I am not going to say this album is as good as Bob, but it is powerfully good none the less. Closest thing I have heard to capturing that Wailer sound. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in listening to classic reggae and wants to to stay away from the dance hall stuff.

Culture's lead singer, Joseph Hill is an unassuming, humble and friendly man, who is small in stature. Those who meet him are often unprepared for his tranformation onstage, when he sings with Culture. Somehow, Hill is tranformed into a towering giant, a lion, and avenger for the power of Rastafari when he picks up the microphone to sing. This kind of charisma that of a man who has rasta in his heart. To his credit, Joseph Hill has maintained a steady course, and both his Rastafarian philosophy and the music of Culture has remained with the roots of reggae music, despite over thirty years of strange mutations in Jamaican reggae music. "Harder Than the Rest" is exactly what the title purports it to be.... the hardest and most straight ahead collection of roots reggae when conscious music ruled, and Rastafari was the source of all reggae. Perhaps roots consciousness has fallen from fashion, but jah people will never forget how important Culture was and still is. I love Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" and "Baldhead Bridge" but this CD is truly harder than the rest and proves that reggae music neither began or ended with Bob Marley.

I don't own this album (yet), but whenever I hear it it makes me want to rush out and buy it, only I can't find it anywhere. It's so beautiful all the way through, but "play skillfully" almost brings a tear to my eye. It's lyrical content, melody and harmonies are out-of-this-world. Buy this now.

I like this record. Positive vibes, never that cheesy sound. Good, smooth, slightly wah wah rhythms, with 3 part harmonies that remind me a little of the Abyssinians. This album is full of slow, catchy hooks. Listen to the samples - nuff said.

Of the more than 2,000 CD's in my collection (which cover many genres/musical styles: Punk, Metal, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Soul, and, of course, Reggae music), ranking within my TOP 5 is "The Right Time" by The Mighty Diamonds. Adding to its excellence is the bonus that all 3 members autographed the CD cover booklet during a 2007 visit to the Rock Hall in Cleveland.

...Okay, now that my gloating is over, let's talk about the album.

The album (circa, 1976) is a collection of early Diamonds' singles, so it's a 'hits collection' in a way. The vocal trio (Tabby, Bunny, & Judge) have been described as "velvet razor" reggae, which is to say that the smooth reggae vocal harmonies represent the "velvet" side, while the socio-political, edgy lyrical content proves "razor" sharp.

The Mighty Diamonds are reggae's version of a Soul-music trio: check out "Shame & Pride," "Them Never Love Poor Marcus," and, of course, "Have Mercy."

"I Need A Roof" is another fine example of the "velvet razor" label: "I Need A Roof Over My Head/And Bread On My Table/This Love In My Heart/It's For Everyone" is a line from the tune that is heavy, catchy & soulful all at once. The pure harmony draws the listener in, while, at the same time, provides a strong message. It's this duality that makes "The Right Time" such a complete album.

All ten tracks on this album are memorable reggae classics!! REQUIRED LISTENING (even for the casual reggae fan)!!

*As always, I have to keep hoping that the Mighty Diamonds (or whoever rightfully owns some of their early classic albums) will see the light & release the great Diamonds albums: PLANET EARTH, TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG & LEADERS OF BLACK COUNTRIES. Diehard fans are eagerly awaiting these classics on CD!!!!!





5 out of 5 stars If you like Reggae, this is ESSENTIAL! Some of the best harmonies on CD!.......2006-05-07

I'm a serious Reggae fan and especially love the close harmony groups: the Abysinnians, the Gladiators, the Heptones, etc. However, this CD, hands down, is my favorite, second only to the Congos' "Heart of the Congos." However, where "Congos" is awash in Lee "Scratch" Perry's signature echo and sound effects, "Right Time" is produced very simply, uncluttered, letting the beautiful harmonies take center stage. Of course, the gorgeous singing wouldn't impress half as much if the Mighty Diamonds didn't have good material to perform. Luckily, not only do they have Grade A songs here, every track is a killer. Standouts for me are "Shame & Pride," "Right Time," and "Why Me Black Brother Why?," but, honestly, they're all fantastic. The vocals are angelic, pure bliss, and the riddims are the perfect complements. You cannot go wrong with this one. This is the Diamonds' shining moment; though they would release other good stuff, they never acheived the perfection they achieved on "Right Time." If you like this, also check out stuff from the aforementioned artists, as well as CDs from the Wailing Souls and Culture.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It Just Yet!.......2005-12-01

This album is without doubt top quality reggae, and it pushed the Mighty Diamonds to the top of my harmony favorites. However, the album "Go Seek Your Rights" - issued by the Front Line label, features this entire plus an additional 6 tracks [One Brother Short, Bodyguard, Let the Answer Be Yes, Sweet Lady, Master Plan, Got To Get Away], and is usually found at a surprisingly cheap price! Try to find that one first...

One other CRUCIAL thing to mention: One of the very best Toast albums I have ever heard, produced by the Godfather himself, URoy, is called "Right Time Rockers: The Lost Album". It is very difficult to find, but well worth the effort, as it contains some of the most vintage toast ever recorded. It was recorded in Channel One the same year as "The Right Time" was released (1976), but not released until 1998 by SoundSystem, and features absolutely sensational toasting, perfect engineering (Hookim), as well as The Mighty Diamonds, Tommy McCook, and the Revolutionaries (with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespear). If you're into Toast, or want to check out something truly unique to Reggae, this is one to own.

This album is essential for any roots reggae fan. The Mighty Diamonds are a feast for the ears and classic roots. The cover may throw you off a bit as it did me, but, once you get past the ultra-lame cover, the album is total magic. Very spiritual head-candy.

I love reggae music and it seems that every time i buy a reggae cd my expectations are so high that no matter how good it is I'm a little let down. Until now that is. This album is simply fantastic. It definitely belongs in the same category as classic reggae albums like Marcus Garvey, Satta Massagana, and Heart of the Congoes, and in my opinion it actually eclipses all of them.

A stunner by culture - I saw the cover of the album, maked by a budding female, and checked out the first track 'International Herb'. Brilliant, on the basis of this track I purchased the album and I reckon it to be the best Ive heard yet. A stormer! To anyone who liked Two Sevens Clash, this is better!

This is a seminal album one that transferred well to the punk scene in London and helped influence the Clash the pistols and others. Its pure roots reggae but alittle slicker and shorter- and includes the stunner Soul Rebel. This album is quick and propulsive- with most songs dancing around the 3 minute mark at true Jamaican pace but seems to blow by despite being 11 or 12 tracks. Im not implying that the songs are fast at all- its the spirit and the mixing of the songs down to an almost poplike form instead of six minute mantras. Great vocals great tunes and relevant lyrics make this a must own for all reggae fans especially considering this is a classic among the last dying days of the height of reggae-Bom MArley excluded. The cover captures the mood at the time not only in Kingston but in London as well. A must have!

At times I just laugh at the harmony these guys lay down, at first listen it sounds downright out of key. So you wonder why I would rate it so high? This album is soulfull, sweet reggae at its best, the more you listen the more you groove. You cant help but love it for its sincerity and innocence. HIGH on my list of must haves.

Great album, my only complaint is that it's a little short. Excellent beats, catchy tunes, great vocals... i definitely recommend this one. Even if you haven't heard of the Gladiators before, their sound is right up there with other much more famous reggae bands.

In the late 1980's I purchased The Gladiator's LP "On the Right Track". Big mistake. I did not like this album as I thought it was weak and irritating. The result was that for 10+ years I stayed away from The Gladiators all together. Another big mistake. I finally bought "Trenchtown Mix Up" after reading the review in the Rough Guide, and I have since been kicking myself for ignoring it all this time. Every song is perfect and the musical backing and production by Prince Tony is stunning. A cornerstone reggae album on par with The Congos "Heart of the Congos", Sylford Walker's "Lambsbread" and Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey". A perfect, hard driving, rootsy mix of the heroic and the spiritual.

U-Roy's Dread in Babylon is another in line of classics for the unorthadoxed singer/writer. Even though its a rather old cd, many of its songs are used in soundtracks for recent films. I.e. High Tension, After the Sunset, and City of God. For those of you unfamiliar with his style I caution you before buying this cd. Be prepared for elonggated scats and pseudo-harmonic melodies. The structure of the songs follow the traditional syncapation more familiar with reggae, but he primaraly talks the listener through each vocal journery, never jumping octaves or escalating in pitch. If you're expecting a Bob Marley, Ky-mani, Buju Bantu or I-Wanye sort of musician, this is not the cd for you. If on the other hand you enjoy "live" sounding bands, with improvised melodies, vocals and tunes then you'll defeniately want to buy this cd.

I'm not a reggae expert...though I've been a fan for nearly 30 years (yikes!), but there's one thing I'm sure of: this is not your father's nice, easy-going, Bob Marley-type of reggae.

U-roy is like being sucked into a swirling vortex of trippy acid-induced Rasta fervor. If you suspect that your kid likes to smoke LOTS of pot and is one step away from joining the Taliban (just to be REALLY different), this might not be the best record to have near the Cheese Doodles. But if you want to hear a facinating historical artifact that somehow fuses the peaceful, lilting beat with jarring reverb and other "interesting" production tricks, this just may be the record you've always been looking for.

Imagine Peter Tosh walking along the beach eating a Hershey bar. Now, picture the Strawberry Alarm Clock, same beach, eating peanut butter, and crashing into poor Mr. Tosh. I think you get the idea.

Not too much to add to previous reviews, except that this is arguably the best urban reggae-dub ever recorded. Unlike LKJ's Island output, which leaned too much towards sunny, upbeat lilting rhythms for my taste, this one throbs with menace, raw anger, and the pulse of the concrete jungle. Only one complaint: this reissue CD excludes the "All We Doin' is Defendin'" dub, which appeared on the original Virgin 12" single; a dub that will break your spine.

Listen to the man called Linton Kwesie Johnson, because he's got a lot to say and he is saying it in a hard dubwize style! LKJ doesn't sing, and he doesn't rap, he is a poet from the city of London and he recites his poems over some of the hardest dub riddims ever laid down. The Legendary Dennis "Blackbeard" Bovell and his band is responsible for this monumentum of black music that will thrill you to the bones, I guarantee! This is the sound of the crying sufferer: Hard reality of today comes through your speakers as Linton introduces you to the blackman's suffering in modern day babylon. As heavy as the basslines are LKJ's accusations against the police, government, and the sufferers themselves. Although he is not a Rasta this is a Black Consciousness Reggae Album from the first degree. It is the 2nd track called five night of bleeding that made me hooked on reggae and especially dub. This happened back then in 1981 and this album is still among my favorites! Dread beat and blood is Linton's debut album, I consider it his best. You can find his music in several collections that consist of only essential albums. It is one of the first in the genre that is now know as "dub poetry". Like U Roy is to be considered the godfather of toast, Linton Kwesie Johnson must be credited as the godfather of dub poetry. Dread Beat And Blood: consider this to be your next purchase!

This is the first CD release by Leeb and Peterson under their side project banner of 'Intermix'. Bill Leeb is more synonimous with his partnership with Rhys Fulber in FLA and Delerium. Intermix is the creation from the mind of one talented Bill Leeb who had brought on Chris Peterson who is a well known mixer of industrial and ambient themes. This album was initially released in 1992 by Third Mind Records and being 13 years later this album still is powerful and mind-boggling in execution and sound. This CD is a 8 track album release covering every aspect of industrialized electronica with several songs dwelving into a soft techno beat. What makes this CD so that much better is the inclusion of Fulber in the last three tracks - they feel and sound a tad darker and has a Delerium feel to the songs. This side project was one of the most successful in their careers with Bill Leeb's other side project 'Pro>Tech' being the best.

Bill Leeb is a very prolific fellow with many side projects. Intermix is a very strange one and it does not sound like anything else. It is like they mixed instrumental synth with early techno and some trance and electro music. This is not as good as their Delerium project or FLA but it is still interesting that Leeb has been able to create a very different kind of instrumental music, however he could have used some sampled vocals and it does sound like background music, but being background music it is quite good indeed.

Even though FLA had been around for many years when they made this side project, it sounds original and fresh. One might think this is the first CD these two had ever produced. It is that raw, not-fully-realized sound of this CD that I really like. Skinny Puppy's "Remission" is a good comparison. The burgeoning sound of a new style of music is evident here as it is on "Remission". I recommend early CD's from Skinny Puppy, Meat Beat Manifesto, and Front 242 as good companions to this CD. Further Intermix releases reveal the continued development of this unique sound.

When I first heard this while browsing for CD's I was blown away. I was into industrial music at the time and just beginning to listen to techno. I think this CD along with MBM's 99% began to bridge the gap between techno and industrial at the time. I still listen to it today. It might not be as musically broad as the later releases, but I would encourage anyone interested in Meat Beat Manifesto to give it a try.

Hard industrial with a twist of techno and ambient... what more could you ask for. Similar flow as Phase two with more of a hint of Delerium. Great stuff, I'd recommend getting any and all Intermix albums!

I've always loved the Sonia Pottinger produced Culture albums, this one in particular. There's no filler material here, but Innocent Blood, Poor Jah People, Natty Never Get Weary and Down In Jamaica stand out for me. A lot of Jamaican history is told in this album, and history has never sounded sweeter. You might be moved to shed a tear or two if you listen to this while intoxicated, it's that powerful.

CUMBOLO: I've always said that BALDHEAD BRIDGE is my favourite Culture LP, and I stand by that statement. But CUMBOLO is also my favourite Culture LP - and for good reason. Sonia Pottinger's simple, straight-forward production work succinctly spotlights the trio's fantastic harmony singing - especially on the divine title track, and NATTY NEVER GET WEARY - and offers suitably solid foundation for a handful of exemplary story-in-song offerings, most notably INNOCENT BLOOD and DOWN IN JAMAICA. The roots pressure is firmly applied throughout, culminating in Joseph Hill's impassioned plea for PAY DAY ("Will this pay day be Monday? Will this pay day be Tuesday?...When will this pay day be for these retired slaves?"), and while the subject matter is deadly serious, the overall tone of CUMBOLO is never less than bouyant and upbeat - that's just what makes great reggae music so great!

CUMBOLO is quite widely available thanks to Virgin's recent reggae re-release program. I suggest you don't wait for pay day - go and buy a copy right away.

Listen folks, I am a die-hard advocate of reggae music. Marley, Tosh and Spear are good, but Joseph Hill (Culture) is the toughest. If you are truly inspired by roots reggae and sweet harmonies. Buy this.... You will like every song...... From skankin' to burnin'....it has it all. I have over 300 reggae CD's and this is among my top five favorites..........Peace and Love........

    Well, I haven't received my CD. Firstly the original order failed to arrive at the second was place automatically so I am hoping for the best.

    5 out of 5 stars Thirteen Dubs, Three Toasts; ALL Prince Far I.......2005-11-30

    The 1979 LP "Cry Tuff Encounter Pt. 2 - Prince Far I In Dub," mixed by none other than Prince Jammy, is the cornerstone of "Dubwise." ALL nine tracks from that classic set are here (although two are alternative mixes) along with four more excellent dubs, and three equally exceptional Prince Far I toasts. Cry Tuff 2 has long been hailed as one of the Prince's top dub sets, and not for nothing; menacing killer bass meets rich, deep, tripped-out dub featuring the likes of Sly & Robbie, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Bingy Bunny, Bongo Herman and Santa Davis. Some fine echoing horns come courtesy of Dirty Harry and Don Drummond Jr. (Vin Gordon), and some moody melodica (uncredited) snakes through several tracks. Far I's three toasts; the intensely rhythmic chants of "Throw Away Your Gun" and "Jah Do That," and his hypnotic recitation of "No More War" are easily among his best, and the rhythms are deep, funky, and tuff.

    The only criticisms one could level at this set are the exclusion of two of the original "Cry Tuff" mixes (in favor of alt. versions), and the fact that a few tracks come from the 1980 Prince Far I LP "Showcase In A Suitcase," which we'd really like to hear in its complete form. Another thing is that some of the tunes are misnamed, though a quick trip to princefari.com can help the listener sort this out. On the plus side, we have a few tracks that were previously unreleased and, again, EVERY track is killer. Sound quality is superb, with all the tracks having been digitally remastered from the original tapes. If you like heavy grooves, bad-ass toasts, or mind-bending dubs, this will be one of your favorite recordings. "Dubwise" is a ridiculous bargain - almost a full hour of dense, enveloping sounds, and there's not a weak moment on it. Essential Far I fi true.

    Prince Far I one of the most overlooked and over deserved artists of the twentieth century, put out a great mass of music, his sturdy delivery is one of the most triumphant champion voices of this era. No one compares to the one Far I. Dubwize is yet another album full of great music, however, this album differs because its less of Far I's haunting chants, but more of his jolting dubs. Far I who was also a great producer developed some great dub music to the ites of creation. This album displays just how creative he was, and his dubs are distinctive and trance like. You'll love this one, R.I.P one Far I.
