3 out of 5 stars Where is the bass Maceo?.......2005-06-15

After reading the many 'rave' reviews about this album (and having the odd album of Maceo's already) I promptly followed suit and ordered my own. I must say that after listening to it I was fairly unimpressed.

Yes there is definitely some great funk on here and virtuoso playing. But, and here's a few butts for ya!

1) Where is the bass??? - I have a high end audio system and I would have to say that this is about the most anemic disc I have ever heard! The one very thing that funk needs is a solid backbeat and bottom end and this disc just doesn't have any. With any luck you can crank on the bass control on your system but why do we have to do this? The recording/mastering engineers should have known better.

2) Candy Dulfer - might be pretty but she doesn't add anything funky to this disc. Reminiscent of Kenny G and would have been better off this album.

3) Maceo's singing (assuming its him) - better spent wrapping his lips around a reed. Sweet Georgia is a tired old tune, not much for funk either and basically is a big lead sinker.

4) 'So Good' sped up wasn't very inspiring either and the original James Brown version (which he obviously would have played on also) just wipes it by comparison. Nothing inspiring with this selection.

I could go on, but these were the main beefs...

I'm sure the guy is great live, but this record, judged on its merits (rather than some memory of a concert of years ago that others seem to be recalling) is only average.

Cheers, Kendrick

5 out of 5 stars Ooooh, what's that you're doin'? Sure looks good to me!.......2005-04-06

This is the best live performance ever recorded, EVER. I'd give my right leg to have been there.

Any drummers here? There's enough tight licks to send you to the woodshed to practice for a decade. Almost every backbeat sends chills down my spine.

This album is truly a testament to instrumental musicians. Everybody plays their part, nobody steps on anyone else, each musician inspires the others to play their best, and the result is a sublime collective whole. Machines will never groove as hard humans, and this album is proof.

I'm on my third copy in over a decade, the CDs just can't seem to hold up to the amount of times I play them.

5 out of 5 stars If for nothing else, to rock your party.......2005-02-12

This album is great and in heavy rotation from my collection. The version of "Shake Everything You Got" will bring any room full of loungers and chatters to their feet and really get the party rolling.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest way to discover Maceo Parker.......2004-12-30

Undoubtedly the greatest way to discover Maceo Parker. This live recorded at Cologne in 1992 bring together Maceo, Fres Wesley, Pee We Elis and more guest (Kim Mazel, Candy Dufler...).

5 out of 5 stars Maceo needs a crown - he'e the king........2004-10-05

Maceo Parker was always James Brown's right-hand man, and for good reason. He is one smokin' sax player. But he's more than that. He's one of very few icons in the world of funk. Ask anyone. It just doesn't get as good as Maceo. He's raw, powerful and sooooo soulful. Like some of the other reviewers, I've had the good fortune of seeing him live a few times, and he never disappoints. Most people his age are kicking back in their Lazy-Boys and collecting their retirement checks. Maceo is out there blowin' his horn so hard the roof could fly off the building. And like few live albums out there, this album is actually able to capture a lot of that vibe. Played through some good speakers, "Life On Planet Groove" is liable to get the dead up and dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Collection of Artists!!!.......2002-03-01

BET did us a favor and started a show called,"Planet Groove". And while the show received the axe in favor of something else better, at least these songs survived. These songs are by newcomers and old-timers. Janet (yes, that Janet. Miss Jackson because she's nasty) starts it off with her soft, "I Get Lonely." Mariah suffers from a "Breakdown" (no pun intended) with the help sometime R-N-B singer/rapper thugs, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Mya proclaims her womanhood in, "It's All About Me", with former Dru Hill frontman, Sisqo. A nice catchy tune, without any male-bashing. Brian McKnight slows it down a bit with "Anytime", a perfect song about reminiscing on a past someone/relationship. Jon B adds his "They Don't Know" to the already impressive list of songs. Chico (good thing he dropped "DeBarge" from his moniker) returns with soulful crooner, Joe, on the "No Guarantee" (remix). Honestly, folks, I like this one better than the original. Next sings the praises of a woman "who has that bomb lovemaking. She also has a "...sundress on, feet pedicured with no corns..." in "Butta Love." (Sounds like someone has a foot fetish to me. But hey, whatever floats your boat.) Ms. Badu comes back and brings and ill-fated unwanted visitor, "Tyrone." In the opening lines, you can feel her animosity. "I'm getting tired of your ...!" {Gee, if breaking up was just that easy!} That was an original, that came (surprise!) impromptu but was also featured on her "Live!" album as well as a remix that was even longer. Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill and Gerald Levert formed the ill-fated group, LSG. But before they split and went on their separate ways, they created the monster hit, "My Body". Lyrics like..."want to feel your precious treasure wrapped around me oh-so-tightly. In, out and want to hear you shout...", you'll see why women were losing their minds all over the world!!! R. Kelly's protege, Sparkle, reminds that we should "Be Careful." Montell Jordan gets down and dirty with the help of Master "Make'em Say Unggghhhh" P. and his brother, Silk the Shocker on "Let's Ride," where he sings about a woman being "5'5, 146 and wearing nothing but a Gstring. Chocolate lips and sexy thighs..." I think you get the picture! SWV sings about "The Rain", a slow tune about someone's love coming down like rain. Boyz II Men give praises to their mommas on "A Song for Mama", a tune that was first featured on the Soul Food Sdtrk. I think I liked it better on that sdtrk than I do here. There is entirely too much raunchiness going on to be singing to Mama. Xscape returns to their roots, as well as their churchy-sound, on "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You," a slow tune about if things just don't work out, I can kiss away your boo-boo's and make it better! This entire album is worth the money that I spent and then some. Go get this one!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CD's.......1999-11-25

I love this CD especially the last song on it. Definately a good buy

5 out of 5 stars This is the most bomb CD out!.......1999-04-16

This CD is so bomb. It has every song that I like. This saves me money because I like to go and buy my favorite songs, but the I would have to buy alot of different CD's for one song each. This is the most bomb idea out, all the best songs out in one CD. My personal favorite(aside from all the other ones on the CD) is Mariah Carey in "Breakdown". That is truely the best. I love this CD and I love Planet groove. Keep doing ya' thang Rachel!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a must buy!.......1999-04-12

This CD has the best songs! It is great to have a CD I can listen to all the time. I'm so happy they put Janet on this CD. Buy this CD right now.

5 out of 5 stars Prophetic Worship -- par excellance!.......2005-12-10

I read the first review and have NO idea what that person expected from this CD. But Cloud By Day is one of the most powerful prophetic cds out and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in prophetic music...especially edgy, "out of the box" music. And besides, the quality of its instrumentation and vocals is super as well.

    1 out of 5 stars cloud by day-prophetic worship.......2005-09-13

With all due respect to the artists and worshippers involved in what I am sure was a great investment, this cd was a considerable disappointment. The words "prophetic worship" carry significant weight and should be used with great care.
I encourage that this cd be sampled before purchasing and hope that others disagree.

Max, you never cease to amaze me! OPOG is just the beginning! One More River is my absolute favorite although I have to admit the rest of the tracks are filled with his soulful voice and if you have ever seen this man in concert live you will understand the "chemistry" that he has with HIS music! Keep up the good work and I am anxiously awaiting more!

5 out of 5 stars The best unknown blue eyed soul singer......ever.................2004-11-03

Here's the bottom line- Max Carl plays and sings as well and soulfully as others with more success. I have never been able to figure out why this incredibly talented man has not broken through..For my money, "If You Stay",is worth the price of the album alone.Produced with Glenn Frey, this is an essential addition for fans of AWB/Hall & Oates/Michael Mc Donald,et al...........

5 out of 5 stars Max Carl & Big Dance.......2002-09-20

This album is far and above the freshest, most brilliant music to hit the airwaves in years and continues to be since its release in 1998. This music appeals to all genres including my 3 teenage daughters. Put the headphones on and listen to every word of every track... you will not be disappointed.
Max where are you? We're anxiously awaiting the sequel!

5 out of 5 stars BEST RECORD OF THE YEAR.......1999-05-12

the best voice in pop, max is a legend waiting to happen. 'everything old. . .' is the best written pop song since maybe 'the pretender.' the groove of 'one more river,' the soul of 'hold on to your woman,' the energy of 'rollin' and tumblin',' this is one for the long haul. buy one for your mom. buy one for all your friends. buy one for your dog. repeated listening cures cold sores. buy this, and you WILL be a better human. . .

5 out of 5 stars This is the most exciting CD I've listened to in ages........1998-11-10

Its extremely rare for me to find a CD that I like to listen to over and over. This is one of the rare ones. Great instrumental backgrounds, a variety of pace and lyrics, and sound singing ability. I had never heard any of this music before and just happened to listen to samples and immediately purchased it. I anxiously await Max Carl's next release.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but not 100% great.......2007-07-12

This CD was certainly a great purchase, but it is not the kind you buy and enjoy all the songs in the exact same way. It mixes well samba songs with a few which are more pop-samba oriented. I am rating it as a 4 because I personally don't like this extinct group called Os Mutantes and would easily replace the songs of Bebeto and Copa 7 by songs of more expressive Brazilian samba/pop artists.

5 out of 5 stars Samba Soul Grooooove.......2004-05-28

Samba Soul distinguishes it self from Caipirinha and The Girls from Ipanema because of its uniqueness. Samba, unlike Bossanova brings out a rhythm that can't keep you still. Samba Soul Groove will bring out your party mood into full gear. This Cd collectively gathers the best of Samba and its pop singles in one CD to make sure you can have a great time anywhere that its listened to. It is a great Cd that completes the Pure Brazil Collection.
