"A fusion of Tigerbeat6's pop destruction and 2ManyDJs' mainstream mash-ups." -URB
"Girl Talk...accelerates beats, distorts textures, pitches up flow, and sets up strange juxtapositions to render absurd the sexed-up aura of hip-hop and dance pop." - CLEVELAND SCENE
"In a time when kids can barely sit through an entire album by just one artist, this A.D.D. mix will keep them sedated and/or spastic." - XLR8R
Girl Talk (a.k.a. Gregg Gillis) is back with his third album on Illegal Art! With each release getting closer to his notorious semi-naked live show, Night Ripper is focused less on beat-fuckery and more on bringing heat to the party. It bangs as a continuous mix packed with wildly disparate Top 40 genres and eras. Current hip-hop hits, soft rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers and rock anthems are all layered and pieced together into one nonstop celebration of pop and excess declared "a plunderphonics party record" by Mark Hosler of Negativland.
Girl Talk tours regularly and actively participates and collaborates with other "on the verge" Midwest and East Coast artists such as Grand Buffet (Fighting), Drop the Lime (Tigerbeat6), Chris Glover (Interscope) and Hearts of Darknesses (Schematic/Asphodel).

Pop culture lesson........2007-07-05
Night Ripper is a dance album both unlike any other and just like every other. That is why it is so good. It reminds me of what Warhol did with consumer goods and pop icons. Night Ripper is Pop Art at its best.
AMAZING.......2007-01-14
Gregg Gillis dazzles with his rythmic genuis and starts the party that you won't want to end.
Very Different, but Good!.......2007-01-09
This is one of the more different DJ mixes that I have ever heard. The only down side to this CD is that most of the tracks leave you wanting more. Track 5 is so good, that it was worth buying the CD, it is a mix with Notorious BIG and Elton John, it will blow your mind.
it's a good one..........2006-08-30
It's not as good as the ones from 2ManyDjs but it's real close. The same idea is going on here though and it does have it's moments. The only reason I give the nod to 2manydjs is because their mashes and mixes had purpose behind them. The obvious example is mixing Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 with Destiny's Child's Independant Woman.
The mixes here work because of timing, pitch, and kitsch. The only other complaint I have would be that's it packed (imo) with too much rap.
With all that said, I haven't sat still since its been in the player. Very well worth the money to own.
Sounds of the Last 3 Decades.......2006-08-10
I love those late night infomercials for CD packages from Time-Life, you know like "sounds of the seventies" or "AM Gold." I love those infomercials because I don't have to sit through the entire song, I just hear the best parts and it gives me a memory from my childhood. This CD takes that idea a bit further. Not only do I get snippets of songs from the 70s, but there are songs included that were popular last month. All of it is swirled together and it don't stop. I've been facinated with "mash-ups" for quite a while, but this fills all of my want to hear any others. The pace of this disc keeps my attention the whole time. I have been listening to it so much I am a little afraid I'm going to memorize it and it will become predictable. There are some highlights: Notorious B.I.G. mixed with "Tiny Dancer," and my favorite, 2 LIVE Crew "We want some P****" playing over Pavement and Paul McCartney "Silly Love Songs." I love hearing Neutral Milk Hotel counting off at some point. I love hearing Ciara mixed in. M.I.A. sounds great in there at some point too. I don't know who does the song "Kryptonite," but on here it's great. I really hope to hear more from GIRL TALK and I hope it doesn't get popular enough to get pulled, maybe I shouldn't even be writing a review. Maybe I should give it a crappy review, but it rocks!

Customer Reviews:
Botched Engineering.......2007-08-02
As is typically on some reissues of great music, the final product is botched at the last minute. The music itself on Moving Targets is enough to earn five stars, and if you can put up the little glitches, than this is still worth the money for the updated sound.
On Illegal, Immoral, a couple of fine studio tracks kick off what is essentially a live, slightly comedic album. Some funny stuff, along with some fine music. Some of the content is enough to warrant an "Adult Advisory" sticker.
Moving Targets is simply a masterpiece. A classic album in every since, and a must have for any 70s collector. The remastered sound is bright and clear, and really brings the music alive.
Now for the bad. A number of cuts on Moving Targets end abruptly before the fade out, and on I,I&F, while some of the songs are supposed to segue into the next (because they are live), the engineer has added an annoying 2 second gap which breaks the track in mid stride. It boggles my mind how an engineer can spend weeks or months carefully remastering a classic piece of musically history, and then not spend just one more hour giving it a final listen before releasing it. Is quality control that dead?

Customer Reviews:
Feel..........2007-02-23
...the noise. I hope Greg comes out with another just like it only more songs. Bring on the mix (Night Ripper), bring on the glitch (Unstoppable), and bring on the noise (Secret Diary)! He does it all...SO SO SO SO well!
Before They Were Famous..........2007-02-15
Like the other reviewers before me, I will preface this by saying that I LOVE the Night Ripper album. It's a brilliantly calculated album of near perfect mash-ups. And one of the best albums of 2006.
Unstoppable, the previous album, is not as strong, but you can tell he was improving his craft, working his way up to the brilliance of Night Ripper. At least those songs sound like mash-ups in the traditional sense.
But Secret Diary, his first album, is just a mess. These "songs" are nowhere near as fluid & coherent as his later albums. Instead it sounds like your CD player is skipping. (As one reviewer pointed out, I too had to check to make sure the disc wasn't damaged!) Either that, or it brings to mind the sound your radio makes as you quickly scroll across the dial, catching split-second snippets of songs. I'd be hard-pressed to call it music. And it's certainly nothing you can dance to! One track, "Time To Get Glamorous," doesn't even use songs, but rather sound effects & such!
This album is more a meditation on noise experimentation if nothing else. It's the CD equivalent to record scratching. And it's not enjoyable. Skip this & instead go for Night Ripper & Unstoppable.
Is this serious?.......2007-02-14
I will be the first to say that Girl Talk's "Night Ripper" is simply incredible, and it never seizes to amaze me everytime I listen to it, which is approaching the thousands.
This obsession led to a understandable Girl Talk high, prompting me to order this album.
To be honest, I spent the first hour of owning it testing the CD in every disc playing device I owned, making sure that my ears weren't deceiving me. I was convinced the disc was severely scratched or damaged. However, I was completely wrong. The tracks are supposed to be like that.
One of the most annoying things I can think of is a cd skipping, killing a mood. This entire album is intentionally like that, and it's repulsing.
Purchase Night Ripper, which is nearly perfect, but under no circumstances purchase this album.
I wonder what could have been..........2006-09-26
This is damn near unlistenable. It won't ever be played again. It's like they took what might have been a good mix/mash and destroyed it on purpose by sending through some assinine chain of effects boxes. There's so much distortion and bit-rate manipulation that you can't tell what's going on underneath. And that's the problem, you can't hear the music. Art is art, whatever, but this just isn't fun to listen to. It's not thoughtful, playful, deep, or anything else, it's noise for the sake of noise.
I gave Night Ripper 5 stars but I can't in good conscience recommend this whatsoever.

Underrated Album - Still sounds good.......2007-03-25
I'd forgotten all about this album and went about 30 years from when I first listened to it until I bought it on amazon. It still sounds great, good songs, excellent musicians and catchy arrangements. Features a great contribution from the unfairly maligned Donnie Dacus.
should have been billed as "Stephen Stills & Donnie Dacus", but a real good album regardless.......2007-02-08
Although credited as a Stephen Stills solo album, 1976's "Illegal Stills" probably should have been billed as a "Stephen Stills & Donnie Dacus" duo album. Dacus had a heavy hand on Stills' previous album (not including the "Live" album), 1975's "Stills", but he comes to the fore even more here--he contributes to the songwriting on a handful of tracks, plus he seems to handle a majority of the background vocals and even gets lead vocal spotlights on 3 songs.
Coming to this album today, knowing that Dacus later went on to join one of the '70s ultimate schlock-pop bands Chicago (following the death of Terry Kath), you might be baffled as to why the astonishingly-talented Stills would allow Dacus to contribute so much to what's billed as a Stephen Stills solo album. It could be because marriage troubles had begun to rear their head for Stills' during the making of it and that Stills wanted someone who was competent and reliable and yet didn't have an overarching ego and agenda of their own to push (e.g., Neil Young).
And it worked out really well. "Illegal Stills" is indeed very slick in a mid-'70s kind of way, and on the whole it has an uncharacteristically lightweight feel for Stephen, but it's a highly enjoyable listen. Latin rhythms crop up repeatedly, always to excellent effect. "Midnight In Paris" was written by Dacus and Stills' then-wife Veronique Sanson (Dacus had been a member of Sanson's backing band), and it's an irresistible feel-good tune with Dacus singing lead on the English-language verses and Stills giving it his best on the middle verse which--surprise, surprise--is sung in French. The all-out Latin-pop number "No Me Niegas" has a certain corniness to it, but it's smile-inducing and amusing as opposed to cringe-worthy. Dacus' slick blue-eyed-soul vocals prove to be an engaging foil for Stills' huskiness on the irresistible "Closer To You", again done up as a duet between the two; the Dacus-sung lyrics, which I presume he also wrote, are fairly laughable, but Dacus does a commendable job of masking their corniness with his slick, yet carefully-nuanced vocals. The excellent album-opener "Buyin' Time" is a surging, organ-soaked uptempo number with a super-cool instrumental mid-section. "Different Tongues" is a crafty ballad with a lush synthesizer background. The imaginative re-working of Neil Young's "The Loner" really cooks, toppling Neil's own original version. Dacus gets a lead vocal all to himself on a song that he primarily wrote (although Stills is co-credited in the booklet) called "Ring of Love" which is an excellent feel-good tune--it's catchy and has a great groove to it.
It'd be stretching it though to hail the album as a neglected masterpiece. "Stateline Blues" is quite brief, but still a fairly dull and overly-repetitive acoustic-based number. The album-closing "Circlin'" is energetically performed and has a pretty catchy chorus, but still feels underdeveloped.
Overall though, "Illegal Stills" is a damn good album. Don't be fooled by people who tell you Stephen was losing it by the point, or that the prominent role of Donnie Dacus signals Stills' artistic bankruptcy.
Not Regal... Illegal.......2004-04-18
This is the finest album Donnie Dacus ever made. Unfortunately
it's suppose to be a Stephen Stills album, and as such it is only
mediocre. So the value of the album lies somewhere between
those two standards.
Dacus' contributions to the work are extensive, and in some
respects exemplary. He collaborates with Stills in composing
four songs, and writes another with Stills' wife, Veronique
Sanson. It's to his credit that three of these numbers, `Midnight
In Paris', `Closer To You', and `Soldier', are some of the better
compositions on the disc. Dacus, formerly of the band Spirit,
also contrbutes lead and background vocals and fine guitar work.
He is a worthy protege and second guitar foil for Stills.
But one wonders why such a talented and accomplished artist
such as Stills even needed a protege. Part of the answer lies in Stephen's
declining output as a composer. In his biography `Shakey", Neil
Young notes that he resisted overtures from Stills, David Crosby
and Graham Nash during their 1974 tour to release a second
CSNY disc simply because the others were not generating any
new material. He states that he "couldn't believe they were
finished". While none of them were "finished", in retrospect it
is clear that Neil recognized their diminishing output, especially
in comparison to his own.
In addition, it seems Stephen lost his grip on the folk, country,
and blues based rock, as well as the wah-pedal trademark
guitar sound that he had parlayed into so much success.
"Illegal" is dominated by the power-pop sound more suited
to Dacus, who would go on to play in power-pop groups
such as Chicago and Badfinger in the late 1970's and early
1980's, while Stephen joined forces again with Crosby and
Nash for 2 successful albums and a couple even less
successful than `Illegal' attempts to resurrect his solo career.
`Illegal' only features one classic Stills tune, `Buyin' Time',
an indictment of the failed economic policies of Richard
Nixon and Gerald Ford. Stills began performing the song
in mid-1975 as an acoustic number, but this studio version
really rocks the Casbah. His cover of Young's `The Loner'
is also a hot tune, but was bound to pale in comparison to
Young's pristine version. The closer, `Circlin', was first
performed on the brief Stills-Young Band tour in the summer
of 1976, and is an upbeat, interesting number. `Soldier' is
a gutsy protest song in the aftermath of Vietnam. Stills
offers his requisite Latin-hued number in `No Me Neigas',
but it is only a shadow of other Latino songs from Stills
such as `Cuban Bluegrass'. `Stateline Blues' seems to
lack the grit, and as Stills himself said in `Bluesman', "the
blues is pain, the way men cry, like tired rain...", to be
considered a `true' blues song. It is a fun song about
gambling, though Stills did a better take on the same
topic with 1970's `Black Queen'. `Ring Of Love' is
filler, a song Stills himself describes in the liner notes as
one "Donnie pulled...out of his past". Shouldn't be part
of a Stills CD.
There are interesting comments included from Stills on
the makings and origins of each song, as well as lyrics.
While `Illegal' is certainly a departure from the formula
that made Stills one of the premier artists in rock from
1966 to 1976, it contains enough quality material to
be considered essential to Stills fans. For the more
casual listener, there are many Stephen Stills releases
that would be a more desirable purchase, especially
the first Manassas CD, his first solo album, and his
early collaborations with Crosby, Nash and Young.
Not his first album to start with but don't overlook.......2001-11-20
Start with his first debut, then Manassas (first one) and then #2 and then "Live" and his 1975 "Stills". This album reminds me of the band "Gentle Giant" who's many albums are mediocre/unmemorable at first listen but then get better and better with each repeated play. For those expecting early classic Stills', this album does not deliver. But this album shows Still's ability to adapt to arrangements with higher production and he gets a little help from his friends (a few songs were not written by him) including a redo of Neil Young's "The Longer". At times, this reminds me of what the Eagles were doing on their "Long Run" album but maybe not to the same success they experienced. My favorite would have to be the soley accoustic "Stateline Blues" and the latin-influenced "No Me Niegas" with it's catchy riffs. I agree that this album is not as strong as his previous works (the over instrumentation at times drowns out his guitar-work and the music/lyrics tend to be much lighter natured than on his previous works) but it's still better than most of the popular music by artists that were coming out in the 80's and 90's. If you really like Stills first few albums, you should get this but don't expect the same. If you found his first few albums so-so, then you're best to skip.
Stills' Most Underrated Album.......2001-11-06
As a big fan of Steve Stills, I've long felt that he never received his due as a solo artist from rock critics in general. In fact, the vitriol which some professional reviewers have used in deriding his solo efforts is perplexing to me. But of all Stills' albums, none has been as unfairly maligned as "Illegal Stills". This album should have been recognized for what it was: an unmistakable statement from a great artist that, contrary to popular opinion, his skills had not diminished one bit. "Ring of Love" and "Circlin'" would have sounded right at home on top 40 radio, while "Soldier" was haunting and "The Loner" blew Neil Young's version of the song out of the water. The band is hot, the songs are excellent, the arrangements are imaginative, and on the whole this compares very favorably with the two Stills albums that get all the accolades - the debut, and the first Manassas album.

Somewhat Shallow Fun.......2007-06-01
I'll start by saying that I am not more than an extremely casual fan of Blur. I don't own any of their records and have never been impressed or dissatisfied with anything I've heard by them.
On the other hand, this album has got something that captures my interest. I find myself listening to it at least once per week. I can't say exactly why. The lyrics are simple, the music is very predictable at times, and under most circumstances I'd consider something of this ilk to be overproduced. Despite all of this though, it works. It's upbeat and positive without being sugary, and the choruses are all devilishly catchy without being repetitive (for the most part). The track "You & I" never fails to put me in a good mood.
I must admit the overall "Britishness" of it is also charming to a yank like myself. Much of this album would probably be down right annoying from an American band.
In conclusion, even if you aren't a fan of Blur, you may find something here worth a listen.
Carbon-Copies Album.......2007-01-28
There are a few quality songs on "Love Travels at Illegal Speeds" but overall I was quite disappointed by the album.
Where most artists tend to expand upon their sound, broaden their scope, and improve upon the originality of their songwriting, Graham Coxon appears to be going backwards. I wasn't exactly sure what the point of this album was, as the majority of the songs are merely carbon-copies of other artists' styles and genres; if I want to hear the Sex Pistols I will buy one of their cds, or the same thing for The Beatles.
After hearing the originality and quality of Coxon's previous work from "You're So Great", "Coffee & T.V.", "Bitter Tears", or "Escape Song" it was quite a let-down to hear such uninspiring and basic music on his latest work.
This is not all bad news however; perhaps Mr. Coxon is running out of ideas and may have all the more reason to rejoin Blur so they can put out their best work yet.
rockin Graham.......2006-12-14
Finally got this and boy was I missing a FANTASTIC album!!! This is how a great rock album should be great songs with great hooks! To bad BLUR was not this good!
Solid and very good...but not as good as the previous one...........2006-11-21
....Love Travels at Illegal Speeds is Graham Coxon's (guitarist extrodinaire, formerly of Blur) 6th solo album. Following in the vein of his previous album, the nearly perfect Happiness in Magazines, it's full of melodic power pop and rock songs (ironic considering his first 3 albums are all lo-fi do-it-yourself affairs and he left Blur supposedly to avoid playing music like THIS!). This album, full of what Graham calls "songs about love" from every angle, while not as good as Magazine, is still very, very good.
It starts off with Standing On My Own Again, a rockin' opener. The best songs on the album also happen to be the ones constructed best and with memorable hooks: Standing On My Own, What's He Got?, You and I, Don't Believe Anything I Say. All the songs are good in their own way, although Graham does use a Cockney accent he has never displayed on previous albums that can get slightly whiny-sounding.
Graham plays everything on this album except for keyboards and horns, and he does a great job....he's a solid drummer, a good bass player, and as has been well known, one of the greatest British guitarists of his generation, although it's much more subtle on his solo albums than it was in Blur.
Overall, a great, solid album, not as good as Magazines (or even Kiss of Morning, at that) but still a worthy addition to his solo catalog. Now if only those rumours of Graham returning to Blur to do one final album before they call it day (as reported in NME in November of 2006) turn out to be true.........
good.......2006-03-31
If you are a Blur or Graham Coxon fan, then this is a must buy. Two songs on this CD really stand out for me: "You and I" and "Gimmie Some Love." Graham has made a good rock album, and he sings like he's having a blast, which is refreshing. However, many of the songs just don't seem as unique or quirky as the songs on Happiness in Magazines or his other albums. All in all a very enjoyable album and better than 94.7% of the new music out there today.

Another classic in the making.......2004-10-10
I just picked up a copy of Slow Train's Illegal Cargo and without a doubt it's hottttt for this summer. Lady Z's vocals are on the button with a haunting soulful echos which captivates your entire body. Every track finds its way deep into your mind eventually exploding through your feet. I may be a bit bias on this one since Lady Z is from St.James Trinidad (West Indies). But don't just take my advice, check out any real music lover and they will tell you that THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!
ILLEGALLY YOURS!!!.......2004-06-02
I first discovered Slow Train Soul on the "Hotel Costes 6" CD--"In the Black of Night"--and decided to try them out. Slow Train Soul are the petite Lady Z and a hippie named Morten Varano, who have put together a very impressive CD. Lady Z's vocals are dark and sensual and meander across lazy, melodic riffs and funky basslines like a true veteran. Songs of note are "Slow Train", "Illegal Cargo", "Intuition", "Inna City Woman", "Trail of Dawn" and "Stoned Rays." Slow Train Soul's "Illegal Cargo" chugs along at a pace that's easy on the body and on the mind. Recommended!
Great CD.......2004-05-14
I love this album! It's so lush and complex it's hard to describe, but I'll try. I definitely hear some soul influence in the music but it's also pretty electronic in nature. it's very layered, with a variety of different textures and sounds. The production work is genius and the vocals totally hit me right where I live. This could possible be described as lounge music, although I think it's a little more evocative than that. Well, that's the best I can do, all I can say is I highly reccomend it, well done!
Just fantastic!.......2004-05-06
A British friend introduced me to Slow Train and I must say since I have purchased this CD, it has not left my CD player!
This is soulful lounge music! "Twisted Cupid" is just hypnotic! If you are a fan of Hotel Costes then you will be more that happy you invested in this CD.

Little fish in a big sea (2.5/5).......2007-04-20
Illegal was the creation of hip hop superproducer Dallas Austin, attempting to cash in on the kiddie rap fad in 1993. He took two already established teenage rappers, Jamal "Mally G," a Philadelphia native and affiliate of Erick Sermon and his Def Squad collective, and Lil' Malik, a Long Beach MC and cousin of Snoop Dogg, who appeared on such g-funk classics as Doggystyle and Regulate...G Funk Era to form a duo. This idea sounds great on paper, and could have been executed to perfection. The boys are both very good rappers in their own rights, possessing nice, angry flows and speaking angrily of a world beyond their years. However, most of the time it seems that all Jamal and Malik have in common is their age, which often results in cliched raps. Basically the whole album is spent with threats and posturing in their verses, none too convincing. They do not hesitate to curse and do not allow their vocabulary to be limited by their ages, and they try to position themselves as more hardcore than their teenage peers. They throw shots at other teen acts like Kriss Kross and Da Youngsta's during the album. I find the production to be another problem. With young rappers, often times production makes or breaks the product. Groups like Da Youngsta's were provided with such great production that it overshadowed their young rhyming skills. Given Malik's pedigree, you might expect a little g-funk in the music, but there is absolutely none. Malik is not at home over these beats. There's an impressive producers list, including Dallas Austin, Erick Sermon, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, and Biz Markie, creating a decidedly east coast sound. Most of the time, though, you'll get the feeling these teenagers got these producers' throwaway beats. The beats are all very simple, repetitive, sparse, and often quite boring. Although they're good rappers, Malik and Jamal can't overcompensate for the too simplistic music, especially because they lack any real chemistry. "The Untold Truth" certainly has its moments, and the first few tracks are fine hip hop songs. They show great potential, but I'd much rather hear either MC on their own with production better suited to them. This album could have been a great product but wasn't pulled off too well.
The album begins with the best songs. On "Back in the Day" they reminisce about growing up over probably the nicest beat of the record. The pretty good "Illegal Will Rock" also has decent production with a nice hook, and the funkier single "Head or Gut" is probably the most memorable song. "Crumbsnatcher" is okay but fairly generic, improved slightly by a Diamond D beat and guest verse, and Erick Sermon laces "We Getz Buzy" with one of his standard upbeat, bass-heavy beat. "Stick 'Em Up" is absolutely forgettable, as is "Understand the Flow." "On da M.I.C." brings Lord Finesse to take control of a decent song, but "Ban de Iggity" and "Lights, Camera, Action" are nothing memorable. The album ends with the terrible "If U Want It," which is almost unbearable with a terrible chorus.
If you're expecting a g-funk album, look elsewhere, or if you're expecting something along the lines of Da Youngsta's, again look elsewhere. This is a sub-par album of fairly generic kiddie rap, with boring production and nothing to make it stand out. Most of it isn't terrible, but there's not a single memorable track on the disc. This isn't one I recommend for the collection.
These little dudes could spit........2006-12-20
Def Squad affiliate Mally G and DPG affiliate Hershey Chocolate Loc Malik dropped this near classic back in 93. They were the hardcore alternative to Kriss Kross & Another Bad Creation. Some people can't get with preteens using profanity, but for those that can - This is the dopest kiddie rap act ever.
Legalized.......2006-01-22
With much success of teen hip-hop / rap act Kris Kross, major labels were seeking other young artist to sign. Here we have Mr. Malik and Jamal also known as Illegal who's lyrics was a lot rougher and painful in comparison to their peers. The Untold Truth didn't have any restraints with it's contents as the duo challenged others acts such as Kris Kross, Da Youngsta's, Chi-Ali, Da Family for example. "Back In The Day", one of the album's classic highlights begins this album off with these 14-year old experiences that was far beyond their age over a West Coast track. Changing speeds and atmospheres, they go to a more crowd influenced track "Illegal Will Rock". Illegal proved their lyrical versatility, yet still keeping their style street on "CrumbSnatcher" featuring Diamond D. "Stick 'Em Up" and "Understand The Flow" shows a more adrenaline rush with hyper choruses and hooks for crowd involvement as they team up for that one-two swing sharing shine. The other highlight is found with the Reggae / Jamaican production by Dallas Austin on "Ban Da Iggidy" as the two attacks Das Efx style clones. The album nearly falls short of solid due to sub par production but with the help of Colin Wolfe, Diamond D. and Dallas Austin they placed a more personal touch to separate Illegal from teenage acts.
Young rappers who were tough! .......2005-04-10
Illegal's The Untold Truth from 1993 is still a classic to this day! Unlike the more clean cut Kris Kross or ABC, these young rappers cursed. But with some tough beats to match it. They never held back on all of their album and they had some funky numbers in Head or Gut, the Erick Sermon funk of We Gets Busy, Diamond D's funky Illegal Will Rock, and Lord Finesse's On The M.I.C. and its no nonsense style. They even dissed Kris Kross and ABC on We Gets Busy! And Dallas Austin and Colin Wolfe gave them a heavy number in Back in the Day, the strong opening track. This was just as hard hitting as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's first albums and it is hip hop in its truest form. Raw and gritty in its lyrics and music!
Hardcore Kiddie Rap??? (3.5 Stars).......2004-10-04
After the success of Kriss Kross in 1992, record companies were putting out kiddie hip hop groups at breakneck speed. Groups like Fam Lee, Da Youngstaz, Quo, and Illegal were all released during this period. I have to admit that all of their LPs sucked with the exception of this Illegal album. And of all of the previously mentioned groups, only Kriss Kross and Da Youngstaz managed to make more than two albums. I find that odd because Illegal had the best album out of all of them. The production was on point and for them to be so young they kept it hardcore as if they had been doing this for 20 years. Illegal consisted of MCs Jamal and Malik. Jamal went on to become an underrated but tight MC on the solo tip and Malik made an appearance on a single from Monica's "Miss Thang" album (Like This And Like That) in 1995 and on Warren G's "Take A Look Over Your Shoulder" LP (What We Go Through....and that song is pretty dope)in 1997 and then disappeared again only to reappear on the underground gangsta rap circuit in Cali as the MC Hershey Locc. Malik would never put out an album on his own that was as good as this group album, but Jamal's solo LP (1995's "Last Chance, No Breaks") is pretty dope. But before all of that, there was this Illegal album. Like I said before, the beats were on point and the lyrics showed a toughness beyond their years. The production was handled by a bunch of different producers. Erick Sermon, Dallas Austin, and Diamond D produce 2 tracks apiece. The rest of the production is handled by Spearhead X, E Locc, Biz Markie & Cool V, Lord Finesse, and Colin Wolfe. Most people would remember this album for its two hit singles "Head Or Gut" and "We Getz Busy" feat. Erick Sermon.
There are some missteps on the album though. "Understand The Flow" isn't a bad song, but it's almost 5 minutes and isn't necessarily good enough to hold your attention for that long. And "On Da M.I.C." features Lord Finesse but it's still boring. But for the most part, the album is pretty good.
Overall, I wouldn't say that this album is essential rap music, but it's a pretty good album that would make a solid addition to your rap collection.
