    .
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.

    DGG's sound is excellent.

This set is a remarkable document of art.

    5 out of 5 stars Sheer Delight!.......1999-05-20

Three great artists in their prime, in ravishing live performances. What a treat! Janowtiz's Handel is less than exciting, and why Arleen Auger sings Zerbinetta's aria TWICE is beyond me, but those quibbles aside, these generously filled discs are a sheer delight

    4 out of 5 stars A memento of a productive partnership........2001-11-19

EMI commemorate in this double CD a remarkable partnership in the C20th world of music. It began in Berlin in 1926. It had been 20 years since Franz Lehar's "Die lustige Witwe" became the light opera that everyone wanted to see. In places like Beunos Aires it had run simultaneously in five theatres in five different languages. Lehar's subsequent productions had met with diminishing success. His latest light opera, "Paganini", which contained some of his best music, had flopped at its Vienna premiere. Nervous and dispirited as its Berlin premiere drew near, Lehar wrote to the tenor Richard Tauber, "You must sing in Berlin, a second flop is inconceivable for me. I'm suddenly afraid of everything to do with the theatre - I'm getting old".

Tauber obliged. The Berlin production was a resounding success, Tauber sometimes being required to repeat "Gern hab' ich die Frau'n gekusst" as many as five times. Lehar admitted, "Richard, during this moment I have been born again as an artist!" And so began a great final flowering of Lehar theatre productions, all featuring the Austrian tenor Richard Tauber.

Fortunately the Lehar-Tauber association resulted in an extensive series of recordings, in many of which Lehar conducts the orchestra. EMI began issuing a collection of them towards the end of the LP era, and now, in 2001, they are collected onto this double CD. I read the claim that a great many of the tracks appear on CD for the first time, but here in Australia most have already been available on CD.

I don't always find Tauber unexcelled in this repertoire, preferring other tenors sometimes and their recordings. Several of the "Paganini" recordings were made before the Berlin season opened. Tauber and his then wife Carlotta Vanconti sound as though they are sight-reading unfamiliar music. I once possessed several of the "Das Land des Lachelns" items on 78s. The 1929 sound seemed robust and full then, but seems sadly emasculated here.

Tauber, I believe, somehow had the secret of touching the hearts and minds of all who listened to his singing - composers, colleagues, chancellors and charwomen. This comprehensive and well-planned issue will ensure that his work with the Hungarian composer Franz Lehar will continue to charm and delight.

4 out of 5 stars Great album except for the Title Track.......2000-05-02

The third man theme orchestration on the first track is simply awful (bad enough to be humorous)! The rest of the CD is delightful with just zither with accordian accompanyment. There might be other instruments, but I'm not sure. Karras used a zither that was especially built for him which produced a very full and rather aggressive sound. He also repeatedly plucked the strings in many songs to produce a sustaining tone. I find that style of playing very interesting. "The Third Man" is one of my favorite movies. The opening credit showing Karras' hands playing the zither is, in my opinion, one of the great graphic achievements of that era. Most of the album is made-up of various themes from Strauss and operetta strung together. Each track may contain 3-5 themes. My favorite theme is #2 on track 21. The good original analog recording is nicely transferred to digital with little noise and appropriate dynamic range. Listening to this recording is like taking a quick trip to one of my favorite cities--Vienna!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Enjoyable.......2005-12-19

Ths recording has its faults, but is still extremely enjoyable. I have have to agree with one of the previous reviewers about the conducting. It does sound quite detached and lacks all spontaneous quality, but the singers still manage very nicely. The recording sound also comes across as being far away, but it really doesn't make a difference because it isn't bad at all. The singers are all very good. Much as it pains me to say, you can tell that as far coloratura goes, this is just about Kenny's limit. She nevertheless has such an exquisite and full voice that she easily makes up for it, especially in the quartet. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars A Recording that is original, authentic, and enjoyable.......2005-07-17

THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO (DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL) was both a critical and popular success in Mozart's lifetime and while it is not revived as often as the three Da Ponte Operas (Marriage, Giovanni, and Cosi) or THE MAGIC FLUTE, it has never been completely out of the repertoire. Its overture is a popular work in symphonic concerts and a few of its arias find their way into the concert arena.

In some respects the opera was revolutionary as is the case in so many Mozart works. The music has what is called a "Turkish" flair which was quite popular in Mozart's day. The Arabic world was seen as mysterious and exotic and anything Arabic was all the rage. Mozart does his best to give the music of the opera what was believed to be an authentic Arabic sound and used a wide variety of instruments to achieve this effect. It was also one of the first masterful scores for the German opera form known as singspiel where the arias are separated by spoken dialogue rather than musical recitative. The music worked for the stage, was loved by the audience, and sets a higher standard for music of the stage.

Many times recordings from "period instruments" can sound strange to the modern ear because we are used to a fuller symphony orchestra than would have been the case in Mozart's day. Nikolaus Harnoncourt is able to use period instruments to make this recording sound as authentically Mozartarian (I'm not sure there is such a word but I'm using it anyway) and pleasing to the modern listener. The soloists do a great job, the spoken dialogue is not jarring as it can be in some recordings, and it is an overall appealing set.

There are a number of good solid recordings of this work available. Two of the standards are the set under the direction of Ferenc Fricsay and another set directed by Sir Geog Solti. Both are highly praised and can provide an enjoyable listening experience, but if you are a Mozart buff, or want to hear a fresh recording of a great yet often neglected work, the Harnoncourt set is just for you.

5 out of 5 stars Singspiel as it should be done.......2000-07-10

Certainly Harnoncourt is a controversial director. But what do we have here? A rather outdated story which in its own time was already particularly implausible. The comic effect would not even qualify for the laughing track of our modern sitcoms. Yet the music is just too good to dismiss it. Harnoncourt found the redemption key. A rather crisp tempo over all, a choice of bright and raw sonorities allows us not to dwell too much on the unlikely story. A few excellent singers, well directed, allow us to appreciate the wonderful pyrotechnics of the Mozart arias. The result? We do not force our laughter anymore and we leave with a wonderful sense of optimism. The all is well that ends well shines thorough the performance. What is even better, we leave this performance finally realizing that technically this was the first of the great Mozart operas, that some of the arias have nothing to envy the subsequent works. Then again Mozart fans knew this secret all along. It is the merit of this performance to show this to the newcomer. And to the critic of Harnoncourt to consider that perhaps he does have a valid point, that Mozart never intended this opera to be a mellifluous work, but a dynamic romp.

5 out of 5 stars Finally ! die Entfurung treated seriously !.......2000-01-11

And it is an eye opener ! For starters, Harnoncourt costum built the turkish instruments that the score calls for, and that creates such a diversity in sound, that it is as though the dust and old varnisch has been lifted of an old stuffy painting to reveal the Rembrand underneath. Very precise, and extremely exciting is the way Harnoncourt chooses his tempi, justified by years of thorough musical research and a rich understanding of performance practice of the 18th century. Excellent soloists, particularly Matti Salminen sticks out. Extreme contrats in the characters also creates an extremely HUMAN story, what Mozart is all about in the end. If you play this stuff as background music, do NOT buy this disc.

3 out of 5 stars Sterile conducting; some interesting singing.......1999-11-27

To my ear, Harnencort's conducting sounds detatched, like he's not enjoying the music much, even though he tries to sound playful with fast tempi and lots of percussion in the overture. The tenors and the women sound overrehearsed, sacrificing fun for precision.

Matti Salminen's Osmin is very interesting, in that it is the most Wagnerian-sounding available Osmin on record. Matti Salminen puts Hagen-like murder into every syllable, even the coloratura sections. It's awesome, but the phrase "bull in a china shop" keeps coming to mind.

In a very brief span of time, tenor Christoph Prégardien has established himself as a commanding interpreter of Schubert songs. This program has a certain bardic quality, with lots of songs about harps, or by people playing harps, including three Harper's Songs from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister. Schubert loved this sort of thing, and has a ball coming up with musical evocations of ages past. A marvelous collection. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Solid Collection of Lesser-known Schubert Lieder.......2004-09-27

The Hyperion Schubert Edition is planned to contain all of the many German songs (lieder) of Franz Schubert. I'm not sure whether they've recorded all of them as of yet, but with over thirty CDs, they've got to be close.

CD #23 focuses on Schubert's Lieder written during 1816. The liner notes point out the fact that many of these songs are overlooked in the repertoire today, but let's be honest-with over 600 Schubert songs, a lot of them are going to be overlooked.

Most of these songs are short, sweet, and strophic. Two exceptions are tracks one (one of Schubert's `Ossian' songs, clocking at a monstrous 16 minutes) and two (a strophic choral setting of Das Grab, "The Grave"). My favorites on the album include Track 7, Abendlied, a Mozart-like piece, and Track 6, Der Jungling an der Quelle.

Pregardien's tenor voice is light and clear, with very good facility. The voice is well-suited for Lieder, as one might expect, and Pregardien stays within the bounds of these simple songs on this CD.

Naturally, this CD is a must-have for Schubert aficionados and music libraries, but I would certainly not recommend this CD as a first Schubert-song CD. Seek a recording of Fisher-Dieskau singing the Erlking, or a woman singing Gretchen am Spinnrade. If you enjoy those CDs and stumble across this one, however, you won't be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......1999-06-06

5 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs.......2005-10-25

I bought this collection from a mail order firm in 1993, and can only call it "an encyclopedic collection of Schubert songs by a singer and pianist with an encyclopedic knowledge of Schubert songs."

I don't listen to these discs track to track, but rather selected tracks and keep this 9 disc set in my collection as an encyclopedia, for reference, rather than to listen to for hours on end.

This collection doesn't contain any of the 3 great Schubert song cycles: "Schwanengesang", "Die Schone Mullerin", or "Winterreise." Most of these songs are less than 5 minutes in length, but some are as long as 20 minutes, with Recitative/Aria/Recit./Aria pattern. Each disc is 70 minutes or more, making for a lot of music. Going dollar for music, it's a good deal!

I am very thankful for this release. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (born 1925) seemed inexhaustable, making many lieder and opera recordings in the late 1960s/early 70s when these recordings were made for DG. His partnership with pianist Gerald Moore lasted many years, and they recorded many of these same lieder for EMI.

I won't attempt to go into detail describing different songs in this large collection, but if you love great singing and Schubert lieder, consider this as an investment in eternity. If you only want a disc of "Greatest hits" of this genre, consider the DG "Originals" release of Fischer-Dieskau with both Gerald Moore and Jorg Demus in different tracks.

You can tell I'm biased in favor of Herr Fischer-Dieskau and his singing, which is always beautiful here. I also love Schubert as sung by Hermann Prey (1929-1998): Philips Eloquence, and Decca (deleted); Janet Baker (Hyperion, with Graham Johnson); and Hans Hotter (EMI, with "Schwanengesang.")

5 out of 5 stars Make up your mind to this journey........2001-02-07

Since this set of Schubert lieder (3 boxes, 21 cds in all) has become a legedary classic, I don't think I should make any comment. But just a suggestion to those who want to embark on these discs.

Make up your mind on this journey. On facing such a tome record arranged and sung chronically, it's useless and wrong only to listen to some famous lieder or discs or just listen randomly. You should spare a long period of time, begin by listening from the very first disc to the last disc. And, during the period do not listen to any lied of other composers. Then gradually, lied by lied, disc by disc, you will forget this is Fischer-Diskau and Moore---This is a real life of a great soul! You are really touching and breathing with a great soul! Feel the sound of schubert, feel his struggle, his emotion, his feeling, his hate and love. Feel how those youthful spontaneous and raw lieder gradually developed into fully ripened masterpieces. Such wonderful experience belongs only to really patient listeners.

It took me about 2 full weeks to listen to the whole 21 discs. Fischer-Diskau and Moore chose the "Abschied(Farewell)" to be the last lieder read (this song happened to be the only lied of Schubert to be recite with piano accompaniment, and which was composed during his final years). Thus the whole hundreds of lieder, or the whole life of Schubert, ended on this lied, farewell to the earth. It began with "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde (Goodbye, you beautiful Earth)". I will forever remember when I finally came into this lied, on the first words of Diskau's "Leb wohl, du schoene Erde" I trembled and cried from the very first note to the last note. My god, it's untouchable granduer.

      1 out of 5 stars SPRECHSTIMME.......2006-08-09

Everything about this recording is fine except Michael Heltau as Danilo. While everyone is singing in full operatic voice, he is singing in sprechstimme, which is basically more pitched talking than singing. It is incredibly annoying to listen to and does not fit in with the rest of the music, especially when all of the other singers are singing normally.

I would recommend any other recording over this one, particularly the Deutsche Grammophon with John Eliot Gardiner conducting and Cheryl Studer, Boje Skovhus, Barbara Bonney, and Rainer Trost singing.

      1 out of 5 stars Ruined!.......2000-07-27

Michael Heltau's lack of voice in the role of Danilo virtually ruins an otherwise satisfactory recording.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite Fledermaus, but oh that Waltz!.......2000-02-14

By sheer coincidence, I received for review at the same time a copy of "Die Fledermaus" and one of "The Merry Widow." Talk about happiness being a song in 3/4 time! as it is called on Capriccio 60 077-2 claims to be the "Original Version" based on manuscripts found in 1997...and who cares? The infectious joyfulness of this opera has been captured nearly to perfection on these two short CDs (just under 97 minutes in all). There is no libretto provided, making it hard going for one who cannot understand German; but that is a problem only during the dialogue. The wonderful music speaks for itself. The comparison with the Strauss operetta cannot be avoided. "Fledermaus" is a tongue in cheek sex-farce with a great score and the most joyous of all waltzes. "Widow" is about money (thereby placing it accurately a few decades later) and has the loveliest of waltzes. While the Capriccio cast does not quite come up to the classical recording on the old Angel LPs, Helmuth Froschauer and Kolner Rundfunkorchester do full justice to the music while the cast is solid enough: Pamela Coburn (Hanna), Michael Heltau (Danilo), and others who sound right at home in this darling war-horse. It stands up very well against the competition and there is a single CD version with Cheryl Studer in the title role that is a bit more economical and uses the traditional orchestration. But I lean towards this new one, even without the libretto.
