Worked for us!.......2007-07-15

If you are desperate enough that you have started the search for a "soothing sounds" cd, make this purchase. It is not a guarantee that your child will calm but it sure works for my very very fussy 4 month old. I originally bought this cd because my son hated riding in the car. It made the shortest trip dreadful! At home, we used the vacuum to calm him so I figured I would try this. As soon as my son would start to fuss in the car, I would put the cd in and he would nod off to sleep --- it really worked!! Now, I use it as part of our bedtime routine and it has helped my son to relax for bedtime as well --- he previously would fight it. So if you are on the fence about buying this cd, it is definitely worth trying.

Great CD With One Tiny Drawback.......2007-07-06

We got this CD for our fussy little one to help her sleep at night. The CD is really good quality and all the tracks are well recorded. We found that our little one likes the jet engine track the best (who knew!?). The only small problem is that each track has a "fade in" and "fade out" for a few seconds (where the track slowly gets louder at the beginning or softer, fading to silent at the end). This creates a pretty long (relatively speaking) space with no sound if you put one track on repeat as we do. I could see this sudden slience waking some little ones. Luckily unless there just happens to be a loud noise during the lull, ours sleeps on through it. But overall, it does what it says it will - helps our little one sleep uninterupted - and that is the most important thing!

Great Sound Quality.......2007-06-27

I bought Soothing Sounds for Sleep CD because my son is a very light sleeper. He would wake up to the slightest little noise. I turn up the volume to the Highway Hum, put it on repeat, and he sleeps through the phone ringing, people talking, even the doorbell!

All of the sounds are very realistic sounding. this CD could even be used for older children or adults that need help staying asleep! Very soothing!

This CD has been EXCELLENT for my baby. I have used it since he was about a month old. It will sooth him instantly when he cries. He also can tell it is bedtime by hearing the CD. My mother tried to put him to sleep one evening and she said she tried several CD's everytime she put one on he wiggled even more until she put on Hush Little Baby. Put this CD on repeat for the night and you can finally get some rest!!!

Whenever my husband has any issues getting our little one to settle down he plops this cd into the player. It works like a charm. I love the cute titles of the tracks.

The idea here was to put two masters together--one classical cellist, one improvisational singer/sound-effects performer--and voilà! instant amazing, unique, hip--and, hopefully, hit--record. It is July 27, 2007 and Bobby McFerrin is performing solo here in Vancouver, Canada tonight. I almost went to see him, but decided against it at the last minute, owing to a lack of good seats that remained. I may regret it for a long, long time...

In my CD collection are good works by Yo-Yo Ma and very fine ones by Bobby McFerrin, separately. But it was a stroke of great luck that the local library had this incredible CD available when I dropped by tonight, in lieu of the concert, for having these two virtuosos perform together on the same recording is like photosynthesis, the bringing together of powerful forces to trigger a miracle. The miracle is life, the vitality of the artists and their uniquely creative musical expression. Every music lover and musician should give this CD a close listen!!! I can think of no better gauge of the carefree and wide-eyed youth that hopefully still thrives inside, whatever may be your biological age, than this soulfull expose.

This CD is one of my favorites. I give it away and buy another. Playful and fun as well as great music. It never fails to make me laugh. A joy. If you aren't a little silly, don't bother. Kids love it, too.

Yo-Yo keeps on experimental.......2006-03-04

One of the best parts of a genius is to try out of his layers. In this case Yo-Yo tried to go out from the classic, and with a very good singer, in a easy say, as Bobby. They make a very special music between classic and jazz, with some elements of pop.
It's an incredible fusion of strings and vocal strings, in some moments it is not possible to separate them, some times is like a big keyboard directed by a single musician. In a word, they experiment, and the result was incredible.

This is no "Don't Worry, Be Happy".......2005-10-23

Have never been a big Bobby McFerrin fan, probably due to that god-awful, "Don't Worry, Be Happy." But I am a classical music junkie and one day listening to our local classical station I heard a selection that I thought was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. What a shock when I learned that it was McFerrin and Yo-Yo Ma doing Vivaldi's Andante!

Honestly, I could do without the non-classical pieces on this CD...although I enjoy them.

But the classical interpretations are some of the most heavenly, wonderful, beautiful, awe-inspiring things that I have ever heard, on any CD, in any genre! Yes, that good!

McFerrin uses his voice as the perfect instrument and accompanient to Ma's cello. They were made for each other.

Listen to the samples of the classical pieces if you're a doubter...

Excellent CD!.......2005-09-22

While I admit to being a newbie in my connoisseurship of the classical music genre, not only do I think that this disc is a good collection of some of the best classical music ever written, it is actually FUN sometimes, with silly bits thrown in by Bobby and Yo-Yo Ma every now and then! These guys make great music and have a great time making it.

Bobby uses his voice as a fantastic sounding 'instrument' to sing notes much like an instrument playing a duet with Yo-Yo; sometimes his voice sounds so much like a real instrument that you even forget that you are hearing vocals--I don't even know what other vocalist could pull this off. It is a fascinating experiment. I recommend it highly!

After listening to the same 4 songs from their myspace page, I was damn eager to get this in the post. Running to the cd player, the cd inhand, I listened from start to finish with a grin. It didn't disappoint.

It moved its way into the car stereo, and the first song is now my favourite by a mile. Watching the sunset over the water on the way home has never stired me up so much than when listening to this CD. It has grown old a little quick, but for "THE" feeling it gives upon first listens, its an automatic 5 star from me.

I love the hush sound. Wine Red is my favorite song on this whole cd. But there are plently of other great ones on here. Like Sweet Tangerine. That's an awesome song. If you're a fan of One Tree Hill and like the music on there such as 8mm, and Shiny Toy Guns. Then you'll love the Hush sound.

Music, lyrics and the subject fused together perfectly! .......2007-05-08

I usually hesitate to read the lyrics because a lot of times the lyric is either not well written or not what I expected (causes most of the time I can't totally hear what they were talking about exactly when they sing, you know~) and ruins the song I used to like, but this album, it just goes the other way round. Reading the lyrics makes me like it even more.

I haven't really read all the lyrics yet, but I just can't help it to comment on the last song "You Are the Moon". It's so beautiful. The music and the lyrics fuse together perfectly to reflect what it's describing. The calmness of the piano sounds just like that of the night and the melody as beautiful as the glow of the moon...and Greta's charming voice singing softly. It just brings up the vision. So nice, so well done! Can't stop listening to it again and again.

Rest of the album is good too. You won't really have to skip any song. The whole album is pretty good when I listened to it initially. The "Lighthouse" was especially catchy among them. At first it was because of her voice and the piano, and its kinda up and down but calm melody. But then when I read the lyrics, it's even better than I thought! The story is a haunting one and the lyrics has a slight effect for that as well -- the witty trap at the end is a nice twist.

I'm sure you can read details in a lot other reviews or just totally get the CD and listen to it yourself, so I'll save it for now~

Outstandingly Refreshing.......2007-04-18

Unlike much of the music out there, the fresh sound of The Hush Sound is so incredibly winning to the ears. "The Lion's Roar" never fails to bring a smile to my face, the sound, the lyrics, song, the band, and the album have it all. A diverse sound that captures the ear.

Amazing and Unbelievable.......2007-04-10

I just bought this CD today as a kind of last minute thing because the Best Buy I went to didn't have the CD I was looking for. I remembered that I wanted to check this band out, as I have heard and read many great reviews about them and I like Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco, who are similar bands. Honesty, I wasn't expecting too much out of this CD, just another group of wannabe rock stars, but I was wrong and pleasantly surprised and how good this CD actually is. I am very picky with my music and a harsh critic. I rarely give a CD 5 stars, but this band is deserving of them. It is not everday that I hear a CD where I like every single song I hear on it, but that's how it is with the Hush Sound.

The album starts out with the song "We Intertwined", which is vocalized by Bob Morris. This is definitely a good opener song and it features the line "like vines we intertwined", which is where the CD title comes from. Then comes track two, "A Dark Congregation", which totally blew me away. The sheer beauty and clarity of Greta Salpeter's voice is amazing and that alone could make you fall in love with the song and any other song with her voice. Then comes "Sweet Tangerine" featuring Bob Morris' voice and it is definitely a strong song for the album. Then we have "Lions Roar", which is a pretty short song and it doesn't really have a chorus, but that's what makes it great. It is fun and has good lyrics and music and makes you want to keep listening. Then comes "Lighthouse", Greta's next song. It is truly amazing and you can definitely hear the emotion in the lyrics and you get a total mental picture of what is going on. Then comes "Don't Wake Me Up", a fun and catchy song that features vocals from Greta and Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy. Then we have "Where We Went Wrong", a Bob song, that uses nautical metaphors to describe a relationship gone awry. Next is "Magnolia", a Greta song that is very good has great lyrics, and is very catchy. After that we have the famous "Wine Red", which is the first song I ever heard from this band. I liked it when I first heard it and I still do. There are dual vocals between Bob and Greta and it definitely a perfect sound. Then comes "Out Through the Curtain", the last song that Bob sings on the album. It is definitely a good closing for him, which just brings us to the last song on the album, sung by Greta, which is "You Are the Moon". A very nice song if I do say so myself and you will definitely fall in love with it.

If you are even considering this band, I say go for it 100%, and and I promise you that, given you like alternative music, you will not be disappointed.

Excellent for any Decemberists fan (or anyone else!).......2007-01-10

It seems characteristic of the Decemberists that they would release a CD with six songs and call it Five Songs. Perhaps this is what the apology song is for. Excellent CD overall. All pretty solid songs with a few really great ones to make this a five star album.

The CD opens with a lazily playful tribute to the narrator's love in one of the Decemberists' ubiquitous seaside settings. Somewhat bouncy syncopation adds to the relaxed undertone. Shiny is a bit faster, but is probably my least favorite song on the CD-- it sounds a bit hurried and musically incomplete. My Mother was a Chinese Trapeze Artist is an interesting story about someone whose birth and family seems a bit confused, ranging from the sister's husband wanting to start "a punk rock band in South Carolina" to the narrator being betted away "to a blind brigadier in a game / of high stakes canasta."

"Angel Won't You Call Me" is pretty upbeat, remeniscent of something perhaps classic rock-esque. "I Don't Mind" again deals with one of the Decemberists' poetically confusing stories, a rather relaxed and possibly soporific song... "Apology song" is a solid and cheerful song with the Decemberists' excellent combination of harmony, guitar, and organ about a guy who loses his friend's bike (bike?)...

I view the Decemberists as something like fine wine - an acquired taste, but they get better with time. In 5 SONGS, which actually consists of six, Colin Meloy's uniquely wonderful vocals, masterful storytelling and intimidating vocabulary come to a head - and combined with accordionistas, violinists, and your standard guitar/percussion/bass, you'd be hardpressed to find indie folk rock that sounded fresher or more exciting than this.

The songs themselves are six different stories in the ever-eclectic yarn of the Decemberists, with subjects ranging from World War II love stories ("My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist") to a heartfelt apology for losing a friend's bicycle ("Apology Song"). The wavering accordion-playing and acoustic guitar-strumming skates on impressive rhyme schemes stitched together with words like "provincial" and "ubiquitous," which make 5 SONGS, and indeed each successive Decemberists album, seem like a nineteenth century British novel. But who says there's anything wrong with that?

Whether you're a fan of altrock, folk rock, or indie in general, and if you're ready for something new and inimitably unique, I suggest you start here - and keep going.

Top Class!.......2006-03-21

This is a fun EP and a great introduction to The Decemberists if you are unfamiliar with their music. All songs are strong here with the possible exception of the rather whimsical 'Apology Song'. The rest are really excellent, particularly 'Angel Won't You Call Me' and 'My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist'. This is an impressive group whose music is oddly satisfying - 5 Songs is a top class EP which leaves me wanting more.

Is this a B sides cd??.......2005-09-07

If it is, then it is still better than anything else out there.
The songs are all catchy, quirky and charming. I heard some comments about apology song. The comment mentioned, it is some song about some kids bike that got stolen while a friend was watching it for the summer. I think if you listen closely the end reveals that not only was the bike stolen, but so was his girlfriend. I liked the final reveal, but the song that stole my heart and rendered me listless into my mudhole of mediocrity was 'My mother the trapese artist.' This is possibly the decemberists finest song. 'my sister was found by a communist who had deserted his rank and followed his dream, to start up a punk rock band in South Carolina' the writing is that good through the entire song. These guys are just too good. They make me realize just how average I really am.

Five pleasant pop tunes... or six?.......2005-01-15

Don't ask me why the Decemberists' "5 Songs" actually has six songs on it, because I really do not know. Their indiepop-folk tunes are pleasant as always on this E. It serves as a good companion to their first two albums, but their style is a bit too twee and quiet.

It opens with the airy "Oceanside," another song that hints at the rambling old towns and seashores that Decemberist songs are full of. That feeling sticks on through the EP, with the fast strums of "Shiny," the whimsical air of "My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist," and the downbeat ballad "I Don't Mind." The only one that lacks the whimsy is the boring "Apology Song," where frontman Colin Meloy apologizes to a childhood pal for the loss of a bike.

Every song on here is essentially folky and balladic, with Meloy's sea-shanty singing over mostly acoustic instrumentation. Admittedly it gets a bit monotonous musically, but the Decemberists had clearly grown in their literate songwriting by this point.

Meloy's is not quite the voice of an angel; it's a bit too nasal and flat for that. But it is admittedly charming when he sings about the sea and boyhood bike thefts. Musically, the songs are pleasant to the ear. But they are similar in style, which gets a bit monotonous, with the acoustic guitar is backed by steel guitarist Chris Funk and some mellow drums, as well as a slew of muted oddball instruments.

The songwriting is pretty uneven here -- while the writing of "Apology Song" is simplistic and a bit dull, "My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist" is absurdly whimsical and charming, the tale of a kid born to "a Chinese trapeze artist/In pre-war Paris/Smuggling bombs for the underground," who is born in a brothel and gambled away to (what else?) a brigadier on a ship.

The "5 Songs" EP is a charming bit of folk-pop, but it lacks substance in some songs. A pretty listen -- just skip the "Apology Song."

The Hush Sound has put out two great albums. They are a very talented group and I highly recommend them. I have both of their cds and they are *so* good. The songs are catchy and well written. You won't be disappointed!

The Hush Sound--So Sudden.......2007-01-26

I loved The Hush Sound the moment I found them online. Their song, "Wine Red" from the second album hooked me immediatly. I bought both the first and the second CD at the same time. "So Sudden" is very good considering they are not a well known band. Some songs don't have as good recording quality as others but each song is unique and different from the rest of the songs on the album. What I like best in the fact that in each song they switch from male lead vocals to female vocals. It gives it variation so that each song doesn't sound the same. I'd recommended this CD as well as their second "Like Vines."

One of my favorites..........2006-06-12

The Hush sound are appealing because they are truly unique. When pressed, I cannot think of a single band to really compare their sound to. The one comparison I can make is to early U2. The music of the two bands is not alike, but the combination of vibrant youthful energy and rapidly emerging talent are apparent in both "So Sudden" and U2's debut, "Boy". I also see the same glimmer of future greatness. The same anticipation, the feeling that these four on on the brink of something bigger than they can imagine. In the coming years, as they learn to focus this energy, I know that worldwide success will follow.

"So Sudden" is best described as a wholly enjoyable album. While the themes of the songs can be sad or sullen, the music itself is catchy and delightful. Even the most bashful will catch themselves singing along with the lyrics, humming the tunes long after the stereo has been shut off.

While I have affection for all the tracks, I am very paritial to Greta's songs. Her voice, lyrics, and piano work take us on a journey through her soul. "Elieen" is particularly interesting because of the contrast between the mourning lyrics and the soaring music.

I also love "The Market". It is sweet and strange and the most original and unique song I've heard in a long time. It makes me smile without fail.

I cannot begin to describe how much I love The Hush Sound. This CD establishes THS as an extremely talented group, and I must say that their new CD, Like Vines, is even better (I preordered it straight from FBR's online store so it shipped early). But this album is amazing nonetheless. Every track is beautiful, both musically and lyrically (the only track of which I'm not too fond is "Unsafe Safe"). Not only that, but BOTH vocalists (Bob and Greta) have clear, pristine voices that convey the emotions for which their songs call. And what's more is that the sound of their voices together (like on "The Artist") has to be heard to be believed. These guys are simply the best and are probably THE group to watch. Their indie-rock sound may not be for everyone, but if you can appreciate good (alternative) music, then you are in for a real treat. Get this album and decide whether or not you like them; if you do, get your hands on Like Vines ASAP. =)

Simply put...I am blown away!!!.......2006-05-11

I had the wonderful experience of seeing this band live for the first time ever at the Bamboozled Tour this past weekend. I had never heard of them before, and they were by far the best band I'd seen in a long, long time. I immediately purchased their debut album "So Sudden" and I am now an instant fan.

Believe all the hype you read about them, everything is true. I will be shocked if they do not become a huge success. They are FANTASTIC!!! An all-original sound, great catchy tunes, diverse vocals...this band has it all. Every song on the album is AWESOME!! And they are great with their fans. They held a meet & greet after the show and signed hundreds of autographs, talked with everyone & you can tell that they all are genuinely great people.

I wish them all the success in the world, they deserve it. And I cannot wait until June 6th for their second album release!!!

Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

Rich, beautiful, visceral, Tool........2006-04-10

Most people who encounter the String Tribute to Tool (also referred to as Third Eye Open) will be crossover fans from Tool's original work, as opposed to fans of experimental string quartet music seeking out Tool for the first time (although this is theoretically possible). And as this CD is essentally a tribute to Tool, this makes sense, and it is not incorrect to want to judge this album in light of Tool's original recordings, which have a vastly different texture of sound. Thus, those seeking complete sonic replicants of the originals are bound to be disappointed, but so shall those who are looking for exploratory arrangements that obliterate much or all of the initial structure of Tool's songs in favor of even more abstraction. Rather, this album lays somewhere in between.

With the powerful opener "Sober", it's hard to see how anyone could discredit this CD. Each instrument really lays into the arrangement like a hot knife into butter. As the cello and bass come in on the song's ubiquitous bass root with a viola adding eerie structure behind, an articulate violin comes in to match Adam Jones' original guitar part with its own frenetic melody. The song continues to be a faithful, creative, and sonically rich interpretation of the original "Sober" for each second after and ends with a sense of true accomplishment, both for the listener and (surely) for the performers.

What fascinates me the most about this CD, though, is how difficult it must be to arrange small string sections to Tool's complex music and that in spite of that each of these arrangements seems to fit almost perfectly. Some songs certainly shine greater than others: the aforementioned "Sober" is one of the best, blooming with energy and sensation. "?nema" is another, featuring slight altercations and juxtapositions in the rhythm and groove as the song continues, as well as a headlong commitment to the grandiosity of the original in spite of the immense difficulty. And besides adding some new solos and phrasings throughout the songs, the performers also took time to include their interpretations of some of the original non-instrumental intros to Tool's music, as on "Intolerance" and "?nema".

While the CD waxes intense for many of the tracks in another display of faith to the original recordings, the mood here is actually somewhat diverse. My personal favorite, "Pushit", is a beautifully melancholic performance that perfectly captures the mood and intent of the original song. "Ticks and Leeches" broods quietly, spending much of its time in the interlude section of the original. Even "Hush", which one might guess would be rendered much less meaningful without lyrics, seems to have retained all of the cynical humor of the 1992 recording.

The flip side of this is that non-Tool fans are sometimes attracted to the band through this CD. While this is certainly not the rule, hearing the Tool's music in such an unusual format often allows people to judge them more objectively. Only a few years after its release, I already know a handful of people who say that they would never have listened to Tool were it not for this CD or its companion (Metamorphic, or Volume 2).

For some, this CD will take just as much of an open mind to understand as Tool's music alone does for so many others. But it is completely worth the adjustment: each interpretation is a rich, poetic blend that can stand amazingly (read: surprisingly) close to the original in musical strength.

im an avid tool fan, and a fan of maynards various projects like apc and puscifer, so i know that his music is hard to live up to. this just didnt cut the mustard. the songs ar alright on their own but you can barely tell that its tool, i was expecting more along the lines of apocalyptica's tributes to metallica. they remain heavy but still keep the string sound. i recommend that over this any day.

all in all if you're a classical fan, this might help you get into tool, but not vice versa.

if you really like tool check this out. if you enjoy classical music, this is also worthwhile to look into. this tribute makes one realize the beauty of tool's music and it's amazing composition. listening to this and then listening to tool's actual material makes you realize they are not just a metal band but are rather their own style of music (though you shouldn't really need this to realize that). the players all come off as competent musicians, however it sounds as if whoever was behind the mixing board picked up a "recording music for dummies" book the night before this was recorded. it really does impact the overall sound of the cd, and one cannot help but wonder what such a project would sound like with a competent producer. however the sheer idea/execution of the project and the presentation of the musicians still makes it a great listen.

This just flat out doesn't work........2005-08-29

You can really tell that the people playing these songs have never really listened to what they are trying to cover. That or the just don't care. They just took every note that TOOL plays and played it exactly. How is that a tribute? It's just a regurgitation on instruments that the song was never written to be played on. If they wanted to do it right, it would have been a lot of work. They would have had to go through each song and essentially rewrite it to work in the new format. I suspect, however, that this was just four guys looking to make some cash quick and easy, which it looks like they're doing.

What's really funny is that they picked just about the worst band to do this with. I would say that most of TOOL comes from the interaction between Maynard and Danny. This version strips out all of that and all your left with is a garbled mess. I love classical (baroque mainly), but this is really just terrible. It's not classical, it's not TOOL, it's not anything worth listening to.

very nice........2005-02-27

Its just a nice album. There are imperfections that sometimes make me want to figure out how to write music myself so i can correct it, but oh well. This and many of the other "Strings Tributes To..." albums are just perfect background music at work or when I'm cleaning the house, whenever I want a softer, subtler version of some favorites.

I also suggest the Strings Tribute To Led Zeppelin, Metalica (even though i'm not a big fan of them), Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Tori Amos, Pearl Jam, Marilyn Manson, and Nirvana. I don't have the Strings...A Perfect Circle yet, but I am positive that I will like.

They're all just as good, and fit a very specific mood that I find hard to describe.

Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10

I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.

Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11

I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

Gorgeous.......2007-03-07

I saw Laura opening for Josh Ritter in SF last week. I was listening only fairly casually, but rather liked her performance--at least enough to buy her album from the merchandise table.

As it turns out, Laura's album is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorites of the last few years. The songs are crafted in such a way that their scenes are only sketched in collectively by the fairly minimal lyrics, melody, and instrumentation. Laura's vocal style is compelling: phrasing varies all over the place, and she mixes sustained and clipped rhythms in a way that keeps things interesting (Cat Power came to mind for some reason).

Nightwatch in particular is amazing. I also love Hands in Pockets, Small Town Parade, and Country, Country.
