Customer Reviews:
It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10
This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).
The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.
Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.
I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.
If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."
If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.
I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.
I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.
My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20
Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour
but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..
An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17
Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.
In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.
OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25
Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.
It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14
I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.
This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

Joan Baez.......2007-03-16
Haunting voice, lots of Bob Dylan tunes. I miss folkand this reminds why.
One of her very best releases, even better now..........2007-01-26
I confess I tired of Joan about 20 years ago, and most of the albums I have sampled since she left Vanguard for A & M and other labels leave me cold. But this one is uniformly excellent, and the three added songs only make the original a better bargain. She was in excellent voice, had superb instrumental backing, and a wonderful variety of songs. I can recall playing this a couple of times a week throughout the 70's. "Farewell Angelina" is the one I sang along with more often than the others, but all the performances are great.
Even better remastered then I remembered.......2006-08-18
We had this one on LP and are so glad to have it now on CD.
We played it over and over, and the songs ran thru
my head for days.
Vintage Joan!.......2005-10-08
I have the LP of this album and it is almost worn thru! I decided that if it was available on CD I would get it as a birthday present to myself! I found this to be one of the best purchases I have made lately. The remastering of the original songs is perfect and the bonus tracks are great! Joan's voice is still clear and sweet and very easy to listen to. Her voice got a more raspy sound on later albums. The bonus tracks were the icing on the cake for me. She covers a wide range of folk songs, from Guthrie's "Ranger's Comand" to "Rock Salt and Nails" by Bruce 'Utah' Phillips. It is interesting to note that the people who made the labels for the album did not know that there is a substance known as Rock Salt that is often used in shotguns as a 'varment load' and therefore list it as "Rock, Salt and Nails!" No matter what you call it I found it to be one of the most haunting songs I have ever heard. All in all, if you like Joan Baez and/or folk music this is a must have. Her version of "One too many mornings" brings back vivid memories of the '60s!
Joan Baez again.......2005-08-22
This is still reasonably early Joan Baez. Her voice is strong and clear, the songs have a real folk quality. This is an "enjoyment" album. I am not belittling the compilation when I describe it as a great album for playing in the car. The miles just roll by.

Leonard Bernstein occupies a unique position in the music world for his protean, multi-faceted talents. His ability to draw on and absorb every cultural influence made him the ultimate eclectic, yet he eventually forged a style that was unmistakably his own. This record, which includes vocal, choral and instrumental pieces, some never recorded, performed or published, demonstrates that his Jewish heritage played a formative, lasting, decisive role in this process. The earliest, Psalm 148 (sung in English), written when he was 17, is steeped in an ultra-romantics style, especially Wagner's; it hardly contains a hint of the later Bernstein, but its innocent sweetness is infinitely touching. The longest, Halil, is a virtuoso piece for flute with piano and percussion, written 1981 in memory of a 19-year-old Israeli flutist killed 1973 in the Yom Kippur War. Also written for specific occasions and friends are Silhouette for Jennie Tourel's birthday and Three Wedding Dances for the marriage of Adolph Greene and Phyllis Newman. Excerpts from longer works include At My Wedding from Arias and Barcarolles, a description of a young fiddler playing for a wedding that is both funny and affecting, sung in Yiddish, a chorus from the ballet The Dybbuk, a section of Concerto for Orchestra. These, like several sacred selections--prayers, invocations, hymns of thanks and praise for various parts of the Service--are sung in Hebrew. The most substantial is Hashkiveinu, a prayer for peace, commissioned by the Cantor of a New York synagogue, for tenor solo, chorus and organ, featuring call and response, cantorial chanting and very daring harmonies and tonal juxtapositions. Bernstein later recycled some of this material for other, very different compositions, like films and musicals, perhaps indicating that he considered this style the connecting thread of his creative life. The performances are uniformly excellent; Réaux, Blochwitz and the pianists stand out. --Edith Eisler
Album Description
"What are the Jewish roots I long for?" wrote Leonard Bernstein as he pondered one of his many Jewish-inspired compositions. This unique collection of rarely heard worksincluding several world-premiere recordingsreveals many possible answers to Bernstein's question. Triumphal processions, mysterious invocations, intimate Jewish character portraits, rousing dances; all of these musical offerings present the great eclectic imagination of one of America's foremost 20th century composers.

Foxfire.......2006-03-26
I personally thought the movie was great. I never saw it when it came out, but my daughter gave it to me to watch. I usually watch it once a day. Brings back memories when I was a teenager. Also love the soundtrack, esp. about five songs. Great movie.
Hang On To Your Friends.......2005-12-29
I purchased the movie and loved every minute of it. I am 55 years old and it made my heart feel sad. I lost track of all my friends I had in the 60's - 70's during the Woodstock era. It made me feel that I have to tell my nieces and friends kids to never lose touch of their friends. In the end you will discover how valuable they were. Angelina Jolies' best performance and also Hedy Burress. They were all fantastic. The soundtrack is excellent. For the price it is well worth it. Rent the movie and learn from it.
foxfire soundtrack.......2005-10-03
i absolutely love this soundtrack.
i believe it can make you find a certain something down inside of you.
it really reached out to me.
it touched me very close to my heart. i have gone through some of those senarios that the girls went through in that movie.
so the songs really do set the mood for it!
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
from a 16 year old! HAHAHAHA :P
im immature
Great movie, great soundtrack.......2003-11-04
I first saw this movie recently. The soundtrack enhances the drama when you're watching this film. Good ol' Jolie really gave a great performance as well as Heddy Burress. It's a touching film, but also sad. It defines the true meaning of what friendship is. No matter how bad it got for these girls, they stuck by each others side. My favorite scene was when Jolie started giving herself a tattoo and everyone in the room was deeply touched by the fact that she would permanently carve the memory of that night into her flesh. So after that they all requested the same tattoo. It's a rare but meaningful kind of female bonding. They loved each other and would do anything for one another. The best song is You by Candlebox, which is basically what the move was about. "I'd die for you, pain in my heart is for you."
Great Movie and Soundtrack.......2001-12-06
All I can say is wow. This movie was the best ever, and everytime I put this CD in I just get a natural high from it! It's great! If you loved the movie you have to have the soundtrack.

Angelina Sings and prays the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Open your hearts to Our Lord's Divine Mercy. "America's Voice of an Angel" along with soothing Classical Guitar by Giovanni DeChario. A beautiful devotional gift for any occasion.
Customer Reviews:
Love her voice.......2006-05-23
Angelina has a beautiful voice! Just wanted to add to the other recommendations, though. Kitty Cleveland has a BEAUTIFUL voice, and her version with a children's choir is my favorite--even over the one from EWTN.
PRIEST'S REVIEW, NUMBER TWO.......2006-04-06
Let me amend my earlier review. (See Father Harlan's "Priest's Review.")
I was praising Angelina's voice, but I didn't necessarily mean this particular album (Chaplet of Divine Mercy). I happen to agree with L.J. Toms, that the two EWTN versions of the sung Chaplet are THE BEST!
If you want to hear Angelina at her best, listen to "Mary's Way of the Cross," and "Angelina Prays the Rosary."
Also, please be advised, we are all talking here about Angelina from Franciscan University of Steubenville, NOT the other Latin recording artist named Angelina, who sings Spanish dance music!
Voice of an Angel, perhaps, but..........2005-12-20
I guess I'll express the minority opinion on this. She does, indeed, have an absolutely beautiful voice - pure and angelic. My disappointment is that the music is rather dark, sharp and unmelodic. I was really looking for a rendition of the Divine Mercy aired on EWTN twice a day, which is a sweet, passionate song that I can't stop singing. My suggestion - buy Angelina's Rosary CD, but get the Divine Mercy CD from EWTN.com or marian.org (look for the one with Trish Short). Sorry, Angelina, your voice is truly spectacular, I just wish the song were better.
Highly Recommended........2004-05-18
It is true, Angels do sing and she has the voice of an Angel.
Priest's Review of Angelina C.D........2003-08-24
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!
You won't believe your ears!
Sounds like Space Shuttle astronauts stuck a microphone out the window and captured the voice of an ANGEL singing!!

Best recording of "Polovtzian Dances".......2007-07-20
This recording is thrilling, especially with the pace, volume, the raw energy of both choir and orchestra. I'm going to give away my cd's which include a namby-pamby American or European version of these exciting dances. This recording proves that you need Russian ensembles to really get the most out of Russian music. This is the way Borodin's music should be heard. I've been listening to inferior recordings of it for fifty plus years. Perhaps Naxos will release this version of Prince Igor in its entirety....
A Great Intro to a Lesser Known Opera.......2006-02-14
Borodin's PRINCE IGOR is a large, grand spectacle of Russian opera in the tradition of BORIS GODOUNOV. The robust overture is known to concert goers and the melodies of its Polovtsian Dances would be among classical music's better known tunes. Today the opera is largely unknown outside of Russia except by those who own the complete versions of the work (EMI and Sony both include the work in their catalogues). For those who would like a sampling of the opera, this disc from Naxos fits the bill. It includes the overture, the dance scenes with chorus (a treat for those only familiar with the orchestral renditions), the Polovtsian march, and a sampling of arias, one each for tenor, mezzo, baritone, and bass.
If the expression that water only makes us thirst for wine is true, then this disc is the water that makes a listener thirsty for the wine of a complete recording, with the soloists of this set, its orchestra and chorus. We get a sense that all involved are familiar with the opera. The Ukraine National Radio Symphony under Theodore Kuchar's direction has a fulsome sound that is appropriate for the music. The soloists seem at home with the music they perform as well. My only objection is that some of the great choral scenes of this opera are not included on the disc, perhaps in place of "In the Steppes of Central Asia" which concludes the recording, but since we hear a fine rendition of the work, it's not a major criticism.
Highlights of Borodin's Prince Igor, and More.......2005-09-25
There are purists who scoff at highlights recordings of operas. But my experience is that when there is an opera that I'm not familiar with, it sometimes helps to hear the highlights first and make a judgment about its overall quality in order to decide whether to spend the sometimes huge cost of obtaining the complete opera. As it happens, I have a full recording of Borodin's 'Prince Igor,' but I also have become a fan of Theodore Kuchar and the orchestra he records with so often, the National Radio Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. And I knew that there are some fabulous voices coming out of Ukraine these days. Hence this recording. And what a delight it is!
The highlights included here are the Overture, Galitsky's first act aria, the Dance of the Polovtsian Maidens from Act II, Konchakovna's Act II aria, Vladimir's Act II Cavatina, Igor's Act II aria, the choral version of the Polovtsian Dances (different, and more effective, than the all-orchestral version we tend to hear) and then the Polovtsian March from Act III. This totals about fifty minutes. The CD is then filled out with an excellent performance of Borodin's 'In the Steppes of Central Asia.'
I must say that the singers here do not disappoint; both the chorus and the various soloists are excellent. Galitsky is sung by Taras Shtonda, a bass whose voice has enough ping (deriving from his fast vibrato) to give the evil Galitsky a bit of a nasty edge (appropriately so). Konchakovna's exotic sounding Cavatina is sung by the wonderful rich-voiced contralto Angelina Shvachka. Prince Vladimir, her lover, is sung by the 23-year-old tenor, Dmytro Popov. He is headed for big things, I suspect. His caressing tone in the softer portions of the aria is very pleasing. The title role is sung by bass-baritone Mykola Koval, the most established member of the cast; he's been singing at the Ukraine National Opera for more than twenty years. His melancholic aria is sung with dramatic thrust, but there is an incipient wobble in the voice. The orchestra and chorus give us exciting and characterful performances of the orchestral and choral sections.
The transliterated Russian words of the arias and their English translations are included in the booklet. There is also a fairly detailed synopsis provided.
I suspect this would be a good buy for someone who is not familiar with Borodin's opera or for someone who knows some of the music but doesn't want to invest in a full recording. (Naxos some time ago also released a historic 1950s recording from the Bolshoi of the full opera on 3 CDs . It is in mono, of course, but is a fine account for relatively modest cost.)

A GLORIOUS RECORDING..........2004-03-09
This is an absolutely beautiful recording. Of the eleven tracks, four are Bob Dylan covers, one is a Donovan (Leitch) cover, three are traditional Anglo-American ballads, two are more contemporary folk songs, one of which is Peter Seeger's "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" sung in German, and there even a lovely song that Ms. Baez sings in French.
The Dylan songs are set to great effect by the interpretation given them by Ms. Baez. Clearly, she has a healthy respect for Dylan's songwriting abilities, treating each one of his songs as if it were a jewel and her voice the precious setting into which it is being placed. She does likewise with Donovan's cover song.
The traditional folk ballads are, as always, exquisitely and simply sung by Ms. Baez in her sweet, true, clear soprano. The purists will be more than satisfied by her interpretation of these songs. This is the Joan Baez that first rose to fame and came to the attention of an adoring public.
My favorites on this CD are the Dylan covers, the traditional folk ballads, and the German version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone". This is a must have recording for those who are fans of Ms. Baez and for those who simply love music that is a thing of beauty.
One of her best as she moved from "trad" to "rad".......2002-04-13
Several Dylan songs and a few suprises, all of them done well, although not being a linguist, I can't judge the quality of her German pronunciations as another reviewer has. All I know is I bought it when it first came out on vinyl, kept it for 25 years, and played it at least a couple times each of those years.
CREAM OF EARLY BAEZ.......2001-06-20
This is a great album! I've never been bothered by her German and French accents and I think the songs are superb and sensitively interpreted. It's very folky and Satisfied Mind even sounds a bit country-ish to me, but this album is still a sheer pleasure to listen to. My favourites include Farewell Angelina, Colours, Satisfied Mind, the German version of Where Have All The Flowers Gone? and A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. In fact this album is more enjoyable than some of her later "art-song" excursions of the 1980s an early 1990s. If you're looking for good songs well-interpreted, you cannot go wrong with this album. It's a classic.
Pauvre M. Nielsen.......2001-05-02
I think it is shame that Mr. Nielsen gives more credence to Joan Baez's lack of accent than he does to her voice. I owned this album in 1966 and had the distinct pleasure of hearing Joan Baez sing in Monterrey. Her voice has never failed to thrill and it has always been a representive of the spirit of the time as well as being timeless in its purity. I own several of her albums but this is my favourite.
joan sings DYLAN well.......2000-09-18
Joan's Dylan covers are always great, but I actually bought the album to hear her versions of Pauvre Ruteboeuf and Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind. I really didn't care for either of them because her pronunciation and accent was off with the French and German, so it came off to me as a bit pretentious. However, Farewell, Angelina is still worth getting for the Dylan covers. I often prefer her versions over the originals.
