Sasha and his fellow turntable conspirators John Digweed and Paul Oakenfeld have been on impressive winning streaks since the mid- to late '90s, particularly with their increasingly popular and influential Global Underground series. This addition to the cycle, a live set recorded in the Spanish dance-music haven Ibiza, comes close to setting a new standard. Sasha is working solo here, and in addition to showing off his prodigious live mixing skills and inventive use of source material, he creates an undeniable identity for himself. Digweed accomplished the same thing with the masterful Bedrock, but where that record was elegantly light and airy, this one burns with a sharper, more manic energy. Throwing out resolute rhythms and melting house samples bathed in dreamy backdrops, Sasha cuts through dense structures and clever transitions with superhuman alacrity. It does take him a little while, as his use of trance-inducing repetition strays a bit while he establishes a groove on the first disc. Disc 2, however, simply tears into an incredibly danceable vibe. Mixing together melodic snippets and varying moods, from the dark trance of "Fibonacci Sequence" to the ecstatic release of "Xpander" (from his EP of the same name), Sasha mainlines rhythm and creativity through to a satisfyingly exhausted conclusion. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2007-07-07

Quite simply.. Disc 1 is timeless perfection. Best absorbed on a beach, headphones on, when its WAY too hot...

Disc 2 is a bit more cheesy, but best sums up the dance music trends at the time..

ENJOY.

NB: don't bother with other mixes if you didn't enjoy this.. its the best DJ in the world, at the top of his game, during the peak of the electronic music scene, at the dance music capital of the world.

MAGIC!

5 out of 5 stars You are going to love this one!.......2007-06-04

I played this CD for months and months. It transitions nicely from one tune to the next. It is great for driving, exercising, dancing etc...lively, wonderful beat, all excellent selections..its a soundtrack for your own mental movie..buy it..youll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Surviving The Test of Time.......2007-03-08

The release date of this popular Global Underground release was 1999. This is right around the time when progressive house and progressive trance genres really started to come into their own. Very fitting that this compilation was modeled after a set performed in the Meca of all electronica venues...Ibiza. It was very "cutting-edge" for the release date and includes Sasha's very own Xpander on disc 2.

Due to electronica's ever-evolving sound, it is hard to find compilations that don't get tiresome after a few years. In my opinion, Global Underground 013:Ibiza is one of these gems. Disc 1 is one of my personal favorites under the Global Underground label. Eight years later and I never tire of it.

Disc 2 is a little more outdated. I don't like the track selection as much, and have a hard time listening to the whole disc in one sitting. Still enjoyable though.

Disc 1 get 5/5 stars and disc 2 4/5 stars.

This compilation is worth possessing for disc 1 alone.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing achievement for Sasha and the subculture.......2006-12-31

Every dog has his day.
Every DJ has his album.
DJ Sasha found his, preliminarily, with Xpander. He rediscovered himself with Involver. But Ibiza remains his greatest achievement to date, and the proof lies within the brilliant music this man has chosen to present to us, the worthy progressive masses. The recipe for success, in this case is rather simple:
1 Quintessential DJ mixed with 1 Quintessential Trance world locale. Blend, mix and refrigerate. Serves millions.

All cuteness aside, however, this is one truly epic album, and perhaps the greatest achievement of the revered Global Underground series; I think Sasha knew what was expected of him with the release of this double-disc following his wildly popular San Francisco set, and he came through in strides. The typical formula for the GU series is this: Disc one, a bit slower, more patience required, beautiful and majestic yet less danceable, with disc two being the harder-hitting, rave-inducing and generally more well-liked disc. In this sense, Sasha's release is hard to compare with other Global Underground releases.

Disc one is DEEP. Perhaps this is foreshadowed by the titles of the first two tracks? Nonetheless, this disc is one beautiful, powerful and spiritual trip into the psyche. I often meditate to this disc; it's that deep. The tracks are so masterfully crafted, chosen and mixed that where I am in the album in terms of track is no longer any concern. The second half of disc one, while equally and fantastic and mesmerizing, rises the bpm a little and pulsates. Sasha displays a split-personality complex on this first disc, all the while making the two halves seem like a perfectly logical whole.

Disc two is less consistent in terms of the intensity of mood, but by all means this does not make it a lesser disc! This disc is every bit as wonderful as the first and I would challenge anyone to dispute this. "Fibonacci Sequence" has to be one of the most strangely wonderful tracks I have ever heard, with the spoken-word sequence itself oozing in and out of the track. The bass, the beat, everything about this 10+ minute introductory track is impeccable. 'Zoe', 'Perception' and 'The Fly' are very dancable and expertly mixed tracks which blend together in preparation for the one and only 'Xpander' - a beautiful addition to any mix, but especially beautiful when placed in the hands of its creator. He proves he knows exactly how to manipulate not only the work of others, but of himself as well.

Perhaps my favorite part of the entire two-disc set is summed up within the last four tracks on the second disc. Beginning with 'Mercury and Solace' and 'Dreamstate (LSG Mix)' (two tracks that have lulled me to sleep on many an occasion due to their delicate beauty) and 'Heaven Scent' (a Bedrock staple track that I happen to love) finalize this aural apex - but with a twist. Junkie XL's 'Future in Computer Hell (Part 2)', curiously inserted in between Dreamstate and Heaven Scent, is one of the most quintessential breakbeat grooves I have heard in a long, long time. It honestly reminds me of 'Rykketid' or 'One Flew Over The Cocoo's Nest' on Zabiela's Utilities.

The music speaks for itself - like true music should. This is the Five-Star Hotel, the Presidential Suite, the finest Russian caviar of progressive trance mixes, and the cream of the Global Underground crop.

As essential for the 21st century as Renaissance - The Mix Collection was for the 1990s.

5 out of 5 stars this IS sasha's masterpiece.......2006-07-24

this guy is an artist in every regard. i truly believe, with the exception of "live at avalon", that every one of his cds is a masterpiece. but if ever there were a "masterpiece", this would be the one that tops the other ones.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

With pure, transcendental dance-floor ecstasy, Sasha's patient mixes and cosmic samples on this double-CD set establish him as one of the best DJs on the planet. Finding the twists and turns among the endlessly inventive rhythms and mind-blowing sample transitions here is an essential journey for lovers of trance-techno everywhere. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com essential recording

This is the best trance mix of the first half of 1999, at least. Sasha (of Northern Exposure fame) has produced a double-disc set that climbs every house and techno peak while rolling effortlessly along top-quality, luscious trance-techno plateaus. With disc one, think mountains, air, and sweat under clear blue skies, the dreamy trance escapism of DJ Sakin and Friends' "Protect Your Mind" setting the tone. By the time Slickmick's "Lecture" delivers its pumping techno voice, the underlying subliminal metronomic beats have become wholly engaging. Disc two evokes the atmosphere of a great all-night session, and Sasha brings the mix down the hard-stepping edge of trance-techno, as with Mana's "Psionic," and into a hypnotic land of minimalism, illustrated perfectly by the flat beats of Breeder's "The Chain." Generally, the second journey recalls the subterranean feel of the great Berlin nightclubs from years ago. But just to keep things mobile, Breeder's "Twilo Thunder" is fused with the sensibilities of older Jean Michel Jarre material, offering a dreamy breather from the energy. Global Underground's San Francisco is as good a Friday night mix album as you can get. Indeed, if you match this up with a couple of Northern Exposure sets, some friends, and no limits, the hottest club in town could be your place. --Steffan Chirazi

1 out of 5 stars There Has To Be Better Mixes Out There..........2006-11-10

I bought this CD already familiar with the Dance/Trance/Techno scene for years, listened to a few times and never picked it up again. I picked up this CD since it had Tilt's - I Dream (Resurection Remix) - (which is the only track that carries a captivating beat - truly awesome) thinking that the rest of the CD would be just as incredible. Unless your gonna get sloshed or shoot up on something and freak dance to strobe lights amist a booming sound system, don't waste your money on this one. Until I personally decide to do this myself, only then would I rate this a five. Sasha must have better mixes out there that I have not yet discovered, but whatever the case, this CD is a disappointment. Rather than letting this CD uselessly spin in my CD deck, I simply use it as a coaster. I know many will disagree with this review but given the fact that I gave this CD an honest shot, I not writing this as a hater. I simply have not been impressed with this one. This mix carries the same monotonous beat from start to finish. Honestly, there has to be better mixes out there by Sasha... But don't waste your ears on this one.

If you liked other CDs like: Trance Mix USA, BT - Movement In Still Life, ATB - Dj In The Mix, Crystal Method - Vegas & Community Service, any mixes by Dj Micro, Tansport by Paul Oakenfold, Dj Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise, or any Gatecrasher Mix.... This CD may not be the one for you.

1 out of 5 stars ZRODN.......2006-10-26

once again to slow but fast with pitch and bpm off sound rotation. not loud enough no consistent sound or evovled framework that i normally hear from this artist at live raw performances in dance trance genre. i mean this artist is the best but needs to fire the sound or cd production team if you were to hear or see what i see in live performance you kinda wonder why cant anybody bring that brilliance to cd for home use. a lot of good musicians dont have a clue what they are selling to the public because the master copy sounds different from what is being sold and that ofcourse comes from poor planning or bad management team. Dont get me wrong this musician/dj is off the hook but once agian this cd is embarassing and sounds bad i know i can get school kids to blare faster and better beats off a turn table burn it on cd and have all these so called music critics claim that it was the best meshed euphoric sound they have heard , serve the masses nonsense but never claim to understand proper dance format

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-09-10

From the intro to the last track, these cd's are amazing. CD 2 didn't do it for me like cd1 did, but overall this is how house and trance should be. Not a disappointing album in the least. Plus this is old school from 1999. I like this one better than Ibiza, but that is just preference.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best mix CDs ever.......2006-08-27

I am bias towards Global underground, but they produce the best mix CDs out. Out of all 28 volumes (plus all other GU series) this is the best of them all. Every song fits perfectly into a progressive trance/house set. Starting off trippy with grovy mellow tones and by the end of the second CD thumping trance that stays clear of rythms found on most trace mixes (e.g. tiesto), rather dark samples and basslines.

This CD is just as good as Northern Exposure Expeditions and if you are a GU fan or digweed and sasha fan this this is a must have. There are no exceptions, buy it now!

If you like my advice then try these CDs out from the global underground series:
- Trafik - bullet (my fav. album)
- Steve Lawler - Lights out 3
- Nick Warren - Budapest (11) and Shang hi (28)
- Anthony Pappa - NuBreed
- Sasha - Involver (one of my fav. mixes)
- GU10 - Limited edition 4 disc velvet box

If you only listen to one of the above make sure it's trafik - bullet a great group uner the GUMusic label.

Sweet jesus mary joseph and the F%$@*ng donkey this is good. I s*^%t you not. Check out the transistion from the Intro of the street bums to the platform to the banging naughty guitar riff of solid spaxce business that drifts into the DJ Sakin track that elevates into what for me remains one of the most awe inspiring tracks I have ever hear in my adult regardless of genre and you will understand why they call this guy the man like...

5 out of 5 stars Easily the smoothest mix I have heard from Sasha.......2006-05-26

This cd is so smooth it is almost torture to listen to. Forget Ibiza. That's right you heard me. Because it should be illegal to be able to mix like this. This is a true glimpse at what it must feel like when Sasha is mixing in a club in SF. I mean paragliders with the two breeder tracks as bouncers? Nuff said! Buy it and frighten your neighbours

        5 out of 5 stars A Sasha Fan.......2000-05-18

I have been a fan for years, and have been incredible disapointed in alot of his most recent releases. But that was all taken away when I got a hold of this CD-double set. The first CD is very good, but the second (dear lord) - it completely blew me away. I can only compare it to Northern Exposures 3, and I actualy think this is better. I have had this CD for 5 months and I have played it so many times the CD is actual wearing away...

In my opioion it's a must have...

I honestly believed that GU's San Francisco set cannot be matched ... SASHA [has] proved it can be done [again]. The unpolluted dancefloors were again teased by the non-commercial, melodic journey trance set by the man himself... IBIZA: CD 01 is just the warm-up... Sasha has yet touched the finest in his record selection as displayed in CD 02. BUCKLE DOWN and Prepare for the IBIZA FLIGHT. SASHA is at the decks. *As a Dj myself, he is why I play the progressive sounds of true trance in Los Angeles, CA. THANK YOU!

        5 out of 5 stars fresh.......2000-03-21

the first trance cd i ever bought...and still the one i am listening to the most. This double cd is the best, and i would advise you to buy it!. The first disc is a journey of trance, it starts out soft and very clean, then gets deeper, and then harder (tracks 9&10....brilliant!). The 2nd disc is even better, and it shows what a great talent sasha is...the first five tracks will have u in a groove, as they build up to track 5, Xpander (which i believe is sashas best). This cd set is a must to have in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars An awesome piece of deep, really deep, trance............2000-03-10

this cd is my favorite of all my collection, it is simply unbelievable, I listen to it all the time and it still has that first day feeling. The tracks are really good and they are mixed by sasha, I think that's reason enough to get this cd...

4 out of 5 stars Not as live as I thought.......2001-01-30

This double CD box set is a log, of sorts, of the Global Underground Ibiza show in June of 1999. I expected this CD to be like other live techno CDs I own, that is to say I expected to hear the crowd and really be able to feel as if I were at the concert. This is not the case, which is unfortunate. Live in Ibiza is a recording of the songs played, and then mixed together into a seamless progression. It is seriously hard to tell where one song begins and one ends, the mixing is without flaw. The two CDs have songs from such artists as Orbital, Sander Kleinenberg, BT, Bluefish, Junkie XL and more. For sheer listening value this box set is fantastic, but do not expect to feel as if you are at a concert when listening to it. This CD should be considered a compilation, not a live CD.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the smoothest mix I have heard from Sasha.......2006-05-26

This cd is so smooth it is almost torture to listen to. Forget Ibiza. That's right you heard me. Because it should be illegal to be able to mix like this. This is a true glimpse at what it must feel like when Sasha is mixing in a club in SF. I mean paragliders with the two breeder tracks as bouncers? Nuff said! Buy it and frighten your neighbours
Buy it BUY IT BUY IT!!!
