People that are ordering this album are forgetting that fact that you are ordering an IMPORT cd. Needless to say, it comes from another country. Take the price increase into affect once you realize that fact. Album is wonderful and is NOT over-rated or overly pricey, contrary to popular belief.

5 out of 5 stars Even more genius!.......2007-02-19

Although I have downloaded the iTunes versions of every song on this CD, I didn't have the video. In fact, I didn't have a hard copy of the songs, which is why I ordered this CD.

Not to mention, the artwork and packaging is as brilliant as the "The Eraser." Good artwork on a CD always grabs my attention. Stanly Donwood's artwork for this CD series is captivating, none more so than his work for "The Eraser." If I could, I would have prints in my home. However, since his prints were limited, it's a loss I regret. It was too late by the time I discovered "Thom Yorke's" music.

Now that I own this CD, I can say without doubt all the songs are undeniably astonishing, and perhaps slightly different from the other "Eraser" EP's. The difference could be just my imagination - I'm not sure.

Whilst "Thom Yorke's" talent (and recording technique) maintain a grip on my imagination, I can't help wonder why some of these songs weren't part of "The Eraser" project itself. I'm thinking of songs such as "Jetstream," "Iluvya," "A Rat's Nest" and, "The Drunk Machine" from another EP.

Yet, I daren't carp. It would do me no good.

These songs are haunting, and play 'round and 'round in ones mind. They are recorded with remarkable precision over and above the attention paid to the smallest detail contained in them.

It follows for me to refer to the sequencing of this EP. Whomever sequenced this EP nailed it well. Other EP's with the same or similar songs sometimes can be a bit unbalanced. Since sequencing can make or break a project I find this is not the case for this project.

Those in to a degree of comparison among past recordings (and technique) by "Thom Yorke" and "Radiohead," bewilder me somehow. Such assessments make it difficult to understand any reason for drawing attention away from this CD. What one hears on these B-sides (if that's what they really are, as I consider them A-sides) is unparalleled artistry. Such artistry does not require vulgar flash. Glitz would be too much for "Yorke" - or "Radiohead."

I should think over the years, "Radiohead" and "Thom Yorke" fans (if that's what we are-, horrid word fan) can rationally forecast a varying degree of artistic expression after each excursion into a studio. Funnily enough, though, they never lose their established essence. With "Thom Yorke's" "Spitting Feathers" and "The Eraser" that is exactly what one gets, a different form of artistry - but one knows it is the work of "Thom Yorke." There is artistic skill on this CD (and "The Eraser") well beyond what one normally hears everywhere else these days.

As a classical music connoisseur, I have nonetheless, always been a "Zep" fan, as well as a fan of others in the same genre.

Even so, the work of "Thom Yorke" (and "Radiohead") fit a style of expression that is unique. "Thom Yorke" simply cannot be compared to anyone nor suppressed. Since "Thom Yorke" and "Radiohead" are new to me, there is unquestionably a wealth of imagination and inspiration in their entire catalog, which I'm reveling in. This speaks to the power of the right music in great motion pictures. In fact, the movie "A Scanner Darkly" introduced me to "Thom Yorke" and "Radiohead."

As a result, for me, these songs alone are well worth the coin. To be sure, this rare CD will (one day) cost three times as much from those who sell out-of-print rare LP's, rare CD's, and press packs.

Lastly, the video is marvelous. Although I don't excessively praise music videos often, I must say I like the "Harrowdown Hill" video. The imagery and subject matter is relevant. The video is a bonus for those who have only seen it online. I had only seen it once. Thus, I welcome this CD. It has everything music lovers want.

3 out of 5 stars Good music; poor video quality.......2007-02-07

This EP is very overpriced. Though I like the music tracks that are on it, it's just not worth the price. The quality of the video (as in the encoding, not the production) is so low that that doesn't add much value to the purchase either. I'd venture to guess you could find a higher-quality encoding of the video on bittorrent somewhere. This purchase is only for the most most hardcore fans and collectors.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for True Fans.......2007-02-07

It's more from Mr. Yorke. Need I say more?

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but pricey........2007-01-14

Spitting Feathers is a fine little collection of 5 b-sides. One of them is a remix of "Harrowdown Hill", but the others are all brand new (although I assume they were available on Japanese singles or someplace). It makes for an interesting EP that does a good job of complementing The Eraser. There are a couple songs on here that I like better than those that made the LP cut. "Iluvya" is a silly idea, but it makes for a strangely endearing song. The remix of "Harrowdown Hill" is better than the original.

The only real negative about this collection is its price. I managed to find a used version for $5 at my local shop. It's a no-brainer at that price. At listprice, though, it's probably only worth it for hardcore Yorke fans.

3 out of 5 stars Should have been called a Greatest Hits Collection.......2006-10-17

I agree with the other reviewer that said this was an odd compilation with an inappropriate and misleading title. While this is called the EP Collection Volumes 1 & 2, this is sadly not the case at all. In fact, this collection is missing quite a few songs from their actual respective ep releases and instead replaces them with common album tracks instead leaving this far from a complete ep collection at all.

I have recently compiled every single and ep from their initial Escapable EP to the Shining Road Double Single onto cd-r's and still had a little room to spare on the first disc. The following is what I compiled in complete and chronological order and what should have been released if this were to have been a real EP Collection. Songs with the asterisk are the songs that are missing from their EP Collection.

My Compilation:
Disc 1
01. Inescapable
02. Give
03. Dada 331
*04. Inescapable II (Inescapable EP)
*05. Untitled (Gigantic 2 compilation)
06. I Hope
07. E.G. Shining
08. Cha Cha Escueta
09. Adoration
10. Brigher
11. Tomorrow's Tears
12. Casa Blanca
*13. Sixth Of May (Wings Of Joy CD)
14. Dreamless
15. Starblood Remix (hidden on the official release)
*16. Fuse (Self-Non-Self CD)
*17. Self-Non-Self (Wings Of Joy Bonus 12")

Disc 2
01. Adrift
*02. Everywhere (common track on Forever)
03. Underwater
*04. The Puppet (Forever UK Bonus CD)
*05. Shine Like Stars (Forever German/UK Bonus CD)
*06. At Sea (Forever German Bonus CD)
07. Slide (hidden on the official release)
*08. Wings Of Joy (Forever German Bonus CD)
*09. Trumpet Song (Forever German Bonus CD)
*10. Jewel (Robert Smith Remix)(Jewel CD-Single)
*11. Leave Her To Heaven I (Jewel German CD-Single)
*12. Leave Her To Heaven II (Jewel German CD-Single)
*13. Clear (Ring Tailed Snorter Mix) (Jewel CD-Single)
*14. Cloudless (Thais Mix) (Jewel CD-Single)
15. Shining Road
16. Lilies
17. September
*18. Green Song 7 (Shining Road CD-Single)
*19. Shining Road (Brauer Mix)(Shining Road CD-Single)
20. Lilies (Flood Mix)
*21. Don't Close Your Eyes (Shining Road CD-Single)
*22. Organ Song (Shining Road CD-Single)

Now looking at that, you are missing 5 songs from disc 1 and a whopping 15 songs from disc 2. And thats considering that I was including album songs that were originally on the eps/singles which could have been removed to make room for more of the senseless Forever Remixes that add nothing to the songs anyways. In fact, some of the best songs like Leave Her To Heaven I & II and the awesome Robert Smith remix of Jewel were completely ignored. Granted, some of the missing songs probably should be left missing, but my aim was to have a complete ep/singles collection unlike the one offered to us. Oddly enough, there are two hidden tracks tacked on to the last song on disc 2 of the official release which contains the songs Slide and Starblood(Remix). Unfortunately you have to wade through 5 minutes of silence before you get to them. I've never understood nor cared for this "hidden" track gimmick.

All in all, this isn't a bad way to get a lot of hard to find and expensive ep/singles tracks and to also get a good best of collection of Cranes songs. Unfortunately, some of the missing songs are extremely hard/rare to find and often times very expensive if found. I just wish they would have put together something that was more in line with what they were claiming to offer.

I give this 3 stars for being a decent collection of ep/singles and common songs for the casual Cranes collector listener. But I dock it 2 stars for the inappropriate title and missing an abundance of very hard to find tracks.

4 out of 5 stars strange and beautiful band.......2005-09-24

it's very safe to say that Cranes are a unique band. the music is simple and sometimes very stark with minimal elements that add a touch of fragile beauty. their unique appeal is only strengthened by the vocals, which at times, sound like a frightened child. Cranes have created a musical landscape that borrows from the composer Satie, Cocteau Twins, and maybe even a little bit of Velvet Underground. but they have twisted all these elements into a form and shape that is all their own. a challenging listen that is worth investigation.

5 out of 5 stars words..........2004-01-06

Out of all of the albums I have, and I am SERIOUSLY obsessed with music...I would say The Cranes' music has gotten deep into a part of me that all other pieces of music I've heard have failed to reach. I, like many others, discovered The Cranes through The Cure. The mood is similar to The Cure, but overall The Cranes are very, very different. Where The Cure are heavier, moodier and much grander in their theartical, epic depression, The Cranes are much more subtle, fragile, and achingly, hauntingly, unbearably beautiful. They're a perfect balance between Treasure by the Cocteau Twins and Disintegration by The Cure. Sad, mourning, ethereal, but calmer and more purely sad and beautiful than The Cure and less sweet than The Cocteau Twins. As another reviewer said, I also associate The Cranes with a very happy part of my life, so I guess I might be a little biased, but all I know is The Cranes are one of the only bands besides possibly Rasputina, My Bloody Valentine or Kate Bush that I never tire of. We are all searching for that totally emotionally satisfying band that speaks to us and soothes us. This might be it for me. Buy their stuff and see for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction to The Cranes for newbies like me.......2003-02-12

The Cranes have an effective formula and they use it a bunch, at least in this collection of songs. Alison Shaw's helium-laced vocals float alongside brother Jim's sinister power pop. It's like Little Red Riding Hood singing along with the big bad wolf. Another comparison would be Jarboe (formerly of Swans) doing the soundtrack for a David Lynch movie. The music has a lean, edgy rhythm that leaves just enough room for the singing.

Highlights, Disc One:
"Beach Mover" - This one sounds a lot like something Jarboe or Lydia Lunch would do.
"Inescapable" - Power pop with David Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti menace.
"Give" - Good contrast between fragile vocals and Concrete Blonde-esque rock.
"Cha Cha Escueta" - The conga drum lightens the music up a little. Has a strong 80's British "alternative" sound.
"Brighter" - An excellent goth dance track, with Spanish guitar.
"Dreamless" - This one sounds like a Cranes cover of Swans. Perfect killer-in-the-basement pop.

Disc Two:
"September" - Soothing flanged folk guitar, though it's hard to make out the words. A great rainy-day song.
"Adoration" - More David Lynch lounge music.
"Paris and Rome (Flood Mix)" - Alternates between a 60's lounge song and "Disintegration"-era Cure.
"Lilies (Flood Mix)" - OK, enough soft stuff...POW! Sounds like Hole, with a better singer.
"Tangled Up" - Another nice acoustic guitar ballad.
"Breeze" - Sounds like every car commercial on TV right now. (NOT The Cranes' fault.)
"In The Temple" - A good one if you like Black Tape for a Blue Girl's "The Scavenger Bride." German expressionism with French words.

It's a good retrospective, though quite a few of the songs are similar in key and style. When you hear the little girl singing in the unlit basement, the music reminds you not to go down there alone.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2001-06-17

I really like the Cranes. They are masters of dreamy atmospheres and cinematic rock. This double album doesn't include all of their best tracks, like Jim's track "Stalk" from Population Four or the absolutely essential "Far Away" from Forever. EP Collection 2 is obviously the better disk, but if you're new to the band, then this is the way to start. Like many true art bands, Cranes have been through unfortunate disputes with labels that refused to release art rather than shallow entertainment. But like other bands before them, they've persevered. In fact, they just released a new album directly over the internet.

And to the imbecile named "LP", her name is Alison, and she doesn't have to try to sound like that; it's actually her normal voice.

3 out of 5 stars Not as much fun nowdays.......2007-07-25

My husband bought this because it was his favorite CD when he was a teenager, running around and partying with his friends. Now that he's older, he can't remember why he thought it was so cool.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece with only a few flaws(due to age).......2007-07-15

It really should be a staple in any D n' B collection. He makes guys like Roni Size look like child's play, although he has a place in my CD collection as well :)

The sampling is at times hilarious and his production is very full and lush. Sometimes it does sound a little dated and the looping becomes a little obvious and repetitive, but I'd say that only happens 1 out of 5 or 6 songs... and it doesn't keep up like that for long. But the songs that are good(and there are alot), are amazing. and you can definitely see how Aphex Twin was influenced by this. Every once in a while it will break down into an all out Drill n' base Solo!

An amazing release and full of all sorts quirks and lovely humor. my advice is to be sure to listen to the CD's all the way thru like, it's so much better that way. And your getting 2 CDs for the price of one!

If your into D n' B, Luke Vibert(in general), or any of his Warp/Rephlex buddies, I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars You Won't Regret It.......2005-07-16

Ok, so in '98 I picked up this album, used, from my local store, for really cheap. I don't remember what prompted me to get it, I didn't even know what Drum and Bass was at the time. IT IS CLASSIC! Luckiest purchase ever! I thought it was some extremely underground album (ok, so maybe I was right), but it is core genre, and extremely listenable to boot. If I could have only one D+B album, this would be it! Buy it! NOW!

5 out of 5 stars The Cornfed kid likes it!!!.......2005-04-27

I bought this album when it was first released in my younger days. I grew up in the mid-west(kansas). I remember going to the mall and asking the store person if they had any drum&bass music. He simply replied "you mean like African?". Needless to say somehow I found this album and fell in love with it. It was my first intro to this type of electro-music. I still consider it a classic music album full of variety and textures that any "music lover with a beat"would appreciate. Give it a try I belive it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Easily one of the greatest lp's in the genre!.......2004-10-06

This double disc is definately in my top 5 all time albums. Extremely musical, considering all the dark techstep coming out in 96, and soooo well produced. Luke Vibert always has been one to mix genres and this is no exception. Jazz, DnB, classical, soul, you name it and its on here and it all works to form an incredible DnB album. Many of the songs are through composed (non repetition of musical sections) and this makes for really adventurous music that takes the listener on a journey. GET YOUR ASS TO MARS AND BUY IT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Design's for Def Jux/Should be singed to Def Jux.......2006-04-01

Hailing from NYC by way of Connecticut, Bisc1 is what you might expect out of the underground. He is an amalgamation of the Def Jux sound mixed with some of his own flavor thrown in their for good measure. Starting as a graf artist and currently doing design work for many independent labels (including Def Jux) Bisc has been perfecting his craft as an emcee for a minute. His beats are a mix of the original dusty boom bap drums with some of the new techno influences that can be found throughout many releases. As a lyricist Bisc does a good job on this EP showing us what he is about. Whether talking about all the pieces that it takes to live this culture on "Pieces" (4) or discussing the haters and how he has no time for `em on "Crumbs" (2) he know how to get his point across and flow to the beat in just such a way that his sound intrigues you and invites you in to listen closer. With only six tracks Bisc1 makes his intro to the world quick and to the point: He has his style and your gonna get with it or not. My suggestion peep him out and you will not be disappointed

        4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-12-24

I had never heard of Far or Onelinedrawing before somehow landing on this page a few weeks ago. After listening to a few samples, I put this ep on my wish list for Amazon, and over the holidays my friends purchased almost my entire list. While sifting through my plethora of cds, I stumbled upon this. I had forgotten all about it, but as soon as I put it into my computer I fell in love. Well, not really, but I enjoyed the cd a lot more than most of the cds I've bought this year. I recommend this to anyone, because it really isn't scene-specific. If you're close-minded and specifically dedicated to "emo" or "hardcore" or "goth" or any of the other fake sub-divisions of rock, you'll probably debunk this, because it is pretty mellow for rock. But then again, so are the Shins, and they are a magnificent band. I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that you should listen with an open mind, and if you do, you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Jonah goes further and exceeds limitations.......2003-07-19

Being a fan of Far and after their abrupt break-up a couple years back and never getting the chance to see them live it left me longing for more. And then came this ep which in one word is just Brilliant! It is filled with great inspirational numbers like the opener "Better Than This" but at the same time their are songs of regret and loss of hope like the closer "Tides". But they don't bring you down if anything they make you get up and do something. Their are good old pop songs on here too like "15,000" and "14-41",but at the same time they are so much more. My favorite track on the album would have to be "Aeroplanes" which in my opinion is the most beautiful piece of music since Radiohead's "Exit Music (For A Film)". I hope Jonah keeps churning these out because he is incredible at what he does and i can't say enough great things about this ep.

5 out of 5 stars Best OLD release.......2002-10-11

Visitor was too poppy, Always New was too folky, but this one is just right. Six great songs by Jonah, all emotional and rocking. Quality stuff. The only complaint I have is that "14 to 41" sounds a bit unfinished, but if you just replace it with the version of Thriller, this is a near-perfect EP. If you like Onelinedrawing, definately check out Neutral Milk Hotel. Now THAT'S some good acoustic rock.

        4 out of 5 stars Good EP.......2001-04-21

After buying both Far albums, I wanted more. Fortunatly, Onelinedrawing has decent EP's out. This EP sounds like a less complex version of Water and Solutions, and has an upbeat feeling to it. Jonah has proved himself as talented a vocalist as Maynard from Tool, and uses his melodic skills much more than in Far. The only reason I'd give this four stars is that it isn't as deep as most of the music I listen to. The first time hearing any of the songs except for Tides, you catch pretty much every element of the song, and I like music that goes deeper. But overall, this is a good EP.

4 out of 5 stars on his own.......2000-08-20

I personally heard this album before hearing anything made by Jonah's former band, Far. However, i think that anything Jonah has done shimmers, and this album is a wonderful introduction to Jonah's new sound. Sketch #2 came out in March of 2000, and it is hard to find. Wonderful, quiet songs fill this album, with a touch of the excitement found in Far.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars God save the Kinks.......2005-01-08

The Kinks were one of the most criminally underrated bands in the history of rock and roll. Part of the problem in the United States was that much of the band's music focused on traditional English themes and could be seen as conservative during their greatest period, the late 60's and early 70's. Most of the rock bands of the era were promoting revolution, while the Kinks longed for a return to the village green of yore. Also, The Kinks were banned from performing live in the United States due to a dispute with the musician's union.

This collection of ten EP's put out by the band covers their most productive period of 1964-74, before Ray Davies decided to start writing music hall operas (but that's another story.) Blasting off with the quintessential garage anthem "Louie Louie" the band sets the tone for their raucous early recordings. Their most well known work follows "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night" and the ominous "Sunny Afternoon" put The Kinks at the forefront of the British invasion on both sides of the Atlantic.

Then The Kinks became more album oriented and singles became less a part of the band's overall concept. Which isn't to say that the band couldn't spin off an amazing stand alone song. "Waterloo Sunset" which is found on this collection and also as the final track on the Something Else album has competition only from R.E.M.'s "Nightswimmng" as the most beautiful pop song ever written (ahem... Todd and Matthew.) Also from the same album is "David Watts" a blasting up-tempo send up of the beautiful people in a high school setting.

For those who have most of the records from this period, there are some obscurities that can make this collection attractive, non-album tracks like "Milk Cow Blues" and "Gotta Get the First Plane Home." This is an excellent supplement to the overview records Greatest Hits and The Kink Kronikles both of which have been released on Reprise.
