well worth the wait........2001-05-30

For those of you who enjoyed Bahamadia's multiple guest appearances from 1994-1999, this solo album was indeed well worth the wait.

In my opinion, there isn't much more refreshing in the hip-hop world today than an intelligent, well-spoken woman who can rhyme the hell out of just about anyone.

As well, the beats and production on this album are top notch - including one track with d n' b breaks; truly an eclectic and fun mix of the best hip-hop has to offer.

The Queen Is Back!.......2001-05-19

"BB Queen's Intro" sets up the album momentum,with DJ Revolution scratching in some tight sample cuts.On "Special Forces," the Cali Agents and Chops join Bahamadia for this hot track.DJ Revolution also adds a scratching hook,with the best part being when a line from Prodigy: 'We move like the special forces green beret': is heard in the mix."Commonwealth (cheap chicks)" is a song for all the women,where Bahamadia tells the women to just relax and do their thing."One-4-Teen (funky for you)" is a laid-back track,with Slum Village coming in with a great vocal hook.This song is perfect for one of those late-night undeground Hip Hop party spots."Philadelphia" serves as the album's intermission period.Dwele produces and sings over this meditative track,giving out an ode to Philly.Dwele also produces "Beautiful Things," and joins Bahamadia while she lyrically exposes the depths of her contemplating consciousness.On this song,you definately have to listen to what she is saying because she is talking about something of substance.I like to think of this track as representing the underground Hip Hop version broadcast of say...CNN news.This song is very enchanting and will definately soothe the listener.Things get really amped-up on the last track,"Pep Talk." Bahamadia flows over a subtle drum-n-bass background,once again,rousing the listener.

Too bad this album was not a full-length album because when you reach the end of it,you are left with wanting more music.But since it is Bahamadia,I am happy regardless of the quantity because she gives you pure Hip Hop quality.

Bahamadia makes her claim.......2001-04-14

Bahamadia debuts on this album and makes a more than fair stake for her claim.Although I think she is wickedly intelligent and tough to talk bad about, I will say that this album does not have a great composition. With only seven tracks, it's hard to really get your head bouncing to any of her cuts. There is no real depth to this album, but she does have great potential for future albums.

Incredible album.......2001-02-16

This is a really incredible album. It shows that Bahamadia's still got it after her widely-praised-by-the-underground/hip hop heads effort "Kollage". Great songs. My favorite songs are "Beautiful Things" (which is one of my favorite songs of 2000), "Commonwealth (Cheap Chicks)" (which has a crappy video that doesn't fit the original integrity of the song), "Philadelphia" (with its melodic, dreamlike rhythm) and basically every song from beginning 'til end. It's worth the purchase. She represents the Illadeph side nicely.

Excellent content, but it's too short........2000-12-17

Bahamadia is probably the best female MC in hip-hop today. Her silky smooth voice melts like butter over every track she blesses.
BBQueen could've scored 5 stars had it been longer. Special Forces kicks things off with an upbeat tempo, and some worthy guest spots courtesy of Rasco, Planet Asia, Chops, & DJ Revolution. Commonwealth addresses some of the "cheap chicks" not only in hip-hop, but in society. One-4-Teen (Funky For You) is one of the smoothest tracks of the year. Philadelphia features a nice vibe and some good harmony courtesy of Dwele. Beautiful Things is yet another standout which showcases her true lyrical talent. And Pep Talk is a mesmerizing track on which she spits rapid-fire over a great beat.
There is not one misguided track on this album, but again, it's just too short. Maybe another 5 or 6 tracks, and this could've easily been a classic.
That said, it's still highly recommended.

Not that hot.......2003-07-02

I purchased this CD and was very disappointed in the quality of the playing. The four musicians play with an almost unbearably bright tone color and their technique together is not as clean as some other groups. Don't waste your time here - pick up a recording the Rascher Quartet or Paul Cohen's quartet instead.

How Adolphe envisaged the sound?.......2003-06-27

This CD is well worth getting for the quality of the sound. I've never heard such a pure tone from the saxophone before and the four players here blend so perfectly that you are not actualy aware that it is saxophones playing. Listen to the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba - Marvellous! even though I can't help imagining Clarinets, Oboes and Basoons.
For anyone (like myself) who plays saxophone, this one is a must have as a reference CD on quality Classical Sax playing.

Saxophone Quartet the way it should be!.......2001-02-02

I was absolutely blown away by the musicality of the performers and how the intonation of the ensemble was perfect! Also, the pieces are very technically difficult, but played with absolute precision. I would recommend this CD to every sax lover!

For anyone who loves the sound of the saxophone played the way it was intended by it's inventor...this is the recording for you. Everything about this recording is enjoyable...the selection of songs, the performance, the recording quality. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who loves the awsome beauty of the saxophone quartet.

Where Is Her Full Length At? (3.5 Stars).......2004-05-25

I'm not gonna pretend that Bahamadia is the best female MC to ever grace this planet or act like this type of hip hop will purify your soul, or forgive you or your sins, or whatever.....but this is a very solid EP. It's not going to move the heavens and earth, but it's worth the money though. The intro and the first track lead you to believe that this EP was going to have a harder edge than it actually had. The album gets smoother as it goes on. The intro is a showcase of DJ Revolution's skills. "Special Forces" is a b-boy track that showcases the underrated skills of Planet Asia, Rasco, & Chops with a little help from DJ Revolution. "Commonwealth" is bouncy yet smooth with a tight hook to it. "One 4 Teen" has Slum Village on the hook and still seemed a little boring, but the beat was hot. "Philadelphia" is a 3 minute track that features a then unknown Dwele crooning in the background. My only beef with this song is that she doesn't rap on it. It sounds like a B side from The Roots' "Illadelph Halflife", but it fits the album. "Beautiful Things" also features Dwele and walks the same line as "Philadelphia" but this time, Bahamadia actually rhymes on it and it has a message. "Pep Talk" was okay. I like the drum and bass track, but I'm not really sure if it really fit in here. It's hard enough to understand her without her rapping triple time. You be the judge. Overall, it's a solid album. The album flows well and there are no wack joints, but there's nothing here that seperates her from the pack. I'm not the biased type that throws 5 stars at my favorite artists everytime they put an album out, I try to be unbiased in my reviews and grade them appropriately, so this album gets 3.5 stars in my opinion. You won't be disappointed by it, but it won't blow you away either. My only beef with this album is that it's not longer. It checks in at 25:16 and leaves you wanting to hear more.

Standout Tracks: Special Forces, Commonwealth (Cheap Chicks), and Beautiful Things (my favorite)

WAKE UP AND SAVE YOUR SOUL.......2004-02-02

Bahamadia is it. This album took me to places i didn't think were still possible in hip hop. Between "Philadelphia" and "Beautiful Things", i was sandwiched in Dwele's hypnotic sound. "Cheap Chicks" takes me back to my highschool days, when we knew damn well that everyone was trying to dress up without breaking their pockets. The album has fast tracks, slow tracks, thoughtful tracks, straight up battle rhyme tracks.....in an EP. From beginning to end, its a classic. Her next venture is expected to carry on with the same high quality standards we are so used to. shout to Chops, Hezekiah and the Beat Society Massive.

"Bahamadia is the best female cd. Maybe." - if she isn't then who is? Yeah thats right you have no answer to that question because she is the best. This EP is amazing and the production of DJ Rev makes it even better. For the real fans of Bahamadia, grab her debut album "Kollege"(If you can find it). It is exponentially better than her later work. I'm still waiting for the non-laid back version of Bahamadia to surface(which I heard on her freestyle radio appearances), hopefully with the release of another album/collaboration.

Don't listen to the reviewer below. Yeah, I wanted a longer record too. But I'll take what I can get. Bahamadia is by far the best female MC out there, and it's a crime that she's had such a hard time. This ep is highly experimental, with a little soul and even a little drum and bass thrown into the usual hip hop mix. The production is top notch, her rhymes are tight, what more do you want? Wait for her next full length- I think this is just to tide us over. PS if you like this, check out the new album from Mystic, another female MC, produced by Bahamadia. It's tight.

She's hot!.......2001-08-09

i say "whatever" the the previous reviewer....I think this cd is pretty good. She colaborated with some nice artists and she still has flows...Commonwealth is the bomb and her beats are mellow and deep, way different from all the other music thats being presented today. She kept it real even on this cd! Just really listen to her lyrics. Im glad that she has a certain style that shines out the competition. I just wished that she wasn't "slept' on. Give her a chance..She's truly talented in the art. I was so chilled out while listening to this cd, im not into all that screaming and excessive cursing most artists think that they have to do to sell their cd. Girlfriend got it goin on!

First of all i'd like to compliment Bahamadia for hookin' up with DJ Revolution on this EP. Rev supplied some nice scratches and beats for her tracks. I love Dia's flow and her mellow voice.

Track 1 - "BB Queen's Intro" Rev scratches it up and it comes off prettie nice.

Track 2 - "Special Forces" The beat is lovely and Dia's flow sounds perfect over it though she only spits for about 30seconds. "I neva been kept in suspense like a scene from Scream / legacy like Nasir Jones i'm reppin' for Queens"

Track 3 - "Commonwealth (Cheap Chicks)" Nothing special, if it was omitted from the CD i wouldn't have missed it.

Track 4 - "One-4-Teen (Funky For You)" A party cut with a beat that gets your head noddin'. Lyrically Hamadia brings nothing to the table on this one. Another thumbs down.

Track 5 - Philadelphia No lyrics, just a 150second space filler. It's actually an okay beat, but no real comment is needed.

Track 6 - Beautiful Things This one gets my approval. It doesn't have much replay value, her message is nice and the lyrics are actually interesting. "No wonder Generation X remains emotionless / misinformed and entertained on ignorance by hypocrites"

Track 7 - Pep Talk Bahamadia actually spits fast over this track. And with this refreshing pace change a nice piece is developed. She flows over a fast drum beat which blends nicely with her voice. The hook seems out of place but works out in the overall scheme.

Overall, i didn't feel that there was enuff content in her 25minute EP to keep me interested. You may wanna dub "Special Forces" and maybe one other track, but I wouldn't recommend this CD to potential buyers.
