years. definitely one to get if you're a fan of the electronics / aggro guitar sound of SP's "rabies". BTW unlike a lot of industrial music from 15 years ago the album is excellently-produced and mixed, with a dense yet clear sound, and sounds great over headphones.

5 out of 5 stars Best Numb album.......2004-12-17

I love this CD. Although it is dancey, it is more industrial than other "industrial" bands. It has plenty of effects and samples to keep it interesting. It is very dark but not ridiculously like Wumpscut and VAC can be. All these songs are hits. This came out before EBM lost its industrial influence and became techno music with maybe a vocoder.

5 out of 5 stars Started off like 'puppy' now has their own sound.......2004-06-24

Here's an overlooked and fantastic band for you. Although "Numb" hasn't done a lot of music for a band that's been around as long as FLA, their music is very powerful. I own all six of their albums (at least I think it's six unless they've done one recently I don't know about) and each album is distinctly different and unique from the previous. Starting with the self titled album 'Numb' which sounded a lot like that old feel-good 80s 'puppy' then to 'Christmeister' which in many ways was similar to the sound that 'Ministry' demonstrated in the late 80s. Then there was 'Death on the Installment Plan' which seemed to have blended the previous sounds quite powerfully and uniquely. And now on 'Wasted Sky' Numb's sound seems to have completely evolved into their own. Although the 'puppy' influence may still be there, "Numb" is a band that can be compared to no other. I could say they're like NIN, but more intensely darker, or I could say they're like FLA but more straight forward and danceable. Or I could say they're like VAC, only without all those movie samples. But none of these comparisons do them justice because they have their own sound that has to be heard by each music fan before being labeled. I think this is probably their best album (at least I think it's my favorite), but their later work on 'Blood Meridian' and 'Language of Silence' is great, great stuff too.

5 out of 5 stars Don't you just love it when CD's KICK butt, this one does.......2003-08-19

Hard Core Industrial. All their stuff if great. Kinda sounds like.... NUMB. Heavy Water Factory, Leather Strip, etc. Hope that helps a little

4 out of 5 stars Sounds Like Front Line Assembly.......2003-06-19

As the Title Reads, This Album Definatly Sounds like FLA in some ways, Some of the vocals and some of the guitar work. It Sounds really different from "Blood Meridian". The Vocals just aren't the same. Don't Buy Blood Meridian if you end up liking this album. I like the tracks Effigy, and Driven the most. Over all it's a pretty [cool]Cd and if your into industrial in any way at all You'll probably like this.

4 out of 5 stars Dancey industrial.......2000-01-19

The tunes on this disc are consistently catchy, moody, and incredibly danceable. Blood is a classic in clubs. One drawback is that most of the songs sound very similar; the instrumentation and whispered vocals give them a sameness.

2 out of 5 stars I feel numb now too.......2007-07-17

"Numb" was the third single off the Pet Shop Boy's amazing "Fundamental" CD. That CD is filled with brilliant dance and pop music, and I loved the first two singles ("I'm with Stupid," "Minimal"). On the other hand, we have "Numb", which is perhaps best known among PSB fans because it wasn't written by Chris or Neil. Instead "Numb" was contributed by ballad-meister supreme, Diane Warren. The Boys have sung a tremendous variety of songs during their career, and they have excelled at vastly differing styles. Sadly, "Numb" is a poor fit - perhaps their worst single ever, with the possible exception of "DJ Culture."

The song manages to be overly melodramatic and drab at the same time. The dreary lyrics are not helped by the orchestration; "Numb" is one of the few PSB songs where having an over-blown musical arrangement simply doesn't work. I agree with another reviewer here in saying that the superior "Integral" should have been the next single. Indeed, "Numb" was a bit of a flop, only managing to make #23 on the U.K. chart; only "Was It Worth It" from 1991 did worse (#24).

Unfortunately, the only other song included on this CD is a live version of "West End Girls." Now, I love "West End Girls," and the live version is pretty good. However, pairing such a weak single with a live version of an old song just isn't very inspiring. Plus, this version of "West End Girls" is now available on "Concrete." Overall, this CD is for PSB completists only, and even they may be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars High Quality PSB.......2007-03-29

As the Pet Shop Boys have matured in their writing they have moved from superior pop stars who range from catchy and clever through stirring and uplifting into stunning musicians who rank with some of the best modern composers around. This song, Numb, from their latest album Fundamental, is an example of finely nuanced writing that transcends pop and stands as the kind of mood piece that used to be known as lieder in classical circles. Its powerful and deceptively simple melody perfectly underlines a lyric that could stand alone as poetry alongside a T S Eliot or a Gertrude Stein in any modern anthology. Both the boys are hitting at the top of their game in this outstanding track. I'm not sure how it will chart alongside today's more conventional offerings, but it is a great sign that the record company was willing to highlight this first class modern music and back the remixes and versions offered on the two singles releases Numb Part 1 & Numb Part 2. My only regret is that they couldn't have been a little more generous and given us the contents on one disc. As usual, however, the additional rarities on a PSB single end up being some of the highlights of my collection. Thanks Boys.....keep it up.

1 out of 5 stars I'm shocked.......2006-12-21

I really can't believe the Pet Shop Boys would release THIS song as a single off their stellar album, "Fundamental." This song is the weakest song on the entire album. It's so slow that I want to fall asleep, and if anyone has a mental illness or suicidal tendencies, I'd highly advise that you don't listen to it.

What the PSB should have done was release INTEGRAL as the next single. I'm still waiting for that one. That would've been the next logical single to come out. With this release of "Numb," that's exactly what my attitude has become to these boys.
