Thinking mans punk.......2006-08-30

This album for me was the bridge I needed to get into S Cali punk. I hated the punk scene in LA with a passion . A friend gave me a couple of 7 Seconds early albums and I was not impressed at first. But Kevin Seconds and Troy Mowhat showed on Soulforce they could play!! 4 AM in Texas is one of the best road songs I have ever heard!! The drumming is melodic and guitars are incredible!! This album let me take a Second look at the earlier releases and enjoy all of them!! So should you!! And see this band live. !!!

Pleasant enough, but also mostly uneventful.......2006-07-12

_Soulforce Revolution_ did not take me by surprise at all when it came out. Their previous effort, _Ourselves_, was a staple of my boom box and remains to this day one of my favorite 7 Seconds albums. And while that album softened the attack somewhat, there were still plenty squalling guitars and high-engery riffs. This album, on the other hand, is probably the closest that the band ever got to straight-up pop and if you are looking for the classic speedy hardcore riffs I would definitely advise you to check out elsewhere in the catalog. Its closest to Kevin Seconds' later solo work in spirit and lyrical approach, with a much larger dose of 80s dissillusioned neohippie attitude that was barely contained beneath the surface on earlier 7 Seconds albums. Both this album and the rare _Praise_ EP alienated many a 7 Seconds fan who to this day cannot forgive.

The record's biggest flaw (which unfortunately followed Seconds all the way into his next project _Drop Acid_) is the bland, thin, unimaginative production, which mars some of the musical diversity that the band tried to incorporate. Opener "Satyragha," for example, starts out on a good note with jangly acoustic guitars (a first) and a upbeat tempo. "Busy Little People" is also an excellent track with some good riffing by Seconds (who takes over guitar duties on this plate). The production starts to wear on the listener, as songs start to blur into each other as the album progresses. It becomes clear the trademark high-energy sonics and attitude is in short supply compared to Seconds' obsession with mawkish acoustic balladeering ("Soul to Keep").

Some more of the production sheen, stronger riffing and more high-energy songwriting and band interplay that made _Ourselves_ such an excellent departure would have helped balance out the ballads. Despite its flaws, the band's overall goals were commendable. Also, it should be considered in the spirit of the times, when many old hardcore bands were dropping some of the aggression and punk posturing, signing with larger indies to secure better distribution, and tightening their musical skills (albums from this period include as Dag Nasty's phenomenal _Field Day_ and Government Issue's _You_). Overall it's not a bad album, and should be enjoyable enough for anyone who is interested in 80's indie rock.

catchy melodic pop/punk.......2004-11-27

This late 80's album captures 7Seconds at their apogee as a post hardcore/pop rock (call it whatever you want:) act.
Intelligent sentimental lyrics and rich melody with lots of influences, still keeping the edge of their previous albums - this is all you can expect from this album.
Personal favorite - "Tickets to a Better Place" :)

God forbid a band change their sound?.......2004-03-20

Ummmm this kid below me has no idea what hes talking about. 7 seconds always brought the old school 80's hardcore sound...but they can't play it forever. Soulforce revolution is the best 7 seconds record to date. Don't expect W.T.R.T. or the crew...rather peaceful, pop influenced punk. Good music for a day out surfing or just driving. I would recommend if you like these bands:
-Down by law, Samiam, Iconoclast, Shelter, Descendents...you know, that ol' chestnut...

One of the most dissapointing days in my life was the day I first put the needle to the vinyl of this recording. Wow! what crap. It's been almost 15 years now and the sense memory of just how badly this album sucked is still so painfully vivid. Eww..
From the band that brought you hardcore classics such as "Walk together, rock together" came a platter of horrible, tye dyed post hc soul seaching crap. I guess they got better again after this...After hearing this I was too fearful to find out.

Stay away from this disc.
The early 80's stuff is what you are looking for.
