Darin at the Copa.......2007-07-28
The first and, I suspect, the most commercially successful of all the "At the Copa" albums released in the early 60's.
It reveals a cock-sure Darin, all of 23, facing and winning over an "adult" (tee-hee!) audience not used to such brashness.
Perhaps he was brash, but he wore it well. On others far less talented, it would have spelled d-o-o-m!
I have always loved this man (as an entertainer, silly!) and even though I have the CD version of this album, I have to this day kept the original LP.
They will never make 'em like that again!
If you purchase but one live album, make it this one!!
Pure nostalga.......2007-07-23
I purchased this disc as a replacemnt for the aging 33rpm Lp I have had sinc its original issue.
Listening to Darin again is heaven.
Incomparable Darin.......2006-11-07
Great cd; wonderful that his performances were preserved because his talent is sorely missed.
If you say Bobby who?-You need this........2006-08-11
No review this time. Incredible is all I'm going to say.
If you like this genre of music, then dig this total and complete entertainer with enough panache, charisma & TALENT to melt your heart and ease your mind.
Excellent!.......2006-07-06
"Bobby Darin's premiere at the Copa went down in the Copacabana history books ad one of the standouts. Darin received to many wires of congrats that Western Union told him "you hold the record for telegrams in one night" - Walter Winchell, New York Mirror.
This statement appears on the back of lp "Darin At The Copa", and it can not get any better then that. Darin sings lively versons of his hit songs : Mack The Knife, That's All and Some of these days, along with excellent versions of Clementine and Dream Lover.
This CD shows the wide range of talent that Darin had extending far beyond singing. He's comedic, charming, and obviously a pleasure giver to those who attended his premeire at the Copacabana. I highly recommend this CD to anyone, Bobby Darin fan or not. Some say that this is not Darin at his best but in my opinion, it does not get much better than this.

2 sides of Sam but 1 FABULOUS guy.......2007-01-26
Listen to "Copa" and "Harlem Square" back-to-back and you'll hear a difference but no phoniness. Sam Cooke was the best. With his talent, charm and good looks, who knows what he would have contributed.
A Folk-ish Sam Cooke.......2006-12-10
An amazing record and one that is interesting from a historical perspective;
the prograam was tailored obviously for the trendy tastes of the day, which would have been the mainstream, folk craze as embodied not only by Dylan (blowin in the wind is covered) but also Mitch Miller (a hootenany joke is made during If I had a Hammer) and his prime time sing alongs.
Sam is the master truly. Great spirit and effortless sounding singing.
Sam Swings, but for a Soulful Treat, get the Harlem Night Club Recording.......2006-10-27
Sam Cooke at the Copa is an incredible recording and showcases Sam's beautiful voice like nothing else. It is a must have for any Sam Cooke fan. That said, I would still recommend the Live at Harlem recording. The Copa recording, as someone else has mentioned, was for a primarily white audience. While listening you get the sense that Sam is holding back. Despite the near "soulless" recording, Sam's ability to croon puts this recording with the likes of Frank Sinatra's Live at the Sands. The band is incredible, the arrangements are timeless and tasteful, and Sam is money! Sam Cooke at the Copa compared to Live at Harlem is like a white church sing-a-long versus a beautiful, spriritual Black gospel choir.
Another Side of Sam Cooke: the crooner.......2005-11-30
Early is his career Sam Cooke performed at the Copa and he 'bombed'. It took a lot of experience and a few years later before he returned. A few weeks before he performed a similar show in upstate New York and again that was not a success. With arranger Rene Hall he started working on new arrangements and other songs and we should be really glad he did.
At The Copa is fantastic and shows Sam as the ultimate cross-over artist. There are some musical hits, some of his own hits and a very good Bob Dylan cover. The end of the show he starts doing more of his gospel style singing and that's where it really gets interesting. The 70%white/30%black audience does the answer to his calls.
But...
for me this album has always been a little too neat. I think the real Sam can better be heard on the Live at the Harlem Square club album where he performs in the black ghetto of Miami and turns it into a real gospel/soul show.
For Sam as gospel star get 'The Complete Recordings of Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers', for Sam as songwriter get 'Portrait of a Legend' and if you want to hear Sam as the smooth crossover artists definitely get this album.
For the love of music..........2005-08-06
Nothing can compare to the control and power generated from this performance. The only disapponting thing about this album is that it was one of his final recordings. The record is smooth and radiant from track one, anyone who loves music must own this cd and if you are sam cooke fan-- it is taboo that you do not have it. My favorite utterance is when he mentions in each fast paced song, "let me sing it for me this time". When he says this he rips into a soulful version to end a jazz/swing number... Absolutely delightful!

Customer Reviews:
Incomplete Re-issues.......2006-09-07
The series of 2 Classic Albums 1CD has brought back into catalogue a lot of lost Motown gems, usually in state of the art mastering and at a reasonable price, and is to be applauded for that. In some cases, it falls short of the ideal, and this is the most striking example I have encountered thus far. To start with, there is the choice of pairing. Live At The Copa was the group's eighth album, from December 1968, and their second live album. With A Lot O' Soul preceded it by three album in August 1967. In between came The Temptations Wish It Would Rain and In A Mellow Mood, both of which share another pairing in the series. Go figure.
More crucially, both albums are incomplete. Two key songs are common to both original albums, (I Know) I'm Losing You and You're My Everything, both major hits for the group. Firstly, (I Know) I'm Losing You is dropped from the end of Live At The Copa, as the applause from the preceding title is hastily and peremptorily faded. Apart from destroying the flow of the original conception of the album, it makes that track unavailable on CD.
Secondly, the studio version of You're My Everything is criminally absent from With A Lot O' Soul. Although this track is available on a number of compilations, its censorship from its rightful original album placing is unforgivable. No reference is made to these cuts, although both titles are shown in the replica sleeves from the original albums as reproduced inside the booklet. As the CD has a playing time of 72:15, both could have been included.
Live At The Copa marked one of the first concert appearances of Dennis Edwards in place of David Ruffin, and took place at the Copacabana in New York at an unspecified date in 1968 (some further details would have been welcomed). It shows how quickly and successfully he integrated into the group. The set mixed familiar Motown material with Broadway standards popular with the sophisticates of the day (an audience being wooed by Berry Gordy), and mostly taken from their In A Mellow Mood album. The recording is jinxed with technical shortcomings, mostly frequent microphone clickings and a badly distorting overload during I Wish It Would Rain, though there are also some very clumsy edits between songs, notably after The Impossible Dream. Whether the latter were on the original album, and so are excusable on grounds of historical accuracy, or are further examples of butchering by the re-issue compilers is unclear.
The Temptations With A Lot O' Soul is a classic Temptations album on many levels - the line-up, the producers and arrangers, the songs - and regarded as among their best of their "old style" releases. Although most of it was produced by Norman Whitfield, there are three Smokey Robinson productions of his own songs (recorded over the summer of 1966), including a cover of Marvin Gaye's Now That You've Won Me; one produced by Frank Wilson; one by Ivy Jo Hunter; and unusually one from the Holland/Dozier/Holland team, Just One Last Look. This is very much in the style of the Four Tops, who did also record an unreleased version in 1967. Two of the others are also in arrangements reminiscent of the Four Tops, the single (Loneliness Made Me Realise) It's You That I Need (originally a single for Eddie Holland in 1963) and Sorry Is A Sorry Word, an Eddie Holland/Ivy Jo song consigned to the B-side of All I Need. The mastering of the studio album is very good, although All I Need does lose a few seconds from the original album version.
The range of the band is shown to excellent advantage and though David Ruffin is quite deservedly the most prominent lead vocalist, Paul Williams is given No More Water In The Well, Otis Williams leads Don't Me Send me Away (both Smokey songs), while Eddie Kendricks sings both Save My Love For A Rainy Day and Two Sides To Love. David and Eddie shared the spotlight on You're My Everything, had it been included.
I hope Motown continue to activate the catalogue with these priceless re-issues, but that they learn from the rather botched job they made of this important release and perhaps prepare a corrected version.
LIVE AT THE COPA/MUSIC DIRECTOR PROPS.......2004-12-24
HERE ARE SOME ACCOLADES TO THE MAN WHO DIRECTED THE BAND AND ARRANGED THE MUSIC DIRECTION OF THE LIVE SHOWS- MR CORNELIUS GRANT. HE WAS NOT ONLY THE LEAD GUITARIST, HE WROTE A FEW OF THE TEMPS BIG HITS SUCH AS "I KNOW iM LOSING YOU AND YOURE MY EVERYTHING. MY COUSIN NORMAN ROBERTS WAS THE DRUMMER AT THAT TIME. LIVE SHOWS SPEAK NOT ONLY FOR THE TALENT OF THE SINGERS, BUT FOR THE MUSICIANS WHO READ THAT SHEET MUSIC NOTE FOR NOTE AND COULD WRITE MUSIC AS WELL. MR GRANT HAS BEEN A FRIEND OF MINE SINCE 1961. THIS IS FROM A PHILLY INTL STUDIO MUSICIAN
This one's ok........2003-06-25
I'm not overly impressed w/the Copa part of this cd. They just don't seem to be enjoying themselves as much. Which may be a reflection of what was going on in the group at this time. Now, on the Temptations LIVE!, now that one rocks!! I really wish I was there!! You can hear them doing the claps that go w/certain dance moves (for example My Girl). The audience is going wild and it just seems like a more fun and personable show.
I love Dennis, but I love David more, so I was quite happy to hear him on AWLOS.
Cool two-fer, but if u want real live action, get Temptations LIVE! I might have to buy another one if I wear mine out!!
Edit:7.23.03
**I so take back my previous statements!! While this show doesn't have the same live feel of Temptations LIVE!, it is still a great show. I believe it was Den's first w/the group. He slides right in. He doesn't try to be David...he's Dennis and he was on fire!!! I love the improv stuff he does during I Could Never Love Another. Paul is great, EDDIE IS GREAT (Check out You're My Everything, With These Hands, and Please Return Your Love to Me).
These guys were the masters!!! I am a young fan at 20, but these guys envoke more out of me than ANY group of my generation that I probably SHOULD be listening to! I can't speak about the current crop.as I am a Classic/Hall of Fame Temptfan, but purchase anything with The Voices (David, EDDIE, Paul, and Dennis) and you will NEVER be disappointed!!!
The With A Whole Lot o' Soul cd is classic also. I'm Losing You is the perfect opener for the disc. I love hearing Cornelius Grant on the guitar and Ruffin's heavy breath saying "Ooohooo. Your LOVE is fading!" It sends shivers up my spine!!
I read where people said things are missing from the original Copa LP. I wish they would have left whatever was missing on. I am a sucker for live shows. It shows what a group is really made of.
So cop this one. You're in for a treat!!!
missing 2 songs!.......2002-11-13
I was very disapointed in this cd. As all the other reviews stated the LIVE AT THE COPA portion is missing the last song (i know i'm losing you) but also, WITH A LOT OF SOUL is missing one of their best songs ever YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING. Can anyone tell me if this song was not released on the uk version? Also does anyone notice all the noise during the COPA portion (clicks ETC... And last A WARNING! about THE 2 fer SONG FOR YOU/MASTERPIECE CD. I just read that the masterpieces song are edited. If they are not going to release these cds right, than why release them at all!
Missing a song.......2002-02-14
Great stuff, but Copa is missing the last song. I wasn't aware of it until I saw the reproduced back cover of the original album. They should let a person know on the cover if songs are missing.

Product Description
To Motown founder Berry Gordy, the Copa was a destination. The mere concept that a roster of black artists from inner-city Detroit who had a few teen hits would perform there, release albums recorded there and be accepted and return there was a revolutionary thought. And it happened.
Marvin wanted to be the Motown crooner, to sit on a stool and purr love songs like Perry Como, Nat and Sinatra. When he got his shot, over the first two weekends of August 1966 during a dry hits period Marvin was game but ambivalent: he chafed at the choreography, prepared little stage patter, wavered a bit during the first set. But reviews were generally good, and Motown sent an eight-track reel-to-reel tape recorder the second weekend to record five shows. Marvin Gaye At The Copa was slated to be released in early 1967, with catalog number Tamla 273, and Motowns art department mocked up a cover.
It never happened. The shows were never mixed down for staff review. Marvin never returned to the Copa. Until right now.
Hip-O Selects edition represents the best of those shows. Since Marvin didnt do the exact same set every night, now you can feel like you went to every one. Newly and painstakingly remixed, the Select version runs twice as long as what the original LP may have been. Marvin is amped from the opening number, getting the audience involved during How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), and making the ladies swoon during the sexy Brazilian number, Laia Ladia (Reza).
His ballads are breathtaking, especially Night Song, taken from Sammy Davis Jr.s Broadway show Golden Boy. He takes on Sinatra, re-interpreting Strangers In The Night, which then was a #1 hit for the Chairman. The Motown Medleys are also a lot of fun, as they include (brief) live versions of his songs he rarely did live and hits by other Motown artists. The Copacabana Orchestra, conducted by Motowns Maurice King, kicks butt from start to finish.

Shake the Rafters!.......2004-02-26
If you have ever played in a big band (and I have for over thirty years), you will want to listen to track eleven before you listen to another note on this CD. I guarantee that however many times you played "In the Mood", you never heard it like this.
The Big Kahuna slows the tempo WAAAY down, finds chords and passages between the notes that Glenn Miller never thought of and creates a musical mood that will have your honey melting into your arms. Oh yeah, it's THAT kind of good.
Put this CD in your Bose and crank it up.
By the way, a "humuhumu-nukunuku-a-pua-a" is the unofficial Hawaiian state fish, aka, a trigger fish. [See track 12.]
Makes you shake your hula hips.......2002-08-01
"Shake Those Hula Hips" is one of the most orginal albums released in my lifetime. Matt Catingub and his remarkable big band blend the powerful brass of swing, swinging rythym of wartime Hawaii, and soulful lyrics of lounge together and the sound produced is fantastic. You feel as though you're in a dance hall near Pearl Harbor in 1945. The best tracks are "Shake Those Hula Hips" and "My Little Grass Shack". The former, a unique composition by Catingub, is reinforced by his intruiging and powerful vocals. Several of the tracks also include Rosemary Clooney's distinctive voice, which sadly, will never be heard again. "Shake Those Hula Hips" is a must have for any fan of the music genres listed above.
KAHUNA CONQUERS HAWAII.......2002-04-28
Just as he did on his previous CD, HAWAIIAN SWING and with Rosemary Clooney on her album SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY, Da Big Kahuna (Matt Catingub) and his Copa Cat Pack take some familiar songs like "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" and some lesser known classics like "Ain't No Big Thing"--he shakes and stirs them up with Hawaiian tunes such as "The Princess Poo-poo-ly Has Plenty Papaya" (No, I am NOT making that title up!) adds in a bit of Rosemary Clooney on "And The Angels Sing" and her daughter in law, Debbie Boone, on the Poo-poo-ly number--and comes up with a Big Band a la Hawaii sound that is unbeatable.
Ever wonder what a Big Band would sound like wailing on the theme from "I Dream of Jeannie?" OK, how about "Hawaii Five-O?" The answer is: they sound terrific. So does Da Big Kahuna's arrangement of Peggy Lee's "Fever" and an upbeat version, instead of Sinatra's introspective arrangement, of "It Was A Very Good Year."
Trust me: This album will put a smile on your face. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Swingin' haha!!.......2001-06-22
BIG KAHUNA and the Copa Cat Pack is BACK with Shake Those Hula Hips, an album that shakes and stirs the flavors of big band swing, Hawaiian songs, TV themes, Las Vegas lounge, and full-strength party music into a big, tasty, mightily swinging, musical Mai Tai. An artful arranger, masterful saxophonist, hip crooner and animated bandleader, the BIG KAHUNA (aka Matt Catingub) packs fun and excitement into each and every swinging note.
This time around, BIG KAHUNA and the Copa Cat Pack put an indelible swinging stamp on the Duke Ellington classic "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Johnny Mercer's "And The Angels Sing (featuring Rosemary Clooney)" as well as rousing timeless anthems like "Tequila," "Hawaii Five-O" and "Princess Poo-Poo-Ly Has Plenty Papaya (featuring Debby Boone)". So spin this CD, put on your favorite Hawaiian shirt, grab a Mai Tai, and join the par-tay! It's time to Shake Those Hula Hips!

Album Description
Lila Downs is one of the finest and most interesting of all the singers in the world music scene at the moment. A Mexican who was singing Mariachi tunes when she was just 8 years old, but who later became part of the army of "Deadheads" while attending college in Minnesota, Lila has a striking, vibrant voice and has developed a fascination and respect for the deepest of her Mexican roots. Her previous albums have explored music and songs from the various disparate regions of Mexico as well as the themes and concerns of modern life in that country. Her last album, One Blood/Una Sangre, gave her a breakthrough in the UK leading to a nomination for the Radio 3 Award for World Music, and she was one of the undoubted stars of the La Linea festival in London. The world music press and radio love her serious approach to music and her incredible voice and there is much interest for interviews and sessions when she returns to the Barbican on April 4th for her return to this year's La Linea Festival. The album will be led by a full feature in Songlines magazine with a full set of previews/reviews/features to follow.

Swing might seem an exclusively urban phenomenon, a facet of cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Kansas City. Don't mention that to Matt Catingub, vocalist, alto saxophonist, pianist, Copa Cat Pack bandleader, and all-around Big Kahuna. Catingub's got swing pegged as ripe for a Hawaiian connection. On tunes like "Pearly Shells" (familiar to many as the melody for C&H sugar commercials in the 1970s), he sounds utterly convincing. He leads his 12-piece band through melodies that don't challenge with unfamiliarity so much as they ring with a comfy simplicity that keeps its cool by simply swinging hard. The vibe is laid back in the way Count Basie was, which is to say that the Copa Cat Pack doesn't get worked up in an Ellingtonian display of complex arrangements. What's best, the band can really cook, with Catingub throwing out solid solos while the band powers ahead danceably. Their take on Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia" is so quick that you miss the feeling of a cop-show theme, the utterly fun, quick jolt. --Andrew Bartlett

I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS THINKING.......2002-04-28
Uh, where's the Hawaiian part? This is a hot tight band, with a big TONIGHT SHOW sound. And a couple of wedding singers.
Real tight, corny arrangements. Good music.
But, "We're Going To The Hukilao" never sounded worse.
If you like good music without a Hawaiian feeling, boy! this is your CD!
I'll keep it, though. My wife really likes it.
You decide. (But think: NOT HAWAIIAN)
THIS'LL MAKE YOU SMILE.......2002-02-03
I first heard BIG KAHUNA and his COPA CAT PACK on the latest Rosemary Clooney album SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. That album is a winner and it is easy to see why "the girl singer" loves working with this big band.
HAWAIIAN SWING is an album to cheer you when you're down; it's an album to play when you are cleaning the house; it's an album to listen to with friends at a party; it's an album to make you listen to songs you know and have heard your whole life (i.e. Benny Goodman's "Stompin' At The Savoy' or Dizzie Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia," etc.)and hear them as if for the first time. It's a big band sound with a 21st Century, Hawaiian twist.
The vocals are handled terrifically by The Big Kahuna and Linda Harmon. The entire band is comprised of saxes, trumpets, piano, trombones, bass and drums. It is a sound that will catch you off guard and make you smile...broadly. I have played this album, literally, dozens of times since buying it less than a month ago. The sound, as usual with Concord Jazz, is first rate.
It's hard to pick favorites on this dizzyingly fine CD, but I especially liked the gorgeous Johnny Mercer ballad, "I Remember You," Duke Ellington's "Love You Madly" and one of the wonderful original songs: Matt Catingub's (The Kahuna, himself)"After Hours." Catingub also plays alto sax, piano and arranges the various numbers!
And wait til you hear their version of Rosie's classic "Come On-A-My House" sung by Catingub with David Wells on tenor sax. Wow: What a great album. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Hawaiian Souvenir........2000-11-14
I bought this CD while holidaying in Honolulu last month. Every time I listen to it, 'Pearly Shells' and 'Blue Hawaii' conjure up fond memories of Hawaiian paradise. It was raining in Melbourne when I stepped off the plane, but this CD takes me back and makes everything alright. I love it!!
Score one for the Big Kahuna!.......2000-01-04
Yes, it's true. The saxes are out of tune on a couple of songs. I, for one, can live with that. This CD is awesome! The band can swing with the best of them (and I've compared this CD to Basie's band with Sinatra singing and the 1964 Woody Herman band). The band plays with an unmatched energy level and has all the right stuff, i.e., a drummer that plays with intensity, enthusiasm and technique; a lead trumpeter with a sound as big as a house (and great range); world class sax solos from Da Big Kahuna and David Wells; and to top it off, a nice recording thanks to the Skywalker Sound studio. As a follower of Matt's career from the early days (with Louie B.), I can say this is the best thing the "Baby BeBopper," I mean, "Da Big Kahuna" has ever done. And that is no small accomplishment!
A cyclone of Swing.......1999-10-27
Wow! Man! Whew! Oh does this band smoke! It creates a remarkably buoyant feeling. It's not really "Hawaiian Swing" though---rather it's the Hawaii that a 1961 Las Vegas Tiki Lounge would conjure up. The musicality and dynamics are stunning. My only tech complaint is that the sax section has an intonation problem often bedeviling sax sections (but not as bad as on George Gee's live CD). Count Basie never would have let that through. Big Kahuna is a fabulous vocalist---the best of any I've heard today (curiously, with a whiff of Jello Biafra). Of the crop of contemporary Swing dance bands, this band rockets to the top. How about relocating from SF to Maui, guys? Now that would be paradise.

The Greatest-On His Worst Day.......2005-11-30
I was conditioned to believe that nobody can beat Jackie Wilson
as a singer/entertainer by an uncle who knew Jackie's manager and
once sort of "acted" as a bodyguard for the great singer at New York's Apollo Theatre;apparently it was impossible to keep females away from the stage.Like my uncle,I just don't think anyone does it better. And for all the "Irishmen" out there, check out Jackie's version of 'Danny Boy' on this album.
Jackie Wilson At His Best.......2005-11-30
Jackie Wilson was the consummate artist: a voice that was as smooth as honey on moon beams, gravity-defying dance steps and great looks. He was Elvis before there was an Elvis. As a youngster, I saw many of his incredible performances at the Apollo--shows that represent some of the best memories of my life. Unfortunately, this is Jackie's only live album. For those not fortunate to have witnessed his live performance, I simply say it was unlike any other. This album, my all-time favorite, represents a nice sample of the broad spectrum of musical genres he mastered. No one, including Elvis, could touch him. When you saw Jackie, or heard his voice, you had to believe in God--for talent like his could come from no other source.
The Real Deal!!!.......2004-08-03
This record is one of the greatest live records ever made by an R&B Artist. It is well recorded and it ranks right up there with James Brown at the Apollo and BB King at the Regal. The listener will get an authentic taste of the greatest soul performer that ever lived. I used to go to the Regal Theater often in my younger days and I caught many a show by this man. The only person who ever came near Jackie in performance (voice and dance steps)is Michael Jackson. Jackie needed no pyrotechnics, dancing girls or backup singers, he was the whole package by himself. Check out St. James Infirmary, That's Why I Love You So and my favorite song on this record, This Is My Beloved and you will know who the real king of soul was. I have a lot of records but this one is special. So was Jackie Wilson.

A Tour de Force!.......2002-01-19
This is a "must-hear" for any Connie Francis fan! She has been my favorite singer for many years. I first heard this "live" album on LP and was very happy to discover it has been re-released on CD. It was recorded in 1960--early in her career--and it is a wonderful study in first-rate "supper club" performance. You can hear the audience's reactions to her every sung or spoken line and can experience the atmosphere of the legendary Copa, right down to the tinkling of glasses and audience chatter. If you close your eyes and listen, you can almost imagine the smoky room and a gorgeous Connie Francis holding court! It's just like being at a front table the night the show was recorded. I am a professional jazz and cabaret singer myself, and I often re-play this album to get a feel for how I should properly pace a show. Connie's pure and powerful voice, incredible rapport with audiences, impeccable taste, fabulous phrasing and overall enthusiasm for every song she sings make her number-one in my book!
You Are There.......2000-02-16
One of the shortest albums on record, and one of the worst-recorded (M-G-M Records did miserable remote work), "Connie at the Copa" nevertheless is totally captivating because of the performer. Connie Francis, who clearly had studied Bobby Darin very very closely, turns in a show biz performance which ranks right up there with the very best. There's some Sophie Tucker in here, and some Ethel Merman, a little Garland, a bit of Fanny Brice and a whole lot of Al Jolson. In a performer so young, really just beginning out in the adult field, what you hear on this recording is simply amazing.
An excellent collection of songs by an excellent artist........1999-08-08
This cd gives us a glimpse of the many facets of Connie's talent, from the her heart-rending version of Mama to her swinging versions of Old Man Mose, and Smack Dab in the Middle. She sings in Italian, Jewish and English. Listening to this cd makes me wish I had been there at the Copa when Connie was performing these songs.
Listening to this, I felt like I was "front row...center".......1999-08-06
Whoever says that Connie Francis was nothing but a late 50s rock-n-roll wannabe needs to take a risk and buy this CD. You won't be sorry. What a class act. I remember her from the early days as a kid and although enamered by her physical presence never cared much for her music. I bought this CD for nostaligic reasons not really thinking I would be that impressed. Guess what folks? I was absolutely amazed at what this gal can do. Connie Francis can swing! Connie Francis can perform with the best of 'em and really has a good time as well. I have played this CD 15 times in the past several weeks and have had others listen to it also.
I think if enough people find out about this CD she may have yet another legion of fans clammoring to get more of her music. Whether it's a rock'n'roll effort, some ethnic concept album, an LP full of ballads or a concept LP like THE WEDDING CAKE, listen to her once again for the first time. She'll move you like no Madonna or Mariah or Whitney ever could.
Versatile!.......1999-04-01
This was Connie's first Copa and NYC appearance. Connie's performance is amazing when one considers her tender age at the time. Connie appealed to all audiences, and this CD idicates her ability to capture the sophisticated adult audience. Her greatest hits captured all markets. This Copa appearance, along with the release of her Italian Favorites album, marked a major turning point in the spectacular career of Connie Francis. A very young star handling the Jolsen Medley so competently. Her swinging versions of Ol Man Mose and Smack Dab In The Middle are first rate Connie. Her rendition of Mama was a just released million seller at the time, and has become her evergreen, unable to leave any stage without performing it. It All Depends On You sounds reminiscent of the time this song was written. There's none better than the great Connie Francis, and this live recording is just one reflection of this.
