About the Artist
For Donna De Lory, music was ingrained in her soul literally before her birth in Malibu Canyon, California. Her grandfather played cello and upright bass for the Warner Bros. Studios orchestra, her mother was a singer, and her father was a studio musician and producer for people like the Beach Boys, Phil Spector and Glen Campbell. "It was always really easy for me to know what I wanted to do, because I was always around music, singers and players," recalls De Lory. At age eight, she was hired for her first professional singing job - a Recipe dog food commercial. By age thirteen De Lory had quite a resume, including singing on Disney's most famous ride, "It's a Small World" as well as many other movie and album credits - (Rocky II, Barry Manilow, Santana). When she was fifteen, the family moved to Nashville, where her father got immersed in the country music scene. "I hung out in that scene for a while and made a lot of friends," she continues. "It was there that I picked up a guitar, started writing a little bit, and decided that I really wanted to be an artist and a songwriter."
Moving back to LA to study dancing, singing and acting, De Lory Eventually recorded her own demo and worked with songwriters. It was through these connections that De Lory sang on a demo that was being presented to Madonna. De Lory soon met Madonna's producer at the time, Patrick Leonard, who worked with her for several months and was ultimately instrumental in landing her a breakthrough job as one of Madonna's two singing/dancing stage companions.
De Lory performed on three of Madonna's biggest tours- 1988's "Who's That Girl?," 1990's "Blonde Ambition" and 93's "The Girly Show" as well as taking part in the acclaimed documentary, "Truth or Dare" - and she says she learned many valuable lessons from the pop icon. "The biggest thing I learned from Madonna is that you can pay attention to every detail. You don't have to be this artist that just sings, and then walks away and lets other people take care of things. She took care of everything, from the music to the costumes to the set to all the details. I've never been around anyone who works as hard as she does."
When not on the road with Madonna, De Lory performed with several different bands in the L.A. area, eventually signing with MCA Records as a solo artist and releasing her self-titled debut album in 1992, which spawned a Number One hit in Japan and a Top 10 dance hit in the U.S. But the lure of collaboration drew her back to a group of musicians who she had been working with in L.A., and a recommendation from her drummer at the time led her to the musical partner she was looking for - cellist, Cameron Stone.
De Lory and Stone combined her pop background and influences - ranging from Patsy Cline to the Beatles to Peter Gabriel - with his classical approach and a growing embrace of multicultural rhythms. "At one point, I went to places like Brazil and Israel to promote my solo record," explains De Lory. "And I was getting influenced by a lot of world music. I started studying Asian dance prior to making my first video, which was something really different for me. That put me on a whole new path musically as well."
"We recorded a lot of demos for MCA, but then a lot of weird things started happening at the record company, which, of course, always happens," sighs De Lory. "They didn't really get what I was doing, but they didn't want to let me go, either, so I was in a state of limbo for a couple of years."
Finally parting with MCA, De Lory and Stone built a fully equipped 24-track digital studio in her garage, then promptly packed it up and took it in a U-Haul to a cabin in Taos, New Mexico, where most of the material for the album bliss, was created. Fourteen years, a live CD/DVD, some solo albums, and one tragic suicide after Crowded House's last release comes this highly anticipated reunion. Singer/songwriter Neil Finn and bassist Nick Seymour reunited after the 2005 death of drummer Paul Hester, brought in a new member and two producers (Ethan Johns and Steve Lillywhite) to replace longtime cohort Mitchell Froom, and the impressive result is a logical and overdue addition to the band's previous four albums. Finn's knack for a melodic ballad remains firmly in place as Time on Earth coasts on his dreamy voice and introspective, hook-laden pop choruses. However, this is a more reflective collection that requires a few spins to fully reveal its charms. Finn co-writes "Even a Child" with Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, and that and the frisky "She Called Up" are the most buoyant tracks on this predominantly pensive disc. Finn has generally shaded towards a darker edge and this hour-long set might have benefited from more of the lighter touch he applies to "Transit Lounge," a song enhanced by Beth Rowley's lovely and startling wordless vocals along with jazzy electric piano and even airport sound effects. Strings, sitar, and intricate production add subtle elements that bolster the timeless musical qualities Finn has always reveled in. The ominous, even brooding "Silent House," a co-write with all three Dixie Chicks, is another highlight that sounds like nothing either has done before as it floats along on fuzz guitar and hurdy-gurdy, both courtesy of Johns. Trimming some weaker cuts would have made this a more focused listen, but Time on Earth is a worthy successor to Crowded House's existing catalog--a high compliment indeed. --Hal Horowitz

This album is awesome. but many fans of Crowded House might be dissapointed if they expect to hear the 80's or 90's CH. Every band has to grow musically and CH is no exception. After two solo albums, another Finn Bros. album, and losing the irreplacible Paul Hester, I can understand why man fans were skeptical, if not angry that this reunion happened. but I am very glad that Neil got back with Nick, Mark and the new edition of Matt Sherod (Beck's Drummer), to release a great album full of depth and emotion.
to cite a few songs, "Nobody wants to" is a great start right out the gate. beautiful melody. the 1st single "dont stop now" is a faster paced song that instantly draws you in. it has a feel of the older Crowded House we know and love as does the next song "she called up".
the album gets dark and slower (for the most part), at this point which isnt a bad thing. its just not the happy, poppy CH we're used to. I draw comparison to the song "Edible Flowers" from the Finn brother's "everyone is here" album a few years back.
theres' even some experimentation in "transit lounge". a song that sounds more like a Neil Finn solo project song. (maybe it was before the album officially became a CH album).
all in all, like the many reviews before me the album isnt as easily accesible as its predecesors.its slower, sadder and it doesnt get stuck in your head as easily as "dont dream its over" but its good that way.
Neil has a wisdom that I can only imagine comes with age. he's nearing 50 but the songwriting is like wine; it only gets better.
Ive heard rumours that another CH album is already in the works for '08-
09. I cant wait already!
I am glad that in a world of mediocrity and record-company pushed crap this band came back against the odds to give us music with A MEANING....

Who is Crowded House?.......2007-07-28
Okay, time to ruffle some feathers. When it comes down to it, the core of Crowded House is Neil Finn. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie are all that's necessary to call them Fleetwood Mac, Robert Smith is the Cure and Karl Wallinger, World Party.
That being said, how palpable is Paul Hester's absence here? Very much so. Part of that is due to that other drummer guy deigning to take his place (Matt Sherod, who does an excellent job of playing originally without being conspicuously NOT Paul Hester and who should understand that my sarcasm is aimed at detractors and not at him), but it's mostly due to the lyrical content. A good deal of this album is about the grief and guilt around Hester's suicide, with not at all subtle, wounds open and pass me the salt lyrics.
So in defense of this as a Crowded House album: their last studio album added a guitarist who was just accepted into the fold by the band and by the fans: Mark Hart. Who scoffed? Who questioned Together Alone's legitimacy as a CH album? Not many.
Neil Finn is the heart of the band, but those who surround him give a place to pump blood. Split Enz was one thing, Crowded House another, his solo work, something totally different, Finn Brothers a collaboration with an equally brilliant brother. All of that comes through here. All of those influence this work.
In the end though, this DOES sound like a Crowded House album in the way that they all do, even when they don't sound that much like each other. Compare Woodface to Together Alone, or any other CH to another. This is a new CH, with the same power, the same spirit, the same core, and yet something different.
Sorry if this review is rambling, but after a week of straight listening, I have to say that this is the most exciting album I've heard in a long time and I'm jazzed. Neil Finn is a genius who surrounds himself with geniuses. Buy. This. Album. Now.
Something is missing.......2007-07-26
I say this as one of the biggest Crowdies in the world. I have been a huge fan of every Finn project from the start, but something is missing from this album. To me this is not Crowded House. I will give it 5 stars as an amazing Neil Finn and Friends album, but not CH. I relate my experience listening to this album as I did Warren Zevon's The Wind. The musicianship is still there. Neil's lyrics are as poignant and haunting as ever, but the fun is gone. The magic that was Neil Finn, Nick Seymour, and Paul Hester is sadly missing.
I think this is a fitting tribute to Paul and I understand the reasons for reforming Crowded House, but Paul's absence is palpable. With all that being said, this is a beautiful and haunting album that every CH and Finn fan should own. You won't be disappointed with the album at all. I want to make that clear. You will, however, feel a sense of loss I think. This is as cathartic an album as you will find in some ways. Buy it, enjoy it, love it, but remember the good ol' times in your heart.
I respect your wishes Paul, but we miss you.

After the success of From Under the Cork Tree, Fall Out Boy earned the right to indulge their whims. Fortunately, their instincts tend to serve them well (not counting those infamous cell-phone photos). On their most adventurous album, Def Jam prez Jay-Z introduces "Thriller," while Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds produces groove-heavy hit "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" and "Thnks fr th Mmrs." A few new flourishes aside, however, like guitarist Joe Trohman's Metallica moves on "Thriller," the Chicago-bred band remains true to their punk-pop roots, even if vocalist Patrick Stump sounds like Mr. Sexyback on "This Ain't a Scene" and "I'm like a Lawyer with the Way I'm Always Trying to Get You Off (Me + You)." You can thank bass player/songwriter Pete Wentz for the unwieldy song titles. As he explains in "Fame
< Infamy," "I am God's gift / Why would he bless me with such wit without a conscience." Whether spicing up their recipe with R&B swagger or playing it straight, FOB are at their best when they crank up the volume. Hence, the piano-based "Golden" is the weakest track on an otherwise solid outing. Hey, maybe they just wanted to see what a stadium looks like bathed in the glow of a thousand lighters. Taking its title from a letter Vincent Van Gogh sent to his brother Theo ("Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high"), Fall Out Boy's fourth seems likely to follow its predecessor into the platinum stratosphere. --Kathleen C. the most overhyped album of the century next to chumbawumba and the titanic soundtrack. no creativity here and the music just plain is horrible, nonsense takes on a new meaning with these posers. Almost as bad as system of a down but dummer than justin timberlake. do not waste your money and if you want talent look elsewhere. hard to believe people even buy this junk.
To Infinity and Beyond.......2007-07-10
The follow-up to Fall Out Boy's breakout "From Under the Cork Tree" finds them infused with a new-found confidence and an arena rock cockiness. Fortunately for them, they manage to aim for the Stadium Nose-Bleed seats and succeed. From the opening braggadocio of their label Prez Jay-Z to the funky beats that undercoat "I'm Like A Lawyer..." (produced by none other than Babyface Edmonds) to quoting Leonard Cohen in "Hum Hallelujah," Pete Wentz shows he and his mates have no intention of playing it passive.
They also come up with hooks a-plenty. The slapping drum and bass that kicks "The Take Over The Breaks Over" is irresistible. The hit "This Ain't A Scene It's An Arms Race" will have you football cheering and stamping your feet in no time flat. There are so many memorable moments on this CD that pointing them out is beyond the point...they just craft themselves elegantly into each song. The Choir in "You're Breaking But You're No Wave" is probably my personal favorite.
Be that as it may, there are times when the band teeters close to smart-aleky. Especially the unwieldy song titles and frequent self-referencing. There is a touch of the clever-clever here that makes me wonder if the band can transcend "being poster boys for the scene" (as they sing in "Thriller") in the way My Chemical Romance did on "The Black Parade." But for the 14 catchy rocking tunes on "Infinity On High," Fall Out Boy show that they are hungry for more.
Besides, any band that can work both The Simpsons and Vincent VanGogh into their overall view is OK by me.

Just buy the singles that you like on the radio. This album is crap. I dont know why they put JayZ in there and most of the critical reviews on amazon pretty much summed it up. I really believe some people are frocing themselves to like this album.

What can I say? I love this album to death! I've been a FOB fan since early 2005. Now that's not reeeeally a long time, since that's when they kinda started to get noticed. I wish I was there from the start, but personally, if you didn't live in the Greater Chicago area, I think maybe that would have been a bit hard. (Hey. I might be TOTALLY wrong).
Anyway. Great hooks, Great melodies, Great lyrics (which don't really have a "plot" or "story" to 'em, but hey who cares!). One million out of ten. And will ALWAYS be in my top 3 albums ever.

More personal selections include "Ghost," "Arms Around Your Love" and "She'll Never Be Your Man" and alt-rock experimentations ("Killing Birds" the anthemic "Silence the Voices"). Carry On also includes the Top 10 European smash hit "You Know My Name," the main title song for the current James Bond theatrical release, Casino Royale, appearing for the first time on a full-length release. Cornell wrote and recorded the track with long-time James Bond composer David Arnold for the film.
With this collection of songs, it is evident that Cornell was inspired by songwriters from Elvis Costello to Tom Waits. Cornell says that his own lyrical approach leans on stream-of-consciousness, "getting out of my own way" to allow themes to naturally arise, whether topical or biographical. "The most exciting thing is to let yourself expose your true, vulnerable feelings, which is what resonates with people most," he explains. As far as his vocal style, he points to such R&B singers as Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin for showing masterfully how emotion can best be conveyed, even in subtle phrasing, also praising Bob Marley's expressive range and Tom Waits' use of his voice as an instrument.

I love the sound of Chris Cornell's voice. If you are expecting this CD to sound like his Sound Garden or AudioSlave stuff, you won't necessarily like this. If you are die hard Chris Cornell fan, this is good stuff.

Don't buy this cd expecting the normal temple of the dogs, sound garden or audio slave style of chris. He has taken a new direction, and although i am sure the music is well written and the lyrics are par, its not my kind of music. There is about three good songs and the rest I could push the skip button for. He does a cover of Billy Jean that I just didn't enjoy although live was much better. If your hard core chris fan, you'll probably want this cd but otherwise I would just burn it from your friend.
Call Me a Dog.......2007-07-21
My favorite song from Temple of the Dog was "Call me a Dog" and this album reminds me of that same song. All the tracks are not hard rock but instead are little more relaxed. If you like easy listening with a blues type of feel to it then you should get this. I was not disappointed with this album.
This Album is Deep!.......2007-07-21
Chris Cornell has done it again! Amazing Sophmore album,, Not only you have "You Know My Name" from the movie Casino Royale, you also get a great cover of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" which proves how powerful and deep his talent is. "Arms Around Your Love" "Scar on the Sky" "Finally Forever" "Ghost" and all of the songs an this album are incredible, this album is a must have! Im telling you after listening to the album you just want to listen to it again, because its that damn good!! Chris Cornell will forever be the best male vocalist on my list :) So pick it up, buy it now, relax and Enjoy!!!

This album appears in the footsteps of 2004's The Girl in the Other Room but doesn't sound like a follow-up. Whereas The Girl saw the pianist-singer abandon the Great American Songbook for more personal pastures, From This Moment On sees her working out on standards done in traditional arrangements. Although the tracks here are by the likes of Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn, and the Gershwins, Krall sounds more at ease than ever before; perhaps digging deep inside on The Girl loosened her up. Backed by the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on seven tracks, Krall sings off the big band with ease. On the title track, she keeps up with a galloping bass and explosive brass arrangements and even ventures into scatting toward the end of the song. Her voice has also acquired a wonderfully worn texture in the past few years, and it works wonders on the ballads (just listen to "Isn't This a Lovely Day" and "Little Girl Blue" for instance). In songs, mood, and delivery, From This Moment On reveals Krall's personal ardor for that golden era of song-making, when Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and (especially) Nat "King" Cole were in their prime. It's musical territory that Krall has often explored, but this album was certainly not a case of simply repeating past formulas: Krall's A-team of support--producer Tommy LiPuma, engineer Al Schmitt, and arranger/bandleader John Clayton--were on hand to ensure that inspiration was kept on an edge, unhindered by the studio environment.

I listened Diana Krall live in concert tonight. I did not know much about her except that she is regarded as one of the greatest jazz artists of our generation which made me feel rather ignorant as I am a big fan of jazz. She played for an hour and a half tonight and she is obviously a talented musician. However, one thing struck me as odd ... for one of the shining lights of modern jazz, she sang one, ONE, original song. All of the music she played were covers of some of the greatest jazz music ever recorded. What became evident is that this talented woman bears a talent that is only skin deep. The one original song that she sang was horrendous, a lyrical disaster. I cringed each and every time the refrain was repeated. Granted the crowd, purveyors of insipid music one and all, ate it up. Her own music can't all be that bad can it? I walked away with the thought that music, as in fine arts, has simply become a playground for lazy artists to appeal to lazy fans who don't expect any more than rote regurgitation. Diana Krall is a cover artist. What galls me about her fame and fortune is that talent alone didn't make her famous. Is it because she's an attractive woman who can tickle the keys of a piano and sing in a sultry voice? There are multitudes of rock cover bands who get ridiculed for playing songs they didn't write. So, why does this woman get lauded for doing the same thing? Talented yes, but genius? ... to compare her to Cole Porter or Nat King Cole would be sinful.

Diana has one of the greatest voices in the jazz biz. She plays a great piano, sings as a song bird, and is truly a marvelous performer.

From This Moment On~ Diana Krall is easy listening jazz at its best. Ms Kralls vocal skills are remarkable and she sings these traditional jazz tunes with conviction and fortitude of a grandmaster of jazz. The book-let is beautifull if a bit sparse. The photographs are simply put it amazing and she looks stunning. The production value is right on the money and I like it since it so easy to listen to even for jazz beginners such as myself. Highly recommended indeed and I easily give this album 5 out of 5 stars.

Pink Martini should be known as the little orchestra that walks a fine line in its music. Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brazilian marching street band and Japanese film noir is the 12-piece Pink Martini.
Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland, Oregon-based "little orchestra" was originally created in 1994 by Harvard-graduate Thomas M. Lauderdale to play at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as public broadcasting, clean water, libraries, civil rights and affordable housing. In the years following, Pink Martini has gone on to perform its multilingual repertoire on concert stages, in smoky clubs and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Greece, Turkey, Taiwan, Lebanon and the U.S.
Hang On Little Tomato, Pink Martini's much-anticipated second album, features a collection of original songs written by the band and its extended family as well as a few undiscovered gems reinterpreted in high style. Drawing on themes articulated on Sympathique, Hang On Little Tomato is the result of the group's diverse collaborations and inspirations. From an advertisement for Hunt's Ketchup in a 1964 issue of Life magazine to a dance sequence in the 1950 Italian film Anna, Hang On Little Tomato includes songs in French, Italian, Japanese, Croatian, Spanish and English. "Una Notte a Napoli," for example, was written with Alba Clemente - an Italian stage and television star in the 1970s - and DJ Johnny Dynell of the legendary New York-based nightclub Jackie 60. In a reworking of the Japanese song "Kikuchiyo To Mohshimasu," Pink Martini collaborated with Hiroshi Wada, the slide guitarist whose group originally recorded and released the song in 40 years ago.

This cd never left the changer since it was released. It's a wonderful mix of styles. (Many here explain the mix of jazz & world styles better than I do) Also it's really got a positive vibe so I could play it with the kiddos in the car (& they loved it) or at a dinner party. I like it because the music is so well done & there's such humor and respect for each style. Pink is a remarkable band. I've given out copies to friends & they are all suprised how great this music is. It's not often you can say a cd is fun, well done & worth a long time in the changer without being boring. Pink Martini is a spectacular band. I've come to love all 3 of their cd's which vary with each incarnation. I love bands who aren't trying to do the same thing each time.

What a beautiful collection of songs! This album features a cover of one of my favorite songs from the Cinema Paradiso soundtrack (also from the movie Anna) - I was thrilled that the group paid tribute to this fun song!
I enjoy listening to this recording with my kids. They particularly like the title track and Clementine - two beautiful and gentle songs.
It's a great record and fun to dance to!

Quirky but Nice.......2007-06-27
So...I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Hang on Little Tomato, as I had heard an excerpt from another album on Public Radio, the one where China sings Que Sera with carnival music in the background. That piqued my interest. I did listen to the samples before I ordered it, but couldn't really tell much. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least. I am a classical music fan and have spent many years singing choral music in a number of languages so the songs sung in French and Italian to a Latin rhythm were intriguing. I also liked their "big band" styling. There was only one song on the album that I didn't like, and considering that they wrote most of the music, that's a pretty significant average for me.
The World is Flat... and Pink.......2007-04-29
Seamlessly crossing genres and generations and geographies, Pink Martini's second album is stellar, erudite, and delightful. It is perhaps a wee bit less dazzling than their first (Sympathique), but far above and beyond most of today's music. I've waited a few years to write my review on this one, but since the third album is being released in May 2007, I thought I'd better get moving.
Pink Martini is a group of 15 musicians, occasionally augmented by additional strings. There is one musician from the first album missing: Pepe Raphael, who was a vocalist as well as songwriter. His departure may explain why "Hang On Little Tomato" is a bit less "edgy" than the first album. (You can hear Pepe on the album "Latenight Betty" by Pepe and the Bottle Blondes, which is quite good but at times a bit too camp/kitschy.)
Every song on "Hang On Little Tomato" is a work of art. In the opening of the first cut, a sea of strings sweeps you into a Cuban nightclub, and China Forbes, Pink Martini's leading lady, draws you in with her sultry vocal delivery. She caresses the lyrics "I know a falling star can't fall forever, but let's never stop falling in love." As the song builds, each talented musician in the group adds to the charm; the keyboard, the trumpets, the percussion: perfection. In addition to providing luscious vocals, China Forbes shares songwriting credit for this along with Thomas M. Lauderdale, the group's pianist.
The second cut, "Anna (el negro zumbon)," continues the Latin flavor, featuring a duet with China and Timothy Nishimo (the group's replacement for Pepe, I suppose, as Timothy was not on the first album). This is one of those songs that forces you to move to the beat; quite fun. Superb percussion, including Heinz the barking dog!
The title cut, "Hang On Little Tomato," features a marvelously mellow clarinet prelude, and a boop-boop-be-doop vocal by China Forbes. Sheer delight. Next comes "The Gardens of Sampson and Beasley," another original work that uses strings and harp to mold a mellow charm, and features a bit of "My Darling Clementine" woven in. The garden referenced is Bella Madrona in Sherwood, Oregon, owned by Jim Sampson and Geoff Beasley.
Continuing the mellow mood, Pink Martini next returns to film noir land, offering a sparse, nostalgic "Veronique," with chilling vocals and trumpet performed by Robert Taylor. French is next, with "Dansez-Vous." I originally thought this was the weakest cut on the album, but after seeing them perform this number live, I have a different opinion. In concert, an extended version of this song is a showcase for the multitude of musical talent that resides in the people of Pink Martini.
With "Lilly," the Latin groove returns, and two trumpets dance with staccato piano and piquant percussion. We quickly jump back to French, with a spare, haunting, wistful, "Autrefois." I love this song! It starts out with a funky drumbeat, which quickly is joined by nostalgic piano chords and a soul-searing violin. What a delightful juxtaposition--the modern percussion and the classic violin, piano, and mandolin. And the longing lyrics tell a tale of fond memories "a good long time ago." The soul capture continues on the next cut, U Plavu Zoru. Patsy Chang's opening cello is unbelievable (see this number in concert for a true soul-shaking experience!). The lyrics of this original song are in Croatian. Why? Why not? Music is the communication form that still delights even if one can't understand the words. "U Plavu Zoru" highlights the outstanding musicianship of each individual member, and the talent of the team, as they take us on a symphonic, operatic journey featuring strings, brass, keyboard, and China's gorgeous voice.
The next cut, "Clementine," brings back memories of the sixties. This song channels Burt Bacharach, or perhaps Herb Alpert, and trombone aficionados will be very pleased. The mid-twentieth century tribute continues with "Una Notte a Napoli." This song could have been used instead of "Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano" in that Italian nightclub scene in "The Talented Mr. Ripley."
In a very Pink Martini move, the next song jumps to Japan, and a Japanese pop song from the sixties. For its cover of this song, Pink Martini enlisted Hiroshi Wada to recreate his slide guitar from the original. This music embodies all the mystery and distinction of Japanese culture, and through simplicity creates great beauty. To continue the "beauty through simplicity" theme, the next number, "Aspettami (Wait for Me)," features only the voice of China Forbes and the guitar of Dan Faehnle, blending to create soothing charm.
And finally, a bit of bit of Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos: Song of the Black Swan. This lush instrumental track carries us, blissfully, to the conclusion of Pink Martini's magical musical world tour. I wish politicians could bring harmony across cultures as well as these musicians.
All but three of the album cuts were written by members of the group, which is the inverse of the case on their first album. I believe you will enjoy and never tire of this CD. If you have the chance to see Pink Martini in concert, run, don't walk. I'll see them again in two months. And remember the new one arriving in May 2007!

Aha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers' conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll's zenith. There's hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--"My Party," "Camaro," and the sarcastic "Charmer"--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings' blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band's approach heard, in several of the record's 13 songs. Reverb guitar and vocals and a "woo woo" chorus add a sinister aspect to "Trunk," and "Knocked Up" features a laissez-faire Caleb Followill crooning "She don't care what her mama said/She's gonna have my baby." The seven-minute revelation of fatherhood that opens the album leads into the U2-influenced "McFearless," a reggae-splashed "Ragoo," and the rambling English blues of "Black Thumbnail." not that my opinion really registers for anything, but i happen to think that this was a fantastic cd. to me, the extended period between their last cd seemed perpetual and when this cd was finally released, i was not disappointed. though i do like 'ahashake heartbreak' better, i still say that this cd is far from overrated. true its not part ll of the last cd but at least they took a different approach. too many bands produce so many identical records. change can be good. [can, but not always. however in this case it is.] i recommend this cd.

I thought Youth and Young Manhood was excellent, thought Aha Shake Heartbreak wasn't that good and therefore wasn't gonna pick up Because of the Times. But my husband had read good reviews and purchased it. Wow! What a coup/comeback for the Followill boys! I think this is their best so far; a very strong disc. I don't think there is a dud song on the whole album. I almost blew out the speakers in my car cranking up Black Thumbnail and My Party over and over and over. Moody, diverse, rockin' - love it! Buy it, you will not be sorry you did.
Disappointing comeback.......2007-07-07
Maybe it's just me, but I haven't been able to get into this. I loved their first album, thought their second one was okay, but this one may be worse than the last one. I can't really give too thorough of a review since I didn't get past the fourth song on the first listen, and haven't listened to it since, even seriously considered trading it in.
I got this CD after reading a stellar review by Q Magazine appauding it. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
Best Alternative/Indie/Rock Album This Year.......2007-07-05
If you're reading this review, you probably know to some extent who the Kings of Leon are - a relatively young indie-rock band out of Tennessee whose appeal is said to come from equal parts youthful energy and wisdom-beyond-their-years.
Their debut was a southern-fried scramble of distorted guitars and yelping vocals that seemed to delight in its own unholiness. On Because of the Times, the guitars are still distorted, the singer's still yelping and the themes aren't necessarily wholesome - see 'Knocked Up', in which singer Caleb belts "She don't care what her mama says, no she's gonna have my baby" - but at times there's a beauty to the arrangements that's almost divine.
That's not to suggest that the band has forgotten to rock, though, because they haven't; in fact, at this point in their career the band has the musicianship to back up their ambition, and the result is some of the most fulfilling rock you can hear on the indie scene today.
If you like either of KoL's previous two albums, you'll love this one. If you're looking for an introduction to the Kings of Leon's work, this is as good a starting point as any.

I was really disappointed in this CD. I was expecting a toned-down version of real classical music, but it sounds really fake and tinkley and weird. Not soothing at all.

I have these DVD's and I can tell you that they will not be a huge part of my baby's development. I received them as a gift from someone that thinks that all you need to do is plunk your child in front of a TV all day without giving the baby any attention. You can see why these DVD's are popular at Day Care Centers or what I like to call, "Concentration camps for baby's with lazy parents", because they know that they can sit their kid/baby in front of the TV and let them turn into a thoughtless zombie while they listen to Baby Einstein totally ruin classics by Bach and DeBussy by playing the music with very cheap midi keyboards. I can get better quality music by whistling Dixie with a mouth-full of saltine crackers.
Also, it has been proven that classical music has nothing to do with the cognitive development of young people. Now, teach them how to play piano or violin and you have yourself an actual YOUNG EINSTEIN, but listening to this kind of music does nothing for the development of the brain. It is just for lazy parents that can't sit down with their kids and play with them or read them a book.

its a good product with very fine music and my toddler realizes that it is sleep time, if I play it. he goes to bed and sleeps after a couple songs. I have trouble in some songs are some months.. dont know why.
Kid's Music.......2007-06-08
I bought this CD for my grandniece, but after listening to it, I determined that no one would ever play this for her except me. I would have kept it for myself but I have the grown-up versions of each of the classical masterpieces on this CD. So, I ended up returning it for a full refund. If you want your kids to be exposed to classicl music, it's a great buy. But if you don't think they will get to listen to it, don't waste your time.
Baby Einstein: Lullaby Classics

These synthesizer versions of classical songs get really old, really fast. Worse yet, the songs are sometimes not soothing at all, especially the very first song. The song seems to get particularly loud and uptempo, which is precisely what you don't expect in a lullaby. Please listen to the sample of the first song at least before you buy.

Jack Johnson has found himself a groove. Indeed, the Hawaiian surfing champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his sophomore release. Fans of Brushfire Fairytales should be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These," the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy." On the splendid "Taylor," Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan. And "By The Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful. -- Bill Holdship

This guy is way overhyped, songwriting is whiny and lacks any facts or knowledge. Guitar playing is really childish skittishes that do not really portray any talent past knowing 3 chords. Tries to act like he is some voice that represents youth but fails miserably. I added this CD to my list of things I wipe with. If you really want to hear an acoustical session that proves this guy sux, there are some others out there. Marketing is the key in todays music world instead of talent and that is why this guy sells records. The lyrics suk, he is just crying and whining from visuals he gets from NPR or something, and that alone is enough to put someone to sleep. Boring, bad and will not be heard of in twenty years. I wish the next Hendrix or Neil Young would please stand up because the posers in here right now annoy me.

Considering I first heard this DVD sitting in my dentist's chair having a tooth extracted, you wouldn't believe it's effect. It certainly helped take my mind off the immediate situation. Beautiful music, soothing mellow voice and a delight to hear at any time.

A great, laid-back, very mellow CD that can put you right on the beach,with a drink in your hand, watching the waves roll in.... even if you are sitting in your office in front of your computer. A must have if you love acoustic guitars! I HIGHLY recommend it!

I love Jack Johnson! I have a more recent album and thought nothing could top it, but this one does. The lyrics are thoughtful, the melodies are catchy. I drove up and down the coast listening to this CD and never got sick of it.

This record is one of his best... I would recommend it for new listeners of Jack Johnson who are just beginning to explore his musical awesomeness.

Fans of Rickie Lee Jones and Jesus Christ can decide whether this devotional music is rapturously spiritual or deliriously strange. It sounds like nothing Jones has previously released, or anything characterizable as contemporary Christian. Instead, her voice soars and wobbles through repetitive, stream-of-consciousness incantations over rhythmic throbs and pulses. On "Where I Like It Best," Jones testifies to the power of private prayer (while seeming to cast churchgoers as hypocrites). The feral distortions of "Tried to Be a Man" recall some of the textures (if not the themes) of her former boyfriend Tom Waits, while the acoustic setting of "Donkey Ride" features guitar tunings that might make Sonic Youth wince and "Elvis Cadillac" conjures a singular vision of heaven. At close to eight and a half minutes, the closing "I Was There" seems to follow Van Morrison into the mystic. Some of this music is oddly affecting; much of it is merely odd. --Don McLeese

interesting idea falls short.......2007-06-27
I felt the "Sermon" was a great idea.. the Gospel according to Rickie Lee. The lyrics are compelling and filled with that wonderful poignant, poetic Rickie Lee touch, but the music seemed like an afterthought. It just didn't interest me very much, and did not stay with me. the DVD was so boring, I couldn't get through the whole thing.
Maybe that was her idea, to just set a story to music, but I much prefer her other albums with songs that are memorable and singable.

I have been listening to this album since January and I must say I am as entranced by it now as I was on the first listen. This album is raw, passionate, thought-provoking and inspiring- like great music should be.
I am not religious or spiritual but this album speaks to me like no other release this year.
Rickie Lee Jones fans should love it and I only hope that people not previously exposed to this extraordinary musician will take a chance on this CD. You will not be disappointed.
spellbinding.......2007-05-23
If the number of plays on my iPod is a sign, this is my favorite RLJ CD in many years. I've bought and liked everything she's put out, but this one...well, it's not the type of CD you can immediately and easily figure out. It's musically and lyrically different than anything she's done in the past. But it's the type of CD that compels you to play it often to investigate the mystery. It draws you in. I keep going back to it. It reminds me of David Bowie's Low or Neil Young or Lou Reed, a complex work done out of the comfort zone, not done with great commercial expectations that turns out to be a mighty work of art. I really can't explain much about it lyrically and don't know exactly what she's aiming for, but I am thrilled and moved trying to figure it out. Also, the computer sound files are of great quality that puts iTunes to shame.
Donkey Ride.......2007-05-19
When this CD was released, I ran out & bought it as soon as it hit the store shelves in our town. I read a glowing review that told me Rickie Lee was exploring spiritual themes on a very different disc. I opted for the DVD 2-disc version. First, I watched the DVD. I think this DVD would be good for musicians looking to see how a seasoned veteran works in the studio. We see Rickie in very informal attire looking like a working musician. It's not particularly entertaining, however. Perhaps watching her in concert performing this set would have had more polish. It is neat to see Rickie in her home office where she obviously works, but the song takes are not entrancing. The material on the disc has grown on me. I think I would describe the material more as "religious" rather than "spiritual." There isn't a lot here about values or lessons. This is more like a Jesus biography. On one of the more accessible tracks, "Elvis Cadillac," Rickie Lee free associates with her strumming putting a smile on your face, "Standing in the doorway, I'm happy living here. Everyone tries so hard to sing a song no one can hear." "Circle in the Sand" is probably the best song that stands alone on its own with its driving beat and Rickie's expressive vocals, "When an angel picked me up, she called my name; There is charity, but says power, money & fame." Much of the rest of the disc is enjoyable, but rather formless. "It Hurts" & "Donkey Ride" do hurt to listen to. While I enjoy Rickie Lee's thematic exploration, the music just doesn't work very well. Rickie Lee is a terrific singer. I'm glad to have this chapter of her work, but it won't be the one that goes into the changer frequently. The DVD may never be seen again. Taxi.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.
