Faith No More are virtually impossible to categorize; they blend metal and rap elements in a mix that becomes seamless on The Real Thing, whose hit single, "Epic," is a perfect combination of these disparate genres. Other high points are the thrashy "Surprise! You're Dead!," an excellent cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," the funk-layered-with-keyboards "Falling to Pieces," and the soft but spooky "Zombie Eaters." With the addition of vocalist Mike Patton, the band secured a highly talented frontman and skilled lyricist. The Real Thing is one of those rare albums that is impossible to quantify but astoundingly good. More accessible than the follow-up Angel Dust, it's also the first album new Faith No More listeners should get. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
badly in need of re-mastering .......2007-06-19
The album itself is without question five stars. The one star is for the HORRIBLE sound quality.
What is it?.......2007-01-10
Sure, this album has been out a long time, and it may even seem dated if you weren't born when it came out. But it's so damn good. I hadn't heard it in more than 10 years and just wanted to check it out again, to see if it really was as good as i remember. The short answer: you damn straight it's good. It's freaky-deaky! Heavy and soft, loud and quiet, chocolate and kiwis.
Go get it.
Faith restored.......2006-12-24
In the midst of near band melt down and free for all, FNM fired their lead singer and brought in friend Mike Patton to pen lyrcis to their album that would be known as The Real Thing. Mixing Mike's love for vocal ranges and styles (everything from rapping to just rocking out like a true rock frontman) with the band's most accessible sound to date (and looking back now, THE most accessible period), FNM created a staple sound/album of the alternative scene, mixing some true music styles from rock to rap to a pre-acid like jazz sound. While some reviewers will try to sit there and say this is THE ALT ALBUM and Nirvana's Nevermind is a St. Anger for it's genre(?), FNM's The Real Thing is one of the cornerstones of the Alternative genre that evolved into Grunge (sorry but while TRT is great... Nevermind DID change an entire rock world by going back to the roots of rock that were long forgotten and bogged down by hair spray and power ballads, destorying what was left in the wake of GNR's AFD).
There is nothing much to say but Faith No More's The Real Thing is just a rocking album for the masses.
It's still fun!.......2006-11-10
I LOVED Faith No More back in the day and owned most of their albums. My old cassette version of this got eaten in the player and I didn't replace it for the longest time. Finally got around to getting it on CD and realized how much I missed the band and the album! They were pretty groundbreaking for the time. Saw them in concert and loved them even more. I can't talk all technicla with you about styles, revolutionary sounds and whatnot, I just know what I like!
One word, Genius........2006-09-11
This album is pure genius. The blend of music that this album has is simply out of this world. To here the totally different contrasts on the album, listen to the funk "Falling to Pieces" and to the metal and darkness of "The Real Thing". This truly a masterpiece of an album. If you like music, i recommend this album. One of the best of all time and CERTAINLY FOM's best.

A good value.......2007-05-17
I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.
The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25
This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.
Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02
Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.
A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23
For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.
Uplifts your soul, takes your mind into the heavens.......2006-01-06
I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections. The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. Don't pass this one up

The American psychedelic movement was bound to produce unexpected progeny--including the 1970s, which began as a mainstream attempt to absorb the "free love," recreational drug use, and sartorial eccentricities of the previous decade. But there were parallel repercussions elsewhere in the world, and nowhere was this phenomenon more fascinating than in West Africa. As LPs became cheaper and readily available, local musicians began to incorporate the fuzz and wah-wah guitar vamps, cheesy organ riffs, blatting saxes, and fat, funky bass lines of sixties R&B plus Santana-influenced Latin rhythms and the extended, destination-free guitar solos typical of the San Francisco sound. These were not emulated by rote but freely adapted by younger Africans, mostly students, whose own acoustic traditions had already been transformed by exposure to urban technology. The resulting amalgams, whether they evolved in Benin, Nigeria, Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, or Mali, remain incredibly lively, funny, inventive, and surprising. --Christina Roden

Neat Collection.......2006-12-16
I won't say this is the best "world music" CD I've ever heard, or even the best Luaka Bop production, but it is very good and very unusual. Let's say certainly well above average - as are the lengths of many of the songs. The music is hard to compare to anything else... maybe psychedelic reggae? Maybe not. Anyway, if you're broad-minded, musically speaking, chances are you'll like it, so buy it.
Love it love it love it love it.......2006-09-21
This is a great album. I bought the first week it came out and still have not tired of it a year and a half later. Get it! You will put its songs on mix tapes and people will think you're awesome for having found these rare but outstanding songs!
Funky and Original.......2006-08-10
This is a great CD. Even richer and more nuanced than I expected.
Real Music.......2006-04-19
This is the best 12 song compilation cd I've ever experienced in my life. Anyone who votes anything less than 5 star is obviously a cheap wad or doesn't know anything about music.
Funky For the Money.......2005-10-19
If you like funk, or rock, or jazz, or just love good music you will like this CD. It is like a mix between James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Every song is amazing and they are all different. Sure you may not understand the language, but funk is international. Hands down worth the price.

Bo Bice, American Idol darling and Alabama babe magnet, had to have known he was taking a risk in naming his debut full-length The Real Thing. Up until now, those who weren't fans of the show and were introduced to Bice's heart-on-his-sleeve brand of southern rock through either his fall 2005 guest spot on Carlos Santana's All That I Am or his chart-topping turn on the single "Inside Your Heaven," also from 2005, may have been tempted to write him off as reality-show riffraff. The Real Thing--thanks in no small part to producer Clive Davis as well as Bice-boosters Richie Sambora, Jon Bon Jovi, Chad Kroeger (Nickelback), and Ben Moody (Evanescence)--redeems the hirsute, hard-charging rocker. Bice steps lively through a cavalcade of soaring guitars and top-drawer hooks, and he doesn't skimp on the belting--hear it on the full-flame lament "Nothing Without You" and also "Remember Me," an insistent rant sunk chest-deep in sincerity. If Bice sounds less earthy here than he did on the show--onstage he recalled the singer from the '60s band the Grass Roots to eerie effect at times--few will be disappointed. This is modern music with a Southern-man twist made irresistible by a bare-it-all guy who means it. The real thing, in other words. -Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
I listen to this CD EVERY day.......2007-07-20
I LOVE Bo Bice, and I LOVE this CD. I guess it's Pop/Rock really. I love the title track, The Real Thing. I keep it as my main song on MySpace, and everyone always tells me, "I love that song on your MySpace. I have to get Bo Bice's CD". And I say, "Your mean you haven't already?"
Let him sing his own songs, record company!.......2007-05-28
After listening to what Bo could do on "American Idol," especially the song he sung a capella, I decided to snatch up this album as soon as it hit the market. Egad! Where's the Bo I know?! I was certainly disappointed. After getting the album, I happened to watch an interview story where cameras followed Bo in the making of this thing. It was a terrible choice on the part of the studio/producer/record company/whoever's ultimate decision this was to not let Bo sing his own songs on this album. He's a great song-writer and can put his fantastic voice into his own songs with so much more heart than this album delivered. If you want just another album with so-so songs on it, go for it. If you want the real Bo, hope and pray that the undoubtedly stagnant sales from this album don't stop him from making a second album that demonstrates his true ability. I am not impressed with the square hole he got crammed into on this one.
Huge Disappointment.......2007-05-16
Every song on this album was a huge disappointment. Each track sounded like so many other mediocre songs out there already. I thought Bo prided himself on being a little different during the competition, but this album was anything but. It was watered down even for watered down music.
The Real Thing.......2007-03-29
Bo Bice should have won American Idol. We need a rocker idol. His first CD is a good one, his next one will be even better.
Disappointing.......2007-03-05
Just LOVED Bo on American Idol and couldn't wait for a CD. While his voice is excellent, thought too many of the same, slow love songs on this CD. Was hoping for a more upbeat country rock type CD.

Taj Mahal's been chasing the blues around the world for years, but rarely with the passion, energy, and clarity he brought to his first three albums. Taj Mahal, The Natch'l Blues and The Real Thing are the sound of the artist, who was born in 1942, defining himself and his music. On his self-titled 1967 debut, he not only honors the sound of the Delta masters with his driving National steel guitar and hard vocal shout, but ladles in elements of rock and country with the help of guitarists Ry Cooder and the late Jessie Ed Davis. This approach is reinforced and broadened by The Natch'l Blues. What's most striking is Mahal's way of making even the oldest themes sound as if they're part of a new era. Not just through the vigor of his playing--relentlessly propulsive, yet stripped down compared with the six-string ornamentations of the original masters of country blues--but through his singing, which possesses a knowing insouciance distinct to post-Woodstock counterculture hipsters. It's the voice of an informed young man who knows he's offering something deep to an equally hip and receptive audience.
Soon, Mahal turned his multicultural vision of the blues even further outward. The live 1971 set, The Real Thing, finds him still carrying the Mississippi torch, while adding overt elements of jazz and Afro-Caribbean music to its flame. But it's overreaching. His band sounds under-rehearsed, and the arrangements seem more like rough outlines. Nonetheless, these albums set the stage for Mahal's career. (For a condensed version, try the fine The Best of Taj Mahal.) Today, he continues to make fine fusion albums, like 1999's Kulanjan, with Malian kora master Toumani Diabate, and less exciting but still eclectic recordings with his Phantom Blues Band. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
A-MEN, brother reviewer..........2003-09-13
Yeah, man, the "official" reviewer just doesn't get it AT ALL. This is one of the best ROOTS recordings EVER - and I don't say that lightly. Remember...this is 1971...LIVE, a 2 LP recording, at the Fillmore...I mean, the Allman Brothers - WITH DUANE - did their recording that same year. Now, how many acts could have gotten away with playing a tune with nothing but a banjo and a TUBA, for cryin' out loud! ("Tom And Sally Drake")? Taj Mahal, that's who. Taj engages the audience as well as anyone ("Gimme some help...GIMME SOME! - You can do it...if you're jacked up to it...) and standouts here are the norm. "You're Goin' To Need Somebody On Your Bond" is the groover, with Taj 'gettin spiritual' with the blues, and doing the back and forth with the crowd. Also a highlight is "Ain't Gwine Whistle Dixie No Mo'", where every band member gets a piece of the action, and my spine tingles at the thought of John Simon groovin' on the piano, and John Hall doing a GREAT guitar solo, and ending, with Taj whistling over the many horns. No, if you don't get it, you don't get it...but I was 15...and I got it. This is Taj's moment in Time, Live - History, I believe it's called - and he grabs on and holds tight. Any fan of blues, jazz, roots, gospel, or African-American music History has to consider this a MUST HAVE CD. Period.
Taj Always Had His Own Style.......2003-09-13
This is an excellent Taj Mahal CD. The album is fun and relaxing and must have been a great show to see. The quality of the music is great considering it was taken from a live performance. Although, a few times on the CD when Taj is talking between songs, the sound drops very quiet for a short time but quickly shoots back up to a good volume. The use of horns is a great change on this album and the other musicians on the stage sound great throughout. This is a good CD which will spice up any blues collection by providing a sound different from most other blues albums.
This is it!.......2003-08-04
The "official" review doesn't take into account the power of this album as a whole. The chemistry is there, and this has the raw energy of the best blues. One of my favorite albums of all time.
BEGstore.com transaction review.......2002-10-22
BEGstore was perfect! Prompt shipping, clean packaging, and a free shipping upgrade! I'll do business with them again.
The Blues Rev Speaks.......2001-08-09
I completely wore out my original double LP album listening to The Real Thing. And "REAL" it is. This is my favorite Taj Mahal album and one of the top five of my favorite blues albums of all time, considering that my Blues LP and CD collection exceeds 350 albums. The ochestration of traditonal blues songs played with by a typical blues band coupled with the backing brass section of Mr. Howard Johnson and friends, is more powerful than a B-52 air raid. I'm going to purchase a second copy of this album for my archives because I know I'll wear out this CD before long.

didn't work for rehearsals.......2007-03-22
I used this CD to help me rehearse for the BIG production I was in, but it didn't match the libretto at all. I think there was one song on there that I could use.
Big for folks doing the Musical.......2006-03-20
If you're getting this CD to help prepare for your school or community group doing the musical, there are a lot of changes from the CD to the book. Aside from finding the book in a new key and some chunks added/deleted, Here We Go Again and When You're Big aren't included anymore.
Overall, the music's a little trite, but there are some nice moments -- mostly the stuff sung by the female leads.
It's Awesome, It's Amazing, It's BIG!!!!.......2006-01-22
My high school did "Big" my sophomore year, and oh my god, it was such a fun musical to do. I kind of forgot about it until my senior year, when I suddenly craved some of that music again. So I purchased this CD and I've been loving it since. They got rid of a couple of the songs and replaced them with others as the show progressed on Broadway, so I was suprised to hear new material (to me anyways), and for the most part, I actually enjoyed these original songs over their replacements that my production contained. This cast is phenomenal and the guy who plays Josh Baskin sounds so much like Tom Hanks at points, its crazy. It's a simple, yet a bit fantastic musical about growing up, and it's funny and romantic, and a lot of fun. I love all the songs, and it's a shame it didn't do too well on B-way. At least this recording will keep the music alive.
"This Isn't Me" is one of my favorite tracks, as it's a lot of fun and has a great beat, but suprisingly it was replaced with "Good Morning to Mom", which was only so-so. "I Want To Go Home" is a great ballad that Josh sings, and its simple, a bit funny, and the ending is the best, as its cute and sad. Another song they got rid of, "Here We Go Again", is a song Susan sings, and again, I like it alot. It has a quirky melody that I like. "Stars, Stars, Stars" is another great song, and is quite cute. One of the more popular songs. "Cross The Line" is the finale to Act I and is also very excellent and up beat, and makes you want to dance. "Stop, Time" is my favorite song on the album by far. Sung by Josh's mom, it is one of the more poignant moments of the show. Heartfelt, sad, and truly beautiful, it defiantely makes you appreciate your mom. Barbara Walsh sounds superb on this: she has a great voice. I love this one. "Dancing all the Time" is another good Susan song, and it leads into "I Want To Know" by Young Josh, which is another good ballad. "Coffee, Black" is another showstopper, fun ensemble song, and again, very comedic. "One Special Man" is Susan's ballad to Josh, and it is very beatiful. My only regret is that its only 2:21 so its a short one, and I just want her to start belting at the end, but no, its a quiet ending. Still, I love this one too. The finale is great too, and features an amazing duet between Josh and Susan. I love the harmonies they do.
All in all, this is a great album. Sample the songs and give it a try. This is a must have!!
a lost gem.......2004-10-14
i saw this musical at the local high school in 2001 and was plesently suprised i of course saw the movie and the only thing i knew about this musical was it didnt stay long on broadway, so when i saw it was i shocked this is a delight cross the line still resenates in my head 5 years later.
Ungodly awful.......2004-06-19
BEWARE. This musical is perhaps one of the five worst pieces of music I have ever experienced. I began to wonder if the composer was attempting to make the world's worst musical. Listen for yourself and enjoy the disjunct vocal lines, the desperate attempt at "fun music", and - worst of all - how the highlight of the entire show both dramatically and musically is the insipidly awful "Heart and Soul". Stick to the movie because this baby is horrendous.

Could have been a little better.......2007-05-20
I like Sizzla but this album only had about 4 or 5 good tracks. I find him at his best when he uses his "dancehall" voice. Its more gritty. When he sings its ok for some songs but not for majority. With that I still consider him one of the best artist out there.
Goodness Gracious!!.......2007-04-29
Dizzzzzzzzzzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmm! Kalonji musta fallen in love or something. He puts his foot in this one!! Dude is singing all passionately and what-not, got these wicked love songs, an homage to mama, still singing Jah's praises, it just don't stop. The reggae is flowing like mad. Coke ain't got nothin' on Sizzla 'cuz this surely is the real thing!!
Not my Speed.......2007-04-11
I'm not sure what I expected, but I found this CD to be a huge disappointment. Sizzla is an acquired taste, and I haven't acquired the taste buds yet.
Sizzla is sick.......2006-02-23
This album is SO FUN to listen to. Sizzla constantly entertains with something different and fresh. Why Should I, Simplicity, Got It Right Here and Bless Up are among the many great tunes. I've had it for a year and I still listen to it weekly.
One of the best.......2006-01-19
This is one of the Best Reggae CDs I've listen to in a while. Being a native of Jamaicaand all that, I know about these things.
This CD was very professional, and there were actually good songs with every verse being great.
MAKE NO MISTAKES FOLKS - I'm a dancehall reggae fan, but this music is so universally good that even the hardest dancehall reggae music fan can find something in there.
My favorites are:
3. Solid As A Rock (Great single)
4. Rejoice (Great song, Fantastic my 2nd fave)
7. Bless Up (sober)
11. Trod Mt. Zion (Personally I think this is the best song on the album)
12. Its Amazing (Sober!)
The rest are really good. Sizzla put together a solid CD. He even added a track for the weed smokers with "Got It Right Here"
hahaha
"Boom & Go Through" Give you a hiphop feel
"Simplicity" is solid

A Premiere Album For A Diva Of Such Magnitude.......2006-05-17
Angela Winbush by far is one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/producer of our time. Just when music was in a state of flux between gangsta rap and hip hop, Angela gave us an album of pop/ r&b sensibilities in "The Real Thing". Produced by her and executive produced by husband of the moment
Ronald Isley. Every song is top notch. Slinky, sexy and smooth. Everything from The Real Thing to I'll Never Be The Same is hot. Menage A Trois is a song about threesomes which she is not agreeing with. Why have three when you can have her?
I Learned To Respect The Power Of Love is a sensual track about the joys and pains of love. To me, I think Stephanie's version is a way lot better than hers due to the instrumentation. Angela's is wholesome while Stephanie's is more spiritually based. Overall, this is a dime album. Get it! Grade: A+++++
My FAVE LP From Angie!.......2003-05-28
{{I've Learned to Respect (The Power of Love)}}
That song have a very spiritual meaning, really moving too!
Angela Winbush wrote that song in 1976 for Alton McClain & Destiny and then it was topped in the charts in 1986 by Stephanie Mills. Finaly, Angie sang it in her 1989 release Its The Real Thing.
Personaly, I can't figure out which one is the betta version! Stephanie or Angela? I saw both ladies on the Apollo back in 2000 and they broke down while pre4ming that #. They tore the roof and people of all ages were crying after they finished the song.
I heard Angela's version last night and I noticed that while singing that tune at the end she hollered "Stephanie, let me tell ya about that power!" like both ladies have witnessed the same pain and only BOTH know what went down in their struggles.
Very Well produced LP and the lyrics are jawdropping! "Precious" is my FAVE jame from there.

A Lost Treasure Deserving of Discovery.......2001-12-02
I have yet to understand why the wife of superstar Ronald Isley has not received her due recognition. As a songwriter, she is in a class by herself and her distinctive voice is easily recognizable to all familiar with it. This late 80's gem is worth the purchase. The exemplary cuts are "Lay Your Troubles Down," performed with husband Isley, "Ménage a Trois," and the hit "I've Learned to Respect (the Power of Love)."
C'mon, folks, the title says it all. Y'can't get "realer" than this.

The 22-year-old South Texas native Rodney Hayden is the very first signee to Rosetta Records, Robert Earl Keen's new label. Thus it's not surprising that Hayden often sounds disarmingly like Keen in terms of intonation, if not style. But the Keen influence is only one component of Hayden's impressive and well-rounded package of talent. Stylistically, he's cast himself in a Texas-style hard-country/honky-tonk vein, with a touch of Nashville polish tossed in. He brings fire and youthful conviction to fine originals like the coming-of-age "Tryin' to Find Myself" and the anthemic "Heartaches & Highways" (two of seven songs Hayden cowrote with Bill Whitbeck for his debut album). Though he sounds a little callow on his rendition of Billy Joe Shaver's world-weary, politically incorrect "Black Rose," Hayden breathes convincing heartbreak into Robbie Fulks's "Tears Only Run One Way." And he even manages to turn Tom Waits's beer-stained, self-pitying "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" into a credible honky-tonk weeper. --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
Sounds more like a legend than a debut!.......2004-02-21
Every once in a while, country music is blessed with a great talent who has great passion for the music. Rodney Hayden is one of those rare blessings. The 22-year-old Pleasanton, Texas native has just released his first album and is already being compared to George Strait by many critics. There are a few similarities between Hayden and the legendary Strait. Hayden hails from a small South Texas town just down the road from Strait's home. Hayden also prefers to mix it up in his shows and on his album with some marketable country, some western swing and some tearjerkers that would fit in at the rowdiest honky-tonks. Hayden, like Strait in the late 1970s, has been turned down by the labels in Nashville for being "too country." Hayden's sound has even been compared to a young George Strait and he is honored at the comparison.
Hayden's debut album, The Real Thing, is just that, the real deal, the genuine article. He takes his cues from his western swing and honky-tonk heroes such as Lefty Frizzell, Bob Wills, Merle Haggard and yes, George Strait. His album has been produced by Texas music icon Robert Earl Keen and the album is on Keen's label, Rosetta Records. Hayden wrote or co-wrote nearly every song on the album, with the exception of a couple of outstanding covers. Perhaps the most touching song on the album is the country waltz "December Rose." The song is penned by Hayden himself and is based on a true love story that an elderly man shared with him at one of his first shows. "Trying to Find Myself" is an autobiographical song that Hayden wrote when he first became frustrated about being "too country" for a major record deal. Another self-penned tune entitled "You Don't Talk" has some western swing feeling pumped into it as the young singer croons about a relationship plagued by the ever present lack of communication in relationships. The well-written, fiddle laced, extremely mature song "Heartaches and Highways" is a standout on the album and is perfect for a late night drive on a lonely Texas road. Some of the superb cover songs include a rendition of Billy Joe Shaver's "Black Rose," a countrified, steel guitar vamped version of Tom Waits' "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You" and the swinging sad song "Tears Only Run One Way," written by Robbie Fulks. Although Hayden has been all but ignored by radio stations outside of Texas, his work has been praised by critics in Billboard, Country Weekly, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly and People Magazine. For Hayden, however, commercial success would only be icing on the cake. He is living his dream, making real country music filled with the cry of the fiddle and moan of the steel guitar. The music he is making is truly "the real thing."
This guy's the real thing.......2002-10-25
The first musician to sign on Robert Earl Keen's label. While Rodney plays country music in a more traditional manner than REK, this will appeal to any fan of the genre. This is outlaw country at it's finest. A strong disc from start to finish. Thank God there's still some real musician's playing good ol' fashioned country, what with the trash they pass off as roots music today. He even pulls off a Tom Waits tune that you would think was written by David Allan Coe. Well worth buying.
