Following a tide of critical acclaim and numerous appearances on every other chill-out compilation since records began, Groove Armada's Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub) has an awful lot to live up to. Vertigo, released in February 2000, was a phenomenal success, critically and commercially, spawning hits like "If Everybody Looked the Same" and the sun-drenched "At the River." Having found their niche in downbeat, Groove Armada explore the style even further on Country. The opening track, "Suntoucher," is a slow-burning dub plate, featuring Jeru The Damaja, which breaks out a supercool horn riff midway through. It's a fantastic start to the album, but it does begin to feel a little long as the song unspools. Even the slightly more uptempo numbers, like first single "Superstylin'" and "Fogma," don't rush into anything, building slowly before the bass hook and drums kick in with a lukewarm impact. Goodbye Country is another musical triumph for Groove Armada, with every track as good as the one before. Still, it's a shame they veer so strongly in a downbeat direction, as they mostly leave behind the quirky house style that helped distinguish their earlier work. --David Trueman

4 out of 5 stars Another Successful Album For The Groove.......2007-08-02

I bought this album at its release in 2001. Six years later and I'm still playing the entire album or some of its choice tracks on a regular basis. This is a very good album by Groove Armada. I'm sure it would sound just as fresh today for someone who is not overly familiar with its tracks.

Noteable mentions are "Superstylin'" and "Edge Hill" with the remaining tracks being completely dud-free.

One of the best performers to catch live, prove that they can do the studio thing too with Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub).

4/5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Hellooooo, Groove Armada.......2007-03-30

Long after proving themselves to be maestros of analogue-driven club-roots pyrotechnics with the quaking "I See You Baby" and the lackadasical "At The River," Groove Armada put out "Goodbye Country," proving that their versatility has no limits. This album proves that the definitions of "house" or "groove" or "chill" or "dance" are only as constricted as the artist who aspires to them.

Findlay and Cato partner with a classy conglomeration of collaborators (Celetia Martin, Jeru the Damaja, Richie Havens, et. al.) to form an album of music that is at times excruciatingly sweet ("My Friend"), at times deep and deliberate ("Fogma"), and sometimes just plain air-slappingly ecstatic (you must've heard "Superstylin'" by now).

Whether they're weaving herbal folk rhythms into something sunny and gorgeous ("Little by Little") or pumping out minimalist hip-hop sewn tightly to exquisitely looped musical murals ("Raisin' the Stakes" and "Suntoucher"), they're redefining the meaning of Good Music. Their sound here is lankier and lazier than in album's past, but it is certainly just as wonderful as ever.

4 out of 5 stars Not many highlights, but still a nice album to groove to (har har).......2006-01-01

Groove Armada isn't a great group, but they do manage to deliver some quality tunes every now and then. I don't think "Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)"'s best tunes are as good as "Vertigo"'s, but they're still really good (and it's nice to hear a cameo appearance by Jeru The Damaja in "Suntoucher". Also, "Suntoucher" and "My Friend", especially, sound like they could be hits). However, some of the songs do sound a bit cheesy, and overall the album is pretty uneven. If you're a fan of Groove Armada or if you're looking for some groovy tunes, though, you should be at least satisfied with "Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)" (get "Vertigo" too!). Slightly recommended.

Highlights include:
"Suntoucher"
"Superstylin'"
"Little By Little"
"My Friend"
"Lazy Moon"
"Edge Hill"
"Tuning In (Dub Mix)" (Though this one more as background music)

5 out of 5 stars A pleasently feel good trip........2005-03-10

Same old GA winning formula, the trick they have is exploring the mainstays of dance and ambient chill in the main and adding a thematic twist to each album. It works so well becuase they study their craft and bring something truly original to each album, something copycat artists do not even come close to achieving. Each album is a joyous celebration of a musical style and this "hip hop" trip is no exception. A treat for the ear canal!

5 out of 5 stars ..sorry i am late.......2004-02-27

I don't know why i arrived to this cd only in the 2004!
Never too late, in this case.
Infact for a long periods i considered Groove Armada likes the band of "My Friend" a nice song but...nothing more.
I was so wrong that when i listened all the cd...i was disappointed with me....why i discovered this wonderful cd only now?
Coming to the cd it's a mix of dub-groove-funk-rock-reggae in a dark hip-hop soul influence.
But all this kind of music are mixed in a very originally way.
A strong product without any falling down and up, great song are: SUNTOUCHER , SUPERSTYLIN , of course MY FRIEND and also HEALING.
I am gonna to buy all the GA products.........it's never too late.

5 out of 5 stars Bear Family, you are the best!.......2003-10-20

Everything that reviewer below said about Ernest and this box set are so true, I couldn't agree with him more. ET helped so many struggling artists in country music including Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Cal Smith, Jack Green and the list goes on and on. Ernest Tubb's music and legacy will always live on forever and this box set is definitely a must for all ET fans. You will hear him sing gospel, Christmas, his idal Jimmie Rogers's songs and also some humorous duets with Red Foley. Ernest and Red were such great buddies and the song You're A Real Good Friend is such a joy to listen to. Also, take a listen to ET's tribute to Hank Williams shortly after his death called Hank, It won't Be The Same Without You. It is such an emotional song and everything that he says in that song about Hank is so true. You will not be disappointed with this set.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent look into post-war America through its music........1999-01-11

This five disc set shows that the only one's who know what gifts America truly has are those who are not American. It took the Bear family of Germany to compile the works of Ernest Tubb and other country greats that have long been forgotten by those who think the genre is best when you add a steel guitar to rock and roll.

This box set gives the late-90's America a look at post- World War II America and a to what great country music is all about.

The five discs have a heavy dose of heartache with songs like "Reply to Rainbow at Midnight" and "You Hit The Nail Right on the Head." This, of course, deals with cheating, drinking and some sexist (though not necessarily incorrect) views of women such as "G-I-R-L spells Trouble."

The first disc contains songs Ernest Tubb recorded in 1947 and 1948, at the height of ihs popular career. This year saw Ernest Tubb become the first country singer to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City and found his songs on juke boxes all over the country and world.

The second disc picks up with "Biting My Fingernails" a song that Andrew Sisters recorded with Ernest in 1949 in order to combine the forces of both Decca powerhouses. In true Ernest style it is, above all else, a country song as he refused to perform a pop song.

The other discs include an assortment gospel, Christmas, Jimmy Rodger (his idol)songs, hard-core country and humorous recordings. Perhaps the most memorable (for those who have gotten over the shock the he was the first to record and popularize "Blue Christmas") are the humorous songs done as either a duet with his long-time friend Red Foley or as a trio with Foley and Queen of Country Comedy Minnie Pearle. From tongue-in-cheek "answer" songs to "Goodnight, Eileen" and "Tennessee Border" to the back-stabbing "You're a Real Good Friend."

The music in all is solid work that stands up well to 50 years of time. Some you could see being done with a "rock" tempo and being hits in 1999. In fact, as country has become rock with more drinking than drugs and strong females than groupies, a couple of more electric guitars and the elimination of the cheesy electric organ and they would as the field is starving for ideas.

This set shows why Ernest Tubb was so popular as to influence the world to stop calling the genre "hillbilly" to today's country & western and why it's criminal that more people who listen to country radio do not know him.

Once enough intelligent people heard recordings by this man and he would get the recognition he deserves. In fact, if enough people had access to this style music from Tubb and others preserved by the Bear family there would be a realization how vacuous and self-important most country music has become.
