5 out of 5 stars Too Much Purple / Pink Dancer!!.......2007-02-21

This album has alot of good beat for Baby Got Back, Finally, Deeper And Deeper, Im Too Sexy, Jump Around, Real Love and the rest. I have this album when I first saw this album at the mall in 1993. I never stop loving this album! Its been 14 years and I never get tired of listening this album!!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, but..........2000-11-10

This cd is pretty good. I love Sir-Mix-Alot's "Baby Got Back" cuz it's a great song to dance to. I'm glad they didn't remixed that song or else I would of given this CD 3 stars. Other songs on here, except "Deeper And Deeper" and "Finally", are good too. But the reason why I give this CD only 4 stars is because they should of left "Jump Around" by House Of Pain alone. I mean they sould of put the original version of "Jump Around" instead of that remix version on this CD. If you love the original version of "Jump Around" and hate the remix version, then just skip that track. But if you do, than don't. But anyway, go by this CD. Especially for "Baby Got Back". Peace.

5 out of 5 stars spiel after spiel.......2006-01-23

somewhere along the line, "Futurism Restated" became my favorite Minutemen song. and it is contained here on this incredible collection. The Politics Of Time full-length (tracks 16-42) contain some of their best material that was ever put to tape; but the first 15 songs on this cd are almost equal in terms of their powerful no-nonsense approach to music making. the final four tracks are cover songs played live. the recording quality on these final four songs is quite poor (probably recorded on a boom box), but for a fan, it's enjoyable enough.

5 out of 5 stars The Minutemen were the secret 3-Way Dylan of the 80's.......2003-02-07

This is not at all "for fans only" but is a very generous package.
This was the first Minutemen album (though it isn't an album actually) I ever owned, and as a package it is cherished by me up there with their masterwork, Double Nickels On The Dime. Each time these guys were recorded it was as if they were caught styling around a different "phase" or Period of their sound each time they recorded. The Punch Line, What Makes A Man, Double Nickels were all recorded in one or two day chunk- marathon sessions. The biggest chunk of the material here comes from The Politics of Time, which is itself a collection of material that was not included on Double Nickels. The song cycle of studio material from "Base King" to "Maternal Rite" is a unique moment, some of their most rocking, "interesting" stuff in terms of where they were with their sound with these songs, -- I would place it as a further progression of Buzz Or Howl's "heavy" sharp sound and the quirkiness of What Makes a Man, that is, as opposed the definite change in Double Nickels toward a jammier, laid back, San Pedro driving sound that went on to become the Mersh/3 Way "commercial"/folky sound.... So this is the confidence of Double Nickels but eccentricity of earlier records. At times it sounds to me like a twangy Fugazi....
The 2nd half of Politics is not studio, but live stuff, some of which is really great, like "Tony Gets Wasted", as well as a pack of songs that seem almost made on the spot, and it is true that the Minutemen spun songs out like confetti out of a pinata.... The 3 live songs after "Badges" are really sloppy and great to listen to drunk, especially with the funny live audience sounds of a very drunk woman saying something about a chicken and D. Boon's "We don't need no badges" refrain.
But what else does this CD include? You couldn't possibly complain. First you have the classic 1st 7 inch, a real "brick" like the man said, -- their first raw and punky single compact with songs of American paranoia. Here you have the Minutemen already showing their historical side with the marching "Fascist", is like watching a screaming reel of historical footage pass by very rapidly (the only downside of the 7"'s inclusion here is that you really have to listen to a song like "Sickles & Hammers" and "Fascist" on vinyl, the incredble instrumental before it that Sebadoh great as they were couldn't cover as well, a weird punk song about dictionaries? and two great Reagan era punk songs . . . you can say what you want about rock n roll especially punk lacking artistry and finesse, scope, etc. but this is the genuine article here, -- when you first hear the band discussing how to sing over "Joe Mc Carthy's Ghost" as its slamming drums commence you can say to yourself "My, they are really something Else." You know you are in the presence of unusual talent.
There is also the fantastic Joy EP, -- three great Wire-like rolls that has D.'s guitar playing really mean for the first time. And then the great Bean-Spill EP, including the rolling and Watt-sung song that asks what "If Reagan Played Disco", and the great "Afternoons", all which go together very well and tightly in a compact EP.... And at the end you have a choice treat of the Tour-Spiel LP, which is four covers of great songs, which as Trouser Press commented all still sound really like the Minutemen, even CCR's Green River.

Ah, ahm, the Minutemen, the Minutemen. They are beloved to me, immortal in my heart. I first heard them when I was 14 and I never grew out of them, even though I grew away from most of that musique. Ah, but the Minutemen! You must have them!

5 out of 5 stars Ton of Stuff, including the Classic "Paranoid Time" EP.......2000-10-26

"Paranoid Time", the first 7 tracks on here, is absolutely heavy as a brick and prefigures everything the band went on to do - they never did it better than this.

The rest of the material is mixed but contains many brilliant nuggets - such as "The Process" and "Party With Me Punker". Recording quality varies from pristine to terrible, but that's the aesthetic at work here.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, but for true fans only.......2000-07-11

"Post Mersh Volume 3" collects the Minutemen's earliest material -- three EPs ("Paranoid Time," Bean Spill," and "Tour Spiel"), "The Politics of Time" LP and the "Joy 7" -- together on one CD. However, most of this stuff is for true fans only. A lot of it is recorded poorly, and there are some very "young" compositions. Still, the songs have great energy and "The Politics of Time" material is as good as anything else pre-"Double Nickels on the Dime." The fact that all this music (almost 70 minutes) is available for one low price bumps it up to a four star review in my opinion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best compilation i own.......2003-05-13

This cd is the best compilation i own. It has a devils brigade song called vampire girl. devils brigade is a psychobilly band which is everyone in rancid except for lars. it also has good tracks from tiger army, lars and the bastards, nekromantix, rancid, distillers, agnostic front, dropkick murphys and some other this compilation is awesome but at the end theres some ska i dont enjoy too much. this cd also contains 2 videos you can watch on your computer. one is dropkick murphys - spicy mchaggis jig and the other is tiger army - cupids victim. this is a very good compilation its well worth 5-6 bucks.i hope they come out with give em the boot 4.

5 out of 5 stars good mix.......2002-12-12

give em the boot 2 had a lot of reggae & ska on it & this one is more punk rock, which is good. the bands on it were really good and i pretty much liked every song (the joe strummer one was kind of weird...not like the clash at all). i would recommend it especially since it's so cheap.

4 out of 5 stars Another in a great series.......2002-09-15

Hellcat Records has turned out another great compilation. I must say that it sounds a little harder, the music a little less melodic and more hardcore. That's just fine by me. The music videos are a nice touch. "The Spicy McHaggis Jig" video is one of the funniest videos I've seen in a long time.

Good work, Tim!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Give em the boot 2...........2002-05-23

I was excited when I saw that their was a new Give em the boot compilation out, as Give em the boot 2, is one of my favorite cd's ever. Although when I played this cd I was sad to hear that the reggae and ska sounds that where on Give em the boot 2 have been substituted for a straight ahead punk compilation. Not to mention that the quality of songs on this album, are nowhere as good as the tracks selected for the two previous Give em the boot cd's. If you are going to get a Give em the Boot cd, buy the second installment, it is much better...

2 out of 5 stars In a word: Disappointing........2002-04-02

Give 'Em The Boots I and II are punk-rock neccessities. Sprinkled with ska, reggae and rocksteady, they were truly palatable for those of us with eclectic tastes. Sadly, Give 'Em The Boot III purifies itself of most of the reggae and ska from it's two previous outings, leaving us with a punk rock wasteland. The songs here just simply aren't up to Hellcat's high standars. There are a few good moments (The Slackers' BRILLIANT "Information Error", the Tiger Army video) but that is outweighed by a parade of messy and talentless punk rock. Even the Rancid track is anemic.

Although, for [the money], "Give 'Em The Boot III" isn't much of a gamble. Still, it's been three years since Vol. II, and III frankly falls flat on it's body-pierced face.

With its anonymous packaging, unlabeled CD, and lack of track titles, Analogue Bubblebath, Vol. 3 could have been the inspiration for the derogatory phrase "faceless techno bollocks." The CD comprises perhaps a week's output from the homemade studio of Richard D. James, the man who claimed to write tracks in five minutes while asleep, the engineer who'd been repeatedly electrocuted by his own equipment, the prankster who played discs of sandpaper instead of records, and the pop star who invested his newfound wealth in a tank. But Frank Zappa he was not. This bubble bath is an extremely demanding listen; gone are the simple almost-hooks that made Selected Ambient Works Vol. II and Surfing on Sine Waves accessible. Instead the listener is immersed in hypnotic drum loops tied together with the barest fragments of melody. Here, the aesthetic of minimalist Philip Glass and ambient pioneer Brian Eno is applied to the sonic sensibilities of Cabaret Voltaire or Test Dept., resulting in a dark and curious hour of immersement. --Matthew Corwine

Album Description

Restocked. Packaged in a clear slimline jewel case, this is a much desired reissue of a near impossible to track down Aphex artifact from '93. AFX is Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin aka Caustic Window. Analogue Bubblebath 3 is a repress of a 'lost' album originally released in 1993. This 13 track CD is a great value for money featuring a broad spectrum of AFX magic. For any self respecting fan of Mister James this album is a must...[he] lives in a bank, drives a tank and is considering buying a submarine. The man is a genius and the re-release of Analogue Bubblebath 3 gives newcomers to his world the opportunity to sample some early sonic delights. Rephlex. 2005.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great bath, but the fourth one was better........2006-06-24

First of all, I'm not sure where the titles for these tracks came from. My copy of the album didn't have a track list. Maybe they came from a previous issue of this record...

Anyway, this is a great work of raw techno. My personal favorites were track 1, 4 through 8, 10,(an intense short track,) and 13. I love the first song! It makes me want to take on the world,(in a good way, if that makes sense). The second track is a long, repetitive string of alien notes with an awesome bass track to follow. 3 isn't too interesting. The fourth is an awesome piece fit for any mind numbing rave. Track 5 is really good, but it seems to come out quieter than the other songs, so I just turn it louder. 6 seems to have an oriental flare of some sort, pretty neat actually. (I'd bet anything that the sample at the beginning is a vacuum cleaner). Track 7 presents a really good loop of synth percussion. The eighth song is really pretty, I like it a lot, it's very comforting. Like 3, 9 isn't too interesting either, but grows more entertaining towards the end. Track 10 is half-a-minute of something really intense. Track 11 sounds like it should have been on Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2, and 12 is a minute of what sounds like rain and a man hyperventilating. The last song is quite sinister, like an angry synthesizer gaining revenge on humanity. All the way through I can't help but think that AFX put more effort into producing Analogue Bubblebath 4. Sure there are only five tracks,(the last being a snippet of an interview with Evel Knievel,) but they just seem much more thoughtful. I haven't gotten to buying the first bubblebath yet so I can't say anything about that one. Both 3 and 4 are great buys, especially 4. Thanks for reading.

4 out of 5 stars raw techno.......2005-09-28

This is straight on, harch electronic music. It has a simple appearance but make no mistake because AFX is very different from other techno/electronic musicians. He seems to be able make something intresting of just a high speed drum, bass and som sound clip on top of it. This is not his most advanced or most amazing record, for that I would vote for "druqs". BUT this has this raw power that will blow your walls away (plus the most minimalistik cd-album cover ever seen)...

3 out of 5 stars typical afx.......2000-01-22

this album, while good, sounds like rdj(afx) when he is asleep!the disc looks innocent enough and the tracks titles, which are really bizarre, you can get off the net.he basically takes a good beat , loops it over and again with some other sounds and makes it a track.granted, some are really good, but some can also come off as slightly annoying.trust me, there have been better albums...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not the best Punk-O-Rama!.......2005-11-06

It has its high points, but some real stinkers contaminate it.

1. We Threw Gasoline... (A-) Not too appealing at first, but the chorus is incredible and irresistable

2. Everybodies Girl (A++) Pure bliss from start to finish! Unbelievable.

3. Worlds On Heroin (A-) A lazy opening riff? Nah, it picks itself up quickly, impressivley.

4. Say Anything (A+) It only gets one plus because it's too short!

5. Delinquent Song (A-) Some ska is here. Slower than its predecessors, but it's excellent with the right mindset.

6. Everready (A-) Good.

7. Greed Motivates (A) Grabs you and goes really fast!

8. Telepath Boy (A-) Fun for all 50 seconds it lasts.

9. Never Connected (A-) Nice.

10. Gotta Go (Grade not available) I always skip this, so I wouldn't know.

11. Defiled (A-) Rockin'!

12. Haula$$ Hyena (B+) Kinda annoying and familiar.

13. Rats In The Hallway (A-) There were better songs on Rancid's debut (Hyena, Detroit, Rejected.)

14. Steel-Toed Sneakers (A) Great!

15. Bad Seed (D+) They sure got the "bad" part right.

16. Rotten Egg (A) Annoying to some, but I love it.

17. Poison Steak (A) Annoying to some, but I love it.

18. No Equalizer (Grade not available) Once again, I always skip it.

19. Alright (A-) Since this is a demo song, it's kinda trite and sterile, but OK.

20. A.D.D. (B-) Why do I have to force myself to listen to it if I'm not too crazy about it?

21. Lozin' Must (F) Millencolin, Millencolin, Millencolin, you're capable of much more than this puke.

22. You (A++) Quite a contrast from Lozin' Must, indeed.

23. Ordinary Fight (A+) Would've been an excellent ending song, but no...

24. If (C) ...this mediocrity had to be dropped.

25. Wake Up (C-) An unreleased Pennywise song. Unfortunately, listening to it makes it clear why it was left off the superior Full Circle.

I personally think Punk-O-Rama 5 is the CD to get first. On Punk-O-Rama 3, few of the tracks hit that "Aw yeah, this is amazing" vibe or are very memorable. On Punk-O-Rama 5, the tracks by Zeke, Millencolin, All, Bouncing Souls, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Union 13, Osker and Pennywise all surpass those on Punk-O-Rama 3.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best Punk-o-Rama.......2005-07-15

This introduced me to the world of Epitaph punk. Good thing it was like 8 years ago instead of now because Epitaph sucks now.
If you're looking for some good (relatively old, god now with crap like My Chemical Romance, this punk seems like millenia ago...) punk, you better pick this up. All the songs are catchy and they'll make you want to go pick up old Bouncing Souls, old Bad Religion and old Millencolin. Good things in life.

5 out of 5 stars this rocks.......2005-04-27

voodoo glowskulls are great here, and the best song is definatly rats in the hallway by rancid. other stuff is good too.

3 out of 5 stars One of the better Punkoramas.......2003-06-17

The punkorama CDs are all worth your money simply because they cost under 5 dollars, if memory serves. (Except for #1, which is full price for some ungodly reason, and #2 which is only a few dollars more, and is worth the money as I think it is the best of all.)
That said, this is one of the better Punkorama comps. NoFX shines in the first track with one of my alltime favorite song-titles (which, I have to say, is not done justice by the song at all): We Put Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps For Arms and No Eyebrows. World's on Heroin is a good track. As are Alright, Lozin' Must, and even Everybody's Girl (and I am NOT a Dwarves fan.) As always happens to compilation CD's, this has fallen to the depths of my CD shelves somewhere, but not before introducing me to a few bands I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, which I think is the real reason record companies release these CD's [at the price]: they hope you'll go out and buy full-priced CD's by the same bands and they'll make the money back in spades. (Either that or they don't bother paying royalties to the bands, which I can't back up with any evidence, but is probably also the case.)

5 out of 5 stars Very cheap, one of the best Punk-O-Ramas.......2003-03-04

Punk-o-Rama 3 is a brilliant album. It's a single cd compilation. It has some of the best names in punk on this album, like Pennywise and Rancid. It has 27 songs on it, so you are bound to like a few songs on it, but this isnýt a problem actually as 99% of the songs are good, but it does have some really bad ones too. The album is like a taster for all the bands contained on the cd as it is only $4 .99, which I donýt think, is bad at all. This album is a good way to see which bands you will like.
This also contains one song that you can't buy anywhere else, for example NOFX's "We threw Gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows" which is a really good song .

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars worth the money by far.......2006-06-12

7 bucks for this cd is one heck of a deal. this cd is amazing and continues in the atticus line of awesome compilations, though in a different, less punk way. with quirky bands such as bedoiun soundclash and the sounds and piebald this cd gains a new element. i cant really put it into words, but this cd is refreshingly new. some of my favorite include the songs by the sounds, bedouin soundclash, lucero, taking back sunday, rise against, MxPx, murder by death(this song represents a lot for me), lydia, gratitude, and pretty much everything on here. even if you buy this and find that you like only half of the songs (by the way every song here is uniquely different, something you dont find as much on the first two) it is still well worth the money. gotta love these compilations keep them coming

3 out of 5 stars Average Compilation.......2006-03-26

People need to take this for what it is and not get so bent out of shape over genres and labels. I'll admit that I don't like all the songs on the CD, actually I can probably dislike half of them, but considering there is over 20 tracks and it cost me around $7 that isn't bad at all. It is definitely worth it, because the tracks I did like introduced me to bands I have never heard before. Which is precisely the point of compilation CDs. Personally, I liked the second Atticus compilation much better, but if you liked that one then you'll still probably enjoy this. It took me two or three listens until I warmed up to any of the tracks, so don't be quick to judge it.

If you are just angsty because you thought you were going to get something you didn't, get over it and give the CD away to friend or relative. If you are really worried about getting your investment of $8 back, sell it to one of those used CD stores. However, I doubt that will be necessary.

5 out of 5 stars If you think this is supposed to be a punk cd...GET A CLUE!!!!.......2005-12-16

Everyone needs to stop bashing people just because they "went to the same school" and whatnot...ACTUALLY HAVE A FRICKEN REVIEW!! THIS IS NOT A FORUM FOR DISCUSSION!!!

Now, with that out of the way, nowhere on the cd or packaging is there a reference to this music being referred to as punk, so YES, all of you who say it isn't punk would be correct, but tastes and genres of music are changing, as well as the types of bands as well...as much as most people would hate to admit it, Emo music is becoming a major part of the musical society...and I agree that most bands of that particular genre have a very similar sound, but the songs aren't the same, that is what sets them apart.

This particular does not have only emo music on it...it has different genres as well, from bands such as Death Cab For Cutie and Mae (refreshing music in my opinion) and Alexisonfire (screamo)...so there is a variety of different music on this cd. This is not meant to be a "Punk" music cd, so enough of the zero star reviews based on the fact that you don't know what you want and you wasted your money on this because you THOUGHT it was punk...maybe you should read into who is on a cd before you buy it. THAT WOULD BE SMART!! Anywho, the reason that this cd deserves 5 stars is because it covers such a wide spectrum of bands, whether they be popular currently or up-and-coming, that it is worth the little amount of money required. Think about it this way, $8 divided by 24 songs = approximately $.33 cents a song...YOU CAN'T GO WRONG!! If you are into this music, I also suggest anything from the Warped Tour Series (also under $10, but with 2 cds included in each of the 2002-2005 compilations) and the Punk-O-Rama series (some are better than others, some with 2 cds, a cd/dvd combo, etc.) which isn't as good, but has better punk ties on it...in either case...this is a great Christmas gift to buy for those who are strapped for cash. My synopsis: IT IS WORTH THE 33 CENTS A SONG!!

1 out of 5 stars Micheal Sullevan knows nothing about punk.......2005-10-12

This joker called blink-182 punk!!!!!!!! Give me a break, This is emo, And not punk. There are a few bands on here i like. But the rest is crap.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay........2005-10-11

I'm not impressed with this CD. I bought it because it was cheap, and I really see why now. Out of 24 songs, I only like 4 of them. I'm really not into "Emo" music, which is what most of this is. Although it has a few good songs, I really wouldn't recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Hell breaks loose once again........2006-10-25

Swishahouse is a label you either love, or hate; there really is no fine line. In my opinion, their crew of rappers produce some of the best mainstream hip-hop found on today's market, with infectious melodies, hypnotic beats, and average-to-above rappers. I admit I maybe biased towards the label simply because they specialize in hip-hop from one of my favorite cities for the art, but it's hard to deny that while the label has no profound, or thought provoking lyricists, they do have competent rappers with smooth flows, over some of the finest production in the game today.

Unfortunately, while Swishahouse maybe presented as a powerhouse label in today's market, they don't really have a lot of marketable artists currently in their camp. Their biggest star is clearly Paul Wall, and he makes very few appearances on this album; their second biggest star is Mike Jones, and while this album was being completed, Jones left the label, and didn't contribute to it. Though he's back now, he's no where to be found on this release; where your stance on Jones lies in whether that's a positive or negative. The best rapper in their camp next to Wall is H-Town legend, Lil' Keke, and he is clearly the star of this compilation. So as we're all waiting on his major label debut later this year, we've got a number of his songs here to whet our appeties.

The album starts off with a collage of excerts from various Swishahouse artists, from Keke to Wall, from Coota Bang to Yung Redd. The first real track is swerving, which features Archie Lee, Coota Bang, and Lil' Keke. Keke's the star on this track, just as he is on all the tracks he's featured on. The beat is a nice, slow melody reminiscent of some of the 'House's past hits, although it's clear this one won't get much radio play outside of Texas. Juelz Santana shows up on the next track, and though I'm not the biggest fan of the guy who labeled himself "What The Game's Been Missing," Juelz holds it down on this cut, and oddly enough, sounds right at home. He's no match for Lil' Keke though, whose presence on the microphone show his veteran status in the game, despite most people recognizing him as a rookie due to his relative obscurity.

"The Hood Luv Me" supports another tight beat, but Yung Redd nor E-Class aren't going to blow up anytime soon. In fact, throughout this album, the beats are always tight; which is odd for a compilation, when most comps possess throwaway tracks. Unfortunately, the Swishahouse camp sans Lil' Keke and Paul Wall, and a few outstanding guests(Scarface, Z-Ro, Juelz) aren't charismatic enough to carry these tracks where the superior Swishahouse emcees would be able to.

This is a great compilation with dope production, and some great cuts from Lil' Keke, but in the end, this is only a presentation album of Keke's skills for those unfamiliar. It's a nice appetizer while we wait for Keke's upcoming release, and if you're a fan of Swishahouse or H-Town rap in general, this is recommended; otherwise, it's take it or leave it.
