Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Gosford Park Sound Track.......2007-03-30

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars One the best soundtracks out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-06

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

The second volume of the master Warner Bros. cartoon composer's work downplays the head-spinning montage of the first in favor of just-as-head-spinning complete scores. They aren't from the studio's best-known cartoons but from some of Stalling's most impressive tempo-warping, all-systems-go pieces, augmented by a few mini-pieces that illustrate the way he could transform barely familiar show tunes and classical themes into wild, rubbery jokes. Even without images, Stalling could make an orchestra suggest a "Flea-Ridden Sheep Dog" in 24 seconds flat and run enough changes on Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races" to match every mood in a Foghorn Leghorn cartoon. The head-snapping reversals of his scores anticipate much later avant-garde music. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars The Carl Stalling Project Vols 1 & 2.......2007-01-11

Are the names Mel Blanc, I. Freleng or Chuck Jones familiar to you? Then you will get a charge out of these albums as they remind you of Warner Brothers cartoons you saw. I even used these albums instead of "spooky music" for the trick-or-treaters at Halloween, and got appreciative comments from the parents who recognized the music. Definitely worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Better Stalling's CD.......2006-05-09

As well as Stalling Project Part I, These recordings are more modern fidelity, less classic and more musical techniques. The improvisations appreciate me more than Part I. I like all tracks especially one from "Zoom and Bored" Salute Maestro!!!!

3 out of 5 stars The Carl Stalling Project Volume 2.......2005-09-12

More music from Warner Brother Cartoons 1936 to 1958.
Carl Stalling was one of the foremost composers of music for cartoons and wrote virtually all of the scores for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. This is a compilation of some complete soundtracks and other snippets. In my opinion, this disk is not quite as well done as "The Carl Stalling Project Volume I."

4 out of 5 stars A nice follow up.......2003-03-09

I really did like the slice-and-dice format of the first disc : I think it helped keep that cartoon zaniness without the visuals. I would recommend both volumes - I listen to them alot while I'm programming!

5 out of 5 stars Now, every time I watch cartoons, I listen to the music!.......2001-08-07

Carl Stalling. We all know who he is, but we don't know that we know. Who is he? The guy who did cartoon background music for Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies for more than 20 years, that's who. Maybe you're thinking, "Oh, come on! Cartoon background music??! How good could something so trivial be?!" The answer to that question is.. VERY. Very entertaining. I just love Carl Stalling's great "scores". When you take away the context of it's being CARTOON music and just sit and listen to the damn thing, it's WONDERFUL music in and of itself! He goes from violins and a piano playing "agitato" simultaneously to a single oboe note and back again in five seconds. Not only that. He does that and, as random as it may sound, he mannages to segue it together beautifully. Now, every time I watch cartoons, the thing I pay most attention to is what aural miracles Mr. Stalling sneaked in. Maybe, after listening to this, you will too. If anything will change after you listen to this, it would be that you'll never think of cartoon music as trivial again........That's a GOOD thing.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

In his thirties and no longer the poster boy of the post-grunge generation, Evan Dando returns a wiser and seemingly chastened man on Baby I'm Bored, his first studio album since the Lemonheads' 1996 finale, Car Button Cloth. His well documented difficulties behind him, it's heartening that Dando has returned with a set of genuinely lovely songs. Visceral, vital, and yearning, Baby I'm Bored boasts a wealth of gems. The opener, "Repeat," is vulnerable yet quietly resolute; "It Looks Like You" is as spectral and plangent as the Byrds; "Hard Drive" rehabilitates that widely despised genre, the list song. "The Same Thing," on the other hand, hints at mental turmoil ("I can't believe how far I slipped"), while "Why Do You Do This to Yourself?" berates a kamikaze party animal over the most muted! of acoustic strums. There is resolution in "All My Life," which gratefully delineates newer, sounder perspectives ("All my life I thought I needed the things I didn't need at all"), while the giddy, bucolic closer, "In the Grass All Wine Colored," is as pristine and pure as a baby's conscience. Members of Calexico, Giant Sand, Come, and Spacehog chip in support, but the focus is fully on Dando, an artist reborn, restored, and far from bored. --Ian Gittins

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars VERY NICE.......2007-04-03

Evan Dando steps up here with his first solo release. The sound is great and seems to stray from the lemonheads sound quite a bit. Singer-songwriter jems captured with a good backing band who doesn't over-power Dando's already perfect simple pop songs. The "alt-country" sound which the Lemonheads picked-up with "Lovey" is apparant here, but done in a different way. The sound is generally mellow and rocked-out. Get this homies.

5 out of 5 stars I'm In The Grass All Wine Colored to Infinity.......2006-08-27

While some have been critical of this album for numerosu reasons, mainly that it is post-recovery, I still find everythign Evan Dando touches to be gold. The songs are pure musical perfection, and Evan still holds the same brilliant musical spirit as ever before. I have listened to Evan for many, many years, and a bad Dando album is till 100 times better than anythign else for me. I love it, and think it is a great album. "All my Life", and "In the Grass Wine Colored" are classics, to be sure. No matter what Evan sings, I find myself unable to shake it from ny head many hours later. Thanks, Evan, and keep writing. I have been through addicition, drug years, punk/power trash, etc, right there with you, and out the other side I am glad to have musicians like you blessing my ears.

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2006-01-01

Ive seen Evan's' solo act as well as The Lemonheads.I grew up with all the Lemonheads albums, and was fairly optimistic about this release. The lyrics are generic for the most part. Its sad to see Evan's songwriting skills have been so damaged by his self destruction. The album has about three great songs though.

2 out of 5 stars Baby it's Boring.......2004-12-15

Alas, I never heard the Lemonheads and perhaps they were something I would of liked. But after hearing former frontman Evan Dandos' solo project I somehow don't think so.
It's not that there is anything horribly bad in this record, but thats it's problem, there isn't much of anything in this record. The songs sort of plod along in an unchangeing dirgelike rhythm (you could tap your foot to this entire record at more or less the same speed). The music is unremarkable unadorned chord strumming and the lyrics are quasi-wistful innocuous sad sack garbage that I seriously couldn't remember a line of five minutes after the record ended. In fact, I couldn't hum a bar from one of these songs right now and I listened to it this morning.
In short, unless you suffer from a severe case of insomnia, pass this record over for something else.

3 out of 5 stars For the grad student in all of us..........2004-10-24

Well, at least you can't accuse Dando of not growing along with his fans. If you rocked - kind of, sort of - to the Lemonheads when you were in your early twenties, now you can mellow out in your early thirties with Baby I'm Bored. None of these songs are particularly memorable but they capture the tone of pre-midlife-crisis angst perfectly: not so much depressed as resigned. Sure, life isn't as exciting as it was when you were back in the dorms but you know, uh, it's the only game around. Anyway, perfect for that moving-out-of-the-loft party you've got next weekend in Williamsburg.

    5 out of 5 stars Hit potential.......2001-03-08

I think "You're only Hunan" could be a big hit, if radio stations knew about it. It's a great song. It's even better after you realize it's about left over chinese food.

5 out of 5 stars Punk Snot Dead!.......2000-08-17

I really like this record. Midget Toss and East Bay of Urden Bay are the best tracks. I'm too young to see many bands, but I listen to a lot of music and this record is cool. My friend first told me about the Frustrators cuz of Mike and Green Day, but I like the Frustrators way more than Green Day. THIS EP ROCKS

    1 out of 5 stars Insulting!.......2000-06-27

I don't feel how you can state that "The Great American Midget Toss" is humorous. I feel its a very degrading song, especially when it talks about throwing another minority individual. Would it be funny if they sang about tossing any other minority individual? Its a disgrace to those who have dwarfism, and its a disgrace to parents who have children with dwarfism. Would it also be funny if they sang about tossing those with Downs Syndrome, MDA, or any other disability? As a band, they should have used better wisdom and knowledge before they wrote a very degrading song.

5 out of 5 stars Cross & Ross move beyond T2.......2007-07-16

This is a '72 classic I've searched for for years. Working at Music Millennium in the 70s exposed me to great
music only the lucky few could hear-Bored Civilians was played on KINK FM and others in the growing FM market, but not enough for domestic release.
Long tasty jazz-tinged jams fit early FM and these guys astound in digital format(ain't it grand when old virgin
vinyl junkies can appreciate cds?). The Last Ocean Rider and Story To A Friend continue T2s trend to expand
their audiences experiences this way. Imagine a stoney FM dj lower register tag at 9PM or 6AM-Cross & Ross
    shoulda been everywhere.
Great packaging Si-Wan, you've got a gem, thanks.

4 out of 5 stars This CD Rocks.......2004-05-23

Every song on this album is excellent rock/punk....very catchy..high energy. There are a couple of slow songs and they're very good. Believe me, "American Psycho" is just the tip of the iceberg. I love this band. I love their sound. You'll love this CD. Why aren't they more famous?

5 out of 5 stars The peak of a career... for now..........2003-04-20

Yes, this is Treble Charger's best, for now. They had a chance to do better with the fallow-up, Detox, but they couldn't. So, to this day, this is the best Treble Charger album you can find. It's everything Maybe It's Me was only better. Catchier, more melodic... It was their biggest hit in Canada and their best chance to take on the USA, but they didn't. I won't talk much about that, but I'll say that Treble Charger deserved more.

The beginning of the album is where Treble Charger rocks the most. Brand New Low (second single), American Psycho (first single) and Buisness (third single) are probably the catchiest Treble Charger songs ever. They are the kind of energetic songs that they are now known for. Cheat Away is a nice ballad that reminds me of Red of Ever She Flows. Funny and Favorite Worst Enemy are of the same kind as the first 3. The rest of the songs are really slow compared to what we've been used to, but they still have Treble Charger written all over them. Another Dollar and Just What They Told me are the ones that really lets us hear the singer's voice (one of them anyway, Greig and Bill are both singers).

Treble Charger are at their best live, but they still shine on their albums. They are energetic and catchy. It's a real shame that Simple Plan, a band that can only be described as a joke, is getting more attention than them.

5 out of 5 stars Treble Charger - Wide Awake Bored.......2003-01-01

I just got this CD and I love it, the lyrics are really thought-provoking. My favourite tracks are American Psycho, Brand New Low, Favorite Worst Enemy, and Business.

    2 out of 5 stars Too Mainstream!.......2001-04-27

Treble Charger has grown as a band but it may not have been for the better. With Wide Awake Bored they enter into the mainstream of "rock" so to speak. They had their own type of style but now they just sound like any other band out there. Sure, you may like songs like "American Psycho" but that is why everyone likes them now is because of this tune. Have a listen to the other CDs that Treble Charger release prior to this one. The three really good ones prior to this are "Self-Title","NC-17", and "Maybe It's Me" If you have a chance to listen to these you'll respect Treble Charger's prior music taste. It seems they have tried to enter a realm of artists who change their look and sound just to suit what's hip. They were a great band once and can be again. If you're interested in picking up a few of these CDs e-mail me at (e-mail address)

    Thanks :)

    4 out of 5 stars a little something-something.......2002-08-06

Having never heard this band before, I opened the jewel case with some trepidation. However, I was not seriously disappointed. Consider the musicians: former members of the Stooges and the MC5. Add one unique vocalist. Insert into the late '70s music scene and stir vigorously. On the surface, DAM sounds like the Stooges with a female vocalist. But I have listened to the CD several times, and it's growing on me....Major complaint: It's too damn short! Only seven tracks. Now I'm thinking about the Silver Wedding Anniversary...

5 out of 5 stars Bored Generation Review by NOFX on the Web!.......1998-12-20

This compilation is pretty good... it features a great song by NOFX called "Drugs are Good" which can also be found on the HOFX 12".

Other bands with cool songs are Pennywise (doing a cover of the Circle Jerks), Rancid, and Brett Gurewitz (formerly of Bad Religion and CEO of Epitaph) with his new band the Daredevils.

I've seen the multimedia portion of this disc and there are a few cool skate and snowboard videos with music in the background... the only problem is that I couldn't get it working with my CDROM setup. Oh well.

Good CD, but a little expensive if you're just getting it for the music portion.

    Rating: 7/10

    3 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.........nah.......1998-12-17

This could of been a really good cd if you like punk. But no they had to taint it with the likes of rap and heavy metal. The Rancid, Nofx, and Pennywise songs are all awesome. Too bad they were wasted on such a loser cd.
