Ive never really heard music like this before. At first it didnt even seem like it was music. But it is pretty interesting. So it could be a good album just to add to a collection.

This album, er, EP, gets 5 stars for those who know what dub, minimal techno, or whatever you want to call it is all about.
If you've never heard of this odd craze, this CD is certainly a GREAT one for starters... heck, it was MY first one, and although I have collected a few more of Pole's CDs as well as a few other artists like Basic Channel or Autechre, this little red CD will always have a special place in my heart.

Now let's talk about the music. An average Joe who's never heard of this style wouldn't even CALL it music. Most likely it would be called a bad radio signal, electronic noise, rubbish. Sure... for the SIMPLE-MINDED. Once you take a moment to open your mind, suddenly you realize that there is rhythm in the static clicks... there's a melody to the bass that can only be found if you have a powerful subwoofer or crank the bass on whatever system you have, and then the next thing you know, your soul is captured by the ambient reverberations caused by the echoing pops tickling your brain. Boy, if only this was mastered in 5.1 Surround!

Don't let an EP scare you away, Pole's "2" is worth an album price, it's the best Pole in my opinion.

This second release (more of an EP, really) by Stefan Betke as Pole sees a lot more reliance on a dub-bass underpinning than on the first Pole release. And even though much of what's above that sticks to the crackly-sputter-pop aesthetic of the first CD, the dubbier approach seems to ground these tracks a lot better than before. Although, again, while this crosses Basic Channel's turf according to some, Basic Channel it ain't. This is a good bit more abrasive than 90+% of those tracks. Plus, it gets tiring after a few listenings, as you really hope for Betke to wrench some different sorts of sounds out of that Waldorf 4-Pole he's so enamored of. I give it four stars here, but a barely-qualified four stars, teetering on 3 1/2 if I could go there. Again, the Basic Channel sampler, Monolake, and Various Artists' "Decay Product" are your better bets for this sort of thing, I think.

Crackles, sparks, pops, hisses, and static farts generally provide the percussion throughout this truly interesting album. Definitely background music, Pole 2 pulls its influences (barely) from dub and at times ragga (to even lesser extent). It's surprisingly minimalist and sparce but still manages to create an dense aesthetic.

Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment (NA 421912) afforded me.

Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.

His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).

My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

            Album Description

            Songs of Grechaninov (BRIDGE 9142), with soprano Georgine Resick accompanied by pianist Warren Jones.

            This disc presents thirty-three songs by the Russian born Aleksandr Grechaninov (1864-1956). The performances (sung in Russian) sample a broad range of Grechaninov's work, from children's songs (Snowflakes) to the Russian National School; and from Impressionist/Symbolist influenced works to songs based on Folk texts. Georgine Resick is a protegée of the late George London. Renowned for her Mozart and Strauss interpretations, she has sung a wide variety of leading roles with the Vienna State Opera, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Paris Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera. Warren Jones has been the distinguished accompanist for Marilyn Horne, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Kathleen Battle, and many other leading vocalists of our time.

              I actually picked up this album at the Folger Shakespeare library, the D.C. library/theater at which the Folger Consort is based. I listened to it and was immediately pleased. The instrumental pieces aren't quite my thing, but they're very well executed. The madrigals, though, which make up about half of the album, are just superb. My title really says it all--these recordings are sensitive, energetic, and really just excellent. Pick it up and enjoy.
